HITS THE
GROUND
STUNNING
There’s a lot to like from
Thor Motor Coach (TMC)
for 2016, starting with its
Tuscany series of Class
A diesel motor homes.
According to TMC, the line
has been redesigned with a
new basement structure and
hydraulic slide-out rooms,
which afford users with
increased exterior storage, while good looks matches
functionality with a handful of new full-body paint
packages. On the inside, users will appreciate the new
solid surface entry steps, Xite Dash Radio with Rand
McNally navigation, polished porcelain tiling, and
decorative ceiling treatments.
The Tuscany XTE series garners attention as well for
2016 with the addition of new porcelain tile flooring,
kitchen backsplashes and full-body paint packages. The
XTE’s 40BX floorplan was also enhanced with a new
bunk bed configuration, while the more compact 34ST
and 36MQ now offers a choice of Tuscany style and
appointments in a smaller package.
Also be sure to check out the Palazzo series of
Class A’s with new front caps, full-body paint exterior
graphics, kitchen backsplashes, window treatments,
and LED accent lighting. An RV-friendly Axxera radio
with a 10-inch screen is found in the cockpit and just
overhead is a power drop-down overhead bunk, which
can be lowered at the touch of a button.

FIRST GLANCE:
2016 FORD EXPLORER
RVers have embracing the Ford Explorer’s spaciousness, handling, and
towing prowess since its introduction in 1990. Now, after more than 15
years, the Explorer continues to impress with refined functionality and
comfort for 2016.
The editors of RVL took the 2016 model through its paces in Ottawa,
ON, last month and what always seems like an endless drive from the
Greater Toronto Area to the nation’s capitol, the Explorer enhanced the
experience and turned an otherwise boring drive into a pleasant journey.
Acceleration, handling and control on our 2016 Explorer was derived
from its standard 3.5 L V6 Ti-VCT V6 engine – just engage the gas and
the Explorer responds with ease and efficiency. The 2016 also touts the
optional four-cylinder 2.3 L EcoBoost engine, rated at 280 horsepower
at 5,500 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm (on premium fuel).
According to Ford, in addition to many added benefits, the 2.3 L retains its
EPA-estimated best-in-class fuel economy of 28 mpg (highway) and also
allows customers to opt for four-wheel drive and trailer towing capabilities
with a four-cylinder engine.
Inside, our Explorer was outfitted with ample, plush leather seating
thanks to the dual rows in the rear, while the driver and forward passenger
are treated to leather buckets. In all, the Explorer conveniently seat seven.
Opt for the available Class III Trailer Tow Package, which is required
for towing with the Explorer, and users will benefit from the Class III
frame-mounted hitch, 4- and 7-pin trailer connectors, and engine oil
cooler. It also offers a towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds (when properly
equipped). Five Explorer models are available including the base Explorer,
XLT, Limited, Sport and Platinum.

DETERMINING
AERODYNAMICS,
HILLS & POWER
Andy examines factors affecting
fuel efficiency and reliabilty
During our trip, our group had three trailers including a 34’ Airstream with a Ford
Flex EcoBoost, C350 Mercedes towing
a 23’ Airstream and the Cherokee with a
23’ Vista Cruiser.
W
doesn’t necessarily mean it serves as an
ideal tow vehicle.
The new Cherokee couldn’t be more
different than it was when it was first
introduced. It utilizes state-of-the-art
technology, and the body structure is
tight, solid and quiet. Its four-wheel
independent suspension is tuned just
about perfectly – it’s not soft, uncontrolled or harsh. Our Limited model has
225/55 x 18-inch tires. Some Cherokee
models have 17-inch rims, but the
18-inch tire and wheel combination is
certainly the best for towing.
hen the Vista Cruiser trailer from Gulfstream was
launched six years ago we
were excited about its introduction.
At the time, many prospective RVers
were looking for an aerodynamic trailer
to tow with vehicles that did not have
enough power to pull more conventional lite trailers. The vehicle could start
the weight and handle nicely they just
needed a trailer that was a little more
efficient aerodynamically. The 3.0 L
Ford Escape is a good example.
With the Vista Cruiser’s radius
roof design, lower profile and sevenfoot, six-inch width, the trailer offered
reduced aerodynamic drag, making it
possible to tow a full-size trailer safely
and efficiently for a lot of customers.
There are also quite a few people that
have larger tow vehicles who simply
want a trailer that’s easily towable. The
Vista Cruiser’s narrower width makes it
easy to see around, yet it is still spacious
10
RV Lifestyle | Volume 44 Number 4
inside. Over the last few years, other
so-called “lite” trailers that have been
introduced are taller and therefore, less
aerodynamic. For a full-size trailer with
flat walls, the Vista Cruiser is about as
good as it gets for towing ease.
Earlier this year RVL Technical
Editor Garth Cane tested the new Jeep
Cherokee and was quite impressed. So,
we acquired one for a test drive vehicle
at Can Am RV Centre.
The first generation Jeep Cherokee
was a vehicle people often inquired
about when it came towing to a trailer. I think it was the combination of
a smaller size vehicle and its tough
profile that made people think it would
tow well.
However, it wasn’t an optimal highway vehicle due to its front and rear
live axles, vague steering and short
wheelbase. While the body-on-frame
structure was rattle-prone, its strength
was its off-road capability, which
continued on page 12

