A change in the
lineup!
Longtime readers of The Villager know that in our early years
we had one of the best sports sections in a community paper. Our
original Sports Editor was
Arthur Coleman who put us on
the map sports wise.
When we lost Coleman, we
went through a long period without a Sports Editor and was covering sports on a very limited
basis. Then in the later part of
2006, we had a visit from a retired sports director from another city who had just moved to
Austin and wanted to know
whether or not we could use his
service.
George Hardin was not asking
for a job, he just wanted to contribute his expertise to our paper.
Sports Beat was created and
Hardin became the Sports Editor and he remained in that position until just recently, when he
decided to retire for real.
During George Hardin’s tenure, he became the face of The
Villager in the sports community
covering virtually every area of
sports activity. He was also a
gifted photographer. His photos
brought live to the stories that he
covered. During his five year tenure, we never give him an assignment. We would only share information about the events that
were happening during that
week. But, he usually already
had the information.
The Villager and the Austin
Sports community owe George
Hardin a debt of gratitude for his
outstanding service. Many of the
stories that he covered would
have never made it in any sports
section in the area. We thank him
for his dedicated service and look
forward to his continued friendship.
But, we have been blessed with
another individual who has
stepped into the void left by
Hardin. Our new Sports Editor
is Terry Davis. He was already
contributing articles on a limited
basis and immediately accepted
the challenge of continuing our
tradition of sports coverage in the
community. While Davis concentrates on college and professional
sports, he will be doing coverage
of the local high schools and
Huston Tillotson University
sports.
Terry Davis is also a contributor on “The Fans View,” a radio
talk show that airs live weekly on
Friday mornings from 9 to 10
a.m. on KAZI-FM (88.7). We
look forward to many years of
working with Davis and we hope
that many of you will get a
change to work with him.
Thank you George for your
many years of service and we
wish you success in your next
adventure. It has been a pleasure to work with such an experienced, professional journalist and photographer.
Welcome, Terry. You have
large shoes to fill. But, Austin
will make sure that you are successful. They have become accustomed to the best and they
will help you succeed.

The recipient of the Austin NAACP’s 46th DeWitty/
Overton Award is Dr. Gregory
J. Vincent, VP for Diversity &
Community at the University of
Texas. The recipients of the
Captain Louie White Award for
the first time, are (brothers) Police Officer Chris Davis, and Police Officer Lee Davis. It is because of their continued support,
our branch is able to assist the

AT L A N TA , G E O R GIA— November 4, 2011–
The National Minority Supplier Development Council,
Inc.®, (NMSDC®) presented Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
North America, Inc. (TEMA)
with the prestigious “Corporation of the Year” award at
a black-tie awards banquet to
cap its four-day conference
and business opportunity fair
in Atlanta, Georgia.
NMSDC’s Corporation
of the Year award is the most
sought-after honor for major
corporations that are dedicated to improving the overall participation of Asian,
Black, Hispanic and Native
American suppliers in the
global corporate supply
chain.
“This recognition is reserved for corporations that
fully embrace the value that
minority suppliers bring to
the corporate supply chain,”
said NMSDC President Joset
Wright. “Toyota’s commitment to supplier diversity
and minority supplier devel-
opment is firmly embedded
in the corporate culture. Its
comprehensive, world-class
supplier diversity process is
worthy of replication.” In
winning the award, TEMA
demonstrated a strong commitment to building capacity
and capability of minority
businesses within their corporation and in partnership
with NMSDC. The company
led two modules of
NMSDC’s Centers of Excellence program – a network of
regional business modules
comprised of corporate supplier diversity/purchasing
executives and minority
business enterprise (MBE)
owners. The program uses
NMSDC “best practices” for
minority supplier development to enhance corporate
supplier diversity processes
and build capacity for
MBEs. To date, seven participating MBEs companies
were awarded business directly
with Toyota. The automaker also
sponsored two companies in
NMSDC’s Corporate Plus® program, a special classification for
minority businesses with proven
success in executing national
contracts and the capacity to
handle more.

