Midleton has specs appeal
Specsavers Midleton search
for budding models
The search for specs wearing style
setters is well underway as
Specsavers Midleton launched
their campaign to discover
Midleton's hidden modelling talent
for Specsavers Irish Spectacle
Wearer of the Year competition
2012.
Specsavers staff were on the lookout for guys and girls with specs
appeal who wore their glasses with
style. Following a fashionable
model scouting day in store last
Saturday,
28 April
2012,
Specsavers Midleton saw plenty of
talent with the potential to be
crowned this year's Specsavers
Irish Spectacle Wearer of the year.
It was a fun filled fashion frenzy in
store as Specsavers Midleton
frame stylists helped the potential
candidates to pick out the perfect
pair of frames, whilst make-up
artist Ger from the Clarins counter
in Sam McCauley's, Market Green,
provided mini make-overs to complement their frames to ensure they
were picture perfect for their entry
photo.
Marie Roche, store director at
Specsavers in Midleton says: 'We
had great fun at our model scouting
day in store and saw some amazing
talent. So many people in Midleton
look absolutely stunning in their
glasses and it would be fantastic to
have a guy or girl from Midleton in
the Irish final.'
This year the overall Irish winner
will receive one year's representation with Assets Model Agency, a
€215 Specsavers eyecare voucher,
the prestigious Irish Spectacle
Wearer of the Year 2012 trophy
and plenty more. The winner will
also go forward to represent
Ireland at the Spectacle Wearer of
the Year Grand Final, in London,
this autumn.
Specsavers Midleton also celebrated the store's third birthday as customers were invited to join in the
festivities as Specsavers staff blew
out the candles and cut the birthday
cake. Store owners Marie Roche
and Deirdre Franklin invited customers to join in the celebrations in
store to thank them for the great
support they have experienced
from the community over the last
three years.
Store director Deirdre Franklin
says, "We had a great time celebrating our store's third birthday
and would like to thank everyone
in Midleton for their continued
support since we opened our doors
in 2009. We very much enjoy being
a part of the Midleton community
and are looking forward to many
more years."
Specsavers Midleton in the Market
Green Shopping Centre will be
continuing their search for specs
wearing guys and girls all summer
so if you think you have the potential to be Spectacle Wearer of the
Year 2012 drop into Specsavers
Midleton to fill out an entry form.
You can also enter by logging on to
www.specsavers.ie
or
visit
Specsavers on Facebook at
www.facebook.com/specsaversireland. The competition is open to
those who not only wear glasses as
an optical necessity, but also as a
fashion accessory.

One hundred years ago
The weekend of the 25th / 26th of
May 1912 was to be special for the
people of Mogeely. The old church
in the cemetery which had served
the people of the area for so long
was at last to be replaced by the
new Sacred Heart Church. On
Saturday 25th the Church was
solemnly consecrated by Bishop
Robert Browne of Cloyne diocese,
assisted by Bishop Cotter of
Portsmouth who was a native of
Cloyne parish.
On the morning of the 26th there
was indeed a great buzz about the
place - special trains brought people from far afield to be present for
the first mass in the new church. A
band from Midleton led the procession to the new limestone building;
everybody was in their best bib and
tucker. A photograph taken from
the organ loft shows the wide
brimmed hats of the ladies, the
Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of
Cork were present as were the
builder, the architect and a large
concourse of people.
The best of materials were used in
its construction - the beautiful marble altar, communion rails and pillars, the pitch pine of the seats and
the ceiling, the brass sanctuary gate
etc. The total cost, fully furnished
was £8,100 and was debt free on
the day of it's opening, hence the
consecration. This surely reflects
the generosity of parishioners, the
hard work of the committee and the
leadership of Fr. Philip Murphy
and his predecessor Fr. Michael
Ahern who had got the site, fenced
it in and raised much of the
finance.
The centenary will be marked by a
special mass at 6pm on Saturday
26th of May celebrated by
Archbishop Dermot Clifford
Archbishop of Cashel and Emily
and current Apostolic administrator of Cloyne diocese. An informal
social will follow with finger food.
It is hoped that it will indeed be a
memorable occasion. All are welcome.
National Volunteer Week
14th -20th May 2012
As part of National Volunteer
Week (14th-20th May) Cork
Volunteer Centre and Midleton
Community Hospital are inviting
volunteers to help with the gardens
surrounding the hospital on Friday
18th May 2012 - 10a.m.-2p.m.
Volunteers will be preparing window boxes, planting flowers,
weeding and maintaining the garden for residents of the hospital.
So bring your gardening gloves
and let's have some fun while
doing something very worthwhile
for the Midleton Hospital community.
Research carried out by Volunteer
Ireland in advance of National
Volunteering Week (NVW) has
found that being involved in volunteering makes people happier.
Among the Munster volunteers
surveyed 98% responded that 'vol-
unteering makes them a happier
person', which was similar to the
nationwide response of 98%. So
just come along on the day to the
hospital or contact Cork Volunteer