HITCH HINTS by Andy Thomson
The wheelbase is still short at 106 inches but the overhang is only 32 inches so
the overhang percentage is a respectable
34 percent. Combined with its precise
rack and pinion steering the handling is
quite stable. I find it to be more stable
than the Grand Cherokee, though it’s not
likely as good for off-roading. However,
I will be the first to say that I am not an
expert in that area.
All Cherokees have a nine-speed
ZF transmission with the choice of a
2.4 L multi-air four-cylinder engine or
the very nice 3.2 L V6 engine. The V6
engine comes standard with a 3.25:1
axle ratio, but with the towing package
there’s a much better 3.51:1 ratio. Even
if I never towed a trailer, I would suggest the 3.51:1 ratio as I cannot imagine
ninth gear with its very steep .48:1 ratio
being very useful with the standard ratio.
The 3.51 ratio is not available on
the front-drive chassis, so be sure to
opt for the all-wheel drive version (it’s
hard to imagine a Jeep without all-wheel
drive anyway). The towing package also
includes a transmission cooler and a
good hitch receiver that, so far, appears
continued from page 10
The new Jeep Cherokee utilizes stateof-the-art technology, and its structure is
tight, solid and quiet.
stronger than many higher rated hitches.
At a mere $495 this package offers very
good value.
I was expecting optimal fuel economy from this drivetrain since the 3.6 L
(that this engine is derived from) does
so well in the Chrysler 300M and Dodge
Caravan. However, on a recent trip to
Nova Scotia, I was starting to wonder
about this.
During our trip, our group had three
trailers to include a 34’ Airstream with
a Ford Flex EcoBoost, C350 Mercedes
with (a 3.5 L engine) towing a 23’
Airstream and the Cherokee with a 23’
Vista Cruiser.
My friends tend to drive a little
quicker than I suggest, at around 110
km/h, so it wasn’t the most economical
run. Still, these trips provide good comparisons of fuel economy as you drive
down the same road, in the same conditions, at the same speed.
continued on page 14
The Airstream and Mercedes towed
in sixth gear most of the time at 2100
RPM, and climbed moderate hills in fifth
gear at 2700 RPM.

HITCH HINTS by Andy Thomson
On our way to the east coast, the
Flex and the Jeep both averaged 50
litres to fill at each gas stop and the
Mercedes was averaging 43 litres. The
Jeep was always the first to need fuel.
From London to Halifax, the Mercedes
averaged 16.4 L/100 and the Jeep averaged 20.1. I was curious how much of
this difference was due to the Airstream
and how much was it due to the
Mercedes.
On the way back from Hopewell
Rocks, NB to Quebec City, we
switched trailers and put the Airstream
on the Jeep and the fuel economy
reversed. The Mercedes was using
50 litres and the Jeep only 45 litres.
I expected the Mercedes to do a little better than the Jeep as it is a twowheel-drive and has considerably less
air drag. Nonetheless, I was surprised at
how big the difference was between the
two trailers.
14
RV Lifestyle | Volume 44 Number 4
continued from page 8
I also expected the fuel economy to
be about even. With today’s transmissions and the many gears, the aerodynamic differences are very apparent when towing. The Airstream and
Mercedes towed in sixth gear most of
the time at 2100 RPM, and climbed
moderate hills in fifth gear at 2700
RPM. While towing the Vista Cruiser,
the Mercedes needed fifth gear at 2700
on the level and dropped to fourth gear
at 3400 RPM on similar hills. The
Jeep towed the Vista Cruiser in fifth
gear at 2850 RPM while it towed the
Airstream in sixth gear at 2300 RPM.
Below is a quick review of the fuel
economy differences (refer to chart).

