Last week, your President was at the DISTAS in Dagupan with IP Raffy and his team of
Directors. It is the reason why our Board of Directors has decided to take the opportunity of
the fellowship party at my house last Friday evening to do our regular meeting as outdoor
meeting.
May is “Public Relations Month” and it is good to note that our Golf Tournament last
Saturday, April 28 has been good Public Relation for our Club. Indeed, IP Raffy has made this
Golf tournament a successful one by the important number of sponsors who supported our
annual fund raising event. I hope that RC Baguio will continue to be well known among the
businessmen of the City of Baguio.
Membership Development
I will continue to insist on the importance for the search of new members for us to
maintain dynamism in our club. By bringing in younger members, we can expect new ideas,
more dynamism in our activities and this addition will assure the perenniality of the club.
Vocational Service
The last work for this Rotary Year is the installation of a Rotary Marker along Marcos
Highway, on the corner of the road going to Poyopoy and Luding where we have our
adopted village.
Community Service
The last medical mission of this Rotary Year 2006-07 will be done on Friday, May 11 in
Poyopoy/Luding to make sure that all particularly the little children are in good condition to
restart their school year.
Please register today with Maritess and be at the meeting point at BGH Petron station by
8:00 AM so that we could go all there together.
PN/VP Bert Talco has finished his consultation with the different suppliers for our Luding
Water System Project, and now we are starting the works for our Matching Grant No. 60223.
We have to send soon our first report to our District Matching Grant Chair PP Gloria
Netherccut and to our foreign partner - the Rotary Club of Cannes.
Literacy
Rtn. Charles Kang has sent me the information about our 3 foreign clubs partner and the
signatures of their Presidents for the Matching Grant No. 61459 for the purchase of a Braille
embosser. The Agreement Form when accomplished will be sent to Grant Coordinator
Meredith Burlew. Our partner clubs just need to complete their payments and send us the
pay slip so that we could send it to TRF to complete the process.
Our Korean partners have requested to come to Baguio for the ceremony of the delivery
of the Braille embosser to the Institute of Inclusive Education which will be done when we
receive the money from TRF and the purchase of the Braille embosser, we hope to accomplish
this before June’s end.
International
We have done good progress on the third Matching Grant concerning the supply of
computers to Poyopoy Elementary School, Taloy Norte and SPED for deaf, and for which we
want to send to TRF the application Form on 01 July 2007. Indeed we have received an Email from Governor John Rowe, Rotary International District 3500 in Port Pirie, South Australia,
requesting to receive the electronic form of our Application Form given on paper to PP Bob
Ward, to complete it on their side. Governor John told us that he believed that he has found
support from one of the Clubs in his District to be our second foreign partner. AG Linda
confirmed that it will be the Rotary Club of Clare Valley in South Australia. We have to send
now the electronic application form to our two foreign partners to fill their part and apply the
signatures of their representatives.
RCB Golf Tournament
The RCB 11th Golf Tournament has been a success. IP Raffy and his Golf Tournament
committee have done a good job and everything went very well - the important number of
sponsors, the golf tournament, the putting contest, the awarding, the raffle and a good
dinner with good Burgundy red wine and good alcohols.
Thank you to all our members who supported IP Raffy for the Hole Sponsorship and the
raffle prices.
Congratulations to the RCB member golfers and their Anns who played for this tournament
and the ones who had good performance, as Treas. Adviser Ike Dulnoan, IPP Mike Pearson,
RA Nitz Palma and your obedient servant.

