We celebrate the life of Judge John (Jack)
Vail who passed away a few weeks ago.
John was a member of Maui Country Club
for almost fifty years! During that time he
served on the Board of Directors for many
years and was the Club President a
number of times in the 1980s as well as in
the 1990s. John was passionate about his
love for the Club and spent most of his
days here!
Initially, the Maui Country Club limited
the persons who were eligible to join. In
the 1950s, H.C.&S. closed the camps
above Ho'okipa Beach Park and the
golfers who had been playing there were
welcomed to play our course but were
restricted to the present day Golf Pro
Shop. Their club was called The East
Maui Golf Club. John Vail was not happy
with this situation and during one of his
tenures as President in the 1980s he
orchestrated integrating their group into
the Maui Country Club. This was not an
easy or popular task and he deserved a lot
of credit for making it happen! He had a
regular golf group and many times he
reminded me of the diversity in his group
and how proud he was of it!
Whenever you sit in the beautiful koa
furniture with the hand carvings you have
John Vail to thank. He and Twiggy
Vorfeld located these pieces and bought

them for the Club. They were made at the
Olinda Honor Camp. The joke has been
that if Judge had an offender in his
courtroom with woodworking skills he
made sure to send them to Olinda! The
furniture seems to have been sized for
someone who was quite a bit bigger and
taller than the average person; that would
have been John Vail!
John Vail really appreciated good music.
During the late 90s we had a new
member named Willy Nelson. John asked
him if he would play a few songs and one
evening Willy brought his guitar and
about a dozen of us gathered on the lanai
and he played his classics. Last week I
saw Willy and told him of John’s passing
and Willy commented that, "He was a
buddy of mine."
John Vail was an amazing individual and
the heart and soul of the club. We were
honored by his presence and he will be
missed!

Burgers n’ Blues Night
Tennis fans & friends gathered Friday, March 4th at the courts for social doubles, cold
beer, salty blues and burgers! 20-Minute Mixed Doubles matches began at 4:30,
Ascending/Descending (winners moving up, "unfortunates" moving down & switching
partners) as the smooth tunes and players hit the courts. Cason's fabulous burgers along
with all the fixin's from the MCC kitchen made for a
perfect night as the sun set and the moon came out.
Mahalo to Cason, DJ TommyG, Brooke & Megan - a great
team and another great night!

Hoedown Kodak Moments...
A Tale of Two Chilis
Amanda Singer figured she had a shot at winning
when a judge asked for seconds of her chili during the
annual Chili Cook-off at the Club’s Great Western
Hoedown last month. She figured right and earned the
Judges Choice award for her “Honey, it’s Lip Lick’n
Good” chili.
2016 Tennis Calcutta
Mixed Tournament
When asked what secret she attributed to her win at the
chili cook-off, Amanda shared, “I’m a pretty shy person,
so deciding to enter the competition was me getting out
of my comfort zone. Seeing the kids having so much
fun at the pony rides, pool, sampling chili, and dancing
reminded me of the great time I had at the country club
my parents belonged to when I was growing up in
Southern California. The club is a special place for kids;
where they can be safe and independent. Funny, it
wasn’t until I participated in the chili contest that I drew
that connection to my own childhood. I love Maui
Country Club, now I realize why!”
Chili contest judges Dale Pontis, Gretchen Voxland, Club GM Russell Goshi & Executive Chef Sean
Christensen evaluated each chili for appearance, consistency, aroma & taste. They did not know whose
chili they were scoring in this unbiased, blind tasting.
After the judges completed their tasting and voting, it was time for the nine entrants to stand at the ready
next to their slow cookers while about 150 guests and members tasted and voted for their favorite chili.
Duffy Casey won the People’s Choice award and his cowboy decorated Crockpot was a big crowd
pleaser.
Chili offerings ranged from green, tomatillo chicken to vegetarian. Some had beans. Others did not. Most
used beef, but chicken and pork made appearances. Condiments such as cheese, cilantro, sour cream
and limes were available for several of the chilies. Amanda offered tasters fresh squeezed tangerine
juice as a palette cleanser prior to tasting her chili.