home we slowed our towing speed
to 100 km/h and we realized that the
extra 10 km/h certainly costs a lot of
fuel. At the more sensible 100 KM/h,
the Jeep and Vista Cruiser delivered
quite a respectable fuel economy.
Over the years, I have traveled from
the Canso Causeway to Sydney in Nova
Scotia with a several different tow vehicles. As I remembered, this road had
many large hills, some with passing
lanes. The first time that I drove this road,
I was driving a 1975 Pontiac (that had a
455 engine) and towing a 31’ Airstream.
On many of the hills, it climbed in second gear at 75 km/h. Another time I did
the trip with a 1989 Caprice with a 305
engine and again, climbed several grades
at about 75 km/h in second gear.
In 1998, I was there again, this time
with our first Windstar (that had a 3.8
L V6 engine) towing a 34’ Airstream.
Our friends were driving a 5.7 L 1995
Suburban (pre vortex) and both rigs
climbed about the same at 75 km/h
in second gear. I was anxious to see
how our new combinations would do
on these grades. Well, either the roads
have been re-graded (very unlikely) or
these newer vehicles have a great deal
more power as we hardly noticed the
hills and never lost speed.
I should mention a tire change on
the Mercedes. I always find it amazing
what one tire size can do for handling.
Generally, we go to a slightly smaller,
tighter handling tire for towing. In my
wife’s C350 we went the other way. It
had very aggressive 225/40 x 18” front
tires and 255/35 rear tires. They provided aggressive handling and were
firm riding. This car was completely
infallible when we used it on the race
track last fall. I figured for my wife’s
daily use, the tires could be a little less
aggressive and smoother.
This past summer, it was time for
new tires so we increased them one size
to 235/40’s on the front and 265/35’s
on the rear. At the same time we went
to a tire with a slightly softer sidewall.
These are still pretty aggressive tires
but it’s amazing how much difference
this slight change made to the steering
precision. If it was my car, I would
likely change back to the aggressive
tire next time but for my wife’s purposes, the softer ones are fine and it
still handles very well.
So what did we learn here? While an
Airstream is very aerodynamic, decreasing the speed makes a lot of sense. The
Jeep Cherokee is a really nice SUV,
especially for the price and the fact that
the 3.2 L engine tows the Vista Cruiser
extremely efficiently. Tire size does
matter more than you think it does, and
hills just aren’t what they used to be.
Andy less is the new more.

RV TIPS

IT’S ALL IN
THE OIL
T
here are many functions of
engine oil. It lubricates, cools,
cleans, seals, and protects
against rust and corrosion in automotive engines.
A thin film of oil holds spinning
parts away from stationary parts to
prevent friction from metal-to-metal
contact, which can wear away surfaces. Oil helps cool the engine by
absorbing heat from moving parts
and transferring it to the oil cooler in
the radiator where it’s diffused into
the surrounding air. Oil splashes on
the bottom skirt of the pistons to help
transfer the heat so the pistons do not
expand inside the cylinders.
When driving, small particles of
grit enter the engine through the air
cleaner where they can grind against
any moving parts. It also washes away
these bits of metal, dirt, and other particles and deposits them in the oil filter to prevent damage.
With a properly lubricated engine,
friction is reduced, fuel economy
is increased and the engine life is
extended as it ideally cushions moving parts. It also helps seal the piston
rings and cylinder walls to maintain
compression and prevents air from

coming in contact with the steel parts
of the engine that would cause oxidation or rust.
When buying engine oil, the markings on the tin are often confusing.
Some markings (on the top of the tin)
refer to American Petroleum Institute
(API) service ratings, which range
from SA for the lowest quality of oil
to the latest SJ synthetic oil for modern engines with turbochargers.
The owner’s manual will suggest the best oil rating to maintain
the warranty of your engine. A better
rating of oil can be used, but never
use a lower-rated oil for an engine.
The viscosity or oil weight is the measure of the fluidity of the oil, or its
ability to flow. Higher numbers indicate a heavier oil and lower numbers
like SAE 5 or 10 refer to oils that
flow easily in colder weather. SAE
is the abbreviation for Society of
Automotive Engineers.
In cold weather, oil thickens and
resists flowing. This could make your
engine hard to start and result in poor
lubrication until the engine warms
up. In hot weather, oil becomes thin
and cannot provide the lubrication
it requires as it breaks down caus-

ing damage to moving parts. This is
why multi-viscosity oils are commonly used. It acts as a very thin, easily
flowing oil when the engine is cold,
then acts like a heavier duty oil to provide protection as the engine gets up
to operating temperature.
Always use the viscosity of oil recommended by the engine manufacturer. However, some older high-mileage
engines benefit from a heavier weight
oil to help seal and lubricate parts that