Awards and raffle prices
District Affair
The DISTAS has been successful as we have had five very interesting GHS, and it is not often that all the GHS are
very good. There were more than 600 participants and everybody appreciated the GHS, the workshops, the good food,
the raffle and the following fellowship. You can see that the Barong of the Presidents for the RY 2007-08 is far more
pleasant, but our time is nearly finished.
Please do not forget to register with Maritess for our Year End Review in Dagupan on 02 June 2007. The fees are P
600.00 until May 18 and P 800 later. PE Raffy, PN/VP Bert, Sec. Ben and RA Sec. Cely, Treas. Marilyn, Dir. Uwe, Dir. Mai
and I have registered and paid during the DISTAS.
Please, it should be good for our club to have a good number of representatives to support our Governor Bishop
Cinense for his last District event.
Fellowships
I thank a lot all our members who came with their family on my birthday party last Friday, May 04. I hope that
everyone enjoyed it. (see page 10)

ELEVENTH RCB GOLF FELLOWSHIP
EVENT SYNOPSIS
Your RCB Golf Fellowship Committee worked hard to
assure that our “Golfing For a Cause” Fund Raising
Activity went well. Tee-off time started promptly at 6:30
AM, as previously set. A total of 45 golfers participated—
to compete for the many trophies at stake. Aside from
golfers from RCB, a number of out-of-town Rotarians
joined us.
The culmination of the event was the Evening
Awarding which was tone-set with cocktails at 6:00 PM at
the BCC Rooftop. Sixty Rotarians, Anns, Rotakids and
guests enjoyed the evening party which began at 6:30 PM
with a generous evening buffet. Trophies and a good
number of raffle prizes guaranteed that all in attendance
went home with a wide smile. Many thanks to all who
made our event a resounding success.

IN RETROSPECT
The Meeting That Was

Like instant coffee, I became today’s retrospector at the blink of an eye. And although brewed coffee
tastes better, instant coffee takes less time to prepare and also does take care of the job, perking you up in the
morning. How could I refuse my first cousin, Treasurer Marilyn Barredo? She’s supposed to do our In
Retrospect article but she took over Program Coordinator, a very important part of our meeting, so she
couldn’t do both at the same time and give justice and proper attention to each task at hand. So she sought
help from family (read, yours truly). Rotarians should always be like that, because we’re also a “family”.
They are ready to pitch in, lend a hand, and help one another out at a moment’s notice. I remember having
read in the autobiography of a famous Hollywood actress, Audrey Hepburn, who once said, “God gave us
two hands, the right one to help ourselves, and the left hand to help others.”
Today’s meeting started ten minutes late, called to order by President Gerard at 12:40. It was Ladies Day,
but you’d think otherwise because there were only 2 RotaryAnns among us, namely RA President Maylene
Dayrit and the better half of President Gerard, RotaryAnn Terry Audineau. Invocation was piously done by
President Maylene, followed by our Philippine National Anthem sung energetically by all members.
Next up was our Rotary Hymn, sung by all in a circle formation, hand in hand, with the link between
Rotarian Pam Perkins and myself being broken late into the song to accommodate a late entry into the circle,
Secretary Ben Ladilad. Entertainment came up next with the vivacious and bubbly President Maylene singing
“The way we were” acapella, intrepid and gutsy in her melodius voice. That’s just the way I like it. PP
Johnny Zarate did the honors to introduce the head table and visiting personalities. Next at the podium came
Rotarian Emil Dayrit as Fine Master and he complimented about RCB 11th Golf Tournament with 60 % of
the sponsors being solicited by Incoming President Raffy Chan. President Maylene, with a little help from
our program coordinator, did the Raffle draw of tumblers and seat covers, and among the winners were Bert
Talco, Joe Ramos, Herb Meadows, Uwe Koller, Marilyn Barredo, Ben Ladilad and yours truly.
Members Time saw PP Diony Claridad making a pitch for attendance for the Golf Fellowship night,
intriguingly starting his sentence by saying “If you want to see more of me tonight….” Rotarian Joey Bugayong
updated the club about the medical condition of our very own Rotarian Andre Sommereaux, admitted into
SLU Hospital. President Gerard announced that the last medical mission for his term would be held on May
11 at Poyopoy, Marcos Highway. He also announced that the DISTAS 2007 for IP Raffy Chan would be
held in Dagupan next week at the Leisure Coast Resort. Then we all sang an impromptu Happy Birthday for
Cely Ladilad.
Moving on to the more serious part of the program saw Director Uwe Koller introducing our baby
Rotarian, Dhory Vicencio doing her Classification Talk on “Sales, Mall Operation”. She is a Marketing and
Management Degree holder from College of the Holy Spirit. She works with Pacific Land, owners of
Abanao Square, as their Mall Operations Manager. She is what you call a Property Management consultant,
and although we were unable to view an audio-video clip on Abanao Square that she brought over but was
unable to connect to the internet, Rotarian Dhory extemporaneously did her talk with much enthusiasm and
passion, ending up by singing the Abanao Square jingle. It was nice to get to know more about our baby
Rotarian Dhory.
The question and answer portion came up and our GHS was asked whether she had her own Property
Management consultancy because Rotarian Cecile Apostol would like to patronize Dhory’s company.
Our club response was given by Rotarian Flo Bayquen who said RCB was blessed because we had our
Classification speaker as one of our members.
Meeting was adjourned a couple of minutes before 2 PM, to end another fruitful and enjoyable RC Baguio
fellowship.

