passed away unexpectedly on January
9th. Dianne and her husband, Jack,
have been members of our club for several years.
Dianne was a sweet lady with a very fun sense of
humor. She was a member of the gold prospector’s
club as well, and often spoke of their prospecting
adventures.
Dianne is survived by her husband and children.
There will be a Memorial Service and Potluck for
Dianne on Saturday, February 6th at 1:00 PM. This
will be held at the Crosby Chapel, 16404 NW Church

More Comfortable Cab Cutting
Is the edge of your cab machine water
trough sharp? When you’re cutting a cab,
does the edge dig into your wrist or arm?
Here’s an easy and inexpensive solution
to end your discomfort. Get a piece of
foam pipe insulation from the hardware
store and place a piece of it over the
edge of the trough. Voila, no more discomfort! And, you can easily remove the
foam when you go to empty or clean the
trough.

to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Due to reconstruction of the Big Beef Bridge in
Central Kitsap, it is recommended that the best
route to take will be Holly Rd. to Seabeck Highway.
KMGS is missing you, Dianne!

hardness of stone. The pencil leaves fainter marks on
harder stones. A stone harder than 7 will not allow

Rock Talk Report:
Several Kitsap Mineral and Gem members, Jack Eads,
Jan King, Ruth Brooks Butler and (observing) Tom
Lucas helped to present to the 7th grade
science classes a bird’s eye view of the “Three
Classifications of Rocks” on December 9th and 10th,
2009. Six classes of forty minutes went by quickly
and the information they received was appreciated.
The questions from the 7th graders were
challenging. Just a reminder, we can use tumbled
rocks to give out at our Rock Talks.

Port Townsend Club Workshop News:
Our sister club in Port Townsend provides some wonderful
opportunities for their members. (Many KMGS members
are also members of the Port Townsend club and vice
versa.) Workshop plans are as follows:
The work room will open weekly on Tuesday nights
starting February 2, 2010. They also have monthly
Saturday workshops, starting February 6, 2010.
There was a decision made at their January meeting that
participants must be at least thirteen years old to attend
the workshops and that on-site training is required for
EVERYONE using the machines at the workshops.
Marie Anderson will demonstrate how to make doublet
and triplet cabochons on February 2nd and 6th. Also note
that these are "open workshops" not "classes".
For more information, please contact Marie Anderson

Birthstone Color: Purple
If gazing into the sparkling purple depths of an
Amethyst suffuses you with a sense of
powerful well being, this is only to be
expected. The ancient Greeks believed
that this gemstone held many powers,
among them protection against
intoxication. In fact, the word Amethyst comes
from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning
sober. In ancient Greece, the gemstone was
associated with the god of wine, and it was
practice to serve this beverage from Amethyst

overindulgence. Even today, Amethyst is
considered a stabilizing force for those struggling to
overcome addictive behaviors.

among the closely guarded gemstones in the British
Crown Jewels.
Amethyst is also symbolic of spirituality and piety.
It has been used to ornament churches and crosses
used in religious ceremony, and worn in rings and
on rosaries by bishops and priests.
Once considered more valuable than diamonds,
Amethyst is a member of the quartz family,
occurring naturally as crystals within rocks.
Deposits of this gemstone are found in Brazil,
Canada, Australia, India, Madagascar, Namibia,
Russia, Sri Lanka; and in the United States.