have worn. This may also prevent oil
from passing worn piston rings during deceleration when a high vacuum
can draw the oil into the combustion
chamber where it burns (and results in
blue smoke coming out the exhaust).
Synthetic oils are wax-free and
flow better in colder temperatures.
They also contain additives that
combat breakdown (or chemical
changes) that form sludge, which
blocks the galleries (the small passages in the block and head) that
the oil travels through to lubricate
individual parts, thus preventing corrosion, gumming by oxidation, and
foaming from air bubbles.
Air will not hold moving parts
away from each other. Synthetic oils
often allow the engine and differential to run cooler, and permit more
mileage between oil changes. Many
new trucks come from the factory
with synthetics in the oil pan and the
rear differential. Calcium and magnesium detergents in the oil help keep
the engine clean, and dispersants keep
sludge and dirt in suspension until it
can be removed by the oil filter.
Engine oils consist of about 30
percent oil and the balance is made
up from various additives. Most automotive engineers believe there are
enough additives in the best quality
engine oil so there’s no need to buy
extra additives from an automotive
distributor. Phosphorous and Zinc
additives in synthetic oil are important to engines with turbochargers as
they maintain anti-wear lubrication
after the engine shuts down. The high
heat from the exhaust gases in a turbo
can cook normal oils in its bearings
as it spools down after the normal oil
flow stops.
The oil pump supplies the crankshaft bearings, camshaft bearings,
lifters, and rocker arm assemblies
continued from page 16
through a series of oil galleries. Oil is
sprayed on the valves and splashed on
the bottom of the pistons for cooling
and lubrication of the connecting rod
and wrist pin. The rings on the pistons
clean the oil off the walls of the cylinder as the piston goes down so the oil
is not left to burn in the combustion
chamber. If the valve guides become
worn, then oil can migrate up the shaft
of the valve where it can burn in the
combustion chamber.
If an engine is low on oil, or there
is no oil at all, then the parts are not
being lubricated. One GM engineer
told me that if a 7.4 L big block gas
engine is not using a quart of oil in
1,000 miles, then it may not be getting
the lubrication it needs.
Oil filter elements are normally
made from either paper or cotton to
allow the oil to flow but block and trap
small debris such as metal particles,
“…A General Motors engineer once told me that if a 7.4 L big

carbon, rust and dirt. Bypass oil filters are commonly used to protect the
engine from oil starvation if the filter
element becomes clogged. When the
oil pressure is too high, which can be
caused by cold or thick oil, the bypass
valve will open allowing unfiltered oil
to flow to the engine bearings, preventing major damage.
Oil coolers may be used to reduce
the temperature of the oil in heavy
duty engines and vehicles with a trailer-towing package. The oil is pumped
through a device similar to a radiator
so excess heat can be driven off by
a strong flow of air as you drive. If
your vehicle is not moving down the
road, the only air flow comes from the
radiator fan, which may not be enough
to cool the oil.
The positive crankcase ventilation
system (PCV) draws toxic fumes out
of the engine crankcase and burns

them in the combustion chamber. This helps prevent
sludge formation that could restrict the oil circulation in
the galleries and pollute the atmosphere with vapours.
It’s best to check the oil at least once a month when
the vehicle is on a flat surface, when its cool and has been
shut down for a while. This allows the oil to drain back
down into the sump where the level is measured. Look
at the oil on the dipstick to be sure that it is clear and
doesn’t have a burnt smell. The oil will be darker than
new oil as it removes dirt. If you drive with the oil down
one quart then you are depriving the engine of 25 percent
of its lubrication capability, making the rest of the oil do
more work and absorbing more heat. Never fill the oil
over the full mark on the dipstick as this can cause foaming from a mixture of oil and air.
The top of the engine is the last section to receive
oil from the pump. Many race cars have the top of the
engine disassembled before a race so that the upper
cylinder parts may be lubricated before the engine is
started. Some companies offer a pre-lubricator for heavyduty motorhome engines that send oil up to the top of
the engine before the engine is started. This is run by a
12-volt pump.
Some automotive manufacturers recommend staying
with the same brands of oil since different additives may
be used by different companies. Even though it’s “only
an oil change,” it’s a critical component of responsible
vehicle maintenance. Having your teeth cleaned every
six months isn’t the same as having bridgework, but by
doing the former you can avoid the latter. rvlifemag.com

Visiting the Earthquake Capitol of the World.
A
fter arriving in Hollister,
California, we discovered that
in addition to being a desirable
destination for food and wine lovers,
the town claims to be the “Earthquake
Capital of the World.” The Calaveras
Fault, a branch of the San Andreas
Fault, bisects the city.
In an area with older houses, we
located street curbs and sections of
sidewalks that had shifted out of line.
The cement walkway to one house
was off center from the front porch.
Sunbathers lounged on the grass in a
downtown park, on a slope that wasn’t
always there.
Hollister is a town on the move. We
learned that we were looking at the
results of seismic creep. When a fault
slips continuously, with either constant
or periodic movement, as it does in the
Hollister area, there is less likelihood
of a severe earthquake.
People told us that it was not unusu-