MIDLETON TOWN COUNCIL MEETING
Held on Tuesday May 8th, 2012
By John Walshe
The monthly meeting of Midleton Town Council took place on Tuesday
May 8th. It was chaired by the Mayor, Cllr Mary Woods (FG), and in
attendance were Joe McCarthy, Town Clerk; James Fogarty, Town
Manager; Dave Clarke, Town Engineer; along with Councillors Noel
Collins (Ind), Betty Wall (Ind), Niall O'Neill (FF), Tom Cashman (Lab),
Ted Murphy (Ind), Margaret Trundle (FG), Pat Buckley (SF).
Annual General Meeting; The date of the Annual General Meeting was
fixed for Tuesday June 26th and it was agreed to have it at the earlier time
of 7pm, the usual monthly meeting takes place on Tuesday June 12th at
7.30pm.
Motions
Motion in the name of Cllr Tom Cashman: "That our engineer as
requested by the residents in my area (Brookedale) to check the urgent
need for road safety markings to prevent the reoccurrence of recent
road traffic accidents."
Cllr Cashman referred to a bad road accident recently at the entrance to
Broomfield Village. He said he had been told that road markings are
needed here, especially as it is a junction where children congregate in the
mornings to get the bus to school.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Trundle and Cllr Collins also said there
was "an urgent need" for road markings in the specific area mentioned.
"Some of these estates have yet to be taken in charge by the County
Council when hopefully all these problems will be attended to, but when
they'll be taken in charge is the six-marker," added Cllr Collins.
Cllr Pat Buckley also spoke in favour of the motion, as did Cllr Wall and
the Mayor, Cllr Woods, who stated as it was a County Council area it
should be left with the Engineer to deal with.
Motion in the name of Cllr Noel Collins: "That Council report on the
number of landlords who have registered for private rented accommodation with the PRTB for the Midleton region and what penalties apply
in the event of non-compliance with registration conditions."
Cllr Collins said he had people contacting him on a regular basis expressing their unpleasant experiences in their private rented accommodation.
"Many complain about sing-songs and binge parties into the early hours
of the morning. I am not a kill-joy but this is frightening for all, especially senior citizens living alone. Other complaints refer to the long delays
in having house repairs carried out. Many of these rented apartments and
houses are occupied by individuals in receipt of State rent supplements the most vulnerable and isolated tenants - who are in need of special protection from greedy and uncaring landlords. The State is paying more
than €500 million a year in rent supplement to needy tenants and in many
cases that money is being spent on substandard accommodation. Reform
is urgently needed," he said.
Cllr Wall seconded the motion, although she said she didn't know the
answer to the parties, etc going on.
Cllr O'Neill strongly opposed the motion, saying that the NPPR (NonPrincipal Private Residence) charge is just another form of tax. As a landlord himself, he said there was a misnomer out there that landlords are
"akin to the old British landlords." He stated that the landlords who pay
into this PRTB fund are basically paying a levy to support more civil servants "who do nothing", adding that it was "an appalling branch of the
civil service." Cllr Woods said there were "bad and good landlords, it's a
mixed bag." The Town Clerk explained the various charges associated
with the PRTB but said that it had nothing to do with Midleton Town
Council as it was actually Cork County Council who carried out inspections in the towns and well as the county.
Cllr Collins, clearly not happy with the outcome of his motion, said that
the numbers of people (775) on rent allowances was "a slur on us and
nobody cares."
Motion in the name of Cllr Noel Collins:
"That the Council consider the appointment of a Road Safety Officer."
Cllr Collins said recently, when submitting documentation to the
Ombudsman on road safety issues, he was requested to forward a report
from the Council's Road Safety Officer. "When I made enquiries at
County Hall, I was told that the Council doesn't have a Road Safety
Officer. In the interest of road safety and the protection of human life, I
would put the proposal to this Council, taking into consideration that we
have eight schools in the town (with no school traffic wardens) coupled
with the density of heavy traffic that it should deem this Council eligible
for the appointment of a Road Safety Officer."
Although Cllr Woods seconded the motion, there wasn't much support
forthcoming. "We have a small Town Council here, how can we hope to
get a Road Safety Officer?" asked Cllr Murphy. Cllr Trundle also said she
didn't see a need for a Road Safety Officer in the Midleton Town Council
area and the Town Clerk concluded the debate by stating that they could
not appoint such a person but that he would write to Cork County Council
expressing a desire to have a Road Safety Officer appointed for the county.
Information; In reply to Cllr Collins as to when development would
commence on the old Fire Station, the Town Clerk said no contract had
yet been signed but he expected this to happen fairly soon. As to when
development would commence, once the contract was signed it would be
up to the various bodies such CEDAD and Jigsaw to carry out the work
and that the Town Council would facilitate them in every way.
Other business; The Mayor, Cllr Woods, stated she had received representations in relation to the matter of the Christmas Lights in Midleton: "I
wish to clearly state that neither Midleton Town Council or any member
of Midleton Town Council ever suggested or implied that any impropriety arose in relation to the grants made by the Council in support of the
Christmas Lights. Midleton Town Council expresses itself satisfied that
the grants were used to make repayment on a loan which was drawn down
for the Christmas Lights and for the promotion of Midleton."
Best wishes; The meeting concluded with best wishes being expressed to
the Town Manager, James Fogarty, who is leaving to take up a promotion
as Divisional Manager for West Cork and Housing Manager for Cork
County. The Mayor, Cllr Woods, spoke for the members when she said
that they were very sorry to lose the manager, just as they were getting to
know him well: "You were most accommodating and courteous to all
members but you are going on a promotion and we wish you well in your
new role," she said.
Whitegate to be spun out as
ConocoPhillips breaks up
CONOCOPHILLIPS, THE thirdbiggest integrated US oil company, is going to hive off its refining
assets - including Whitegate
Refinery - to focus exclusively on
exploration and production.
The split into two standalone, publicly
traded
corporations,
announced recently, will be effected through a tax-free spin-off of
the refining and marketing business. ConocoPhillips plans to
complete the split in the first half
of 2012.
ConocoPhillips acquired the Irish
refinery in 2001 following its
acquisition of another US oil company, Tosco. Whitegate was originally owned by the Irish National
Petroleum, a State company. No
value has been put on it at this
stage, but according to the
ConocoPhillips website it can
process 75,000 tonnes of oil a day
and meet about 40 per cent of the
Republic's fuel needs. The most
recent
accounts
for
ConocoPhillips
Whitegate
Refinery Ltd filed in the companies officer are for 2009 and report
a loss of almost $12 million. It had
156 employees.
The ConocoPhillips decision follows one by Marathon Oil, which
split two weeks ago and has seen
its share price surge. It marks the
second attempt by Jim Mulva,
chief executive, to restructure the
company after the economic crisis
revealed in early 2009 flaws in the
acquisition spree he had been pur-
suing for years to put the company
in the big league. ConocoPhillips
is the smallest of the six majors.
Breaking the company up will
make it a "super-independent",
with what Barclays Capital estimates will be more than twice the
proved reserves of Occidental
Petroleum and Apache, its new
peers. Its refining operations will
be slightly smaller than Valero
Energy's, in terms of throughput
capacity, Barclays said, making it
the US's second-biggest independent refiner.
"The downstream business is really struggling as an industry and the
model is all about taking out costs
and finding efficiencies," said Jim
DeNaut, Nomura's head of investment banking for the Americas.
"That is very different from the . .
. growth that is going on in the
upstream part of the business."
Yet analysts say ConocoPhillips
will remain in a difficult position.
Until now, it has struggled to keep
up with the majors; now, it will
struggle to grow as fast as the
smaller refiners.
The formal separation of
ConocoPhillips is expected to take
place in the first half of next year,
after which Mr Mulva will retire.
Under the terms of the present
plan, no shareholder vote would be
needed for the division to go
ahead.

