The winner for ‘best article’ in the March edition of the Bully was Lyn Campbell whose review of the Junior Rally at Astley was picked out by our previous winner, Joan Herbert and friend. Lyn received her £10 at the Easter Rally at the Ukranian Centre. Centre Equipment The Centre has a mains powered portable music system suitable for playing music off any device with a mini jack connection I.e. laptop, iPod or mobile. We also have a selection of sports equipment including a variety of balls, light weight football goals and cones, volleyball nets. Easter Rally nd th 2 -7 April 2015 at the Ukrainian Centre, Weston on Trent Just twelve months ago we attended our first Midland Centre rally as visitors and we enjoyed it so much that over the past year we attended several more including a fabulous holiday rally. So in January we joined the Midland centre and this was our first official rally as members. We arrived about 12.30 to be welcomed by June and then shown to our pitch. After setting up we had lunch and then relaxed waiting for several of our friends to arrive, making the most of the good weather as rain was forecast for Friday. The evening was spent in the hall with the usual welcome cuppa and bingo. Cliff was lucky, winning £5 for a line. Friday dawned wet as predicted so the day was spent catching up with friends, numerous cups of coffee and walks with the dog. The evening brought the lovely hot cross buns, tea and coffee, then we were entertained by the Mix ‘n’ Match disco. A very enjoyable evening was had by all. After the Chairman’s forum on Saturday we went into Ashby for some retail therapy, it’s a lovely little shopping centre and a little further out is Staunton Harold with great walks for the dog and a garden centre. After lunch we didn’t take part in the dancing as I tried last year and failed miserably and Cliff has two left feet. Several of our friends did and after seeing them in the evening enjoying themselves (I think) we really should try again. The boat race in the afternoon was great fun for the children and the adults. The pirate ship was an easy winner ‘till the wind caught the sails and it headed back to the starting line and the narrow boat which came sailing by didn’t help! The evening entertainment was a great success again with Troubadour and Mix ’n’ Match. Sunday after the children’s Easter egg hunt found a lot of adults, children and dogs gathering for the canal walk to the pub in the village. The weather was kind to us and by the time we reached the pub the sun had come out and everyone was ready for refreshments. We walked back through the village (a much shorter route). Then back to the ‘van for lunch and a rest! The evening started with the Easter Bonnet Parade before the Charity race night. Cliff and I had the winner of the first race but that was all. We declined to go in a syndicate for the auction as did several of our friends. Bad mistake, the rest of the group bought the winner. Closing flag on Monday brought thanks to numerous members for their help on the rally. Prizes for the competitions were given out. The juniors raised the magnificent sum of £800. We can’t yet put names to all members we see, so apologies for not naming winners etc in this report. However we can name our friends Kevin & Eileen Coles who had a very successful rally, winning their rally fees back, part owning the winning horse and also winning a peg prize(not sure if that is a correct term.) We weren’t lucky at the bingo on the evening. Tuesday after breakfast we packed up, said our goodbyes and made our way home after another lovely rally. Thanks to everyone who helped. Cliff and Sheila Taylor. Troubadour Many thanks to Mike, along with his band Troubadour, for arranging a great evening’s entertainment at the Ukrainian Centre Easter Rally. It was very refreshing to see a vibrant young live band, performing for our entertainment. The evening consisted of a well performed cross section of music that held everyone’s attention. Troubadour regularly perform all over the Black Country and have featured at Robin 2 music venue on several occasions. We have seen them several times now and never been disappointed. Our connection to the band is the drummer Mike (a Midland Centre Committee Member). What incredible energy! – And definitely the heartbeat of the band, alongside great vocalists. Thanks to the boys – Mike, Rich, Chris and Will for a great evening enjoyed by all. What very talented lads! Ron and Cathy Howell The Caravan Club National Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. We arrived at an unusually dry National Rally at Cornbury Park in Oxfordshire around 7pm on the Friday evening. After a 10 minute drive around the grounds we found our pitch next to the Porters and Sutherlands and got set up, but just as we started to put the awning the typical National drizzle began. Saturday morning was leisurely affair getting up at 9.00 and then cooking breakfast on the Cadac, not the hurried running around delivering sports kits to those who were taking part in competitions at stupid o’clock, followed by the rush of everyone trying to get the main arena for the start of the competitions at 9.00. As the rally didn't officially open until the Saturday this year, the format had changed and the competitions were starting on the Sunday, so