In recognition of Claudia
Williams’ 35th Year as Director
of Music at Saint James Missionary Baptist Church, a big
celebration was given on December 4. Ms. Williams’ family, her church, pastors, friends
and recording artists from
around the country joined to
wish her well. There were special musical performances and
words of congratulations from
Chester Baldwin, Tedd Winn,
Daryl Coley, Dunye Davis,
Beverly Crawford, Byron January, Lecresia Campbell, Evelyn
Henderson and Ronald Materre
to name a few. Recording giant
Keith Pringle made a grand and
surprise entrance while singing
his top hit, “Perfect Peace.”
Ms. Williams began directing choirs at the young age
of 14. Virgie C. DeWitty, music
teacher and choir director, was
a strong influence over the life
of young Claudia. Mrs.
DeWitty composed more than
100 gospel songs, spirituals, and
anthems. She taught music at
Anderson High School in Austin and composed the school
song. Mrs. DeWitty’s specialty
was writing four-part-harmony
anthems and religious music for
choirs.
“I would watch Ms.
DeWitty, and it made me want
to direct choirs. I learned how
to direct by watching her and I
wanted to take lessons from her.
I also watched Harriet Hardie at
my church, Greater Mount Zion.

great influence. They allowed
me to begin directing at the age
of 14, and at 16 years old, Barry
Franklin asked me to be the
guest directress for the Saint
James Church Choir’s Annual
Easter Musical,” according to
Ms. Williams. “With the approval of my family, I moved to
Saint James and directed their
Combined Youth & Young
Adult Choir. We were in the old
building at that time, and I enjoyed directing.”
Ms. Williams went on to
participate in the National Baptist Convention Choir, the Gospel Music Workshop of America
and the Austin City-Wide Choir.
“It was so funny. Austin CityWide’s choir director was unable to make an event in Dallas.
Mrs. Ruth Davis Saul and Mrs.
Edith McKinney called me and
asked me to fill in. I had no
preparation and had never rehearsed with the choir. That
gave me exposure and statewide
recognition. It took my career
as a director to another level,”
explained Ms. Williams.
After high school, Ms.
Williams studied at HustonTillotson University on a music scholarship. She majored in
elementary education and minored in music. In 1984 Ms.
Williams recorded her first album with her group, The Voices
of Christ, and she has recorded
many projects over the years.
When asked what advise
she would give to young
people today, Ms. Williams
had this to say, “Be Faithful.
Be dedicated. God will open
doors for you. I’ve been
greatly blessed, now my focus
is to help other ministries in
the Austin area that are struggling. I’ve been asked to work
in other areas of the state, but
my calling is here in Austin. I
have no plans to leave.”
Dukes Files for Re-election to Texas House
AUSTIN—Today, State
Representative Dawnna Dukes
(D-Austin) filed in the Democratic Primary to run for reelection to the Texas House of Representatives. Dukes, a third generation native of Austin has represented District 46, which comprises inner-city East Austin,
Pflugerville, Manor, and Northeast Travis County, for nine
terms.
“It is a distinct honor and
privilege to represent the constituents of District 46. I am
looking forward to the opportunity to continue serving the interests of District 46 constituents in
the state legislature,” said Dukes.
“During these troubling economic times, the residents of this
district expect someone they can
count on, someone who has lived
where they live, and someone
who can give voice to the needs
they face on a daily basis and endeavor to better their quality of
life.”
Currently, Dukes serves as
a respected member of the Committee on Appropriations,
Appropriation’s subcommittee on
Health and Human services and
is also a member of the Culture,
Recreation, and Tourism Committee.

by pushing to increase funding
for early childhood education,
smaller class sizes and to promote
dropout prevention programs. In
her commitment to increase
school safety and build safer
neighborhoods, Dukes created
tougher penalties against gang recruitment and activity, expanded
the “gun free school zones” provision, and championed statewide
teen dating violence legislation.
She has also fought to
make college more accessible to
low income students by co-sponsoring the $100 million TEXAS