East Cork News & Views - Ramblings From The Region
Compiled by John Cashman
Lynda’s Coffee Morning In
Aghada To Aid Crumlin
Hospital
Crumlin’s Childrens Hospital has
touched the hearts of many people
in all corners of the country.
Aghada’s Linda Corigliano has
certainly played her part in recent
years in helping this worthy cause
by means of her annual fund raising coffee morning and cake sale.
This year it all happens at Aghada
Community Centre on Friday
morning week May 25th between
9am and 11am.
Lynda needs your help to make this
year’s fund raiser another very
beneficial event for Crumlin
Hopsital. You can bake or buy,
make a donation, sponsor a prize
for the raffle or just come along
and buy a ticket. Linda tells us that
all proceeds will go directly to St
John’s Cancer Ward at Crumlin
Hospital.
Incidentally there are some fantastic prizes to be won in the raffle
topped by 6 months membership
of the Leisure Club at The
Radisson Blu Hotel in Little
Island. A superb gigantic doll’s
house has also been made and
donated whilst numerous local
restaurants have come on board
with meal vouchers. All in all it
promises to be great morning in
Aghada Community Centre on
Friday week.
If you wish to sponsor a prize, buy
a ticket, bake a cake or just help on
the day give Lynda a call on 0872494186.
Best Of Luck Barney in Over
60’s
Our best wishes are extended to
popular Midletonian Barney
McCarthy who represents the
region in the final of Over 60’s
Talent Competition, which takes
place at the Opera House later this
month. Barney stepped into the
limelight when the local winner
John Buckley had unfortunately to
withdraw due to the death of his
brother in the days immediately
prior to the Cork semi final.
Whilst we extend our sincere sympathy to John we also send our best
wishes to Barney who no doubt
will fly the Midleton and East
Cork flag proudly. The big night
on Sunday week May 27th is now
coming ever closer, so it’s time to
be rallying around and getting the
supporters club up and running.
Tickets for the night can be purchased from Barney.
VOICE OF MIDLETON
Meantime, as the saying goes ‘for
one night only” the chase will be
on the Voice Of Midleton. This is
a competition hosted by O’Neill’s
Bar, Mill Road in aid of the Cork
Simon Community and will be
held on the Friday of the June
Bank Holiday Weekend, commencing at 8.30pm. Entry fee for
the night is just 5 euro. It’s great
opportunity to support a charity
which does so much work for the
less well off on the streets of Cork.
Call 4929410 or e mail
[email protected] for more
details.
Garden Fete
Last year a huge crowd enjoyed the
return of the Midleton Hospital
Garden Fete. Such were the positive vibes thereafter that there was
no doubt about the event taking
place again in 2012. Work has
already begun at various quarters
following a number of recent
meetings with the Sunday June
24th earmarked as the big day.
The packed programme will no
doubt be enjoyed by all who attend
and like last year, live music will
feature strongly, with several local
bands performing throughout the
course of the afternoon. The
Friends of Midleton Hospital are a
wonderful hard working committee who deserve the support of all
of us in their endeavours. So please
help out by coming along on the
day or assisting the committee in
their efforts beforehand.
Midleton Show
It would be remiss of me not to
give a final reminder of the
Midleton Agricultural Show which
is coming up a few weeks earlier
than the Garden Fete. Of course,
the Show is now just 10 days away
– Sunday week May 27th is the red
letter day for those who have planning their programme for many
months. Maura Keohane who
dropped into our new office at
Riversdale Shopping Centre on the
Mill Road tells me that all the
usual equine, cattle, sheep and
poultry classes will again feature
as will a large variety of trade
stands. There is also a new photography section this year whilst
apparently Nuala Stack has included some interesting classes especially for men in the cookery section. There is also a prize for the
most appropriately dressed person.
All of this plus much much more
for all the family, The show also
has a web site if you wish to delve
for further details or alternatively
Maura’s phone which is sure to be
busy this week is likely to be nearby – 087-6727730.
Incidentally all of this would not
be possible without the co operation of John Twomey and family
who host the event at The
Paddocks in Broomfield and also
neighbouring landowner Dick
Doocey.
Killeagh Community Care
Meeting
Since it’s formation by Canon
Hayes back in 1937, the Muintir na
Tire organisation has played a
huge role in the rural Ireland. The
formation of Community Alert
groups under the Muintir banner
has been a massive success in various parts of the country. Here in
East Cork there are a number of
Community Alert committees in
various parishes. Diarmuid Cronin
is the Regional Officer for the
organisation and he is lined up to
attend a special meeting hosted by
Killeagh/Inch Community Council
on Monday next May 21st, beginning at 8pm.
Diarmuid is a mind of information
and having visited my local group
in Ballintotis on a number of occasions, I can safely say that it’s well
worth a visit to listen to this
advice. At this time of year with
longer brighter evenings, sometimes it’s easy to neglect the more
traditional winter rituals.
Dermot’s philosophy is to keep a
watchful eye both internally and
externally throughout the year.
Safety begins in the home, heaters,
fires, electric appliances. Stay vigilant, liaise with the local gardai if
you see something suspicious in
your area.
Helen
Kennedy
from
the
Killeagh/Inch group tells me that
light refreshments will be served
following Monday’s meeting at the
Killeagh Community Hall. Everybody welcome.
Castlemartyr Hotel
It appears as if there no threats to
existing jobs at Castlemartyr Hotel
following the recent announcement that Dromoland Castle have
withdrawn from Castlemartyr following a three year stay.
Dromoland had come on board
after the initial management company Capella concluded it’s association back in 2008.
However, despite ties being cut
with Dromoland, the management
team at Castlemartyr say it’s business as usual with plenty of activity around the renowned East Cork
venue. Since first opening it’s
gates on the site of the old
Carmellite College, the hotel at
Castlemartyr has proved a major
hit with many visitors from various
parts of the country. Many locals
in the immediate region have also
taken the venue to their hearts, as
it’s magnificent grounds provide a
stunning walking location. The
golf course is also highly rated and
has a fantastic facility for lovers of
the game.
Castlemartyr Youth Club
Still in Castlmartyr, “well done” to
the members of the local Youth
Club who recently raised in excess
of 300 euro for the East Cork
Parents and Friends of the
Mentally Handicapped Summer

Ballynoe Man Denis Remembers
Golden Days
Ballynoe’s Denis O’Sullivan will
again recall golden days of Cork
hurling and camogie, when he
hosts his latest exhibition at
Bishopstown Library on Saturday
May 26th.
Denis got a great reaction to his
magnificent collection of memorabilia when it was on display at
Midleton
Library
before
Christmas.
Quite simply this
GAA fanatic from Ballynoe has
been gathering everything he can
relating to Cork hurling and camogie for the past 25 years. The result
is - a collection to behold, the envy
of many. Pride of place is his coveted Christy Ring section, featuring some never before published
images.
But it’s not just photos that make
the Dennis O’Sullivan collection
very special. There are also catalogued audio cassettes and dvd
footage featuring some of the great
names and great games through the
corridors of time.
The key to the collection is probably Denis’ attitude of chasing
images, recordings etc from all
corners of the land. His desire to
make it one of the biggest sporting
libraries in Ireland is relentless and
it compliments his widespread
knowledge of gaelic games which
has been built up over many years.
- A reminder that Denis will have
his collection on view between
10am and 5pm at Bishopstown
Library on Saturday week May
26th. A visit is must for any true
GAA fanatic.

Midleton A U14 End Season
With A Win Over Blarney Utd
U14 Division 4: Midleton A 3
Blarney United A 1
Midleton 'A' finished a tough season with a moral boosting win over
Blarney Utd A. With a strong
breeze blowing it was Midleton A
who were able to make the most of
the conditions and Barney A spent
most of the game defending
against a fast paced Midleton strike
force. With Blarney A having the
wind behind them in the first half it
was expected that Midleton A
would have a lot of defending to
do, but with a dominant back four
and good running on the wings
from Sean O’Meara and David
Jalill all the pressure was coming
from Midleton A.
As early as the 7th minute,
O’Meara won a throw on the right
wing and a quick throw found
Cameron Smyth who was excellent
throughout the match. Smyth made
a run to the heart of the defence
and passed through to Barry
Kenneally who placed the ball past
the keep into the bottom corner for
a deserved lead.
Midleton A continued to dominate
the game but were unable to
increase their lead. As the first half
came to a close Blarney Utd started to push forward and won a corner in the last minute. A good corner led to commotion in the
defence and the ball was tapped in
from six yards to make it 1-1 at
half time.
The second half was completely
dominated by Midleton A. With a
strong wind against them Blarney
Utd A were under a lot of pressure
and with the speed and strength of
Cameron Smyth up front the
chances were starting to pile up. It
was only a matter of time before
Smyth got the goal his hard work
deserved. On the 50th minute, a
good through ball found Smyth
one-on-one with the keeper and
after an initial save Smyth picked
up the rebound and slotted it home.
Midleton A pushed on from this
and the good work of Cathal
Gunning, Sean O’Meara and Barry
Kenneally in Midfield was ensuring that the chances continued to
come with both Conor Tynan and
Dylan Hallinan going close. The
third goal for Midleton A came on
the 68th minute when a poor kick
out was snapped up by Gunning
who hit it first time from 30 yards
into the top corner.
The game finished with Midleton
A enjoying the last few minutes of
the season playing some good football and no doubt looking forward
to the summer break. Well done
Lads!

