SIMPLY THE BEST
By Donna Zibley
Minnesota based North Star Scrollers, a 1 year old
club, recently accomplished a feat that defies the common
wisdom, that: “The Only Time You Start at the Top – is When
You Dig a Hole”. The last weekend of July, a Woodworking
Hall of Famer, and a cofounder of modern Intarsia - Judy Gale
Roberts - came to the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington to
teach a half-day seminar for 50 folks and a hands-on Intarsia
Workshop for eight. If that isn’t starting “at the top” – then
what is?
Judy’s seminar was a PowerPoint program and lecture on the history of Intarsia, basic tips & techniques, and a
step-by-step lesson as to how one would go about specifically
making the Raccoon Intarsia project that was the project of
the weekend’s workshop. With the price of admission, each
seminar attendee received a Raccoon project package with a

pattern and detailed instructions to complete the project.
One thing we all noticed was that Judy is not simply a woodworker; she is first and foremost an artist. She
sees things that the rest of us would never think to look
for – like how to sand and shape any project in such a way
as to make the highlights and shadows play off the wood.
The pinnacle of the seminar was seeing Judy’s display of finished intarsia projects. Jaws literally dropped
as even the most experienced local Intarsia artists gazed
in wonder and awe at Judy’s masterpieces. We all knew
that we’d never again see work so incredibly perfect and
beautiful – certainly something to aspire to in our future
attempts at those very same projects.
The real magic of the weekend came in the workshop. Eight Scrollers – rookie to expert – were honored

My Intarsia Evolution
By Pete Ricci
Looking at “ole number one” the other day, I started to think about the road
I have traveled in Intarsia. Most of my deep thoughts occur while at the scroll saw
cutting out my next pattern. I remember looking at “ole number one” and thinking
it was the best thing I had ever done. Back in 2003 I cut the pattern with my Craftsmen pin blade scroll saw. I used a spindle sander and bench top sander to shape the
project. Once finished shaping I glued the pieces together and promptly sprayed the
whole project with high gloss clear finish. Can you believe it?
Back then I viewed each piece as a challenge, wondering if I could actually
make the cuts to produce the proper fit. I can remember cutting a few pieces, then
rushing to check the fit. It goes without saying that I cut the whole project with
maybe two or three blades. After finally cutting the project with the fit that I accepted then would be unacceptable today.
Today I look at each project in its entirety, knowing I can make the necessary
cuts. My Intarsia cutting skills improved with more practice, (I now use an Eclipse).
I began cutting all the parts for the whole project before checking for fit. I now use
three to four times the number of blades I have used in the past. I can tell by the pressure I apply to make the cut when it is time to change the blade. Oh, have I evolved!
Next I considered my shaping skills. This is where my evolution has been
most profound thanks to Judy’s guidance. Medical research has found that the left
brain is the technical side and the right brain is the artistic side. My right brain has
been dormant all these years, since my daytime job requires me to use my technical
skills.
I remember cutting out a project and dreading the shaping steps. First of all,
I looked at the project and had no idea where to start. With instruction I learned to
start with the parts that were furthest away from the viewer and work my way toward
the front. This all makes sense to someone with an active right brain but before my
evolution it was completely foreign to me.
As I tried more intarsia patterns without directions I struggled. I remember
reading and rereading the steps to shape other projects in Judy’s books, trying to apply them to my current project. I asked anyone who would listen for guidance. Taking Judy’s Intarsia classes helped, but I still was looking at shaping as a
technical skill since I had directions to follow.

Handy Tool for
Adding Highlights to Dowels
To make your own clamp begin with a 4” or 6” hand screw
wood clamp. Clamps can be purchased at Harbor Freight or
other woodworking supply houses. Harbor Freight has the
lowest prices.
Close the clamp jaws. Draw a line across the jaws perpendicular
to the jaw axis, beginning at the place where the jaw starts to
taper to its point.
Along this line, measure 3/16” away left and right from the
center line made by the closed jaws and make reference marks.
This size will allow you to clamp 3/8”to ¾” dowels.
Using a 45 degree triangle draw a square with corners at the
reference marks and the center line of the two jaws.
Richard Bowe gave us a handy tool to use to
drill a small hole in a dowel to add highlights.