CHURCH & TOWN BULLETIN
The Cain Train Has Been Derailed
Special to the NNPA from the AfroAmerican Newspaper
With his wife Gloria by his side,
Herman Cain, the Black Republican presidential candidate who was
accused of having a 13-year extramarital affair, announced that he
will drop out of the race while
fiercely denying the allegations
against him.
“With a lot of prayer and soul
searching, I am suspending my
presidential campaign, because of
the continued distraction, the continued hurt on me and my family,
not because we’re not fighters,”
Cain said.
“I am at peace with my God,”
Cain said. “I am at peace with my
wife and she is at peace with me.”
Cain, the former CEO of
Godfather’s Pizza, has been dogged
for weeks by allegations of sexual
harassment and a sexual affair.
Cain ultimately decided to suspend his campaign for president
after Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White appeared on television
to detail her 13-year affair with
Cain. She said the relationship began after they met at a business
meeting. Cain acknowledged a
friendship with White and said he
had been helping her financially, but
insisted it was not sexual.
“These false and unproved allegations continue to be spinned in
the media and in the court of public
opinion so as to create a cloud of
doubt over me and this campaign
and my family,” Cain insisted.
Cain has acknowledged that
White’s allegations have led to a
drop in campaign contributions,
and a Des Moines Register poll
shows his support among likely
Republican Iowa voters has fallen

to 8 percent, down from 23 percent in October. Cain told reporters that he repeatedly gave White
money to help her with “monthto-month bills and expenses.”
“I send checks to a lot of people;
I help a lot of people,” Cain told
Fox News. “That in itself is not
proof. So the other allegation in
terms of it being a 13-year physical relationship, that is her words
against my word.”
In her interview with MSNBC,
White said of her relationship with
Cain, “It wasn’t a love affair, it was
a sexual affair.”
“I am not a cold-hearted person,” White said. “I am a mother of
two kids and, of course, my heart
bleeds for this woman [Cain’s wife]
because I am a woman and being in
a situation like this cannot be fun.
And I am deeply, deeply sorry if I
have caused any hurt to her and to
his kids, to his family. That was
not my intention. I never wanted
to hurt anyone, and I am deeply
sorry.”
Two other women—Sharon Bialek
and Karen Kraushaar—previously
accused Cain of sexually harassing
them in the 1990s while he was head
of the National Restaurant Association. Two more women also have
said Cain sexually harassed them
while they worked at the association, but have declined to be
identified.At his rally in Atlanta,
Cain admitted, “I have made many
mistakes in life, everybody has.”
But he also told supporters that he
believed he was the right man for
the White House.“I grew up in a
world of segregated water fountains,” he said. “My father was a
chauffeur and my mother was a
maid. We showed that you didn’t
have to have a degree from Harvard
in order to run for president. We
showed that you didn’t have to
have a political pedigree...I am
proof that a common man could
lead this nation.”He left the crowd
with a defiant vow: “I am not going
to be silenced,” Cain said, “and I
am not going away.”
Just two days after his wife
Vanessa announced she would be seeking a divorce, withdrew the divorce petition and then resumed divorce proceedings, megapastor Eddie Long announced that he would be taking a leave
of absence from his position as senior
pastor of New Birth Missionary
Church.
“I’m still your pastor. You’ll still
receive my direction,” Long said Sunday. “You’ve given me some weeks to
take care of some family business.”
Long’s wife, Vanessa filed for
divorce late Thursday afternoon. She
said Friday morning she had changed
her mind but by day’s end announced
the divorce was on.
Bishop Long was sued in a September 2010 lawsuit by former New
Birth members Anthony Flagg, Spencer LeGrande, Jamal Parris and Maurice
Robinson, who alleged the bishop used
his influence, trips, gifts and jobs to
coerce them into sexual relationships.
The suit was settled in May
after months of mediation.
Former President George
W. Bush began a tour of Africa during the week of
Nov. 28 and, according to
Amnesty International, he
needs to see the inside of a
j a i l c e l l w h i l e h e ’s
there.The human rights
group is calling for the arrest of Bush for authorizing the use of torture techniques of suspected terrorists while he was president.
“All countries to which
George W. Bush travels
have an obligation to bring
him to justice for his role
in torture,” Matt Pollard,
senior legal advisor for
Amnesty International,
said in a statement. “International law requires that
there be no safe haven for
those responsible for torture; Ethiopia, Tanzania and
Zambia must seize this opportunity to fulfill their obligations and end the impunity George W. Bush has so
far enjoyed.”
According to Pollard,
there is enough evidence
from prisoners, American
Red Cross reports and
Bush himself for the twoterm president to be investigated for approving
waterboarding as a method
of interrogation. Bush told
NBC’s “The Today Show”
last year that the practice
was approved by his legal
team.
“The lawyer said it was
legal,” Bush said. “He said
it did not fall within the
anti-torture act. I’m not a
lawyer. But you gotta trust
the judgment of people
around you, and I
do.”Amnesty International
has written to the ministers
of justice in each country
and provided supporting
documentation to make
their case. Water- boarding
has been banned by President Barack Obama.

