Hundreds of Dealers & Thousands of Shoppers Meet at
Minnesota’s 23rd Annual Cambridge Antique Fair
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
The Isanti County Fairgrounds in Cambridge, Minnesota once again played host
to the Cambridge Antique Fair, now in its twenty-third season. It may not be the largest
Gopher State antiques event around, but it’s still plenty big, attracting hundreds of
quality dealers to the once-a-year event, many that you won’t find anywhere else. The
show, held on August 2nd & 3rd, has a festive atmosphere, with many carnival-style
food vendors set up alongside the dealers. Fair skies prevailed for the two-day event,
resulting in good crowds from start to finish.

Out & About
The signs now tell us that fall has officially arrived.
With the cooler weather and the changing of the leaves.
There is not much time left to finish those fall chores
before the snow arrives. Some of us have already noticed
the change in our daylight time shortening. For those of
you who have been closing up camps and preparing your
boats for winter storage and have missed your weekend fixes of antiquing,
don’t fret there are still many more auctions and shows in the upcoming weeks.
Also, many more great finds and bargins from what our subscribers are telling us.
Tia has been painting her bed that she made in woodshop, it is looking pretty
good. Kenzy has been working at the two hockey rinks in the consession stand.
She has also had weekly hockey practice along with daily workouts to get
prepared for the hockey season. Brandon has been in conditioning for two
weeks to get prepared for tryouts. He is excited and nervous at the same time
as he is on a checking leaque this year. So this should be an exciting year!
When Out and About this weekend,
be sure to check out:

Isanti County Fairgrounds Hosts 23rd Annual
Cambridge, Minnesota Antique Fair
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
I’d guess that nearly every antiques enthusiast in Minnesota and beyond is familiar with its venerable summer antiques shows - Gold Rush Days, The Minnesota
Antique Spectacular, and the like. But there’s another Gopher State antiques tradition that’s been around nearly as long: the Cambridge Antique Fair, held just north
of the Twin Cities in little Cambridge, Minnesota. From humble beginnings, the
show has grown to attract hundreds of dealers and thousands of shoppers at each
two-day annual event, always held on the first weekend of August.
The show was founded two decades ago by local antiquers Shawn & Cheryl Hewitt,
and has matured into a major regional antiques event in the subsequent twenty-plus
years. When the Hewitts retired a several years ago, they passed the reigns of the
event to an equally experienced pair of antiques show promoters: Kermit & Jeanie
Wellman. The Wellmans, who have been antiques dealers for twenty-five years, are
able successors to Shawn & Cheryl Hewitt, as they’ve also promoted the nearby
Anoka Antiques Show for nearly as long.
“2014 turned out to be another successful year for the show,” Jeanie told me. “It’s
helped that we’d been dealers here since soon after the founding of the show. The
indoor booths filled quickly, and included quite a few new vendors. The weather
cooperated for the most part, and we had a nice crowd on both days.” The Isanti
County Fairgrounds, a little more than thirty minutes of the Twin Cities, has been the
show’s home for its two-decade history. Parking is free, and admission only $6.
It was a packed house in the vast
display of The BIG White House,

You’ll even find a discount admission coupon at their website
www.metropromos.com.
Many of the dealers have been returning since that very first show. Among them:
area antique enthusiasts Cliff & Sherry Thornberg. You’ll find them set up just inside
the main entrance, their booth filled with vintage toys, advertising, and more.
They’re inveterate marble collectors too; just ask to see the large selection they bring
to each show.
And shoppers found exceptional period furniture all over the show. New To You
Antiques always has a large furniture display, this time including everything from an
antique Brunswick-Balke-Callender billiard cue rack to an inlaid Italian gaming
table with hidden roulette wheel. Jeff & Sue Pankratz had an eclectic furniture mix
too, my favorite a 36” pine trunk that opened into a four-drawer carpenter’s chest.
Sporting memorabilia more your thing? Look no further than the booth of Decoy
Ducks-N-Antique Stuff, whose display was stuffed with period decoys, shell boxes
and the like; or Kitchen Antiques’ great selection of vintage baseball and football
collectibles.
It’s unique finds like these that have kept shoppers coming back to the Cambridge
Antique Fair for more than twenty years. For more information about the show, and
about the June Anoka Antique Show, give the Wellmans a call at 612-558-8097, or
visit their website www.metropromos.com. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of next year’s Cambridge Antique Fair in the Auction Action Antique News!

