CREATIVE LIFE SPIRITUAL CENTER
●
Our 28th year!
● Jesse Jennings, Marsha Lehman and Debra Morwood, Ministers
Sunday book discussion
Here’s a new five‐Sunday
discussion group, open to all
and facilitated by minister
Debra Morwood, and using
Marcus Borg's book, Meeting
Jesus Again for the First Time:
The Historical Jesus and the
Heart of Contemporary Faith
(available in our bookstore). Borg is a
Jesus scholar and a Christian; and his chal‐
lenge to the reader is to re‐think the Jesus
whom many in Western society were
taught to know. This is our opportunity to
explore our own beliefs about Jesus and
to perhaps see Jesus in a whole new light.
The group will meet in the Quimby Room,
on the first floor of the Learning Center.
No charge, donations welcome. SUNDAYS,
JUNE 1 through JUNE 29, 9:45‐10:45AM.

Your guide to
Creative Life
Here’s a short workshop
with founding minister
Jesse Jennings that’s
especially for those new
to CLC and/or to what we
teach, and a prerequisite
for anyone wishing to
become a member who
has not yet completed Heartfelt Living.
We’ll discuss the basics of our philoso‐
phy and way of life; how the Center
came to be, and how it’s cared for and
supported; our classes and programs;
and what membership means. There
will be plenty of time for questions plus
you’ll get printed materials to take home.
No charge, donations welcome. SUNDAY,
JUNE 1, 1:00‐2:30PM, in the Quimby Room,
first floor of the Learning Center. Please
sign up in Builders’ Hall.

meditations
“...Sit and rest and refresh your soul.
Eat of the fruit and drink the wine.
All, all is yours, and you are welcome.”
—The Science of Mind textbook
It’s led by practitioner Malené Njeri, and lasts
for 35 minutes, ending in time to comfortably
get into the 11am celebration. There is music
to enhance as you are guided into a restful
state, and inspirational readings to tap into
your spiritual center. Most sessions will end
Malené Njeri
with a spiritual mind treatment based on the
theme of the readings. Don’t be concerned about being
late. There is an easy way to quickly get into the flow.
Stand a moment outside the door and bring yourself to
complete silence. Maintain that silence as you enter.
You’ll find yourself suddenly present in the meditation
and all is well. SUNDAYS 10:15‐10:50AM, in the Hopkins
Room, on the second floor of the Learning Center.
For more information, e‐mail Malené at

About Adrianne. Hailing from Minneapolis, the city that
birthed legends like Paul Westerberg, Bob Mould, and His
Royal Purpleness, Adrianne Lenker is an authentic, pas‐
sionate singer, songwriter, and performer. Her debut CD,
Stages of the Sun, produced by Steve Hodge, was released
on LucidTunes when Adrianne was only 14. Her follow‐up
CD/DVD, Live At The Southern, was recorded a few days
before her 15th birthday in July of 2006 at the Southern
Theater in Minneapolis. At 16, she shifted gears, redefining
her style as folky and raw with an indie‐pop edge. Shortly
after graduating Berklee on a full scholarship awarded by
Susan Tedeschi, Lenker moved to New York City in 2012
and released her newest, and what she considers to be her
true debut album, Hours Were the Birds. Adrianne’s vocal
influences have ranged from Billie Holiday to Björk, and
her sound has been described by blogs as “a mix of Laura
Marling, Coco Rosie and Joni Mitchell.” (madmackerel.org)
She won the 2013 Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Compe‐
tition, and was a finalist in the 2005 International Songwrit‐
ing Competition. She has opened for Susan Tedeschi at
Joe’s Pub in NYC, as well as Ryan Montbleau at Club Passim
in Cambridge, Mass. She is a poignant and versatile songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist. In a time of
assembled artistry Adrianne is a breath of fresh air.
Hours Were the Birds could possibly be just a glimpse into the future of this amazing young woman.
About Buck. Texas‐bred, Brooklyn‐based musician Buck Meek has been writing love songs and
outlaw ballads since the end of the world in 2012. It’s been said that his songs sound like the hypothetical
child of George Jones and Joan Vollmer. Buck is a Berklee College of Music graduate and has been working
as a guitarist since age 15, performing and touring across the United States and Europe as a bandleader for
Shine and Mobtet, and as a sideman for various bands and artists, such as Moishe Circus, Adrianne Lenker,
The Pleasant Revolution, Django Porter, Amanda Jones, and Dylan Meek.