it wasn’t that much of a big

Students at my school don’t

EVERY SCHOOL THE COUGARS ARE COMING!!!!!
just reminds us that the second semester is coming
soon.
The second semester
will be an opportunity to
learn more. I enjoy studying.
The quality of studying depends on the environment. It
is good to study alone without friends, phones and music. This way to study will
help the brain focus on what
you are reading.
If there are distractions
the brain will have to remember too many things. Therefore, as the school semester
ends, find a good way to
study and this will help you
study better in the next semester.
Preparation!
are preparing for final exams
Tayla Terry
LBJ High School
This week I report to
you about preparation. The
word preparation means to
get ready beforehand. The
students at LBJ High School
and semester exams. This is
a hectic week for me and
other students because we
have to remember, retain and
reflect everything that we
have learned this school semester in preparation for our
test.
However, it should not
be a difficult task because
once you have learned the
skills and objectives, you will
remember it. Parents be patient with your child and their
home chores this week. Let’s
just call it a week to prepare
to be successful.
Remember kids and
adults stay in school and
stay off drugs.
First Ladies Try Out Week
Bria Good
LBJ High School
Since football season is over and since the
year of 2011 is coming to an
end, this is the perfect time
to round up a new bunch of
girls to join the Award Winning LBJ First Ladies Dance
team for the 2012-2013 school
year. This week is when it’s
all happening. The girls who
are interested will come in
and stretch with the recent
team members to get a feel of
how we work out. Then the
girls will learn a routine from
the officers and officer candidates to perform in front of
the judges on the audition
day.
I’m very excited for
these auditions because I remember when I was the one
to try out and how nervous
and excited I was. Now I’m
able to help the girls who I
once was. It’s very exciting
for every one to see who
their new team mates for next
year will be! GO JAGS!

Creative Photos
thrilled! In the past, I had taken
pictures, but I did not like them.
I assumed the portrait was going to be used in the yearbook.
The yearbook advisior informed
me that it is not going to be used,
unless I request for it. On friday,
in homeroom, I saw the photo
they were going to use. It was a
photo myself posing with my
winter coat on. Instead, I requested them to use my photo.
A lot of other people, requested
for their school portrait too. I still
think it is cool that the yearbook
staff tried to be creative with the
photos this year
Generally there is no need to study
for this assessment, because it’s
designed to acknowledge what you
know, and what you need to know.
But it is always better to be prepared, so here is some easy tips to
ease the anxiety and stress.
Start studying now, don’t
procrastinate, avoid cramming, review a little bit each day. Creating a
study schedule a few weeks before
the start of midterms is a great way
to stay on top of your studying. Sit
down and map out your exam schedule. Then, figure out what material
you need to study for each class.
Look over notes, book summaries
and reviews, and any additional
supplemental readings. Do a little
bit each day to avoid cramming at
the last minute.
Stay healthy. Being
healthy this time of year, is very
important. During the weeks leading up to exams, make sure that
your habits are healthy. Eat good
food, get a good night’s sleep, and
exercise. Exercising will ensure that
you have natural energy to get you
through the day. It will also be a
welcomed break from all that thinking.
Managing campaigns for corporations
around the clock, around the world.
Jaquarry Wilson
Del Valle High School
Unfortunately for students all across the United States,
that time has come again. A time
in which we all share a great deal
of abhorrence towards! A time
when we will be tested to see the
knowledge we’ve gained since
the start of the year. It’s an
abomination, an anathema, a time
of tediosity, greed, and exhaustion. It’s final exam week!
Final exam week is the last
week of school before winter
break in which all students take
rather difficult, lengthy tests that
gives our educators feedback
pertaining to how much we have
learned since August of 2011, or
the beginning of the 2011-2012
school year.
As previously stated,
these examinations are difficult
and hard, and the fact that we are
forced to take one for ever core
class (English, Math, Science, and
Social Studies), eats my insides.
Studying for these rigorous exams is very repetitive, intricate,
and time consuming. This is because you have to constantly attempt to recollect a profusion of
details you have acquired. Am I
excited for finals? Of course I’m
not. Personally, I don’t think anyone is. But, finals are another
chance to show my outstanding
ability to get good grades and
excel at any and everything I do.