Album Launch: Midleton Rare by John
Cronin and Daithí Kearney
Emerging from a quiet session,
this May sees the launch of an
exciting duet album from two
great friends in Wallis’ Bar,
Midleton on Tuesday 22nd May
at 9.30pm.
For the past few years, accordion
player John Cronin and banjo player Daithí Kearney have enjoyed
playing a regular session in Wallis’
Bar in Midleton, a town not usually celebrated for Irish traditional
music. John came to the town in
the 1970s and Daithí some 35
years later and both brought with
them a deep love of the music of
the Sliabh Luachra region on the
Cork and Kerry border.
This recording is a snap shot of
the session in Midleton but draws
heavily on the music of Sliabh
Luachra and particular accordion
players Johnny O’Leary, Denis
Doody, Jackie Daly and John
Brosnan. It also features music
sourced to John’s father DD, a fiddle player from Glenamuckla in
the parish of Newmarket, Co.
Cork.
John’s connections to Sliabh
Luachra are strong.
Pádraig
O’Keeffe used to come to the
house to teach his uncle John.
Later Denis Doody, Julia Clifford
and Con Curtain, as well as perhaps less well known visitors
including Billy Mahony and Dan
Fitz, would call in for tunes.
Daithí is lecturer in music at
Dundalk Institute of Technology.
He grew up performing as a musician, singer and dancer with
Siamsa Tíre and is a former member of the band Nuada, who were
nominated for an Irish Music
Magazine award in 2005. His PhD
focused on regional identities in
Irish traditional music and he has
published widely on various
aspects of the tradition.
On the album John and Daithí are
joined on some tracks by regular
guests at the session in Wallis’ Bar:
Barry Barrett , Mike Cummins,
Louise and Shane Keating, and
Imelda McCarthy. However, this
is essentially a duet album with a
diverse selection of tunes drawn
largely from the Sliabh Luachra
repertoire, the titles of which celebrate the people and places of the
region.
The album will be launched in
Wallis’ Bar by Christy Leahy,
accordion player with the band
North Cregg.

Wash & Wear Laundry and Dry Cleaners
Mill Road Midleton - Celebrates 21 Years In Business
With A 21% Reduction For All Customers From Now Until May 31st Tel 021-4631100
It was the year of 1991, talk
was already beginning of a new
millennium and what changes
the 'noughties' would bring us
both locally and nationally. In
Midleton's Mill Road, a new
business dawn was breaking as
Wash & Wear opened it's doors
for the first time. Locals
instantly realised that as the
name suggests they had a laundry service right on their
doorstep. Behind the counter
was Ann Lynch and daughter
Gail, hailing from a well
known business and sporting
family in the region.
Success can never be guaranteed in business but one felt in
this particular case that a winning formula was already in
place - and so it proved to be.
Twenty one years later, the
birthday candles are about to be
blown out. Wash & Wear with
Gail now at the helm celebrates
a significant land mark and the
good news is that customers are
in for a real treat. From now
until the end of the month there
is a massive 21% off of everything (pre payment only).
CHANGING TIMES
WASH & WEAR
AT
Wash 'N' Wear has developed
and changed in many ways
over two decades, the most significant alteration being that
now the proprietors offer customers a full dry cleaning service as well. It reflects the way
the business has evolved as
Ann and Gail drove it forward
to cater for a wider market, thus
increasing their customer base.
"At first back in 1991, we just
began on a relatively small
scale", comments Gail. My
father Dan was also very much
involved in the set up of the
business and was a great driving force in those early years. I
suppose looking back things
were quiet in business circles at
the time, but we gradually built
up our customer base and
expanded our services", she
reflects.
Wider Market
Initially that customer base
focused entirely on the domestic market, but the move into
sports clubs, the business sector, bed and breakfasts and
restaurants was a major step
forward for Wash & Wear. This
all happened in 1995 at a juncture when Gail recognised the
need to move into the dry
cleaning area. The move was a
resounding success and since
then the aforementioned have
become a big part of what is
now one of the most recognisable business outlets n the
northern part of Midleton town.
It's an area of the town which
has change dramatically over
the last few decades, a point
appreciated by Gail.
NEW LOOK TO MILL
ROAD PRESENTS NEW
CHALLENGES
"When we began there was just
a handful of people in business
in this part of the town. Things
were much quieter but then
there was gradual change both
in the commercial and residential sector. Houses and apartments began to appear including the Mill Brook unit just
across the road. We obviously
benefitted from this and reacted
accordingly".
Following Ann's retirement
from the business over 10 years
ago, Gail decided to revamp the
existing premises. Part of the
back of the premises was
knocked down and rebuilt
allowing greater space and thus
leading to the business making
a bigger move into the commercial market, where hotels
and bed and breakfast outlets
became key customers. What
this has meant is that there is
constant activity throughout the
calendar year. Generally the
most hectic period of the year is
from October to May.
However, afterwards with the
hotel/bed and breakfast business then at it's peak and the
increased amount of weddings
summer may also bring a sig-

it's peak and the increased
amount of weddings summer
may also bring a significant
boost.
FAMILY AFFAIR
It's very much a labour of love
for Gail, whose attention to
details ensures that each customer is treated with the utmost
attention. With Gail's husband
Paul also making an integral
contribution to the success of
the business and her sister Eve,
who now manages Wash 'N'
Wear, working alongside and
having done so since her
teenage years, there is a strong
family bond.
Another long
serving staff member is Claire
McGrath who joined the team
in her teenage years, whilst her
sister Danielle is also now
occasionally a familiar face.

