No. 4 Georgia To Battle No. 3 UCLA
After wrapping up SEC competition last week, fourth-ranked Georgia will close the regular season
with three straight non-conference opponents starting with a home meet against No. 3 UCLA Friday
at 7:30 p.m. This will be the fifth time in nine meets the Gym Dogs have faced a top-three opponent.
Georgia is coming off a 197.525-196.825 loss at No. 1 Florida last week, while the Bruins defeated
Arizona State, 198.050-194.850, on Sunday. Georgia and UCLA have combined to win 13 of the last 15
NCAA titles, including seven by the Gym Dogs and six by the Bruins.
Georgia-UCLA History
This marks the 52nd all-time meeting between Georgia and UCLA with the Gym Dogs holding a
35-16 advantage. In 16 dual meets between the two schools, Georgia is 12-4.
Georgia has won the last four regular season meetings, including a thrilling 197.900-197.875
win over the eventual national champion Bruins in 2010 and a 196.175-195.750 win last year in Los
Angeles. This is UCLA’s third trip to Athens in as many years. In the 2011 NCAA Athens Regional, the
Bruins and Gym Dogs placed first and second, respectively, to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Noteworthy
UCLA scored a 198.050 in its win over Arizona State last Sunday. The last time a team posted a 198
was in 2009 when Georgia beat Florida 198.200-196.650 ... Georgia and Florida lead the country with
20 consecutive rotations of scoring a 49.0 or higher ... Noel Couch has competed in the all-around in
a school record 22-straight meets. She set a career-high with a 39.450 against Kentucky on Feb. 18,
and nearly matched it with a 39.425 at Florida last week ... Based on scoring averages, Georgia ranks
fourth overall, third on bars, fourth on beam, eighth on floor and ninth on vault.
Last Time Out
Georgia posted its second-highest road score of the season, but it wasn’t enough to beat No. 1
Florida as the Gators prevailed 197.525-196.825 last Friday at the O’Connell Center. The Gym Dogs
lost despite their highest road vault score of the year and their second-best road bars, beam and floor
scores. Kat Ding had a 39.450 in her third straight all-around, and Noel Couch nearly matched her
career-high with a 39.425.
Rankings
Georgia enters the month of March and the final two weeks of the regular season ranked No. 4 in
the GymInfo Top 25. This week’s edition of the rankings is the first this year to use Regional Qualifying
Scores, and the Gym Dogs have an RQS of 196.830. In the event rankings, Georgia is No. 2 on bars with
a 49.260, fourth on beam (49.150), sixth on floor (49.170) and ninth on vault (49.240).
Individually, Kat Ding is ranked No. 1 nationally on the uneven bars with a 9.905 RQS, and she is
tied for fifth on vault with a 9.910. Gina Nuccio is tied for 10th on bars with a 9.875, Shayla Worley is
tied for 10th on beam (9.870), and Noel Couch is tied for 10th on floor (9.880). Couch is also ranked
No. 15 in the all-around (39.240), and sophomore Cat Hires is tied for 20th on vault (9.875).
UCLA jumped to No. 3 with a 197.025 RQS, and the Bruins are ranked first nationally on vault with
a 49.450, second on floor (49.265), third on the balance beam (49.220) and fifth on the uneven bars
(49.205). UCLA has three gymnasts ranked in the top 10 on two events. On vault, Vanessa Zamarripa is
ranked second, Olivia Courtney is tied for fifth, and Samantha Peszek is tied for seventh on beam.

RQS (Regional Qualifying Score): Qualification for
regional competition is based on a team’s and an
all-around competitor’s six best regular-season-meet
scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the
regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
RQS begins Feb. 27.
