The Dominican Republic Tourist Board, British Airways and AMResorts teamed up to host a group of
agents on a fam trip to the Dominican Republic last month. Agents visited several attractions
including Saona Island and Altos de Chavon. Pictured checking out a cathedral are, from the left:
Lianne Cooper, Caribtours; Claire Morgan, BA Holidays; Gareth Howells, The Holiday Place; Rachel
Kneller, Funway Travel; Gustavo Candelario, Dominican Republic Tourist Board; Natasha Smith, Blue
Bay Travel; Nicola Swabey, Hayes & Jarvis; and Erys Beltre, Dominican Republic Ministry rep.
Industry urged to capitalise on activity breaks for over 50s
IN2ACTION HAS launched a new range of
holiday activities for the 50+ age group,
following what it has identified as a lack of
provision within the market.
The company says holiday parks, resorts
and hotels can improve their customer
satisfaction scores and rebooking rates by
providing more activities tailored for this
booming demographic.
The number of fifty-somethings in
Britain matches the population of
Australia and is almost as diverse. They
own 80% of the UK's wealth, worth more
than £280billion.
The company's managing director,
George Ross, said: “The 50-plus market
seems to have been forgotten when it
comes to new exciting activity concepts.
Whether it’s adrenaline-fuelled activities,
pool activities, health and wellbeing,
cycling, team-building or more passive
group activities, it’s clear that those 50 and
over want part of the action.
“Their wealth represents a huge
opportunity to the UK holiday industry but
activities need to be tailored to this very
specific market.”
Among the ways Ross suggests things
could be improved are introducing more
instructors and coaches who are aged 50plus age group leading activities, having
sessions that are age-restricted to the
demographic so participants feel they are
with their peers and tapping into current
trends such as the Great British Bake Off
and Come Dine With Me.
Majority of Brits can't name world leaders of popular holiday destinations
A RECENT poll by Sunshine.co.uk has
revealed that Brits fall behind when it
comes to their awareness of the powerful
figures linked to popular holiday destinations.
A total of 2,189 people aged 18 and over
in the UK took part in the study, along with
1,062 adults from countries overseas.
Respondents were asked questions about
world leaders to test their knowledge of the
subject, so that results could be compared.
The people taking part were asked to
identify any of the world leaders associated
with a list of popular holiday destinations
(either the president, prime minister, king
or queen).
When asked to identify a world leader
who was in power in Mexico, 96% of the
respondents failed to name Enrique Peña
Nieto as President. Furthermore, only 5% of
respondents could name the current King of
Spain as Felipe VI. All of the respondents
failed to identify the President of Cyprus as
Nicos Anastasiades and 74% of the Brits
taking part could name neither the
President nor the Prime Minister of France.
However, when the non-UK residents
took part in the poll, from an equal spread
of countries, 78% of all foreign respondents
could correctly identify David Cameron as
Prime Minister of the UK, while 91% could
identify Queen Elizabeth II as the Queen of
Great Britain and the British Empire.

ELL, WHAT can I say...it’s not what a difference a
day makes but a week! Unbelievable - the
beheading in France and then the massacre in
Tunisia. It never ceases to amaze me that the good old
British public are very quick to blame and grumble.
According to reports, people say we should have had
planes setting off within half an hour to rescue people.
They don’t realise that these things take a bit of planning
and extra man power. Jet2 had extra staff working over
the weekend and had planes going out the next day to
bring people back – they did an amazing job and all I see
are silly comments about not being able to get through on
the phone etc.
Part of our job should be to calm people and, if they are
not going away immediately, tell them it would be best to
ring in a week or so rather than stop people getting
through that have family out there! Reps in resort must
have been working 24/7. Thomson & Thomas Cook were
also quick to respond as well.
I have to say I really would not be encouraging anyone to
change their holiday to Tunisia. I think it will be one of the
safest places to be and that people will be bending over
backwards to make sure customers have a great holiday.
They did not want this to happen and they must be in
shock too at the devastation it is going to cause to their
country and their jobs. I also think the media (TV and
papers) should be told not to print such scaremongering
rubbish as well, and ITV should be ashamed of its
programme 'How safe is my holiday?' - what a load of
drivel!
The Yorkshire Travel Ball is now sold out. Thank you to
everyone for their wonderful support, especially to Jet2 for
sponsoring the welcome drinks and the boy band - they
really do support their local agents. A big thank you to
Wayne at Cruise and Maritime for donating a wonderful
star prize - I won’t say what it is, but I hope I win it!
‘Don’t look back, you’re not going that way’ and ‘We
easily become trapped in the ‘someday’ mentality,
someday I’ll have enough money, some day etc., etc., enjoy
the here and now’.