ZION
A Class B that’s ready to roll!
Text and photos by Steve Fennell
I
ntroduced to the industry at the National RV Trade Show
in Louisville, KY., last December and now available across
Canada, the new ZION from Roadtrek is the latest innovation in the Class B market. This peppy, compact motorhome
is everything you would expect from a company that has been a
leader in this segment for more than four decades.
At first glance – inside or out – the streamlined ZION is appealing with contemporary styling, ample storage, plenty of headroom,
and camping-friendly amenities. Put these features and more to the
test and the ZION offers a real deal for RV enthusiasts. We had the
opportunity to test drive the ZION for a few days in the Niagara
region of Ontario and regardless of the conditions – extreme rain
or blasting sunshine – the ZION delivered ample comfort, on and
off the road.
CHASSIS

country roads is a dream and cruising
provincial highways is stress-free.
While care is always required when
driving a vehicle of this size, it simply
takes a few minutes to become familiar
with the handling characteristics. Simply
adjust the large side view powered mirrors to your liking and there’s no problem changing lanes or negotiating congested traffic.
The back up monitor, displayed
on the large navigation screen in the
cab when in reverse, makes parking or
maneuvering in campgrounds a breeze.
When needed, ample acceleration is
very responsive thanks to the 3.6L V6
280 hp engine with FWD six-speed 62
TE auto transmission.
Adding to the smoothness of the ride
are the 16-inch LT225/75R16 black wall
tires and handling and stopping power
is excellent thanks to the ABS four-disc
anti-lock brakes. Engage the cruise-control, sit back in the deep, heavy-duty,
commercial-grade swivel front seats,
stretch out your legs and enjoy the ride.

be applied first. Warranty excludes the
complete chassis and AGM batteries
which have a normal one-year manufacturer’s warranty.
ON THE OUTSIDE
From the chassis up, a range of exterior
appointments add functionality to the
unit’s good looks. In addition to large
windshield, allowing excellent driving
visibility, we especially liked the tinted,
windows stretching along the middle
on either side of the ZION (ending with
smaller side windows with screens and
night shades). Add the over-sized driver
and passenger windows, and everyone
can share vista views no matter where
they are seated.
Powered entry steps for the driver,
passenger and side door are a thoughtful
touch offering easy access into the vehicle and just remember they automatically
extend once the doors open. So you have
to be careful until you get accustomed
to this option. To keep bugs out, there’s
a retractable accordion-style screen door
available to use when the side door is
open and illumination at night is provided by a pair of LED porch lights, located
at the front and back of the unit.
Access to the ZION is very convenient with the two rear double-hinged

along side of the unit so they are out of
the way. This area can also be screenedoff and one of the doors has dedicated
storage for the removable dining table.
Overhead is a high-mount rear-view camera, and just below is the Class IV hitch
and connections for the 110V, city water,
and propane (that also has a quick disconnect valve for an auxiliary grill). Simply
hook up the electrical system at the campground, flip the inverter on the ZION’s
monitor panel and the appliances, lighting
and A/C all come to life. Another exterior
highlight was the 12-foot power awning
that extended over our campsite, which
secured easily with the extendable (and
lockable) awning posts.
ON THE INSIDE
Our admiration for the interior came
well before we left for Niagara. With
an overall width of six feet, eleven
inches and six feet two inches of
headroom, there was ample space and
storage was everywhere.
Roadtrek is famous for clever use
of storage. No space was too small and
there was room for all of the essentials.