Wash & Wear now offers the

Junior Hurling Challenge
Lisgoold 2-8 (14) Oliver
Plunketts 1-10 (13)n At Lisgoold
13th May 2012
Last Sunday on a windswept, dry
Sunday evening - Our junior
hurlers carved out a good win
against a very decent Oliver
Plunketts team. It was tough difficult conditions, but Mike Woods's
squad adapted and performed well
throughout the hour. As Lisgoold
battled the way through this tough
encounter, it was a tit for tat battle
for the majority of the game with
the goals the major point in the
match. John Cronin cracked in a
superb goal after some great teamwork in the first half. The second
half was a bit scattered as the wind
dictated the play. Alan Conroy led
the attack well while Andrew
Donovan was showing the way in
defence. Eoin and
Brian
O'Sullivan upped their game
throughout the second half as we
managed to come out on the right
side of a one point win. Mike
Woods had this to say "It's a very
satisfactory outing, we played
well, but there's a lot of work to be
done. However the young players
are performing well and when a
few of the more experienced players come back form injury and also
from exams, we need to up it a gear
or two for championship in June".
Junior Hurling Div 3 Lisgoold 08 (8) Sarsfields 4-12 (24) At
Lisgoold 11th May 2012
Last week on a dry Friday night - It
was back to the drawing board
after this heavy defeat to the men
from Riverstown. They dominated
from start to finish on a excellent
Lisgoold pitch. Lisgoold never got
going in this encounter as it was
just simply a mismatch from start
to finish. Dave Barry, Damien
Clifford, Bill Whelan and Denis
O'Brien did their upmost to try and
battle for a win against Sarsfields
but to avail. Sars were very comfortable throughout the hour, as
they put up the scores at their ease.
It was a relief when the final whistle blew, as this one-sided contest
was brought to an end. One can
only hope that our second string
will able to produce better performances in our next few league
games.
Junior Football Div 3 Lisgoold 14 (7) Carrignavar 0-5 (5) At
Carrignavar 1st May 2012
Last week on a wet, horrible,
Tuesday night - The old rear guard
came out with a heroic, backs to
the wall performance and pulled
off a unbelievable win. A game
which mirrored the recent champion's league semi-final between
Chelsea and Barcelona our lads
played like caged tigers as they
battled to a deserved two point
win. Inspired by superb defending
by Noel O'Riordan, Kevin Shea &
Seamus McSweeney, our defence
was fantastic for the hour, their
performance especially gave us the
platform to succeed. Mike
Mulcahy had a very productive
game by assisting with all our
scores. The pivotal moment, in this
contest came in the 13th Minute,
when Dave Barry played a one-two
with Mike Mulcahy to raise the
green flag. Carrig raised their
game and managed to leave the
half time score at 1-2 to 0-3.
In the second half, it was a display
of passion, determination and defiance that got us through. In a rare
attack, (in this half) Denis O'Brien
opened the scoring with a superb
point. Liam Mulcahy and Patrick
Connery also stepped it up as a
swarm of attacks came upon us as
they were camped in our half.
However, with great concentration,
fantastic organization and wonderful leadership we managed to wear
down our opponents. The fact the
wide count was 17 to 4 shows how
hard the team worked to grind out
a win, as they closed off the game
excellently. Carrig eventually got
the lead down to a point, but the
evergreen Finbarr Brosnan managed to chip over a score in the last
few minutes to seal a wonderful
win.
Manger Barry Ahern had this to
say "We (the club) were very down
after last Friday's championship
loss to Castlemartyr but this was
the tonic the club needed to lift our
spirits. It was a fantastic display by
our lads as we only had the bare 15
due to a couple of regulars with
work commitments and exams
coming up. I'm really proud of my
players and I'm just delighted to
put another two points on the
board." Team: Eoghan Heagrty,
Bill Whelan, Noel O'Riordan,
Damian Clifford, Kieran O'Shea,
Kevin
O'Shea,
Seamus
McSweeney, Patrick Connery,
Finbarr Brosnan, Denis O'Brien,
Dave Barry, John O'Shea, Mike
Mulcahy, Liam Mulcahy, Cian
Scannell. Scorers: Dave Barry 1-2,
Denis O'Brien, Finbarr Brosnan 01 each. Referee: Jim Hennessy
(Dungourney).
Junior Hurling Div 3 Lisgoold 09 (9) Cobh 2-14 (20) At Cobh
11th May 2012
Last Friday night - It was back to
the drawing board again after
another defeat this time to a very
youthful Cobh team. Playing a
very quick brand of hurling they
dominated from start to finish on a
very greasy Cobh pitch. Lisgoold
had started brightly as Dave Barry,
Andrew O'Donovan, Brendan
Flynn and Peter Leahy got going
from the first whistle. Peter Leahy
was first to chip a point over after
the Cobh lads hit three points, but
they soon took over, and put up a
few scores. Anthony McCarthy
they soon took over, and put up a
few scores. Anthony McCarthy
played well in goals and was the
main reason that we only conceded
one in the first half, Peter Leahy
and Alan Conroy were the only
ones who offered any resistance
against the constant pressure as
Cobh kept the pressure on. Noel
O'Riordan, Damian Clifford, Jamie
Hurley & Noel Connery, did their
upmost to hold out the attacks that
were coming through. It was 1-9 to
0-3 at half-time.
It was a formality in the second
half as the game peeped out; both
sides emptied the bench, as Cobh
strength in depth showed. It was a
tough defeat to take but they were
plenty lessons to take on board. We
can just hope that the second string
can improve from this. Team:
Anthony McCarthy, Dave Barry,
Noel O'Riordan, Damian Clifford,
Kieran Barry, Jamie Hurley,
Andrew
O'Donovan,
Noel
Connery, Brendan Flynn, Finbarr
Brosnan, Alan Conroy, Peter
Leahy, Kieran O'Shea, Bill
Whelan, Jamie Woods, Subs Used:
John O'Shea, Mikey Connery,
Eoghan Heagrty, Denis O'Brien,
Mikey Barry
Referee: Niall
Barrett (Carrigtwohill).
Engagement: Everyone in the club
would like to congratulate Liam
Mulcahy & Corena Mulkerrins as
they announced their engagement
at the weekend. We wish them the
very best in the future!
Rebel Call : The Club would like
to congratulate John Cashman on
playing with the Cork minor
hurlers, recently. The rebels lost
out limerick on their first outing,
(1-12 to 0-16) bounced back to
defeat Kerry (6-24 to 1-9) but their
adventure unfortunately ended last
Thursday as Clare powered their
way through to a seven point win,
While disappointing it is excep-
tional from to this club that we are
capable to produce such talented
players as John Cronin also has
worn the red & white for the Cork
Under 21's. All we can say to John
Cashman is - keep your head up

It's a massive weekend for East
Cork clubs as Killeagh, Cloyne,

senior grade whilst Aghada are
also involved at Intermediate level.
In fact Saturday evening week is a
particularly hectic one with local
followers spoilt for choice as
games take place at a variety of
venues. Carrigtwohill have happy
memories of Pairc Ui Rinn from
last season having won both their
early championship fixtures at the
venue. This year all eyes will be
on the 'blue and gold" as they aim
to follow up last year's fairytale

hoping to rediscover the form that
saw them defeat Glen Rovers in
last year's championship. Sar's
will start as favourites but, the men
in black red will be quietly confident of another big performance.
Saturday's other match of local
interest features Aghada who journey to play Fermoy at Ballynoe in
the Intermediate Championship.
After the football loss to
Castlehaven last week, Aghada
have been focussed on the small
ball since and will make a huge

Midleton fans will out in force on

After weeks of anticipation,
preparation and perspiration it
all came good on the night and
our main event of the year, The
Jim Hourigan 5-miler was one of
which Jim himself would have
been justifiably proud.
From the time entries opened at
5pm on Tuesday evening until
Marc picked up the last mile-marker late on Thursday night the concerted effort of our club committee
under the expert stewardship of
race director, John Cashman was
evidence to all that our club has
one of the finest races on the roadrunning calendar. The race itself
was a classic with Bantry AC's and
former winner of the Cork City
Marathon, Alan O'Shea hitting the
line in 25:00 flat. Eagle's Sinéad Ní
Chonchubhair took the ladies title
in 29:29.
The six-hundred strong field
included 110 of our own members.
John Hennessy led the Midleton
team home in 28:28 with Darragh
Canavan and Kevin Smith in his
slipstream both comfortably finishing under the 29-minute mark.
Adam Duchnicz recorded a PB in
breaking the 30 minute barrier.
Kieran Mulcahy, Nigel Carroll,
Mike Dolphin, Emmett Rohan and
Brian Cott also finished in the
business end of the race. Great running too from Cork marathonbound Barry Aherne and Don
Ryan. Michelle Kenny's progress
continues on an upward spiral as
she ran well under 35 minutes to
lead our ladies. Amongst them
were several category prize winners including, Helen Gilroy,
Margaret Jones, Mary O'Keeffe,
Elaine Hennessy, Margaret Barry,
Margaret Rohan and Joan Hough.
Our men were also up and down
from the dizzy heights of the podium with John Hennessy, Tom
Cody, Stan Bychecz all heading
home wearing various shades of
gold, silver and bronze.
It was a terrific night for which
plaudits are extended not only to
John Cashman and the committee
but to all athletes who took part or
who selflessly gave of their time to
steward, cater and support. At the
post-race post-mortem in The
Maple your praises were duly
sung! (nice running here too from
Brian McCarthy!)
Tom Cody was among the prize
winners again at the Drimoleague
Festival 5k last Monday taking 1st
0-50. Tom's time of 19:48 saw him
finish eighth overall and had the
organisers demanding a birth certificate.
Michelle Kenny was the first lady
home with Mags Twohig also picking up a prize. West Cork too saw
a terrific performance from Kevin
Smith who finished 6th overall in
a highly competitive Bandon 10k
last Saturday.
Well done too to Marion Cronin
and Caitlin O'Mahony who finished in commendable times in the
half-marathon event at the same
venue. Mary Toher completed the
Limerick marathon three weeks
after running the same distance in
Brighton. Mary O'Mahony also ran
in Limerick notching up a sixth
marathon finish. Sincere congratulations to the two Marys.
The Pfizers 6 Miler was run last
week on a miserable night in
Ringaskiddy. Again there were
some terrific performances from
several of our club members. At
the risk of an onset of reader déjà
vu, Tom Cody took yet another
first! Helen Gilroy, Stan Bychecz
and Mary O'Keeffe also left this
BHAA event with gear-bags
bulging with category prizes.
With three weeks to go to the
Cork City Marathon several of our
athletes are pushing up the mileage
in anticipation.
Please contact John, Edmund or
Sally if you are taking part, particularly if this will be your first
marathon or if you are entering a
club relay team. That said it will be
hard to beat "Guess Who's the
Granny?" for a team name this
year. We are still guessing ladies.
Training continues as usual at the
CBS on Mondays at 6.30pm and
from the Community Centre on
Tuesdays at 7pm.
Check the blog for updates and
news of races. Until next time...
keep on running.

