Information & Application Form
Are you studying Media at Macquarie in
2016? Are you of Aboriginal and/or
Torres Strait Islander descent?
Macquarie University has partnered with SBS and NITV to
offer a practical and dynamic media mentorship program
for media students who are Indigenous Australians. All
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander media students are
encouraged to apply. The program will be run concurrently
with the SBS Media Mentorship, but will have specific links
with NITV and offer Indigenous-only opportunities. Second
and third year students are also welcome to apply,
however priority will be given to first year students.
What will I gain from the Mentorship?
The Mentorship will assist you with your career plans,
equip you with hands-on skills in TV, online and/or radio
and provide networking opportunities to build your media
contacts - all of which will help you establish a successful
career in media.
First Year: The first year of the SBS NITV Media
Mentorship is designed to equip you with the experience,
skills and contacts to enhance your studies and enable
you to begin developing a portfolio. Participants will be
invited to attend networking events as well as training
sessions on campus and at SBS in Artamon in their first
year.
Second Year: After successful completion of the first year
of the program, it is planned that you will be able to access
mentoring with experienced professionals and participate
in media related Community Projects under the guidance
of ECC NSW.
Third Year: Eligible students that have successfully
completed the first two years of the program will have the
opportunity to undertake a short-term work placement at
NITV in third year (which may form part of the Media
Internship unit MAS350 or Arts Internship unit FOAR300).
About SBS
SBS was founded on the belief that all Australians,
regardless of geography, age, cultural background or
language skills should have access to high quality,
independent, culturally-relevant Australian media. The
principal function of SBS is to provide multilingual and
multicultural radio and television services that inform,
educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so,
reflect Australia's multicultural society.
About NITV
National Indigenous Television (NITV) is part of the SBS
family of free-to-air channels broadcasting across Australia
providing a nationwide Indigenous television service via
cable, satellite and terrestrial transmission means and
selected online audio visual content. The content for these
services is primarily commissioned or acquired from the
Indigenous production sector.
2016 Mentorship Activities
During 2016 there will be a wide variety of activities
available at various locations. Most will be held on
campus, while other opportunities may take place at SBS
and NITV studios in Artamon, ECC NSW offices in
Waterloo and at other locations in and around Sydney.
Additional activities and opportunities will be arranged
throughout the year, and the exact dates, times and
locations will be posted to students via social media or

Does it change my study load?
The Mentorship is in addition to your studies and does not
replace academic units. For your involvement in the
program you will receive a completion certificate and
although credit points for your participation are not
currently available, this will be reviewed in the near future
While you participate in program activities you will also be
expected to maintain a reasonable academic achievement
rate in your studies to remain in the program.
How much will it cost?
It's free! You will only need to cover your transport costs.
What are the eligibility criteria?
In order to be considered, you must meet each of the
following criteria:
Be enrolled in full-time studies in 2016 in the Bachelor
of Arts – Media or associated undergraduate courses
at Macquarie University.
• Be an Australian citizen.
• Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• Be from a low-income background.
• Reside in Sydney (or within commuting distance).
After you apply, you may be invited to attend a selection
interview.

How do I apply?
Complete the attached application form and write a
statement addressing the selection criteria. Lodge your
completed form by Friday 11 March 2016. You should
submit your application in person to Scarlet Barnett,