Society for Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains
The Society for Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains is an organization of collectors and
dealers who admire and collect Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains. The purpose of the
Society is for the members to share information and educate themselves and the
public about the history and beauty of these porcelains, promote the collecting of
Old Ivory and Hermann Ohme porcelains, and to develop communications between
those who collect these porcelain items.
The SOIOP website is clean looking and traditional looking in keeping with the
character of the collecting area the Society represents. The homepage has representative photos of Old Ivory and Ohme porcelain pieces plus a side navigation bar.
There is a section on the history of Old Ivory and Ohme porcelains and some excellent segments with photos covering the types of porcelain, patterns and marks.
The site's sections on the Society, itself, and on their annual convention is almost
secondary. This is an excellent reference site for both collectors and dealers, or for
that person who just happens to own a piece of Old Ivory or Ohme porcelain and
wants to know a little more about it.

From the leading authority in antiques guides
comes MILLER'S ANTIQUE MARKS
(Miller's, November 2013, paperback, $9.99) a complete guide to identifying antique marks.
Whether you are buying at auction, flea market

Marks are on the collector's most important tools
when it comes to identifying and dating antiques,
and this handy edition contains a carefully chosen
selection of the most common marks collectors

the factory or designer that used it, their location
and the dates of operations plus additional information where available. And each section opens
with a bit of history on that particular category's
marks, helpful hints on where to find the mark,
and clues to dating.

Antique Vintage Handkerchiefs
Fun To Collect And Use
By Shelby Weister, Four Seasons Antique Mall
Handkerchiefs have been around for centuries, but in the 1920’s, Kleenex tissues
began to take their place. A hanky became an inexpensive accessory for an outfit
and the perfect “Christmas gift for a friend or relative because you didn’t need to
know the size to purchase. Also they were a special gift easy to enclose in a card
and mail.
Today, many ladies carry or tie them on their purses or put them in the cuff of a
blouse so they are handy when needed. The distinguishing features of handkerchiefs
are patterns and designs. They come in many styles, colors and shapes. Many animals, such as dogs, appear o handkerchiefs, while floral ones are plentiful.
Children’s hankies depict cartoon characters or nursery rhymes. In the 1930’s,
many children went to school with a handkerchief pinned to their clothing.
There are designer handkerchiefs, and some are signed like works of art. Though
they were mass produced, you’ll be able to recognize the style of a particular artist
even if the handkerchief isn’t signed.
History and patriotism is a way of learning of a handkerchief’s age or time span.
the red, white and blue hankies represent the armed forces and instill patriotism in
the wearer. Many military personnel purchased hankies as gifts for loved ones.
“Remember Pearl Harbor” is one of the most poignant of all the hankies. After
World War II, gas rationing stopped and many people took to the road for vacations.
No item was a better souvenir than a handkerchief - inexpensive and small.
Most handkerchiefs are cotton or linen and most have hand-rolled edges. There
are also some that are silk.
To bring your handkerchiefs back to a nice condition, try to remove stains by soaking them in Oxy Clean or use cold water with hand soap. Always rinse thoroughly
and never squeeze or wring it dry. Lay the handkerchief flat on a towel to dry and
then iron it and store with acid free paper between each handkerchief.
Lace, crocheted and tatted handkerchiefs are very nice for special events, such as
confirmation or first communion. For a wedding, a handkerchief can meet the need
for something borrowed, blue, old or new.