Race to the Stables Qualifiers
2012; A change has been made for
2012 where a golfer has qualified
already for the race to the Stables.
His place will go to the next best
golfer who has not already qualified.
From the first 2 weeks both Stephen
O'Brien and Dan Buckley...! have
qualified twice. In this case on the
2nd week the next best cards were
Pat Kerrigan and Dan Carroll.
Stephen and Dan Buckley will be
entitled to 2 weeks prize money and
Pat and Dan Carroll will be entitled
to play the Race to the Stables final
and win any prize on offer that day.
This will increase the number of
players on the final day and hopefully create a better atmosphere.

The wet April weather has put paid
to some of the fixtures in the
Private Home Care Inter-Club
Championships but despite the
challenges most Districts have
reached the second round stage of
their championships.
In East Leinster, Dun Laoghaire
Golf Club is well positioned with a
team in every competition with the
exception of the Intermediate Cup.
In the Junior Foursomes, Dun
Laoghaire, District champions in
2007 play Naas (who beat 2006
winners Hazel Grove) in the 2nd
round. In the Junior Cup again Dun
Laoghaire District winners in 2008
and 2010 are safely through to the
2nd round against Powerscourt
while
2006
champions
Craddockstown and 2009 champions Dublin City meet in round 2.
In the Minor Cup Dun Laoghaire,
reigning District Champions play
Glen of the Downs while Elm
Green beat the 2006 and 2008
champions Malahide.
Beaverstown, current Challenge
Cup champions beat Swords and
play Hermitage in their next fixture
and
2010
champions
Dun
Laoghaire take on Milltown.
In Connacht Curra West and
Mountbellew with two District
Junior Foursomes titles a piece and
both with All Ireland medals Curra West in 2011 and
Mountbellew and 2010 are safely
through to the second round and
nicely positioned at opposite ends
of the draw.
Junior Cup champions Athenry
were beaten by Gort in the first
round while the same fate happened
2009 and 2010 Intermediate Cup
champions and 2006 and 2007
Minor Cup champions Galway Bay
who were knocked out by
Oughterard and Dunmore Demesne
respectively.
East Cork reign supreme in the
Private Home Care Inter-Club
championships in Munster and are
current All Ireland champions of
the Junior Cup and have won the
District pennant in each of the other
singles competitions since the
inception of the National finals in
2006. The club will no doubt hope
to put their name on a foursomes
title in 2012.
Competition is underway in Ulster's
Junior Foursomes with the 2009 All
Ireland champions Edenmore, 2010
District Champions Belvoir Park
and current holders Clandeboye all
safely through to the second round
while Spa, holders of the Minor cup
where literally knocked out at the
first hurdle by Knock!
In Mid Leinster, Enniscorthy prove
to be formidable opposition having
won the District title in Senior
Foursomes last year and All Ireland
medals twice in the Junior Cup
(2008 & 2010) and once in the
Intermediate
Cup
(2007).
However, Courtown who are hosting the National finals in September
and would love a team present have
knocked out Enniscorthy in the
Intermediate Cup and impressed
again in the Challenge up defeating
current All Ireland Champions
Woodenbridge.

MIDLETON JUVENILE GAA
Fe-12
We welcomed a high flying Valley
Rovers to CBS last Wednesday for
a league game and they showed
why they haven’t lost a game in
this league. In tough conditions we
matched valley Rovers in both
games until the last few minutes of
both matches were they were able
to pull out a small lead there was
some great performances from the
Midleton boys Connor O’Leary
showing some strong running with
good movement, all through the
match and on the other team Cian
Farmer and Cian Murray trying
hard all game. We had 23 players
turn up for the match.
It is important for all players to
turn up for training as there are a
few big hurling matches coming up
in the next few weeks so please
make an effort to train or to notify
mentors if you cannot make it.
On Saturday 5th May our Fe 12
Hurlers played a Blitz at
Kilcormac, Offaly (home of our
Selector, Paddy Murray). We travelled with a panel of 20 (2 Teams
of 10). We played Birr &
Kilcormac of Offaly and O
Loughlin Gaels of Kilkenny. We
played 6 games, winning 4, drawing 1 & loosing 1. Midleton
Magpies won the Shield competition and Midleton Rebels came
runners up in the Plate competition. There were some excellent
performances from our Team.
Kilcormac were great hosts and all
enjoyed the hurling. We also
stayed overnight at Birr Outdoor
Activity Centre, where all enjoyed
Orienteering, Archery, Table
Tennis, Basketball and other Team
Games, including "doing the wash
up" after dinner, setting tables etc.
There were some "Brilliant" performances
here.....even
the
Selectors gave a hand. Our Under
12 Hurlers on the Trip were: Ross
Shanahan, Alan Power, Mark Daly,
Niall Higgins, Cormac Hill, Fergus
Wade, Ciaran Evans, Evan
Rowlands, Cian Murray, Tommy O
Connell, Ross O Regan, Cormac O
Brien, Jake Shanahan, Harry
Holohan, Ryan O Riordan, Ronan
Lynch, Coleman Quinn, Babatunde
Olotu Jubril, Colin Edgebe, Scott
Wholohan,
Fe-11; We played at home on the
main pitch v Kiltha Óg on
Saturday 12th in a hurling league
game. It promised to be a good
event as we knew Kiltha had some
good players and we had had some
close matches previously.
This event would prove to be just
as equal.
Midleton were down some players
for various reasons and we were
helped out on the day by 5 Fe 10
lads.
We split into two equal teams for
matches of 20 minutes a side.
Midleton did not have their way
from the start with Kiltha Óg putting on pressure from early on.
Midleton however were quick to
the ball and were determined to get
the best result. At half time both
matches were fairly even and on
the resumption we got stuck right
back in. Overall we played well but
need to be a bit cuter when getting
our scores and use our strengths.
In the end we won one game and
lost the other but learned in both
matches.
Many thanks to Kiltha Óg for travelling and we look forward to
meeting again soon for the football. Thanks also to the Fe 10’s
who helped out on the day.
Training
Training is back in full swing for
Juvenile teams. Check the club
website www.midletongaa.com on
the juvenile team page for your
child’s team training times. We
would ask parents to encourage
their children to practice during the
week even if the weather is bad,
parents can practice catching the
ball indoors. Please remember to
bring your €2 to training sessions.
This money is vital to keep the
juvenile section of the club funded.
We have re commenced the coffee
morning on Saturdays. Parents
with children practicing can get a
free cup of coffee and admire their
kids in action. Many thanks to
those parents who are helping with
the teas and coffees.
Club Gear
Midleton GAA juvenile club will
have a shop with club playing and
leisure wear open on the first
Saturday of each month. This will
commence with the indoor training
sessions in the Community Centre
and then in the Club Pavilion once
outdoor training re-commences.
Kellogs 2012 Cúl Camp
The dates are out for this year’s
Cúl Camp. The camp will take
place from the 2nd to the 6th of
July. Boys from Junior Infants up
are welcome to attend. Further
details are available on the club
website www.midletongaa.com .
Juvenile Golf Classic
The Midleton Juvenile GAA Golf
Classic will take place once again
this year. Following on from the
great success of last year we hope
we will receive strong support
again in 2012. The dates have been
confirmed as Wednesday 18th and
Thursday 19th of July. The competition will once again take place in
East Cork Golf Club.
Once again the main sponsor will
be Blackwater Motors Cork,

