his is the 23rd year of the South Carolina 100 , the ranking
of the state’s largest privately held companies. The South
Carolina 100 is compiled by Grant Thornton LLP, the fifth
largest accounting firm in the United States, under the
direction of Mark Ballew, Partner, in cooperation with the South Carolina
Chamber of Commerce.
Total revenues for the 2007 South Carolina 100 are $19.9 billion,
compared with $19.8 billion in 2006. Milliken & Company of Spartanburg
remains the top company in the ranking as the state’s largest privately held
business. Other companies in the top 10 include: The InterTech Group Inc.
and Affiliates (No. 2); J M Smith Corporation (No. 3); Southeastern Freight
Lines Inc. (No. 4); Piggly Wiggly Holdings LLC (No. 5); Mount Vernon Mills
Inc. (No. 6); Dearybury Oil & Gas Inc. (No. 7); Blanchard Machinery Company
(No. 8); Carolinas Recycling Group LLC (No. 9); and Carolina-Eastern Inc.
(No. 10).
Twenty-three of the companies in this listing are manufacturers,
representing $8.6 billion in revenues, or about 43 percent of the total
SM
revenue. South Carolina 100
manufacturers’ employees account for
approximately 41,000 workers, or 47 percent of the jobs represented in the
survey. Twenty-seven of the companies are wholesale distribution companies
with $6 billion in revenues and approximately 9,600 employees.
This year, 15 companies in the ranking appear for the first time or have
returned after an absence. They are Dilmar Oil company Inc. (No. 54);
Interfilm Holdings Inc. (No. 59); Contract Construction Inc. (No. 78); General
Information Services Inc. (No. 79); PalmettoNet Inc. (No. 81); Yeargin Potter
Shackelford Construction Inc. (No. 84); Glasscock Company Inc. (No. 86);
Thompson Industrial Services LLC (No. 90); BFG Communications (No. 92);
Dillon Provision Co. Inc. (No. 94); Colite International Ltd. (No. 95); C. Ray

The companies with rank increases of 10 or more for 2007 were Dargan

Enterprises Inc., Carolina-Eastern Inc., Colinx LLC, Easley Custom Plastics
Inc., Gateway Supply Company Inc., H.G. Reynolds Company Inc., and IMIC
Hotels, all up 13 positions; Southern States Packaging Co., up 12; Life Cycle
Engineering Inc., up 11; and McCalls Inc., Wolverine Brass Inc., and General
Wholesale Distributors LLC, which all jumped 10 places.
Participation in the South Carolina 100 is voluntary, and companies are
ranked based upon net revenues for their most recently completed fiscal
year. To qualify, companies must be privately held and headquartered in
South Carolina. They cannot be a subsidiary of another company. Financial
institutions, insurance companies, real estate and other brokerages, health
care organizations, and companies primarily engaged in retail are not eligible
for the South Carolina 100 listing.
