RBS DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS
Dear graduates, faculty, staff, friends and supporters!
Recent economic and business developments have highlighted
the necessity for a strong global strategy for organizations and
enterprises. For business schools, it presents the challenge
to prepare students who are able to work effectively with
international counterparts using globally accepted terminology
and work practices.
To help meet this need, this year RBS welcomed 37 ambitious
young students to the new Bachelor of Business Administration
in International Management program. This undergraduate
management program has been developed in cooperation with
BI Norwegian Business School and it enables students to earn
baccalaureate degrees from both institutions. Beginning with
this year, students will also be able to obtain a double degree
in management from RBS and the School of Management at
the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. This
program includes spending a year at the University at Buffalo and
is the first of its kind in the Baltic.
This new undergraduate management program is also unique
in several other ways. Students have the unprecedented
opportunity to participate in Start-up Labs and internships in
international business offered by the companies employing the
RBS alumni to provide learning opportunities for their future
careers in international business.
RBS has also put wide effort to further internationalize other
aspects of the operations. This year, RBS welcomed students
from India and Brazil and has been looking for more international
students for the upcoming year.
Last year, the Riga Business School Advisory Board was
reconstituted with the senior representation from Latvia, Canada,
Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The members
of the RBS faculty represent and bring experience from all the
continents. Finally, RBS Alumni hold senior level management
positions in more than 25 countries around the world.
RBS has a solid foundation to provide a competitive internationally
recognized education for Latvian as well as international students.
In addition, RBS has a global alumni network to provide support
and assistance after graduation.
Riga Business School would like you dear graduates, faculty, and
students to avail yourself of the significant international resources
made available to you by us.
Sincerely yours,
Jānis Grēviņš, Ph.D.

Recognition by the employers is the most important acknowledgement of the quality of the
education provided by RTU Riga Business School.
We would like to express out gratitude and appreciation to the companies for the
employment of most of our graduates.
“Employers of the Year 2013”:
«The reputation and effectiveness of the company cannot be achieved
through marketing and advertising. It is rather a result of committed and
highly professional team bound together with the sense of mission to lead
the company towards development, constant search for improvements and
spotless service for our clients on a daily basis. To become this driving force
of the company that every management is eager to find, it is crucial that
employees are continuously hungry for knowledge and experience. Their
individual commitment to studies and challenges of personal development
is the key to success on the corporate level. For many NASDAQ OMX Riga
employees, the studies at Riga Business School have become instrumental

Why study at RBS?
«In my opinion RBS is a good option for the one who truly wants to be very successful because just wishing is not
enough for RBS standards; it requires you to jump off and leave your comfort zone so you can reach for the many
opportunities outside of it.
The faculty are both international professors and professors with international experience giving the Bachelor
Program a global approach and in-depth studies!»
Vinicius Ferez
RBS BBA student
«Working with the students in the Riga Business School MBA program is always an exciting challenge. As
experienced managers, the students come into the program already possessing a lot of knowledge and experience.
As instructors, we try to create an environment in which we collaboratively work with students to share and build
on the skills and knowledge they already have.»
Gregory S. Mathers, MBA

«MBA Studies at RBS caught my attention because of the wide range of the courses offered, the international
faculty and the quality of the educational institution itself. It is a great opportunity to broaden my knowledge
with deeper analyses from various business perspectives. An integral part of the process is interaction with other
students so I have developed many new contacts for my professional networking. The MBA program gives the
knowledge and the credibility among peers and helps to solve business problems.»