at noon Jim, Chris, Mandy and I set off suited and booted to the Regional Reception in the Chairman's lines while Ian, Doreen along with Emily and Patrick donning their Centre t-shirts headed to represent the Centre in the first competition of the weekend -Petanque, unfortunately they got knocked out early on. How time flies when you're having fun, it's 2.00pm so off to the main arena for the children's sports, this saw Emily take 2nd in obstacle race and 1st in the sprint (some Presidents Cup points), Patrick unfortunately had the wrong footwear on and slipped at the start to finish 4th in both. No sooner had the races and medals been handed out it was back to the van for Emily to put on her Chairlady's Jewel for the next engagement of the day the Chairman's Reception, where we were welcomed by Caravan Club Chairman Grenville Chamberlain and his wife Liz, this was followed by the Opening Ceremony, all this socialising is a hard job but someone's got to do it. With the formalities over, we just had time to nip back to the van again to change and then into the Sports bar for the start of the oversubscribed darts competition and have a pint or 2, while the kids headed off to the MAYDAY Club with Xbox, Table Tennis, Table Football, Laser Quest, Climbing Wall and other games to occupy them. Sunday morning, bright and sunny and it's off to the sports arena, Patrick is off playing football and comes back with a winners medal, for us it's the Volleyball, we enter teams in the Open competition made up of Mick and June Hale, Jim Porter, Ron Howell, Mick Rigby and myself and the Women’s competition of June Hale, Mandy and Emily Rosamond, Cathy Howell and Jane Rigby. We got the first 2 games under way with both teams winning and then the drizzle started again. With both teams winning all of their games it was time for the final, the open saw us up against Notts which we won 2 sets to 0 (more Presidents Cup points), the ladies were up against South Essex, at 1 set each we're into the deciding game which is eventually won 27-25 to Midland (and more points). With winners medals around our necks we head back to the vans for our Chairman's reception which is the Chairman's way of saying thank you for attending the National and also taking part. Monday welcomed us with an overcast but dry morning, just as well as it was time for the over 35's football but instead of playing in the sports arena, it is moved to the main arena, no pressure then. So off we go, Mark "Leicestershire Chairman" Franklyn in goal, Ian "What do you mean I was late" Sutherland and Jim "Oh no not again" Porter in defence, Mick "The flying East Warwick" Rigby and myself up front with Ron "The Legend " Howell and Dave " Legsy" Bennet on the bench. Referee "Red Card Ron" is already for kick off, "only 2 teams so 6 minutes each way lads" he says, we take our positions against Notts and go hell for leather. Half time arrives and not too soon 0-0 and then the bombshell from the ref "Sorry lads 3 teams not 2". Gasping for the oxygen on come the subs, within minutes we're 1-0 up thanks to a cheeky chip from Ron. The game finishes 1-0 so we can now sit and watch Notts v South Essex which ends 2-0 to Notts. "Right lads, beat South Essex and the title is ours" I say, so off we go again. Ian puts a very hopeful ball up the line for me to chase, my brain says you can get it but the legs say otherwise, the ball is crossed to Mick and slots it onto the net 1-0, second half and seeing me get to the last one Ian sends yet another hopeful ball up the line, cross it again to Mick 2-0, ref blows full time, thank god for that. After 5 years of hurt being runners up we've done it "National 2015 Over 35's Winners". Well done lads, same time next year. The dog show follows so time to catch breath, the Sutherlands and Porters enter the arena with Holly, Amber, Ivy, Gem and Henry or is it Dave. A few rosettes are received, one of which I think was given to get a certain Mr Porter out of the arena. Time to head back to van then, not yet it's off to the Activities marquee to hear the results of photographic competition, Emily came runner up and I got highly commended (more points for the President Cup), we both receive a certificate off Caravan Club Vice Chairman Rodney Lambert and make our way back to the van for tea. After filling their bellies the kids are off to the MAYDAY Club again. Tuesday arrives all too soon and our final trip to the main arena for the Closing Ceremony, have we won the Presidents Cup, did we get enough points, no it goes to South Essex, well we did beat them in everything else. We say our goodbyes and leave the National for a quiet week running the rally at Carsington Water. From a small band of 5 vans plus assistance from the Leicesters, East Warwicks and South Lancs, we're crowned winners of the Open Volleyball, Ladies Volleyball, Over 35's Football. I would like to thank Mick & June Hale, Ron & Cathy Howell, Jim & Chris Porter, Ian & Doreen Sutherland, Mick & Jane Rigby, Dave & Sheila Bennet, Mark& Lynne Franklyn and of course Mandy, Emily & Patrick for taking part and supporting the Midland Centre at this year's National. I hope to see you all and a few more at the 2016 National at Weston Park. Jason Rosamond The Caravan Club National Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. Friday 