Aghada GAA NEWS
Monday 7th May S.F.C.
Castlehaven 0-12 Aghada, 0-9
It's the backdoor route for our senior footballers, after they went
down to last year's beaten finalists
Castlehaven, in this year's first
round played in Newcestown, on
Bank Holiday Monday. It was a
hard fought contest all through, but
the 'Haven just had that bit more in
their arsenal, when it mattered
most going into the final stages.
With less than 10 minutes to go the
West Cork men led by 2. Aghada
missed two long range frees, and
on both occasions, Castlehaven
won the resulting kick out and
broke up the field for 2 points to
lead by 4 points with 5 minutes to
play. Aghada were really chasing
the game from here on and while
Cian Fleming did pull one back
from a placed ball, Aghada never
really looked like hauling in the
'Haven, who held on for a deserved
victory.
Aghada played against the wind
(although it was more cross field
than anything) in the 1st period and
quickly fell behind when the
Castlehaven corner forward
superbly judged the strong wind to
guide over the 1st score of the day.
Aghada responded in splendid
fashion. Playing two inside, in the
form of Josh O'Shea and Cian
Fleming, these two players and
would torment the Castlehaven
defence all day. 1st Josh was
fouled, but Aghada missed the
resulting free. A couple of minutes
later however Fleming scored a
great opener for Aghada after good
support play from O'Shea and
Gerard Melvin. A minute later Josh
fisted a good point and on 10 minutes Tony Wall drew a foul and
Fleming pointed the free. In
between Castlehaven pointed, to
leave it 3 points to 2 to Aghada.
Castlehaven drew level on 15 minutes, and then 10 minutes passed
without a score for either side.
Both sides were guilty of bad misses in this period, and Aghada
'keeper Andrew O'Donoghue also
made a fine save. Tony Wall
earned another free, again converted by Fleming on 25 minutes, and
a minute later impressive wing
back Shane Wall was put through
by Josh O'Shea for a fine score
from play. Castlehaven replied on
27 minutes to finish the scoring for
the 1st half, as Aghada headed for
the changing rooms leading by 5
points to 4.
A super Fleming point from way
out on the right hand side, gave
Aghada a 2 point lead a minute
after the restart. The 'Haven
responded quickly however with 2
in two minutes to draw level ,
before another fine score from
Josh O'Shea briefly propelled
Aghada to the front again.
Significantly Aghada had to
replace Eoin Healy at midfield
where he had being playing well,
and Castlehaven were to dominate
this sector to the end especially on
the kick outs, winning a lot of
breaking ball. 4 points for the West
Cork men in the next 10 minutes,
with only a fantastic Fleming point
from a sideline in reply, gave
Castlehaven a 2 point lead heading
into the final ten, and from here
they had the experience, knowhow
and talent to see it out to the end
and rightly earned the spoils.
Aghada Team and Scorers Andrew O'Donoghue, Stephen
Cashman, Billy Hennessy, Kieran
O'Connor (Captain), Shane Wall
(0-1), Brendan Crowley, Brendan
Flaherty, Tom O'Neill, Eoin Healy,
Pearse O'Neill, Gerard Melvin,
Michael Russell, Tony Wall, Cian
Fleming 0-6 (3f's, 1 s/line), Josh
O'Shea 0-2. Subs used: Eoin
Savage for Healy (40), Colm
Power for Melvin (43), Brian Wall
for Hennessy (57).
Just before the game selector
Kenneth O'Keeffe suffering a blow
from a football in the kick around
before the game.
A 55 minute delay resulted before
the throw-in took place Kenneth
receiving medical attention on the
pitch before an ambulance arrived
to transfer him to hospital. He had
x-rays and was just kept in hospital
overnight for observation and is on
the mend. Have quick recovery
Ken and all the best from all at the
club.

U/16 Football - Football League
Kiltha Óg 0-5 Slihba Rua 3-13
On a very windy and wet evening
we put in a poor performance and
gave Slihba Rua an easy win.
Playing with the strong wind we
never got going and found ourselves two points down at half time
with only Ryan Denny 0-2 and
Cian Haines pointing from a free.
Second half was nearly all one way
traffic with only points from Cian
and Eoin Roynane in return. There
were few standout performances
although Andy Cronin, Eoin
Roynane and Ryan Denny kept
going to the end. We now take a
break from matches whilst the
exams kick in but will resume
training in a few weeks to prepare
for championship.
U/14 Hurling Alley Contest
We are now down to the last four
after the remaining quarter finals
concluded this week. They say that
we save the best wine to last but in
our case it was the reverse with the
opening match producing a classic
contest which went all the the way
to the wire. Niall O' Donovan and
Eoin Cashman gave us a memo-
rable game with the lead changing
hands many times. It went to a
final third set with Niall eventually
coming out on top by the mimimal
margin. Young Daragh Moran produced a quality performance to
defeat Anthony Mc Auliffe 2-0 and
Conor Whyte beat Cian Walsh 2-0
after another good game. We look
forward to the semi finals which
should produce great contests with
the outcomes very hard to call.

U/12 Hurling- Hurling league
Erin's Own 3-1 Kiltha Óg 5-2
We began our U12 hurling Lge
campaign with a hard fought 5-02
3-01 win over Erins Own at a wet
and windy Caherlag.
A lot of credit must go to both
teams for a great contest in very
trying conditions. Playing into a
very strong wind we were under a
lot of pressure from the word go
but thanks to some great defending
from Micheal Leahy and Jack
Bowles we managed to limit the
damage to a single goal after ten
minutes. We were finding our own
feet now and a big return of 4 goals
from Daragh Moran, Dylan Healy,
Philip Kelleher and Joseph Stack
had us nicely in front. Erins Own
replied with a goal and a point
before the half ended.Half time. 401,2-01.
The second half was a real battle
with both teams fighting for every
inch and every ball. Erins Own
were first to score and this goal left
only a goal in it. All the lads had to
dig very deep now to stop them
drawing level but big performances from Cormac Griffin, Cian

The minor footballers took on our
neighbours Russel Rvs in round 4
of the football league on Thursday
night 3rd May.
On a difficult night for football this
was an entertaining game that was
in the balance right up to the final
whistle with the scores level at
1.04 each at the interval,the goal a
lovely finish from young Matthew
O Neill following a good passing
move.
The second half continued in the
same vain with scores very hard to
come by,we got our noses in front
following a Ciaran Mullins goal
and at this stage it looked like we
would hold out for a victory but
the concession of a late soft goal
saw us lose out by a point 2.06 to
2.05. This was a good effort from a
young side who gave their all on
the night.