Industry Insight
by...
Andy Stark, managing director of The Global Travel Group, explains how it's the small changes
an agency makes that can make all the difference...
HE TRAGIC events in Tunisia have sadly placed our
industry in the spotlight. It is in these uncertain
times that agents’ in-depth knowledge and that
one-to-one relationship with the customer are
invaluable for providing holidaymakers with up-to-date
information and reassurance, as well as directing them
to the official travel advice organisations.
T
I am always shouting about the benefits of booking
through an agent – specialist insight, first-hand
destination experience and the latest deals. Now, more
than ever it is important for independent travel agents to
brush up on the basics as holidaymakers look to the
experts for guidance.
It’s the small changes and improvements that can
make a big difference. Outdated window displays that
haven’t changed for months for example are a no no.
Replacing these with eye-catching displays to re-engage
with existing customers and attract new ones looking for
that personalised booking experience and added insight
can go a long way.

Online marketing offers a host of simple and costeffective opportunities to inspire clients looking for their
next getaway. A Greek island photo gallery on Facebook
definitely does it for me, so tap into your own image
bank or speak to operators for existing video content
that they are happy for you to use to really inspire
customers.
"Whilst the bucket and spade deals
can be volume drivers, honing a
specialist skill is where the good
retailers always prosper"
We all know that social media is a powerful tool, and
one that agents should be embracing. It’s great for
running competitions, sharing the latest deals and
reinforcing your skills as specialists, as well as a quick
way to offer reassurance to customers on urgent
matters. An engaged online customer base is invaluable
and it’s important to give them something back in
return. Whilst incentives are enticing, so is in-depth
knowledge. Recommendations on hotels in Florida for a
family trip to Disneyland, last-minute luxury getaways or
sound advice for customers booked on a holiday to
Greece this summer demonstrate your insight and skills
that make booking through agents a worthwhile
experience.
As well as maximising on marketing opportunities, I
always say to agents to highlight their specialism and
shout it from the rooftops. Whilst the bucket and spade
deals can be volume drivers, honing a specialist skill is
where the good retailers always prosper. When speaking
to agents at industry events I hear more and more that
customers are looking to them for comprehensive
knowledge of a destination. Whether you are a luxury
agent and have stayed at all the top resorts in the
Maldives, know the family cruise market like the back of
your hand or your passion for Asia has grown into a
successful and specialised agency, be sure to make the
most of this.
So, we aren’t talking big changes here; it’s important
to be prepared for issues affecting the travel industry
and getting back to basics is the best way for agents to
do this. When holidaymakers face uncertainty we need
to ensure that we are offering the support and practical
advice, and that your direct relationship with the
customer is what sets you apart from other holiday
booking options.

E
GYPT IS a world-class tourist destination; it borders
one of the clearest, cleanest seas in the world,
boasts a cultural heritage - from the Pyramids to the
Valley of the Kings at Luxor and good infrastructure, not to
mention a huge range of accommodation and excursions
that suit every visitor.
There’s world-class diving in a sea rarely below 26°C and
filled with tropical fish of every shape and colour, while
snorkelling and glass-bottomed boats cater for those who
prefer to stay above the water. There are deserts where
Bedouin tribes still live attached to their herds of camels
(though you do see the odd Toyota pick-up) and night skies
that leave you breathless with the numbers of stars. Then
there’s the year-round sunshine - the last time it rained in
Makadi Bay, just south of Hurghada was three years ago it lasted about two hours.

EASY ACCESS
Getting to Egypt is easy. Scheduled and charter flights
service Cairo, Luxor, Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and even
Marsa Alam, the southernmost resort on the Red Sea.
Coming soon, a new high speed ferry between Sharm el
Sheikh and Hurghada (journey time around 90 minutes) will
make for excellent east and west coast Red Sea excursions,
plus an added range of multi-centre holidays.
www.travelbulletin.co.uk
KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND
The country is seeing tourists returning in strong numbers.
Visitors in March this year were up by more than 200,000
on last year and we have seen double digit year-on-year
growth and a significant rise in repeat bookings.
Our parent company, Red Sea Hotels, is a family-owned
Egyptian company with substantial interests in four- and
five-star hotels in the Red Sea resorts, as well as a
comprehensive ground handling operation across the
country. Their portfolio is mainly offered on an all-inclusive
basis, a hugely popular choice with British and Irish visitors
in general, and families in particular.
A particular favourite for the family market is the Sunwing
Makadi Hotel, recently opened in Makadi Bay, an allinclusive resort hotel with pre-bookable connecting rooms
and family suites plus an on-site waterpark with a range of
kids’ (and adults) water rides, slides and play areas.
EMERGING TRENDS
Our most popular two-week vacation combines a sevennight Red Sea beach holiday with a seven-night Nile cruise,
complete with a fully inclusive itinerary.
A rising star, Marsa Alam is Egypt’s most southerly Red
Sea resort and one of the newest to tempt British tourists.
As well as pristine sandy beaches, fantastic coral and
marine life, plus an abundance of world class watersports
– there’s a growing choice of luxury hotels, boutique shops
and restaurants in the area.
With year-round guaranteed sunshine, the country is an
excellent winter sun option, and summer temperatures
aren’t dissimilar to Turkey or the Greek Islands – you’ll
certainly appreciate the sea breeze that is a feature of the
Red Sea resorts.