22nd May This year’s national was almost as close as some midlands rallies and after taking the scenic route through Moreton in Marsh and Chipping Norton we arrived around mid day. The site was enormous and bathed in sunshine when we arrived, but after getting through the gate it took a further 10 minutes to arrive at our pitch. We were greeted and pitched by friendly Marshalls, although one did give us a chilling warning about the dogs as apparently any that roamed free and got too close to the deer may be shot by the gamekeepers. I thought that this was a bit harsh and suggested that maybe tranquilisers would be a better and less extreme option. Once on our spot we secured the dogs then took the opportunity to get the porch awning and windbreak up as we had plenty of good weather and time to do so. By Mid afternoon we were set up and decided to take the dogs for a walk. A dog patrol van passed us as we made our way to the central arena and I kept a watchful eye on it to make sure there were no guns pointing in our direction. We were about a 5 minute walk from the Centre which had all of the usual Marquees and many trade and accessory stalls to peruse. We had a quick look round and purchased a veranda pole from Isabella for our awning. They had some comfortable seats that I liked and would have bought but Doreen pointed out that our loft is full of ‘seats’ and we had two with us, so I postponed the purchase until a later date. We spent a further hour looking at the stalls and then returned to our van. The other Midland members were beginning to arrive and we saw Mick and June and Ron and Cathy as we got back to the lines. Mike and Jane Rigby were also with the Midlands and had been roped in to help with the sports. Jason and Mandy and Jim and Chris Porter arrived during the early evening and once everyone was set up we had a communal meal before relaxing with a few drinks. Saturday 23rd After a morning and early afternoon spent socialising and sorting out various teams for events we retired to the sports bar along with Jim and Chris. We were hoping to sit outside but as the weather was good all of the available seats were taken but there were a few tables free inside. We were glad of the seats and the dogs were quite happy to lie under the table while we waited for the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony took place in the arena and as is the practice in recent years we were told where next years national is to be. It was announced that Weston Park in Staffordshire is the venue and again this is another close site to the Midlands and hopefully will get a good attendance. Once Grenville had concluded proceedings we were joined by Jason and Mandy and Jane and Mike Rigby. We were going to represent the centre in the Darts competition but it was massively over subscribed and meant we would all be playing until midnight or later. Sunday 24th Today was spent at the sports arena, Doreen and I along with Patrick and Emily were in and out of the Lawn Darts competition within ten minutes, after coming up against a group of ringers from an opposing centre who were clearly former world champions at this sport. We then walked along to the Volleyball court where both the Mixed and Ladies teams were doing really well and winning their matches. The children’s races in the main arena followed a falconry and bird display and Patrick and Emily both did well in their events. The over 35’s football was postponed for the day so it meant we could return to the vans for our meals. We had the chairman’s gathering this evening and several guests from various centres joined us for a few nibbles and drinks to complete the day. Monday 25th The organisers put the football on in the main arena this year and the Midlands centre finally managed to secure the elusive first place after several years as runners up. We beat South Essex in the final game and were awarded the winners medals shortly afterwards. The football was followed by the dog show which saw one Midland member use underhand tactics to obtain a medal in the best 6 legs category. I was still in my football shorts and relied on Hollie’s finely crafted Sheltie paws to try and gain a medal but someone who will remain nameless adorned their legs with fishnet stockings and suspenders to detract from the fact that his short fat hairy legs would not cut any ice with a sane judge. To be fair the Dog show proved popular this year at the National and there were over a hundred dogs taking part with all classes having 20 – 30 dogs on show. The Midlands dogs did well and came back with 3 rosettes; our group got runners up in the best brace losing out to a pack of spaniels that even outnumbered our set of shelties. Henry got 2 rosettes one with Chris and the other with the nameless person from above. The Rosamund’s also had some success in the photographic competition getting a runner up and highly commended in two categories out of many that were of interest to budding David Bailey’s. There were plenty of food and drink stalls dotted around the marquees and arena. We took advantage of the pleasant weather to grab a tray or two of chips and a drink while we waited for the results of the competitions to be announced. There was also a Wine making competition which was of interest to the women in our group