galley, a large, wide drawer just opposite, and in the pull-out pantry and large

bags, even tools, pet supplies, bike helmets, and additional camping gear, can
be put away neatly in the four drawers
underneath the passenger side lounge,
three drawers below driver side lounge,
or the series of cupboards overhead, on
both sides of the unit. Roadtrek claims
there’s an impressive 42 square feet of
storage space in this Class B – and we
ideally used this for a family of four.
On the road or at the campsite, the
facing lounges provide a relaxing eating,
living and reading area with the portable
pedestal table (a second pedestal is found
by the cab area). Push-in LED lights are
found throughout the length of the unit
and one is dedicated for each seating area.
The facing lounge electronically
extends to create a queen bed measuring 74 x 76 inches. For convenience,
we suggest stowing linens or pillows in
the upper cupboards for easier access
when needed during the night. On our
ZION, there was an optional 24-inch flat
screen TV with Blu-Ray player featuring an articulating swivel mount, which
allows convenient, multiple viewing
angles from all seating areas in the unit.
The cable/satellite hook-ups plus a 12V
charging port are concealed neatly in the
cupboard just above the flat screen.
The permanently enclosed toilet,
accessed via the double locking mirrored
doors on the driver’s side just opposite
the galley, features a mirror, toilet, small
sink, and hand held shower. As an added
convenience, the mirrors on the doors
can be interchanged with plain, white
panels located on the back if more mirrors are required in the bathroom. For
quick wash downs of dirt or mud, an
exterior shower is also featured.
GALLEY
In an area as busy as the galley, Roadtrek
made great use of this space by offering
easy access via the sliding door. With six
feet, two inches of headroom never once
did we worry about banging our head
upon entering. The galley was appropriately designed with a 5.0 cubic-foot
fridge with freezer – one of the largest
we have seen in a Class B – plus a large
sink with hot and cold running water, a
two-burner propane stovetop with cover,
and a 110V 700 watt, 0.7 cubic-foot
microwave just above the sink. The allaluminum backsplash makes for easy
clean-ups and the retractable leaf extension adds extra counter space and convenience when serving meals. Two 12V
outlets and USB ports are also featured
and there is a Fantastic Fan overhead.
Overall water capacities for the ZION
include 140 L for freshwater, 36 L for
black water and 86 L for grey water.
ADDED CONVENIENCES
We road tested our ZION during a relentless heat wave so there wasn’t a need
to use the 16,000 BTU automatic propane furnace. However, to our relief, we
did use the standard 11,000 BTU roofmounted A/C. Vents for the A/C were
on either side of the living area in rear

and provided all-around cool comfort on
demand. The automotive A/C effectively
cools the front of the vehicle when you
are on the road.
With its long list of standard equipment and very few options, the ZION
comes well-equipped and is ready to
hit the road when you are. However,
an option worth considering, which
we are seeing used more and more of
in campgrounds, is the roof-top solar
power charging systems as an alternative
power source. Our test unit didn’t come
equipped with this option, but the ZION
is solar-ready and speak to your dealer
about the highlights and benefits of this
natural power source. You may also want
to inquire about the under-hood 280amp 12V generator and Onan MicroLite
gasoline generator and EcoTrek lithium
power modules, which are just a few of
the extras available.
With new models rolling out as 2016
approaches, our guess is that the ZION
will be around for many model years to
come. From the built-in navigation system and the intelligent driving Stability
program to the many comfortable standards, the Roadtrek ZION is a very practical Class B motorhome for couples or
young families on the move. www.roadtrek.com

Gulf Coast
Adventure
Matagorda and the Gulf Coast region offers unspoiled beauty, seafood,
fishing and more, making it a true four-season destination.
I
t simply reached the point where I couldn’t take
the cold any longer. I’m as fiercely Canadian as
the next person, but after three straight months
of frigid temperatures I desperately needed an escape
– somewhere warm, somewhere comfortable, and
somewhere that wasn’t going to break the bank. The
answer was at the end of US 60.
Follow that road south till the pavement ends
at the Gulf of Mexico, and you’ll find yourself in
Matagorda, Texas. A visit to this beautiful town is
like a step back in time, before so much of the Gulf
Coast became over-exposed and commercialized with
the generic chain restaurants and big-box retail that
leave one part of the US looking exactly like the next.
Matagorda is refreshingly original and genuine – and
one of my favourite to plot into my GPS.
The Fertile Landscape
The town of Matagorda, with a population of less
than 2,000, is centrally located within the much
larger Matagorda County, where the Colorado River
meets the sea. The word “Matagorda” is a Spanish
term meaning “thick bush,” and this aptly describes
the lush marshes that line the river delta and the
adjacent bays.
The town of Matagorda is located on a wide strip
of sand that separates Matagorda Bay, to the west,
with smaller East Matagorda Bay to the east – both
protected from the Gulf of Mexico by an enormous
sandbar that runs for miles all along the Texas coast
into Mexico. The peninsula upon which the town sits
is itself divided by the Colorado River, as it flows
between the two bays and directly into the Gulf. It’s
hard to visit the area without the phrase “water, water,
everywhere” repeatedly coming to mind.
The shallow waters, lush bayous and nutrient-rich
shorelines provide outstanding habitat for an enormous variety of birds, including a number of threatened species. Matagorda is a popular destination for
serious birdwatchers, especially during winter months
when bird numbers peak due to seasonal migrations.
In fact, Matagorda annually hosts the highest count
of migrating birds recorded anywhere in the United
States. One of the best locations to see dozens of species in a day is the municipal bird watching park on
the Colorado River near the State Highway 35 bridge.
A trio of National Wildlife Refuges – Big Boggy,
Justin Hurst and Brazoria – protect thousands of acres
of shorelines just east of town, and provide further
outstanding opportunities to observe both exotic and
familiar birds alike.
Agricultural activities along the coastline also
attract birds. The shallow, wet soil is perfect for growing rice, and in spring and fall it is not unusual to see
tens of thousands of migrating ducks and geese sampling the crop. Farmers may not approve, but raids by
passing waterfowl are simply considered the cost of
doing business here.