Soma Bay’s
Breaker’s Diving &
Surfing Lodge
promotes range of
activities
WITH THE trend for active
holidays on the rise and
with extreme sports such
as kite surfing becoming
increasingly popular, The
Breaker’s Diving & Surfing
Lodge at Soma Bay is
Egypt’s first watersports
lifestyle hotel.
Specifically designed
for watersports
enthusiasts, the hotel
features an on-site dive
centre, beach bar and is
located close to 7Bft
KiteHouse, which is
ranked as one of the top
three kite spots worldwide
and provides equipment
hire and lessons to
visitors.
Meanwhile, for £170, a
ten dive package can be
added to holidays, with
options to add PADI dive
courses.
The lodge also features
a Finnish sauna on the
roof and yoga classes.
Attraction World is giving visitors to Sharm the chance to learn to dive with Ocean College. Prices lead
in at £55 for a half day taster experience up to £245 for a four-day intensive PADI Open Water Dive
course. Ocean College is located in Sharm and is a five-star PADI Instructor Development Centre.
Olympic sees trend in last-minute requests for all-inclusive
OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS reports strong demand
for summer bookings on the Red Sea, with
most last-minute enquiries for all-inclusive
holidays.
The operator’s commercial director, Photis
Lambrianides, said: “Virtually all properties on
the Red Sea offer all-inclusive packages and
no matter what the client’s budget, agents will
find something to suit.”
The company acknowledges that with allinclusive packages offered by hotels at
virtually all price points from budget threestars to high-end five-stars, it is not always
easy for the client – or agent – to choose
between them.
Lambrianides said: “Regardless of star
rating, I believe the two most important things
to consider are location (beach front or not)
and the size of hotel, because the fewer
rooms, the less likely it is that the hotel can
offer choice of rooms, of dining options, and
facilities. But, for example, older couples who
want a quiet week of sun and personal service
are often happy at budget level, since they may
not want to use – and of course pay for as part
of the package price – all the facilities and
activities laid on at the larger hotels.
“And though some clients may initially shy
away from a property with 400-plus rooms,
agents should highlight the increased choice
that it inevitably offers, which is particularly
important when it comes to eating every meal
at the hotel on all-inclusive holidays. Check
out how many restaurants there are, and what
flexibility there is, especially for dining at
specialist restaurants.”
The company also suggests that agents
look into the detail of the all-inclusive
package, for instance whether drinks are local
and unbranded, or named international
brands which tend to be included only in the
very top five-star resorts.

Classic Collection ‘cautiously optimistic’ for continued rise in visitors
CLASSIC COLLECTION Holidays has
reported that overall sales to Egypt’s
Red Sea resorts for 2015 are currently
showing modest gains of 4% over the
previous 12-month period.
Despite a challenging winter season
in 2014/15, summer sales are
presently more than 20% up with the
Sussex-based operator having sold
more than 80% of its summer target.
Furthermore, with sales for next
winter more than 40% up year-onyear, the operator is cautiously
optimistic for future seasons.
Gary Boyer, the company’s head of
purchasing, said: “Egypt winter sales
were challenging for a third year in a
row, but there has been a welcome
increase in enquires for the summer
season and, although early days,
winter sales for 2015/16 are looking
more promising than they have done
for quite some time.
“To capitalise on this momentum
we’re working closely with our
Egyptian hoteliers to encourage

New figures show domestic tourism on a high after a record breaking start to the year
THE LATEST results from the Great
Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS) reveal a
strong performance for domestic
tourism in the first quarter of the year.
There were 19.7 million trips
recorded in England between January
and March this year, the highest
number of trips recorded during the
first quarter for seven years.
Expenditure also increased by 24% in
total to £3.5billion compared to 2014.
These figures are a significant
improvement on last year’s figures
which dipped due to the severe weather
conditions and flooding at the beginning
of the year.
VisitEngland’s latest Tourism
Business Monitor supports the findings
of this month’s GBTS. Nearly half of
accommodation providers and 56% of
attractions have reported experiencing
an increase in visitors for the year to
May. Looking ahead, over nine in ten of
the businesses surveyed remain
confident about the school summer
holiday period. This is particularly true
amongst accommodation providers
reporting high numbers of advanced
bookings.
VisitEngland kick-started the holiday
season with a new £4million
Government-funded ‘Holiday’s At Home
Are GREAT’ campaign, encouraging
consumers to book a holiday through
their local travel agent. The campaign
has provided a significant boost to
domestic tourism, generating more
than half a billion (£520.6million) in
incremental spend for the domestic
tourism industry and more than two
million domestic overnight holiday trips
since it was launched in 2012.
