The Wonderlic Advanced Skills Test (WAST)
Overview
The WAST is an assessment of the job-related mathematics and English skills of teenagers and adults
who are applying for employment or who are entering postsecondary education programs. There are
two subtests in the WAST: The Test of Mathematics Skills (50 multiple-choice questions) and the Test
of English Skills (55 multiple-choice questions). A complete administration consists of one Mathematics
and one English form. Each subtest requires approximately 5 minutes for instructions and practice
questions and then 30 minutes for testing time for a total of 35 minutes administration time. Both tests
can be administered in 1 hour and 10 minutes. Table 1 presents a list of the various mathematics and
English skills that are measured by the WAST.

Benefits
The WAST is a self-administered, unproctored, online assessment. It is useful in distance learning and
other settings where the test taker is not readily able to test in a proctored environment. In addition,
the WAST can serve as a precursor to proctored assessments.
Grade Level
As depicted in Table 2 below, the WAST assesses a broader range of skill levels and test content than
commonly used college entry tests – based upon Common Core Standard levels from 5th grade into
the sophomore year in high school. Importantly, these Common Core Standards indicate when content
is taught, and not when content is mastered or expressed by adults. For example, although Algebra is
taught in 7th grade, it might not be mastered until 9th grade – much later. Lastly, the average difficulty
level of WAST questions is the first half of 7th grade.

*Note: This memo is specifically in regard to the WBST items. Please note that the
inclusion of the WAST in your course placement solution will increase the number of items
and will increase the amount of time for the test.
The task force identified an important discussion point regarding interpretation of test
content. It was pointed out that there are a relatively small number of items that measure Algebra (or
any topic) and that placement based on these questions may lack accuracy. It is true that reliability
and accuracy increase with the number of items in a test – up until the point in which an examinee
loses focus due to test fatigue. The WBST has been designed and statistically demonstrated to be a
highly reliable and accurate measure of math and language skills when using the respective Total
Scores. Correlations of the WBST Total Scores to other longer measures of basic skills are
indicative of high reliability and accuracy. The following table provides correlations obtained in a
recent pilot study with a similar community college system. Here, the math section of the WBST (the
WBST-Q) is a significant predictor of ACT math and Compass Pre-Algebra – in fact, it is a better
predictor of the two College Board Exams than they are to each other:
Basic skills are generally taught in sequence and learning occurs by building knowledge upon
previous knowledge. As a result, it is possible to predict and understand one specific subtopic of
skills by observing performance on related subtopics. The following table presents the intercorrelations between the subtopics of the WBST-Q and overall Quantitative/Math Score. Each
subtopic is significantly correlated to each other and the overall. For example, performance on
Geometry and Data Interpretation items are highly predictive of performance on algebra items (.59
and .58 respectively). Further, the Overall Quantitative has extremely high correlations. This analysis
suggests that math skills are acquired as a continuum rather than independent components.

In summary response to the concern about the algebra items, our recommendation is not to
use the algebra items as the sole determination for course placement. While subtopic scores are
provided to provide diagnostic information and to support remediation, course placement should be
based on overall scores that include each of the subtopics. The overall scores are highly reliable and
the best indicators of a student’s need for remediation.