North Star Scrollers Continued
to get a day and a half of Judy’s undivided help and attention. Judy’s wisdom, expertise and delightful personality made for a wonderful couple of days
together. All participants arrived at the
workshop with their project cut out.
Everyone used different woods, which
made each finished raccoon unique.
After the lessons from Judy,
we are all now eager to dive into Intarsia projects with a new perspective,
advanced skills and more confidence.
Hopefully some of us will be fortunate
enough to travel to Judy’s workshop in
Tennessee to continue learning at the
feet of this Intarsia master.
As for how the North Star
Scrollers will top this experience …
well, we may just have to bring Judy
back for an encore or bring in similar
“rock stars” for the other avenues of
scrolling that our members dabble in:
fretwork, segmentation, portrait cutting, puzzle making, compound cutting, etc.
Above all, we look forward to
continuing to promote the art of scroll
sawing and its many different ways of
bringing out the incredible beauty of
wood.

My Intarsia Evolution Continued
As I evolved and my right brain began to
function, I began to look at things differently. My need for detailed instruction
became less and less. I look at a rose now
and can see the relationship of the petals
to each other as they formed a beautiful
rose. Blending different pieces of wood to
form a horse head became much easier. I
recognized the angle of the head made one
eye appear further away which meant it
needed to be sanded thinner because it was
farther away. My eyes now could see these
little details, as they never had before.
As Judy would often tell me I began to see like an artist sees things. Now I
am not egotistical enough to think I can
see things like Judy does but I definitely
view things differently. Once I was able to
awaken my right brain, shaping is no longer a chore. It is not something I have to
do before I cut the next project. Shaping is
something I enjoy and something I think
about during the cutting of the project.
Oh, have I evolved!
To sum things up, I have begun to shape
things as I see them. This does not mean I
do not produce a golden retriever that my
wife, my toughest critic, says looks like a
lion. I still make mistakes. The difference
now is that many times I can recognize
them myself and make corrections. Oh,
have I evolved!

Dowel Clamp Continued
Use your scroll saw to cut out the
triangular areas made on the jaw face.
Open the clamp jaws as far as
they will go. The jaws are designed to
open parallel if you hold one handle
stationary and rotate the other handle
around the stationary handle axis. Using your scroll saw, cut out the triangular areas made on the jaw face.
To use the clamp, close it
down to hold your dowel vertically
between the two triangular areas. The
clamp makes a stable platform laying flat on your drill press or workbench. This keeps the dowel vertical
and your hands far from the drill bit
when drilling into the end grain of the
dowel. You can also use a “brad point”
drill bit. This will help keep the drill
bit from wandering off the side of the
dowel when you start drilling.

About the New Patterns
“Santa Sleigh” (I-285) I used paduak for Santa’s suit and
ribbon, aspen for the white, and western red cedar for the
remaining pieces. It was a fun project to make. Projects that
are not so realistic are more relaxing because they do not have
to look like a specific animal or person. Santa looks fine by
himself or add the reindeer for the full effect.
“Flying Reindeer” (I-286) Both deer are on one pattern. The deer were cut out of western red cedar, I used some
paduak for the accent parts of the deer to match Santa. Also,
I used some aspen for the white wood. The little jingle bells
were made out of dowels with a little wood-burning to make
them look more like the real thing. A walnut dowel for the eye
really sets it off. You could easily add more deer by repeating
the two patterns.
“Tennessee Walking Horse” (I-287) I’ve had many requests
for the TN Walker, especially since I live in TN. I found a really great piece of western red cedar for the body. Finding that
perfect piece of wood is what makes intarsia enjoyable for me.
I used aspen for the mane and tail. Of course you can make
the horse any color you like. I chose the palomino version.
My neighbor had a solid black TN Walker that was beautiful.
“Doberman Puppy” (I-288) The puppy looks great with
texture. I used the Wonder Wheel very lightly to make the
wood look more like a smooth coated dog. This is the red or
rust colored Doberman. I used all western red cedar on the
dog. You can easily change the colors to a dark walnut to make
the Doberman look more like the traditional color. I included
a “un-clipped ' version of the ears on the pattern.
“Crow Harvest” (I-289) This design has been hanging on
my office wall for a year or so. It was missing something. This
summer I added the crows and it came to life. I used walnut
for the crows, western red cedar for some of the pumpkins,
wheelbarrow, and the shadow. I used some Spanish cedar for
the pumpkin in the foreground and one in the center of the
wheelbarrow (thank you Steve for the cedar).
“Long ears” (I-290). As some of you know I had donkeys
for the last five or so years. We are using the donkey for the
intermediate two class this year. Donkeys come in many shades,
you can easily change the colors. I used western red cedar for
most of the donkey and a little aspen for the white areas. The
Wonder Wheel works great to add a rougher texture to the
donkeys coat.
“Abe” (CT-6) Abe is the project for this years advanced
class. I used walnut for the hair and beard, basswood for the
face, neck, and ears, aspen for the shirt, and western red cedar
for the coat and tie. Basswood works great for faces. The pattern comes with a 15 page set of instructions including lots of
photos to help shaping the project.
Have fun, Judy