Matagorda is a great place to spot both
migrating and resident birds not commonly
seen in Canada, like this snowy egret.
Of course, the white sand beaches are a
popular pastime for visitors of all ages.
The protected, shallow waters around
Matagorda attract a lot more than birds
– they also call to fishermen. Whether
drifting from a boat, casting from the
shore or by wading the shallows, anglers
here enjoy consistent success catching
a variety of saltwater game fish, with
flounder, spotted sea trout and redfish
being the most popular species. While
flounder typically run about the size of a
dinner plate (an interesting coincidence,
given how delicious they taste) sea trout
can approach 30 inches in length and
trophy redfish can grow even larger.
If you’re looking to tangle with
something really big, then opportunities for big game fishing offshore in the
Gulf are also excellent. King mackerel
weighing up to 80 pounds are prized by
local anglers, along with dolphin (the

known in local restaurants as “mahimahi”), wahoo, cobia grouper, amberjack and several varieties of tuna. A
number of fishing charter boats operate
from Matagorda Harbor, offering both
inshore and offshore adventures, with
all tackle provided.
A Diner’s Delight
While it’s usually pretty easy to catch
all the fish you like in Matagorda
Bay (especially if you go out with a
guide), seafood is readily available by
conventional means just about everywhere. Blackened redfish is a local
favourite, second only to Gulf Oysters
in overall popularity.
With shells reaching lengths of up
to seven inches, Golf Oysters have a
pale white to gray shell that’s quite a
bit lighter in colour than those from
Canada’s east coast. Matagorda’s salty
tidal waters create ideal oyster habitat,
so they’re not only abundant, but inexpensive enough that anyone can indulge
to their heart’s content without fear of
breaking the bank. Peak season is during
the cooler months when I like to visit,
from September through April.
Matagorda is also home to a large
shrimp fishing fleet, so it’s no surprise
to find shrimp featured in almost every
restaurant and market. For the freshest fare, buy your shrimp right off the
boats at the commercial harbor in nearby
Palacios, a half-hour west of Matagorda
off Highway 35.
Since seafood is incredibly healthy,
you’ll have no guilt by indulging in desert with another Matagorda favourite –
the deep fried Mars bar. Picture a Mars
bar dipped in fish-and-chip batter, then
popped into the deep fryer and you pretty

Still blessedly void of the generic
chains, it offers a chance to enjoy

RV-Dedicated
Direction
RV Lifestyle
showcases select
RV-dedicated GPS
models that offer
some of the latest
technology to make the
most of your travels. lobal Positioning Systems (GPS) units are perhaps the most utilized devices that help drive the
RV lifestyle. Easy, one-touch access to routes,
weather, traffic, attractions – to name a few of the functions – have made life on the road not only easier, but
safer and more convenient for RVers.
“The way RVers use a GPS is quite different from other
motorists,” says Dave Marsh, vice president of research and
development for Rand McNally. “RVers travel casually, and
when they are in unfamiliar areas, GPS technology provides
reassurance that a route will be safe for their type of travel.”
G

RV Lifestyle | Volume 44 Number 4
Some devices available on the market offer routing
that considers bridge clearances, weight restrictions, ease
of accessibility, road conditions and other regulations
for every trip. While “getting there is always half the
fun,” it’s important to be able to find points of interest,
including comprehensive local campground information,
restaurants, truck stops, towing services, repair and RV
centres.
Travel and fuel logs, trip information and lane assistance guides further assist RVers with more efficient time
on the road.
Rand McNally
RVND 7730LM
From the company that’s always
been headed in the right direction when it comes to mapping,
routing, and digital trip planning,
Rand McNally – considered the
first company to offer a GPS built
specifically for RV travel – has
designed its RVND 7730LM, a
dedicated GPS that provides all
the detailed route information
RVers need.
The screen of the RVND 7730LM
measures a little more than 7x4
inches and offers comprehensive and current map information
of Canada and the United States,
ensuring accurate road and trip
information for every destination.
Maintaining its philosophy of providing what Rand
McNally calls “ease of first
use,” the RVND 7730LM
is user-friendly and all features are easily accessible with
its simplified screen. Simply enter
your RV unit style, choose your
desired route, (as well as fuel stops,
shopping districts and attractions
along the way) and the 7730 does
the rest.
For example, the RVND 7730LM
features millions of points of interests to choose from including RV
service centers, restaurants, parks,
and local attractions while RV parks
are updated from area to area.
A unique feature of the RVND
7730LM is Advanced Lane
Guidance, which informs drivers of
sharp turns, steep inclines, bridge
clearances or other road conditions
before your approach. There’s also
“Junction View” that indicates
upcoming exits, number of lanes per
exit, and distance to the upcoming
exit and lane.
What’s more is the company’s
web-based TripMaker (available at
tripmaker.randmcnally.com) that
allows users to build, plan and manage a full itinerary (prior to or during a trip), which then can be conveniently uploaded to the RVND
7730LM. Multiple trips within a trip can be
also input directly into the RVND
7730LM and users can also access
the Rand McNally Editor’s Pick
function to gain access to up-to-date
weather, current fuel pricing, and
more (via Hot Spot on a cellular
phone). The company even provides
its GPS owners with access to Rand
McNally’s Dock, which enables free
updates.