who would have gladly volunteered to judge the entries and I think they may push for that at next years event. The best national weather for many years, continued to favour us and we spent the afternoon relaxing outside the vans before lighting up the barbecues to cook another communal meal later on. Tuesday 26th Doreen finally relented and said I could have the Isabella seats if I wanted them knowing full well that the stalls were all closed today, I think she had a fright when the Isabella stand was still in the process of packing away when we got to the centre but the moment had gone so I declined the purchase until next year. We attended the awards ceremony and the Midlands were in with a chance of winning the Presidents cup, a prize given to the centre with the most points gained throughout the event. Unfortunately despite winning three major competitions and many other successes we lost out to South Essex who fielded teams in every event and gained extra points for that, well done to them and also all of the competitors who took part to make it a fun event. Ian Sutherland Nether Whitaker Martyn and Andy’s 60th Friday it came as a surprise to me that two of our committee members were celebrating their 60th as they certainly don’t look that old to me, probably as I am not many years away from that milestone myself. Also Martyn and Andy are always fairly active at major rallies, decorating halls and setting up events for others to enjoy so maybe this helps keep them young. Doreen and I took our van along to Nether Whitacre on Friday but work and other commitments meant that we did not attend the social on Friday. The rest of the ralliers enjoyed tea and Coffee and a chat in the hall. Saturday We returned to the rally at Lunchtime on Saturday and walked along to the pub with Jim and Chris and the Dogs. We walked back to the site after a not too great meal, due mainly to poor service and communication between the staff and while my mixed grill contained no steak or chicken which was advertised on the menu at least Jim had 2 steaks on his to make up for his lack of chicken. We managed to order a jacket potato which came as chips and when questioned, the waitress stated that they did not do Jacket potatoes. Perhaps they should let the staff behind the bar know as they were happy to let us order one. The weather was fantastic due again to yours truly who decided that we never use seats at Nether Whitacre so they had been left at home. Many were sitting out enjoying the afternoon sunshine and after a couple of hours sitting on our step and a rickety fishing stool which I keep in the wet locker, we returned to the van to get ready for the evening’s social. Once again Troubadour entertained us with two sets of classy cover versions stretching from the sixties to modern day anthems. They had a guest drummer assist them when William Downs took hold of the sticks for one song and he coped admirably with the task not missing a beat. Jayne assisted by family and friends provided a lovely buffet for us during the break and we had sandwiches Cakes and nibbles to keep us going through the rest of the night. Again Doreen was impressed as there were gluten free options which our hosts had specially provided and she most grateful to them. Troubadour returned to complete their second set and many were up on the dance floor as particular favourites were played and enjoyed. After a couple of encores, the band concluded their sets and we finished off the night with a few drinks and a chat. Sunday The good weather continued on Sunday and no one seemed in a particular rush to get away, most drifted off well after flag had finished. Congratulations to Andy and Martyn and well done to the stewards, helpers and the band for another excellent rally. Inter centres rally Coalville Rugby club After being invited by the Notts, Derby and Leicester centres to take part in this annual event the Midlands Centre took a small contingent to Coalville managing 8 vans plus a few vans from our friends in the East Warwicks centre which enabled us to participate in nearly all of the events. The weather was fine when we set off but shortly after arriving the rain set in. Luckily this did not hinder our enjoyment and we attended the sports meeting on the night to enter teams for various events which began on Saturday. The rain continued through the night and into most of Saturday. Fortunately it was fairly light for most of the day and the games went ahead with Petanque, Volleyball, Netball and Football being played in a friendly manner and getting many members involved. Our ladies were particularly good and won all three of their Volleyball matches to take the title; they also had wins at Netball and finished runners up to the Nottinghamshire centre to complete a fun and fairly successful afternoon. Saturday afternoon saw a host of races for the juniors from all ages and the weather improved as that went on. It was great to see very young and not so young children enjoying the events and it was well supported. The Midlands even managed to put a team together for the tug of war with help from Mike Rigby and a Notts member filling the vacant slots. We managed to hold the other teams for a while but their experience and better suited kit and boots helped to sway the pulls their way in the