Lady Rams
The Huston-Tillotson
Lady Rams took on the Paul
Quinn College Tigers of Dallas, Texas at their gym this
week. The Lady Tigers only
has five members on their basketball team, despite this fact
they battled till the very end.
The final score was 67-62 with
the Lady Rams coming out on
top. This is the first win of the
season for the Rams 1-5 and
1-3 in the Red River Athletic
Conference the Tigers fall to
2-7 and 1-2 in the RRAC.
The Lady Rams applied
pressure to the Lady Tigers
from the very beginning in an
effort to wear them down.
However the Lady Tigers were
not going anywhere. The Tigers play very smart and
stayed out of foul trouble. In
the first eight minutes there
were four lead changes and
four ties. At the 12:31 mark
of the first half Jasmine Dukes
would make a basket to make
the score 13-11 for the Rams.
Candice Smith would
put the Rams on her back for
the night and would have a
game high 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers were very
balanced on offense with four
of the five starters scoring in
double figures and Domonique
Mitchell would have 13 rebounds. Chaniese Turner did
a great job of controlling the
offense and tempo for the Tigers.
The Tigers had hustle
and desire all night with 5:13
left in the first half the Tigers
would take a 26-25 lead and
Lance Richardson #23 rises on his jumper. Photos by Terry
Davis
would have that lead until the
14:31 of the second half. The
Tigers largest lead of the
game was 7 at 37-30 at the
17:10 mark of the second half.
The Tigers would be down by
11 point nine minutes later at
54-43.
The game would be tied
at 57 with 2:42 left in the
game. Kevetta Williams
would score 5 points in 17
seconds to the give the Rams
some breathing room. The
Rams will play SW Assemblies of God University Saturday December 10 at 5:30 in
the Huston-Tillotson’s gym.
Men
Hutson-Tillotson Ram
met the Paul Quinn Tigers and
the game would be very entertaining from the start.
Aaron McCuin for the Tigers

position and the boards for the
Tigers. McCuin would lead
all scorers with 20 points and