Under 10 Hurling KILTHA OG
1 2-4 VALLEY ROVERS 1-0
Kiltha Og U-10s played their first
hurling match of the year when
they hosted Valley Rovers on
Saturday last the 5th of May.
Kiltha Og 1 settled quickly, with
the midfield trio of Brian
Dunleavey, Niall Geaney and
Ciaran Joyce, winning plenty of
possession. However it was Valley
Rovers that opened the scoring
after 10 minutes with a well taken
goal. Two points by the impressive
Mike O Dwyer narrowed the gap,
and just before half time Ciaran
Joyce levelled matters.
Playing with the aid of the breeze
in the second half, Kiltha got off to
a flyer when Ciaran Joyce goaled
from distance. Dylan O Hallorahan
was having a fine game in the centre back berth, and Kevin Knowles
next to him was taking no prisoners. Another goal, this time from
Darragh Joyce put a bit of daylight
between the sides, and the score of
the match came from Mikey O
Dwyer when he cut a beautiful
sideline cut over the bar.

VALLEY ROVERS 1-1
Kiltha Og 2, were slow to settle
and looked like they were going to
be over run when playing against
the wind in the first half. Valley
Rovers led by 1-1 to 0-0 at half
time, but it was noticeable that
Kiltha Og was getting a grip on the
game, leading up to half time.
Kiltha bombarded the Valley
Rovers goal at the start of the second half. Killian Meaney was
unlucky when he hit a rasper off
the crossbar, and the forwards were
unfortunate to hit the side netting
on a couple of occasions. However
full forward James Ahern opened
his teams account with a fine solo
goal after 5 minutes of the second
half. The introduction of Leo
Hennessy steadied the ship at midfield, and points from Leo, and a
haul of 1-2 from Andrew Kelly,
insured that Kiltha had their noses
in front at the end of the game.

U12's played their third league
game away to Lisgoold. This
game was played on a wet and very
windy evening the conditions not
suiting either team. We started the
game with a wind blowing across
the pitch which was a disadvantage
at times. Midleton played very
well in the first half going into
half-time well up. Midleton's
scores came from Rayanna Power,
Claudia Kearney and Molly

dominated by Midleton again the
wind was a big factor in this half
and made play difficult for both
sides. Midleton girls played very

Ballycotton Summer Series Begins
in Ballyandreen Next Week
By John Cashman
Whatever the weather, one sure
sign that the day light hours pass
10pm is guaranteed when one
notices the appearance of the
Ballycotton Summer Road Race
Series on the local sports calendar.
After the excitement of the ‘10’
Mile event in March local runners
are now gearing up for four separate challenges over the shorter 5
mile distance. It all begins at picturesque
Ballyandreen
on
Thursday week 24th, with race 1 of
4 beginning at 8pm.
Those who have travelled these
roads before will be well familiar
with the drill. “Get there early”
remains the best advice as another
big entry is assured. Whether you
are travelling from west or east, the
familiar race arrows on the telephone poles at road junctions
should come to your notice on the
approach roads as you come near
to the venue. The work load for the
organisers is particular heavy for
this race, as all entries need to be
inputted individually for the opening fixture. So play your part by
arriving early and of course if you
are not taking part, help would be
greatly appreciated with regarding
to stewarding etc, so do bring
along a high vis’ jacket.
Incidentally the Summer Series
which attracted over 500 runners to
each of it’s races last year, continues in June at Shanagarry, in
Churchtown South 4 weeks later
and concludes in Ballycotton in
late August. Remember races take
place on the fourth Thursday of
each month.
Whilst the usual prizes will be presented after each race, the accumulative times of each athlete will
determine the overall prizes at the
end of fourth race. Remember
there is also the coveted “Top 50” t
shirts for the leading men and the
“Top 15” t shirts for the leading
ladies. Runners who complete all
4 races will also receive a souvenir
plaque.
Emer Casey Memorial 10K
Before the Ballyandreen race,
Sunday next sees the Emer Casey
Memorial 10K race in Youghal.
Rce HQ is at Pobalscoil Na
Trionide where entries (€20) will
be taken from mid morning. The
race starts at 1.30pm from nearby
and the runners will have the benefit of a fast mile early on as they
descend to Summerfield Cross
before heading for the town centre
and finishing on the front strand.
Best of luck to all competitors!

INDOOR BOWLS
MIDLETON LADIES DOMINATE
On Tuesday May 8th the highlight
of our season in the Midleton
Bowls club with the finals of both
the "Dolly Horgan" Perpetual trophies taking place before a near
full turn out of members in the
G.A.A. pavilion. Dolly was a long
time member of our club and one
of the most respected and fun-loving players who really enjoyed her
game of bowls in the club and
going to Killarney with her
beloved husband Finbarr every
year after Christmas. Her son Ken
is now following in Dolly's footsteps and is showing great promise
in the game of bowls.
We were guaranteed new names on
both trophies this year as all our
finalists were involved in their first
final. George Morgan and Callie
O’Sullivan set the ball rolling in
the Plate and at the half-way stage
George was in a very strong position with a 5 shots to 1 shot lead
but in the second period of play
Callie finished very strong by winning 4 of last 5 ends and record a
good win by 10 shots to 7 shots
after a top class game.
With a great buzz in the hall our
umpire for the night Malcolm
Taylor tossed a coin to commence
the highlight of the night as Kay
Savage and Rose O Sullivan took
to the mat to do battle for the Cup
and prizes on show.
Club Chairman introduced both
players to the packed hall and also
thanked Tony O Shea and Danny O
Keeffe for acting as markers for
both games and Malcolm for doing
umpire for the night.
Rose started with some great bowls
but Kay showed all her experience
and was playing some big shots to
take a 5 shots to 2 shots lead at half
way. Rose fought back and with 2
ends left was holding 3 but Kay
showed her nerves of steel by playing a great bowl to hold 1 but back
came Rose landing her bowl on the
jack to take the game to the last end
with everything still to play for but
Kay kept the end tight as Rose
picked up 1 shot to finish a great
game with Kay holding on for a
narrow win and the crowd gave all
four players a standing ovation at
the end of 2 great games.
Finbarr Horgan presented all prizes
to the winners and runners-up and
Ken and his daughter Andrea
joined Finbarr in the presentation
of the "Dolly Horgan" Perpetual
trophy to the 2012 winner Kay
Savage after one of the best competition our club has sorted. Tadgh
Barry thanked the Horgan family
and paid special tributes to Dolly
for her years in the club and
thanked all club members who
took part and a total of 51 games
were played in the competition.

AGHADA GAA NEWS
IHL
Aghada
2-16
Aghabullogue1-11
After the disappointment of last
Monday the Intermediate hurlers
bounced back to record their third
win of the campaign in a blustery
but sunny Rostellan
Aghabullogue opened the better,
scoring 1-4 to Aghada's two points
that came from the stick of Cian
Fleming from dead balls in the
opening quarter.
Seeing the threat that the visitors
posed Aghada pulled Melvin out as
an extra mid field man and Conor
Rice out to the forty leaving just
Pearse and William, operating in
the full forward line and how it
works with both players setting up
each other for a major.
As we entered the second quarter
Tim Hartnett won a great ball
found Brendan Crowley who
found Pearse who set William up
as he rattled the net after he doubled on the ball. Aghada now took
control and three points followed
from Cian two frees and one from
play. Pearse, Melvin, and Dave
Rice added minors while
Aghabullogue could only add two
to leave the Aghada ahead at the
short whistle by 1-8 to 1-6.
With in a minute of the restart
Shane Wall and Pearse pushed us
further ahead but Aghabullogue hit
back with three unanswered points
to bring it back to a one point
game.
On the 37th minute, Pearse added
another and then a minute later
after great work William returned
the favour as he set Pearse up for
his goal. For the rest of the game
Aghada confined Aghabullogue to
just two more points while Trigger,
and two from William finished
Aghada's scoring.