Education USA
More and more students and young professionals are seeking opportunities to study abroad. The Education USA
Information Center at RBS is here for all of you who are considering studies in the USA as a possible stepping
stone in pursuing an international education. Providing free, unbiased and comprehensive information about
higher education opportunities in the USA, the center offers:
ƒƒ Group advising sessions;
ƒƒ Individual consultations;
ƒƒ Library;
ƒƒ Testing center.
On November 14, 2012, Education USA organized the Largest annual event which was devoted to Liberal Arts
education: the concept widely known in the USA, but not so common in Europe. For the first time in the history
of the center, the Education USA Day was streamed online.
In fall 2012, the Student Ambassador Program was launched to make services of the Education USA Information
center even more available. In close cooperation with the U.S. Embassy, five students were selected to represent
Education USA in Riga, Valmiera, Ventspils and Daugavpils.
«EducationUSA Latvia not only helped me to prepare better for the international exams and the application
process, but also was my first step towards exploring the USA in general. I am very grateful to the supportive and
helpful staff for guiding me through the application process and helping me get into the one of the top Liberal Arts
Colleges.»
Jelena Jesajana
Middlebury College Alumna
«Since the process of application to a college in the United States can be very often overwhelming and confusing,
it is always important to have some help from the people who have experience in the field and Education USA
has truly exceeded my expectations by unselfishly assisting me with many things (e.g. giving financial aid advice,
approving my translated high school transcripts etc.). As for now, I have been accepted to several private schools
throughout the United States and a big part of this accomplishment goes to the always-ready-to-help people
from Education USA.»

Open Days
RBS Open Day is what we organize to invite potential students to become part of the success, knowledge and
good feelings which come from being in the RBS community. During the past year we held four Open Days both
for the Bachelor and MBA programs. The RBS Alumni and the representatives of successful companies provide
insight into both the learning environment and the value of a RBS diploma in the job market. In 2012/2013,
Airbaltic, the Embassy of Norway in Latvia, Itella Information, Baltcap, Fox Capital, FMS and Inbox.lv shared their
experience with the eager audiences. The sample mini-case study discussions, facilitated by the RBS faculty,
helped our future students to understand how we learn together.
««Open Day provides a wonderful insight into what school life is like at RBS. One can explore it from the people
who know it best - our students, alumni and staff. We share success in an informal way and people appreciate it
a lot!»

Management Program Adviser
Guest lectures
Our RBS mission is to support our students and to provide them with new experience as they become leaders
and team players, thus preparing them for life and success in the business world – whether in corporate, small
business or entrepreneurial sectors. One of the ways we do it is to invite ideas and business leaders from a range
industries and top institutions to share their knowledge with our community. We invited the representatives
from companies like Forbes Latvija, National Geographic, Latvijas Banka, Ernst & Young and many others. This is a
way of enriching our students with current thinking in various industries, the latest tendencies in functional area
thinking and cutting edge thinking about the innovation process.

Executive MBA Study Trip to the University Of
Stellenbosch in South Africa
From April 29 through May 3, 2013 the secondyear RBS Executive MBA class was on a study trip
to the University of Stellenbosch Business School
(USB) in Cape Town, South Africa. Study trips for the
MBA programs are organized to expose students
to new markets, instructors from other schools
and businesses unique to that region of the world.
The group attended lectures on the South African
economy change, management tools, marketing and
segmentation in South Africa, communication and
technology innovation in Sub-Sahara Africa, finance
development and its challenges, business modeling
using the scenarios to deal with the future and
entrepreneurship in telephony from the USB faculty.
Additionally, they visited three businesses in Cape
Town: a financial services firm expanding throughout
Africa and Asia, a wine farm and a diamond wholesaler
and jewelry manufacturer. In their free time, the
students visited the Harbor District in Cape Town,
some wine farms and the Village of Stellenbosch.

Orientation for New Students
Our new student orientation has been developed
to welcome our new BBA and MBA students
and introduce them to the RBS community. The
Orientation introduces students to one another,
develops a feeling of belonging and helps them feel
at home at RBS. The event mixes fun activities with
serious information and gives our new students
the opportunity to start developing their own RBS
network of colleagues, faculty and alumni.
«The orientation Camp was extremely amazing, because
it provided me with the great opportunity to meet my
course mates in an informal situation so I could already
feel myself as a part of RBS’s family!
Consequently, I am extremely happy with my decision to
study at RBS because a friendly ambience is one of the
keys to successful studies and we have got it! Big thanks
to the RBS administration for those awesome days!!!»