EVENT SYNOPSIS
May 04, 2007 was marked in our calendar as our
President had invited us to celebrate his birthday in his
lovely home. The affair started early as the invitation
stated 5:00 PM. Rotarians, Anns, Rota-Kids and friends
gathered around the swimming pool and enjoyed the dinks
and tête-à-tête. A brief meeting was also conducted with
the Member’s Time and President’s Message as the main
agenda. Dinner followed and we took our preferred places.
Some stayed around the swimming pool while others
stayed inside the house. A surprise guest entertained us
with lovely songs and thereafter we entertained ourselves
with jokes and impromptu song and dance numbers. It
was a fun-filled evening and a real celebration with family
and friends.

Evil Continues

This week the much awaited sequel of Spiderman
swings into theaters nationwide with a twist on Peter
Parker’s devotion to MJ and his duties as a superhero.
With new villains out to get him, the story’s plot focuses
on Peter’s transformation with his suit changes to jetblack and enhancing his powers, propelling the
vengeful side of his personality that he is struggling to
control. Possessing greater power, he became
overconfident and starts to neglect the people who
care for him most.
Peter’s dilemma is a classic example among us
about the continuing battle of good and evil. Every
single day, we are faced with circumstances that we
need to make a choice. The process of making that
choice lies the battle… whether you being a Rotarian,
a business man, an employee, father or a mother, a
friend, a politician …the battle to do good or evil (to
do wrong) takes place in making that every decision.
Sometimes we just ignore it and convinced ourselves
that we just did what needed to be done. But
oftentimes, the consciousness of doing what is right
or wrong is right there in front of us like a mirror
reflecting who we really are. In simple cases for us
Rotarians, the battle lies in these questions:
1. Shall I give my support to the President and his
Board? (Whoever those leaders might be even
though you don’t like them.)
2. Shall I get my self involve with the club’s service
and community programs?
3. I don’t like some members of the club; shall I say
negative things about them?
4. Being a Rotarian is tough (especially in RCB)
shall I quit?
The good thing about being a Rotarian is that we
have solid guiding principles that challenge the very
core of our character…which always brings us to –
The Four Way Test.
On Monday, it’s National Election once again and
we will be making choices of whom to vote for, a
selection amongst the good and evil. It’s not easy, life
has never been. We can only hope that the goodness
of Rotary will transcend our politics and that Rotarians
will remain shining examples of those who’s winning
in the fight against evil.
Like Spiderman, most of the times the battle takes
place within.
A man was sick and tired of going to work every day
while his wife stayed home.
He wanted her to see what he went through so he
prayed:
“Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in 8 hours
while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know
what I go through, so please allow her body to switch with
mine for a day. Amen.”
God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish.
The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a
woman.
He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the
kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed
their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked
up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners and stopped at
the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then
drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and
balanced the check book. He cleaned the cat’s litter box
and bathed the dog.
Then it was already 1P.M. and he hurried to make the
beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and Mop
the kitchen floor. Ran to the school to pick up the kids and
got into an argument with them on the way home. Set out
milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their
homework, then set up the ironing board and watched TV
while he did the ironing. At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes
and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops
and snapped fresh beans for supper.
After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher,
folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed.
At 9 PM. he was exhausted and, though his daily chores
weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to
make love, which he managed to get through without
complaint.
The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by
the bed and said: Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong
to envy my wife’s being able to stay home all day. Please,
oh! oh! please, let us trade back.”
The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied:
“My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will
be happy to change things back to the way they were.
You’ll just have to wait nine months, though. You got
pregnant last night.”

