History

The “Thacker Story” is truly
an American success story.
Thacker’s meteoric rise from
humble beginnings in a declining
Washington, D.C. neighborhood to
become one of America’s largest
casket companies is the saga of
a company that beat the odds.
n 1939, Thacker Caskets, Inc.
was founded based on the belief that
families deserve the finest choices for
their loved one’s final tribute. Over
the years, Thacker Caskets has pursued
perfection in providing funeral directors,
and ultimately families, with outstanding
quality, exemplary service, and affordable
pricing. These three values still stand
today. Over 70 years later, Thacker Caskets
remains not only a privately owned, but
a family owned company with three
generations committed to providing you
and your family with a casket carefully
crafted to meet your specific needs. This
catalog represents but a small sampling
of the broad Thacker product line. For
more information about our company or
our products, please visit our website at
www.thackercaskets.com.
Founded in 1939 by Carl C. Thacker, Thacker Caskets, Inc. began as
Old Dominion Casket Company…a relatively small, local casket jobber
serving the greater Washington, D.C. market. Thacker ingenuity was
evident from the start as Carl pioneered a number of advertising and
promotional strategies. He was the first to photograph his caskets and
transfer the photos to slides. He was able to display his caskets via
projector in a vibrant slideshow format. A set of Carl’s innovative slides
remain as part of the company’s historical archives.
Following Carl’s death in 1981, his wife Audrey, and son Carl J. (“CJ”)
assumed leadership roles. This was a daunting task as CJ was still in high
school. Audrey and CJ were committed to perpetuating Carl’s dream and
building on his legacy.
Under their direction the company grew and prospered. By 1989 they
had outgrown their original buildings and relocated to their present
Headquarters and Distribution Center in Clinton, MD. These facilities
featured expanded office space, an ample selection room, and a 3,000
unit casket warehouse.
Expansion continued. In 1991, Thacker opened its first satellite
Distribution Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The success of the venture led
to establishment of 11 additional distribution centers over the next 15
years. Three of the distribution centers, however, were acquired through
acquisitions of Spencer Casket Company in Richmond, Virginia (1995)
and through Balanced Line Casket Company in Cambridge City, Indiana
and Westland, Michigan (2001).
A major step forward occurred in 1999 with the acquisition of Loretto
Casket Company a small manufacturer in Loretto, Tennessee. Production
in Loretto at the time of acquisition was 22 caskets per day, but under
the ownership of Thacker increased to 160 caskets per day. By 2004 it
was clear that we were rapidly outgrowing the Loretto facilities and in
June 2005 the Thacker family purchased a 210,000 square foot building
in Florence, Alabama. This would be the new production home of Thacker
Casket Manufacturing. Today, the company proudly employs over 180
employees at this state of the art factory.
Today, three generations of Thacker’s are involved in the company and are
committed to providing a quality metal product made right here in the
United States of America. From the streets of Washington, D.C. to serving
valued Funeral Homes in 34 states, the Thacker commitment to providing
exceptional value and exemplary service has never wavered. It is the
dedication and commitment to our customers that has been the guiding
spirit. We thank our loyal customers without whose support this dream
would not be possible.

Nothing is more valuable
to our company than
the trust our customers
have placed in Thacker
Caskets, Inc. It has
always been a priority
of this company to make
sure each and every
employee has a deep
respect for the services
that Funeral Homes provide and understands the sacred duty
the casket serves. We are truly honored whenever a Thacker
casket is chosen as a part of a meaningful tribute. In developing
our product line, we listen to our customers. We strive to supply
a variety of caskets to help Funeral Directors meet the widely
varied needs of the families they serve. Our caskets reflect the
design and personalization preferences expressed by today’s
consumers at prices that all can afford. Experience has taught
us the importance of attention to the basics—on time delivery;
an actual person to talk to in an emergency; a highly trained
customer service and sales staff; and a commitment to deliver
what we promise. That’s how you build trust.

meaning and appropriateness to the ceremony. At Thacker
Caskets, Inc. we pride ourselves on our ability to meet specific

varied needs and preferences expressed
by today’s selecting families. That is why

Thacker offers a very diverse product line.
No one presents a finer selection of hand
crafted solid hardwood caskets. Many
families find the warmth and beauty of
nature’s own hardwoods familiar and
comforting. Each of us has one’s own
favorite species of wood—usually reflected
by the type of furniture we select for
our homes. With wood as a renewable
resource, it provides a great casket option
for the environmentally conscious.