had 12 rebounds. Lance
Richardson would have 18
points and 16 rebounds for the
Rams. The Tigers would hold
onto a 71-63 win over the
Rams.
Richardson would fight
hard on every possession to
keep the ball alive for his team
with six offensive rebounds.
The difference in the game was
the outstanding guard play of
the Tigers. Lamar Nicholas
and Nehemiah Simpkins would
dominate the guards on the
Rams by controlling the tempo
and making sure there was a
good balance of inside scoring
and attacking the rim when
necessary.
The Rams woes of outside
shooting has continued, the
Rams finished the game with a
33 percent field goal percentage
and only 20 percent from 3 point
range. Ronzelle Fort finished
the game with 12 points, but was
only 4-11 for the field. The Tigers would execute great clock
management and made key baskets down the stretch to maintain their lead. The Tigers bench
was the difference in this game
outscoring the Rams 21-9.
Huston-Tillotson will play
in the second game of the double
header against SW Assemblies
of God University Saturday December 10 at 7:30 in the HustonTillotson’s gym. The Rams are
still winless on the year 0-6 and
0-4 in the RRAC. Paul Quinn
improves to 2-5 and 1-2 in the
RRAC.
Houston holds on against Atlanta
Andre Johnson (80) catches a pass over Dominique Franks.
Johnson Catch Courtesy of Houston Texans
For the first time all year
the crowd at Reliant Stadium
was a factor in forcing multiple
false starts by the Falcons. The
crowd atmosphere was close to
a college game from the very beginning. In the fourth quarter
Jacoby Jones and other teammates were waving towels encouraging the crowd to make
even more noise. The Texans
would hold on to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 17-10.
The Falcons did not go
down without a fight. Falcons
QB Matt Ryan had two intercep-
tions in the first quarter, but that
did not discourage him. According to linebacker DeMeco
Ryans, “Knew that the two interceptions were big for the
team, but it would not demoralized them because they are a
veteran team”. On the last play
of the game, Julio Jones drop a
hail mary pass from Ryan in the
left corner of the end zone that
could have tied the game.
Texans QB TJ Yates staring in his first professional
game came out a little nervous,
but after he got rid of the but-
terflies he settled into his own.
With the start Yates became the
first QB from the University of
North Carolina to start a game.
Yates would finish the game
with 188 passing yards and one
touchdown. Yates was benefited
by two penalties on the Falcons
that negated an interception that
was run back for a touchdown
because of defensive holding.
As a result, of that defensive
holding the Texans would maintain control of the ball and Arian
Foster would score on a rushing
touchdown.
Foster would finish the
day with 111 yards. With the
rushing touchdown, Foster has
scored in six consecutive games.
That is ties a Texans’ team
record. The news was not all
good on the day for the Texans
both wide receiver Andre
Johnson and punter Brett
Hartmann were injured despite
not being touched by a defensive
player. Their status will be
evaluated to the extent of their
severity.
The Texans 9-3 and on a six
game winning streak travel to play
the Cincinnati Bengals 7-5 and are
heading in the wrong direction for
a playoff spot. The Texans could
clinch a playoff spot and Division
title if they win the Titans lose to
the New Orleans Saints.
The National Basketball Association and their
player union finally reached
a handshake agreement in
principal on a new Collective
Bargaining Agreement. As a
result, some future player’s
dreams will be coming true.
That is the case the for
former Texas Longhorn
standout Tristan Thompson.
Thompson was selected with
the four overall pick in this
year ’s NBA Draft by the
Cleveland Cavaliers. Although only playing one season with Texas, Thompson
was the third highest Longhorn ever drafted by the
NBA. Tristan was born in
Brampton, Ontario in Canada
and played high school basketball at Saint Benedict’s
Preparatory School in Newark, NJ. Thompson chose to
go to school in Newark, because he wanted to play with
better completion and get additional exposure as a player.
During his senior year
at Saint Benedict Thompson
got into a heated argument
with his coach and left the
team and transferred to
Findlay Prep. At Findlay
Prep Thompson would join
Tristan Thompson
his former AAU and future
Texas teammate Cory Joseph.
In 2009 Thompson became only
the third Canadian basketball
player to be named to the
McDonalds All-American team.
At Texas Thompson led
the team in rebounding with
7.8 rebounds per game and
with 86 blocked shots and he
had a scoring average of 13
points per game. “We’re very
excited for Tristan and his
family,” Texas coach Rick
Barnes said. “I’m not sure
we’ve seen a player improve
so quickly once he came to
campus last June. I often tell
people jokingly that Tristan
improved too much, as our
staff would have loved the
opportunity to coach Tristan
for several more years. The
exciting thing is Tristan is
truly just getting started in his
development. Tristan is a
wonderful person and Cleveland is getting a special individual who will work hard
every day, both on the court
and in the community.”
Although the CBA with
the NBA has not been finalized it appears that the rookie
scale will be similar to the one
in the previous agreement,
which means once it is approved Thompson will
quickly sign in first professional contract with the Cavaliers. Thompson said, “It is
definitely exciting with Coach
(Byron) Scott and the coaching staff and young team rebuilding. They want to win
and I am a winner and I want
to come in and contribute”.
The Longhorns Basketball wins a pair