Minister Debra
Morwood, CLC’s
Youth Director,
reminds everyone
that when your
children are re‐
turned to the Great
Hall on Sunday,
Rev. Debra
please note it is the
policy of the Center that each child,
no matter the age, must be super‐
vised by their adult caregiver.
The children are not allowed to
be outside their classrooms unless
accompanied. We are devoted to
providing a safe environment for
our happy children! Children begin
their Sunday learning adventures in
the redesigned registration area in
the youth foyer, then move to their
classrooms, except on one SUNDAY
each month, when those through
age 11 visit the Great Hall first to
share their thoughts with the
grownup congregation. If you have
any questions or concerns about
our classes, Debra is in the youth
lobby from 10:15‐11AM on SUNDAYS,

many thanks
what we do
We’re grateful to Janis & Lilia
Warner for their work with the
toddlers, and to Don Clesson,
for his with the teens. Now, we
welcome new teachers Jenny
Ploch and Veronica Peterman!
Many thanks too, to all the teachers
who step up when we need
someone to fill in!
The CLC Children’s and Youth
Services Department is devoted
to celebrating the spiritual develop‐
ment of each child we teach. All
age groups are involved in various
activities, workshops, and special
projects incorporating the teach‐
ings of Science of Mind. We strive
to create an atmosphere of love
and kindness in our words and
actions toward each other and to
recognize and honor the diversity
of every person.
• Toddlers (up to age 3) are
lovingly cared for by our toddler
teachers. In their very artistically
designed Discovery Room, the
children are encouraged to interact
and experience their world as only
a toddler can. They are offered
games, toys, books and other
age‐appropriate activities in a safe,
secure and loving environment.
• 3‐6 age group. Beginning around
the age of 3, our toddlers are
moved to the Ingenuity Room. This
group begins to learn the basics of
Treatment and the value of giving a
smile and a kind word. Our creative
teachers provide age‐appropriate
instruction and activities.
• 7‐11 age group are in the Quimby
Room, regularly practicing the
steps of Treatment presented in a
manner appropriate to their age
group. The teachers provide learn‐
ing tools, creative projects, work‐
shops and other teaching methods
to engage each child’s learning of
the principles of Science of Mind.
• 12‐and‐up age group meet on the
second floor of the Learning Center
in the Hopkins classroom. They are
engaged in special projects,
workshops, have guest speakers
and are involved in several
volunteer service endeavors at
CLC. The teachers working with
this group encourage their talents,
keep them engaged in learning
Science of Mind principles and we
throw in a bit of fun along the way!
Fun times for the kids on Field Day!
News for parents
• The JUNE theme for the children
is The 8 Secrets to Happiness for Kids
and Teens. These are based on
using Universal Law to bring forth
happiness from within and are
written especially for youth.
• Age‐appropriate prayer/
treatment opens all the classes.
• For each class there is age‐appro‐
priate discussion of the monthly
theme and creative projects to
enhance the learning.
• Just after noon all the teachers
and children will gather in the
reception area of the Learning
Center for our closing prayer circle.
When the prayer is complete, the
teachers will bring the children to
you in the Great Hall.
Plenty to eat, too!
Rev. Debra at her post in the youth lobby
Our commitment to the Montgomery County Food Bank’s Buddy Backpack
program has been to feed 15 young students every weekend throughout the
school year. These kids were selected by their schools as having this need,
and every Friday they went home with a backpack discreetly filled with
specially selected food to last them the weekend. Then they returned the
empty backpacks to school on Monday, for the process to repeat itself.
During the summer, we will continue accumulating funds for next year’s
service, as well as recruiting other faith communities into this project. There
are several ways you can help: by donating cash or WalMart cards (only ‐‐ no
checks, please, or generic gift cards); by working to assemble the food we
purchase for delivery to the Food Bank; and by assisting on the delivery
team to the Food Bank. Please be clear, we do not need you to bring food
items, which must be purchased according to a very specific protocol, and we have a team in place to do
that. But your donations of cash or WalMart cards are most appreciated. Our program co‐coordinators are
Carol Stromatt and Alline Dawson. With questions, or to volunteer, please e‐mail [email protected]