Magellan
RV 9365T-LMB
There’s a lot to like about the
Magellan RV 9365T-LMB. With too
many features to list, some highlights we like about this GPS is the
seven-inch touch screen LCD that
has an adjustable day/night view
display offering quick, convenient
views of data. Similar to other units
in the RV-dedicated market, the RV
9365T-LMB offers Customizable RV
routes to navigate a route specific
to an RV’s dimensions that includes
non-paved roads, road restrictions
and more.
It comes pre-loaded with a
Good Sam RV Travel Guide and
Campground Directory featuring
comprehensive private and pub-
lic campground information to suit
individual needs. It even provides
an exclusive RV sani-dump station
directory to dump gray and black
water tanks.
There’s also no need to worry
about locating points of interest along your route when you
need it as the RV 9365T-LMB
is said to offer up to eight million points of interest to easily
located service stations, restaurants, shopping, even ATMS.
You can also set and personalize various points of interest
along your route.
The unit is back-up camera
and rear-view camera ready
and the Personalized One-Touch
Favorites Menu lets RVers store
and easily access favourite points of
interest.

Garmin
RV 760 LMT/ RV660 LMT
With its seven-inch, 800 x 480-pixel colour
TFT screen and an abundance of features, the
Garmin RV 760LMT can display the type of
information an RVer needs, when they need it. The RV 760LMT comes loaded with detailed
maps of North America – U.S, Canada, and
Mexico, and for the utmost convenience simply enter your designated route, along with
your RV’s specifications (such as unit style,
height, weight, length and width) and the unit
determines the best route suitable for your RV
and trip. These include RV-related restrictions
such as bridge heights (for many major roads
and highways) plus warnings for possible steep
grades and sharp, undesirable corners and
routes. According to the company, customized
RV routing is only for the U.S. and Canada.
Another key highlight is its expansive RV
Parks & Services Directory (for Canada and
the United States) that includes approximately
20,000 sites available at the national/state parks
and privately owned campgrounds. RVers can
also customize their search based on specific
criteria that suits their camping lifestyle. The
760LMT can relay 14,000 searchable service
locations such as truck stops, tire shops, towing
companies, and repair services.
According to Garmin, the RV 760LMT consistently offers map updates (useful for the life of
your device) to provide the most current information on routes, mapping details, points of
interest, plus parks and services.
The unit is also compatible with the company’s popular Basecamp interface, which is
accessible via a laptop and allows RVers to
manage detailed trips and download the data
to the RV 760LMT, and the BC20 Wireless
Backup Camera.
Another unit highlighted this year from
Garmin is the RV 660LMT. While it offers many
similar features as the RV 760LMT, new functions include Easy Route Shaping, which allows
RV users to change routes to include preferred
roads or cities just by touching the screen, and
the Elevation Profile that displays a map tool
with possible steep grades along a route for customers to exercise caution. Other differences
between the two units include a six-inch screen,
it’s preloaded with POIs from Foursquare, and
it’s compatible with the BC30 Backup Camera.

LUND’s Terrain HX Step is an aggressively-designed, yet

WIPE-OUT
Keep your windshield free of water, bug guck
and dirt with the Platinum Scrubblade windshield wipers from Scrubblade. According to the
company, the newly redesigned wiper blades are
made of rubber and steel (in place of plastic) to
ensure durability and functionality in all weather
conditions. In addition to its texture difference
along the wiper blade, which breaks up bugs and
debris, other highlights include an inside trailing
blade that squeegees away water, clearing any
remaining dirt, and a rubber frame cover designed