end, but at least we took part and gave them some extra competition. It was also very enjoyable. An evening barbecue and communal meal was enjoyed along with a few drinks to relax the muscles in preparation for tomorrow’s exertions. Sunday kicked off with the over 35’s football. We played Derby in the first game and I was sceptical that they were all over 35 as some looked much younger. After chasing round for 16 minutes we lost 1-0 to Derbyshire then had to play the Notts centre straight afterwards. A credible 1-1 draw followed by Derby beating Notts in a grudge match meant that we finished equal runners up with the Notts centre. The awards ceremony took place and although we were small in numbers we scored a good amount of points and were not too far behind the other centres with Nottinghamshire being crowned as the overall winners. The event was good fun and although there were many competitions to take part in it was also enjoyable being a spectator and supporting our centre. There was hot food served all day on Saturday and a social in the Marquee on the night. Many non sporting members from various centres attended and all seemed to enjoy the rally. The 45 minute return journey back home was less than most of the Midland centre venues that we attend and hopefully the Derbyshire centre will pick a site which is not too far next year as this is one rally that deserves to be given a chance by the Midland members, especially if you have got children who like running around, Ian Sutherland Inter centres rally Coalville Rugby club Chris and I arrived at the Coalville Rugby Club after a reasonable journey but we had to take a slight detour through the village and a quick turn round at a crossroads due to missing the well signed entrance. After a lovely meal prepared by Mandy we attended the Sports Officers meeting. Jason entered us into everything including the tug of war, against what turned out to be two fully kitted out professional teams. Saturday morning saw us at the Sports field for, believe it or not, 10 am!!! Fortunately, there were sausage and bacon baps on tap, along with gallons of tea and coffee available from the marquees. The ladies won their three games of volleyball against the Notts, Derby's and Leicester's. In the afternoon, there were the kids sports competitions and they all made a good show of themselves with a number of wins and places in the various races. All the kids who took part received sweets with the winners, runners up and third place receiving a plaque to remember the day. The tug of war took place after the kids’ sports and we were the strongest team, holding up the other two teams in the league but hey we took part. In the evening, we got together for a meal, a chin wag and a massage of tired muscles. Sunday morning was another early start with baps and tea. The over thirty fives football was on the agenda this morning. We were unable to repeat our feats at the national and came in the silver position rather than gold, but hey we again took part. There were only 8 vans, if you include the Rigbys but we gave a good account of ourselves none the less. We all enjoyed ourselves and look forward to taking part next year at the rally hosted by the Derby's. Chris and Jim Porter. Central Region AGM Midland Centre members as you will be aware the Central Region AGM is to be held at Stratford Racecourse during the weekend of the 27th to the 29th of November. We look forward to playing for the Midland Centre again in the future. Regards Mike Downs – Troubadour A Word from Your Rally Secretary Rally Book Competition. We are again holding a competition to find a picture for the cover of the 2016 Rally Book. There is no theme this year so the picture can consist of anything. All entries can be submitted to the Rally Secretary by email or disc at any time throughout the year up to the Stewards Meet. Pictures should be in Portrait format. Please – no close up pictures of humans. The prize will be a free weekend rally from next years programme. Additionally, all Rally Book covers are judged by the Caravan Club and a prize will be awarded to the centre with the best cover chosen by their judges. A further prize will be awarded should the Midland Centre win this competition. Andy Reynolds. MCCC Rally Secretary. The Gate Inn Cancelled Rally 29 at the Gate Inn, 24th – 26th July has now been cancelled due to lack of Stewards. Holiday Rally Change There has been a change of stewards at the Weymouth Holiday rally in August, Mike and Beth Downs are now running it with Jason and Kelly Atkinson. Christmas Rally Would any members be prepared to run the Christmas Rally next year as this year might be the last run by our current stewards? Derek and Lin Moseley would be prepared to guide anyone who is interested on taking this rally on. New Midlands Fire Marshal The Midlands have recruited a new fire marshal to help keep us all safe in our vans on the rally field. Young Oliver Atkinson is making doubly sure that there will be no problems on his watch. Security at the National This year’s national saw an increase in security with regular flyovers to help stamp out any unruly behaviour. It seemed to be permanently circling the Midland lines, obviously having been tipped off by nearby centres that we could be a problem in that area. Tote Winners .