Gun Collector’s Pack Kramer Auction Gallery for
Fantastic Summer Firearms Sale
Article & Photos by Kramer Auction Service
Next, a Smith & Wesson Model
76 9mm sub-gun followed closely
at $9,900. A little known 45ACP
Sub-gun mfg. by Phoenix
Cartridge Co. finished third. This
machinegun looked a little like a
cross between a German MP40 &
US grease gun. This was Serial #1
& functioned flawlessly running
to a final price of $6,325. A Reising Model 50 45 ACP, once popular w/ police agencies in the 1950’ & 60s ran strong at $6,100 followed by a remanufactured 30 cal M2
carbine at $5,500 & finally the STEN MKV rounding out at $5,225. Kramer’s will
have 3 additional full auto transferable sub-machineguns from the same collection
on their Oct. 18th auction later this year. So if you missed your chance at these make
sure to participate at the Fall Auction online at www.proxibid.com/kramer or call
(608) 326-8108 for more details.
Early Percussion Guns, a long ways from spectrum of machine guns, made a strong
showing as well, proving there are gun collectors for every aspect of the hobby. A
Fine Colt Civil War Production Model 1849 Pocket pistol commanded $2,115. A
Midwestern made Swivel Breech by J. Coleman of Freeport, ILL showed strong
local interest at $1,925. Another semi local percussion combo gun by E. Rodgers of
Dubuque Iowa stayed strong at $1,375. A fine example of Colts 1855 Root Revolver
snapped to $1,650 & a Rev. War Styled Flintlock Musket sparked to $1,265. An
Early & Scarce Evans Repeating Rifle loaded up at $1,425 with a good Winchester
1892 Lever action demanding the same.
Phoenix Cartridge
Co. 45ACP Sub Gun,
$6,325,
Other sporting Guns, Military weapons & Winchester hardware store items also
made a strong showing & remained in demand by in-house & online bidders
throughout the day. “See Pictures of items for results.”
Kramer’s Fall Firearms auction scheduled for Sat. Oct. 18th will feature a great collection of early Winchester’s along with early arms from the Menke Est. Collection.
Highlights of this auction will include a rare Winchester 1873 22 cal Takedown rifle
in fine condition, a truly exceptional standard Model 1876 Rifle; Model 1866 &
1873 Saddle Ring Carbines; Rare 22 models from Thumb triggers; Model 61
Smoothbore to scare Winchester scoped 22 models, plus lots of great Winchester
hardware store items, and collectible ammo. Then a fine early collection of Military
Rifles & pistols (Mausers & Lugers) for military enthusiasts, and 3 Transferable
Machineguns. Also an estate collection of NIB Colt & Winchester Commemorative
weapons. This will be a Great 400+ Gun Auction with nice desirable models, calibers & configurations all day long.

"Pioneer Spirit" Fox Valley
Antiques Show & Sale
Article & Photos by Debbie McArdle
(Chicago Suburban Antiques Dealers Association)
Pioneer spirit is alive and well in St.
Charles, Illinois. Traveling from 15 states in
“modern wagons”, 55 experienced antiques
dealers will sell their wares at the 40th Fall
Fox Valley Antiques Show. Their offerings
will include a wide variety of authentic 18th,
19th and early 20th century antiques and art,
presenting fresh ideas in decorating; something
different with little influence from mainstream
magazines and catalogs.
One modern-day pioneer new to the show
is Gloria Oviatt traveling from Ann Arbor, Michigan who and has been exhibiting at antiques
shows since 1978. Gloria carries early country Americana furniture and related smalls
including some folk art. An early step-back cupboard in mustard grain paint and a New
England meeting bench are just two of the very special pieces she has been saving for the Fox
Valley Antiques Show. Gloria will be in Booth #49, anxious to meet all that come to the event.
Marti and Mike Korba of The Old Shed, Russiaville, Indiana are also new exhibitors
at the show. They specialize in 18th and 19th century original-surface furniture and accessories. A
pair of wooden 17th century Spanish candle sticks in untouched, as-found condition and a circa 1820s
original-red jelly cupboard head their lineup.
“Pioneer Spirit” is the theme chosen for the 40th Annual Event, in conjunction with the ongoing 175th anniversary celebration of the founding of DuPage County, Illinois. The antiques show's
popular atrium display will feature two contrasting antique settings, one formal and one country, both
reflecting lifestyles of earlier times.
Another unique first-time feature of the show will debut on Sunday morning. The first 75
Sunday-paid admissions will receive a free breakfast voucher good 10 a.m. until noon, sponsored by
Inglenook Pantry.
Those arriving after the free 75 breakfasts on Sunday morning can partake of Inglenook Pantry's
excellent lunch offerings. Comfortable seating is available and there is plenty of free parking. Show
hours are Saturday, October 18, 10 - 5, and Sunday, October 19, 10 - 4, at the Kane County Fairgrounds,
525 South Randall Road, St. Charles, Illinois 60174 (enter on Randall Road between Routes 38 and 64).
Produced by the Chicago Suburban Antiques Dealers Association, the show celebrates our heritage by collaborating with its sponsor, the DuPage County Historical Museum. Both not-for-profit organizations,
admission of $8 benefits local historical and educational endeavors. Discount coupons are available on the CSADA
website. For further information visit http://www.csada.com/ ATM on premises.