BBA StartUp Lab
StartUp Lab course is extra-curricular undergraduate series of seminars which provide students with the
opportunity to write a business plan for their for-profit or social impact venture. It focuses on tying together the
disciplines of marketing, management, finance and operations in a practical way. Students are guided through a
new venture creation process from idea generation and opportunity assessment to business plan development
and pitching it to an investor.
The content of the course revolves around sections of a business plan including idea generation, market research
and planning, financial analysis, venture funding, operations and management. Each of these topics is covered
in a session with a focus on how they need to be integrated into a coherent, logical, compelling story so that
students and/or student teams can use the obtained knowledge while developing their own plans.
After the first year of StartUp Lab, our future entrepreneurs presented the results of their StartUp projects and
proved that there are good ideas worth exploring!
«Since my first day at RBS, I have hoped to hear and do something real. Smart books full of great theory are always
good, but not enough for the competitive business world. RBS StartUp Lab gave me the opportunity to think of
and create something real i.e. something tangible. It gave me extra confidence in myself. Failure is not the end of
the world, but just an opportunity to begin something new and to improve. Also, thanks to this course I met several
interesting people and attended the seminars and the conferences which, even if they do not help me with my
StartUp, will definitely help me with my future career.»

RBS Choir
This academic year, for the RBS mixed choir consisting of the RBS alumni and students and business people was
full of significant events.
In November 2012, the choir celebrated its fifth Anniversary with a splendid concert and started off its new
season. Conductor Gints Ceplenieks raised the bar and the concert was the proof of the choir’s advancement. The
first part of the concert was a staging of “A Tale of the Sea” with several other performances. The second part was
as colourful as the past five years of the choir’s existence. The Former and present singers and conductors met in
the stories and songs from the choir’s previous seasons. We were honoured by the attendance of Song Festival
Conductor Ivars Cinkuss and Canadian ambassador John Morrison and Mrs Morrison. At the end of the year, the
RBS choir together with other RTU singing groups participated in a beautiful Christmas concert performing the
Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint Saens and Wonderland by Peteris Barisons.
The choir has been invited to the USA at the end of May to participate in a US Latvian choir workshop and
concert. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the singers to sing and relax. The season is to finish with an
emotional ending: the XV Latvian Song Festival. This will be especially significant for the RBS choir because our
artistic director and conductor Gints Ceplenieks will be the one of the Song Festival conductors. During our
summer workshop, we intend to begin preparations for the next season.
«The year 2013 is all about the Latvian Song Festival. The choir is getting out of its way to succeed and studying the
program hard. We are really excited about the event. I know the preparation takes a lot of additional time away
from the families and daily work and we all are a little tired, but happy and looking forward to being a part of one
of the most beautiful events of Latvian culture.»
Gints Ceplenieks
RBS Choir Artistic Director and Conductor
Choir rehearsals take place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the RBS premises under the
skilful leadership of Gints Ceplenieks. The RBS alumni, students and other “singing managers” are most
welcome to join!

knowledge, insights, ideas, and connections to the
alumni, students and other members of the Latvian
business community. Its activity increases awareness
and value of the RBS brand.
Company visits
Every month the alumni, students, their colleagues
and partners are invited to visit some of Latvia’s most
successful companies. These visits always lead to
valuable insights into how businesses in a range of
industries are managed. Networking during these visits
brings the immediate rewards of business contacts and
prospective deals, and the success stories of the RBS
alumni and student peers inspire us all to set higher
standards and to aspire to more ambitious goals. During
the past year, we have visited companies including
Hanza Elektronika, LMT, Statoil, McCann World Group,
Narvesen Baltija, Lido, AirBaltic, Latvenergo, SSC LVRTC