2 defeated the North Texas
percentage for the game
Mean Green 1-4 at the Erwin
Center 73-57 and the UCLA
Bruins in Los Angeles 69-59.
Against the Mean Green the
Longhorns got off to a better
start unlike the game against
Sam Houston State. The UCLA
game showed that the defensive
pressure and hot shooting
would contain the Bruins.
Against the Mean Green,
the Longhorns were led in scoring by three freshmen, Jonathan
Holmes with 12 points, Myck
Kabongo with 16 points and
Julien Lewis with 11 points. At
one point in the game the Longhorns had four freshmen on the
court at the same time. The
Mean Green did a great defensive job on junior guard
J’Covan Brown. Brown had
his worst offensive production
on the young season finishing
with only 6 points.
Alzee Williams was assigned to contain Brown on the
night and took pride in doing
that job with great success. The
Mean Green were out rebounded the Longhorns 46-30,
despite being about the same
size. The Mean Green were led
in scoring by Williams who finished with 17 points and Roger
Franklin a 6’5" guard finished
with a game high 12 rebounds.
Franklin would also have 13
points to finish with a double.
In the UCLA game,
Brown broke out of his two
game scoring slumps to lead all
scorers with 22 points in 38 minutes of play. This was the first
time this season where the
Longhorns won the battle of the
rebounding against a similar
opponent. The Longhorns shot
and an astonishing 70 percent in
the second half. The Longhorns
outscored the Bruins 41-25 in
the second half.
Longhorns’ Head Coach
Rick Barnes knows that in order for his team to get better they
must improve on their offensive
spacing and defensively. According to Barnes, “You can’t be
a great defensive team, one if
you don’t get back and two if
you don’t finish it with a rebound. Until you get better a
defensive unit the longer you
will be playing defense.” Some
more reason Barnes feels his has
to improve upon finishing, stop
being mentally fatigue and once
we got a big lead teammates
stop helping on defense.
The Longhorns will host
Texas State at the Erwin Center
Saturday December 10 at 7:00.

Outdoor Museum on Comal and E. 12th
Story by I. Enterprises
The Southgate Lewis
house is the site of a continued
development and an experimental historic exhibition project
sponsored by the Passon Historical Society, (President Mr.
Bertram Allen) and Wax Track
Gallery International, a 501 C-3
organization sponsored in part by
the City of Austin Cultural Contract Department, a part of Economic Development.
Wax Track has been developing, maintaining, and adding
inside exhibitions for several
years. After loosing the on-site
hostess of the museum, the organization had the idea that the outside should be developed into
exhibitionswhich visitors could
see whether the museum was
open, or not.
The Gallery also wanted to
attempt to do this project as a
model for small towns who do not
havethe funds to maintain a museum building, but may have a
small town park. A town or organization could place historical
items in the park which are durable and could withstand the
weather. Items would have the
proper labeling so that visitors
who pass through at any time
would be actually visiting an outdoor museum.
The outdoor museum
would be naturally maintained by
the same people who do the lawn
maintenance, and someone who
could come from time to time and
make sure the items are cleared
of bird poop and properly sealed
with a chemical sealer.
Over the past years the
Gallery has created important figures which include Mahalia
Murchison, (Sculpted by
Adrienne Isom). Ms. Isom is a
veteran sculptress whose popularity throughout the country has
been rapidly growing. She is most
known for her creations of life
size, and over life size statues in
Allen.

bronze, synthetic bronze, wax,
and other durable medium.
Other exhibitions seen
in the outdoor museum are a Caribbean festival sculpture, created
by the Internationally known
popular Designer / Artist, Bryan
“ByDEE Man” Joseph. Joseph
took an artistic picture he would
usually place on canvas and
painted the picture on a cast
stone Wax Track prepared in the
shape of a tin plate of his painting.
Another featured work
in the outdoor museum is a
maquette from Mr. Eddie Dixon
on Lubbock. Mr. Dixon is one of
the most prestigious African
American Sculptors of our century, and known throughout the
world. A figure bust of George
Washington Carver on the outdoor site is done by Mr. Bertram
Besides being President of
the Passon Society, Bertram Allen
is one of few Griots left in the
City who you can go to at any
time and get a running accurate
history of just about any African
American event that ever occurred in Austin. He is an irreplaceable wealth of knowledge.
This year additions which were
held back, and new additions will
emerge.
Some of the additions will
include a statuette of Doris Miller,
original model from Eddie Dixon
who will be building the giant
monument in Waco, Texas.
A bust of Everette Givens,
historical black businessman and
dentist, and others to be announced.
The Southgate Lewis
House is one of the most historical and stately homes in East
Austin. Although the structure is
a beautiful two story Victorian
style home, standing next to plain
residential structures. If you ask
the average person they will say,
“What home,,,,where?” This is
said by people who walk by the
home everyday!” The structure
virtually goes unnoticed like a
ghost house which disappears
from time to time.
Future plans are to light
up the outdoor museum site to
give the structure more visibility,
and also to offer musicians a site
to do local tasteful performances.