Hoedown Kudos
The Country Western Hoedown last Saturday was so much fun! Keiki and their parents hit
the trail with Maui Ponies on this beautiful afternoon then joined the chili competition in the
Clubhouse tasting and voting for their favorite chili. Congratulations to Duffy Casey, the
People’s Choice winner in the Chili Cookoff and to Amanda Singer, who took home the
coveted Judges’ Choice award. Sweet Bluegrass tunes filled the air with The Black
Cadillacs as Chef Sean rolled out his special BBQ Buffet. Member Danny Henderson, aka
“Country Man Dan” on guitar and Finance Committee Chair Randy Coon on banjo joined
the band which featured special performances by J.J. Jones and Lindsey Fyfe – what a
treat! Mahalo to member & owner of Horses ‘R Us Jennifer Brittin for decorations and our
pop-up “Country Store” with everything western at half off! Many got on the floor to dance
the Tush Push and Cowboy Cha-cha with member “Gigi” Voxland with an
assist from Tennis Committee Chair Tom Glesne – DJ TommyG – all agreed
dancing is the perfect after-dinner workout. Hats off to TommyG for a fabulous
job on sound, lights and spinning country favorites through the night. Thank y’
kindly to all the members who participated in the Chili Cookoff, shared talent,
resources and expertise to make this event such a success…and to
Entertainment Chair Jeannette Iwado and helpers John Cho, Dave Wehr,
Laurie Loney, John Hoxie, and Shep Murray from 250+ delighted members
& guests!

Aloha Golfers!
Amy Wines scored her first career hole in one on February 12th. Her memorable shot happened on the 158 yd. 12th hole,
using a 5 hybrid club. I was giving a golf lesson on the practice area and heard a "commotion" on the #12 green. I looked over
and Amy was waving to get my attention. As I was driving to the green, I thought Amy had a rules question but soon realized
that she had just hit the golf shot she will always remember. The afternoon glare from the sun makes it difficult to see the ball as
it heads towards the green. Playing partners Sandy Muller and Kathy Kaaa helped Amy look for her ball and it was nowhere to
be found. Puzzled, Amy thought, maybe I'll just peek into the hole. And there it was! Numerous phone calls were placed after
that.
Congratulations Amy!
♦
Dale Pontis scored his 4th career hole in one on Friday, February 26! His memorable shot came
on the par 3, 167 yard #12 hole with his 6 iron. Celebrating with him were playing partners Joe
Bradley, Gerry Ross & Paul MacLaughlin.
Congratulations Dale!

♦♦♦ Don Ito won the February "ACE" with a score of net 70. A scorecard "playoff" was needed to
determine the winner, as Raymond Tendo and Les Hondo also shot 70's. Don automatically qualifies
and joins January's ACE, Roy Takahashi in the year end "Ace of Aces". The ACE Tournament is held
on the first weekend of every month. Good job Don!
♦♦♦♦ Our next "Divot Day" is scheduled for Monday, March 14th, beginning at 3 pm. Members are
encouraged to hop in a golf cart, grab buckets of sand and cruise the golf course "filling divots" in the
fairways and tee box areas. Free refreshments for all "Divoteers"!
Congratulations
Don Ito

sizes, a new 40 oz. has been added. These bottles keep beverages cold up to 24 hours and hot up to 12 hours.
♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ Continuing through March, the Srixon Soft Feel will be the "Golf Ball of the Month" - special price is $18 dz.

AMAZON'S 2015 BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER MORNING EDITION BOOK CLUB PICK NAMED A BEST
BOOK OF THE YEAR BY: THE WASHINGTON POST, NPR, TIME,
THE SEATTLE TIMES, MINNEAPOLIS
STAR-TRIBUNE,
SLATE, LIBRARY JOURNAL, KIRKUS, AND MANY MORE
Fates and Furies is a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling
examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by
one of the best writers of her generation.
Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And
sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its
secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years.
At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and
destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their
friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more
complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations
and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff
delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is
unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and
emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.