Roberts Studio Open House
October 14th & 15th 2010
10:00 am to 3:00 pm
We realize by the time you read this the open house will have
come and gone. We will have stories and photos in the next issue to let
everyone know how it turned out.
Our plan is to have a yearly get together to let everyone have an opportunity to meet and visit with other Intarsia Enthusiasts. So far we have received
many calls asking how many intarsia pieces can each person bring for the brag
tables. We have invited some of the companies involved in the Intarsia/Scroll
sawing community. This years guests are listed below.
Ray Seymour, of Seyco Sales (EXCALIBUR Scroll Saws) will be on
hand. Ray will be glad to answer your questions about Excalibur saws and scroll
saw blades.
Shannon Flowers, of Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts magazine, will
be here to meet everyone. She is always looking for new projects for their magazine, perhaps you may have something they would like to publish.
Pete Ricci will be here sharing proper scroll sawing posture. How you sit
determines how you saw and can also lead to health issue. Did you know sitting
improperly could cause a headache or even nerve damage? Pete will be available to answer questions about the ECLISPEscroll saw.
Stephen Raffo, president of the SAND-FLEE® R.J.R. Studios. If you
aren’t familiar with the Sand-Flee it’s a great surface-finishing sander. He will
answer any questions you may have about the sander.
I’m sure we all have a few “Uh-Oohs” and “Ah-Ha’s” to share with our
scroller Marianne. If you are starting out or just can’t get the correct cut to make
your intarsia pieces fit, Marianne is the a great person to ask for technical support. I’ll be visiting with everyone. I’ll answer your questions about bringing your projects to life with contouring and texturing, along with any special
intarsia problem areas you might have. I am truly looking forward to an exciting
time with my Intarsia Family.
Refreshments will be served and we will have a Hot Dog and Chip Lunch at
Noon.
Parking - If you have visited the studio you know that the driveway is a little
steep. We have a limited number of parking spaces. When the parking area is
full we will have someone at the base of our hill to show you where to park and
give you a ride up the hill to the studio (believe me, you’ll be glad to ride rather
than walk).
If your GPS cannot locate our address in Seymour, TN try using Sevierville as
the city. There is map on page 22.

HARDWARE ITEMS
Set includes one bow sander
and one flexible flat sander.
Invented by an Intarsia enthusiast in Florida, just for Intarsia projects. You will find these sanders hard to replace, and use them every step of the way on your Intarsia projects, from start to
finish. The bow sander works great for those “hard to get to” areas, and the flexible flat sander is
great for contour sanding. These sanders do not require special sandpaper, and use your favorite
grit cloth backed sanding sheets, cut into strips. The bow sander will also hold abrasive cord.
The set comes with some pre-cut strips of sandpaper to help get you started.

Gel Finish We use three
coats of this gel on our projects which produces a very
nice finish, easy to get professional results. We coat
each piece before gluing down.
Intarsia Whiting Gel if using white pine or
any white wood that yellows. The white pigment will
help keep the wood a lighter shade. This whiting is the
same basic formula as the regular clear, with a white
pigment added. The pigment makes the gel look more
lumpy. For more natural results just use one coat of
white followed by two coats of clear.
Old Masters is only available to those living
in the contiguous U.S. One can of gel is $9.00 shpg.
charge, two - three cans of gel is $13.00 shpg., four
cans is $14.00 shpg., five cans is $15.00. Sorry for the
price increase, UPS and USPS have raised their rates.
Hot Melt Glue Gun
Abrasive Cleaning Stick
This Hot Glue Gun heats to 400 degrees and
has a whopping 200 watts of power. We also
have the glue for this gun in 10” sticks. We use
a combination of yellow woodworking glue
and the hot glue works like a clamp to hold
the part in place until the woodworking
glue has time to set up. The glue
gun is $36.95 ea. and the
glue sticks are $6.50 per
pound, sold only in one
pound bags.
I-GL $6.50 per pound. I-GUN $36.95 ea.
Abrasive
Cleaning
Stick
#ACS $3.50
This stick is great for giving
your sanders extra life. The
stick is 1” square X 6” long.
The abrasive cleaning stick is
$3.50 ea.
Kirjes Inflatable Sanders • Use with the Foredom Lathe above
The Kirges sanders are soft on the edges which makes getting into tight places without tearing up the rest of the piece much easier. I would
not recommend these sanders for your heavy sanding, the larger diameter drums work better for that. These little sanders have saved me time
when adding extra detail to my intarsia projects. The air is pumped in through the stem. Be sure to place the sanding sleeve over the edges of
the black rubber bulb. If you start seeing black streaks on your wood it’s best to stop and move the sanding sleeve. It is easy to sand a hole in
the rubber. I use a rougher grit on the K-120 (like a 80 grit) and a smoother grit on the K-140 (220 grit).