District’s novel approach to leadership development
fuses personal growth, Rotary ethics.

Past RI Vice President Sonny Brown (right) meets with

To foster the development of leadership skills and
increase awareness about Rotary at the club level, the RI
Board recently created the optional club-level trainer
position. RI provides basic guidelines, but how clubs and
districts implement the program is limited only by their own
creativity.
During the past two years, members of two Rotary clubs
in El Paso, Texas, USA, have developed a unique training
program called the Institute for Leadership, which focuses
on cultivating individuals as leaders and fuses Rotary
values with personal growth concepts. The two-day
leadership development seminar was developed by a
Rotarian team that includes Past RI Vice President Irving J.
“Sonny” Brown and three professional leadership trainers
(all past club presidents and a governor-elect). Though
initially planned for Rotarians alone, the training program
is now offered as a community service to other organizations
or individuals. The institute can help serve the community
and attract prospective members to join a Rotary club.
How does it all work? We sat down with Brown to find
out.
Q: Why did you create the Institute for Leadership
training program?
A: We wanted to provide Rotarians with a personal
growth experience that would serve them not only in Rotary
but also in their family, business, and community — without
great expense and time.
Q: Who participates?
A: The program is uniquely Rotarian, but not only for
Rotarians. We want to promote Rotary as an avenue for
personal growth to all members and prospective members.
For Rotarians, we try to inspire and awaken greater passion
for leading and serving through Rotary. We want Service
Above Self to come alive in every Rotarian.
Q: What’s on the agenda?
A: We don’t deal with Rotary club management or
Rotary information, but rather focus on Rotary values such
as ethics and leadership. Our interactive exercises cover
subjects such as collective potential, building rapport and
teamwork, leadership styles, coaching and development,
leadership commitment, the art of listening, and leading by
example. We also incorporate essential Rotary values, such
as The Four-Way Test, the Object of Rotary, and the
Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions.
Q: What inspired you and your colleagues to develop
this program?
A: Most of the organizers have been involved in RYLA
for years. Of course, RYLA focuses on fostering youth
leadership, but all Rotarians who are personally involved
in RYLA find their own leadership skills become greatly
enhanced at the same time. So we thought to ourselves,
“Why not offer a ‘RYLA for Rotarians’?” It was an exciting
prospect! Since we began planning in November 2001, over
200 participants have graduated, and more than 30 have
become Rotary club presidents. Other participants have
become officers or board members of their clubs. We have
been actively promoting the program in neighboring
districts, and currently five districts have started their own
program. Attending the most recent event [16-17 March]
were representatives of three Rotary districts from
Oklahoma, Arizona, and another Texas district. Incoming
Director Phil Silvers joined this latest group as a participant.
Q: How does the program help Rotary?
A: As individual Rotarians develop their leadership
skills and enhance their personal growth, they gain a deeper
understanding of Rotary values. All of that serves to build
Rotary’s future. Rotarians who invest two days in our
program gain a lifetime understanding of who they are as
leaders. We help them identify skills that will enable them
to perform as leaders at the highest possible level. Most
importantly, the meeting helps participants discover
themselves and the brings out the great potential that is
within each Rotarian.
Q: How can others get involved?
A: Just contact me via an e-mail. We have an open
invitation to any district to send representatives to our
seminars, so that they gain a personal understanding of
the benefit and the challenge of starting such a program.
The program has been so successful in its designed format
that we are excited to share it with districts that wish to
start their own event. It all starts with training facilitators
who have participated in one of our seminars. To assist
other districts in starting the program, we are very willing
to send members of our team to assure that the training of
their trainers is complete. Follow-up support is always
available, as may be requested.