2020
the “INTARSIA EXPERIENCE” 2011 Class Information
The classes are held in our Studio/Woodshop located in Seymour, TN (note map on page 22). You will take home a project
that is completely shaped/sanded and a backing cut out for it. We do not put a finish on it (takes too long to dry). This year
we are asking students to help clean up their area at the end of each day. It doesn’t take long, we really do appreciate it.
BEGINNER Class: We will cover basic skills required to get you started on the right foot with Intarsia. You should have
some skill using a scroll saw. If not, we suggest you take a scroll saw course or at least practice on your scroll saw before attending the class. We will cover each step, using an easier pattern to help you have a good understanding of this technique.
This is beginning Intarsia, not beginning woodworking.
Scroll Sawing for Intarsia Class. For those of you brand new to scroll sawing for intarsia we now have a Tuesday afternoon
(the Tuesday before class day) scroll sawing class. The goal of this class is to learn basic intarsia scroll sawing skills that are
needed to make your pieces fit. The class will start at 1:00pm and finish up at 4:30pm. The dates of the beginner scroll sawing classes will be Tues May 2nd, and Tues Sept 20th. The fee for the Scroll Sawing Intarsia class is only $40.00.
INTERMEDIATE 1 Class: We will spend a little less time on the wood selection and layout. The project will be a little more
complex than the beginner project. The main focus will be on improving your scroll sawing skills to help ensure a good fit on
your projects, plus we will spend more time on shaping and adding texture to your project. You should have at least 8 to 14
Intarsia projects before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before attending the class, or take the beginner
class first.
INTERMEDIATE 2 Class: Will move quickly through the wood selection and layout. We will get more detailed about colors
and grain selection, you should have experience scroll sawing. The majority of the time on shaping and adding texture to your
project. You should have made 14 to 24 Intarsia projects before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before
attending the class, or take the beginner or intermediate 1 class first.
ADVANCED Class: You must attend an Intermediate 2 class before you can take the Advanced Class. We will send you the
patterns for the project, you will cut the project out before class using the wood of your choice. Having the project cut out
before class will enable you to have three days with Judy contouring the project. This class has been focusing on the human
face, the complexities involved in making a realistic face will make all other projects seem like a piece of cake. The class will
cover how to have a successful project using lots of raising shims for added dimension. It will be interesting to see the choices
of wood each student uses. The project will be something that Judy has designed just for the class.
TUITION
$475.00 Three Day Class: All classes will be held from Wednesday through Friday. This will be a “hands on” class. All
classes will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 5 PM with a 1 hour lunch break, we will provide picnic lunches. We will also provide refreshments and snacks during the day.
PAYMENTS
To register for a class we require a deposit of $200.00. FULL PAYMENT FOR THE TUITION MUST BE RECEIVED
THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CLASS. Due to long waiting lists, we ask that you notify us as
soon as possible if you have a change of plans so that we can fill your class space. There will be a $50 fee to transfer from one
class to another. Class payments will not be transferred to future classes outside the current year’s class schedule.
REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY
To be eligible for any returned money, you must notify us as soon as possible. There will be an automatic $50 cancellation
fee for any canceled registration, regardless of the date of withdrawal.
If you withdraw from a class more than 60 days in advance, the school will refund the deposit on the class, less the $50
cancellation fee (refund of $150.00). If you withdraw 30 to 59 days before the class, the school will refund only 50% of the
deposit on the class, less the $50 cancellation fee (refund of $50.00). If you withdraw within 29 days of the class, there will
be NO REFUND ON ALL PAID MONEY FOR ANY REASON. If you cancel a class and are eligible for a refund, the available refundable money can be applied to another class in the same year (less the $50 cancellation fee). You cannot transfer
money to another class in the next year’s schedule. If for any reason Roberts Studio must cancel a class, all money will be
refunded.
