A Letter from Pastor Sarah Stobie
Dear Trinity family,
It is with great difficulty that I write this announcement to you. I have accepted a new call as
Pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Blue Bell is just
north of Philadelphia, and the church is within the village of Center Square. St. John is a
historic church, organized in 1769, with a rich German-Lutheran tradition, a cemetery, and a
pre-school.
My time at Trinity has been so rich—I have grown here as a child of God, I have served here
as faithfully as I could, and I feel that our youth and family ministries have never been stronger.
Trinity is blessed with active youth and families, and this will surely only continue in the
future! I also know there are wonderful leaders and mentors here with our youth; God’s plan
will continue to thrive at Trinity and I am confident that things will continue to expand and
grow in my absence. I deeply love the youth and children here at Trinity, and I will miss them
more than I can express. I will also miss my adult Bible studies, our gifted Stephen Ministers,
JOYful Days, worshipping with you all every Sunday, and sharing a good laugh. I have been
blessed, truly, these past nine years. It has been a privilege serving with you.
Pete and I both immediately felt called to serve in Pennsylvania after our visits there this spring. It was a bittersweet realization.
While we have loved our time at Trinity and I have loved being your pastor for five years, I felt that God was calling me to serve in
a new, exciting way. Not too long ago, we had never heard of Blue Bell—now, we will be calling it our new home. Trusting in God’s
plan for me, we boldly go there so that I may answer God’s call in a new setting. I ask for your prayers for me, for Pete and our
family as we transition into our new ministry site. Trinity will certainly be in our prayers, too.
My plan is to complete my Triple Crown (yes, I went there!) with our youth this summer—Mission Trip, National Gathering and
Stony Lake Lutheran Camp. My last Sunday at Trinity will be August 2, and following the two worship services, I am told we will
have a wonderful party with my favorite food—chocolate. Please do plan on joining me, the girls and Pete!
I give my sincere gratitude to the members of Trinity, and to Pastor Bob, our wonderful staff, and the many special friends I have
made along the way. God surely placed me here for a reason, I always knew that, and now I trust in God again with his Call.
Blessings to you all,
Pastor Sarah

Please join us when the people of Trinity gather for one combined worship
service at Ada Township Park at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 26! A brief order of
worship will include the children of the Vacation Bible School leading us in
story and song, and we will conclude with Holy Communion.
Following the service, you are invited to stay for a congregational picnic! Be
sure to bring your own lawn chairs and/or blanket, beverages and table service
and a dish to share.
We will enjoy a picnic potluck in the park and the goodness of summertime in
an outdoor setting. It will be an opportunity to meet other people from Trinity
who worship at a different time than you do.
There will be no worship service on site at Trinity on July 26. All are invited
to attend the single 10 a.m. service in Ada Township Park located on the
corner of Buttrick Avenue and Grand River Drive. In the case of rain, we will

Message from Pastor Bob Linstrom
Planting Trees Under Whose Shade
You Do Not Expect to Sit
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
Nelson Henderson
Nelson Henderson, a second generation farmer in the Swan River Valley region of
Manitoba, Canada, is revered for the little bit of wisdom printed above. It’s a variant
on an older snippet of Greek wisdom, and others throughout the ages have sought to
capture the sentiment. It evokes the simple wisdom of seasoned farmer philosophers
and of authors of proverbs, of reflective elders and of caretakers of the earth. In our
faith heritage, called to be stewards on life’s journey, we are all called to “plant trees”
for the sheer joy of the planting, joining in the work of our Creator, and not for some personal benefit. In so doing we are engaged in
something bigger than ourselves. Our efforts become something of a true gift, rich in grace, when we give of ourselves without
expectation of immediate gratification, return or payback.
As I share this reflection with the people of Trinity, I am drawn to reflect on the “tree planting” ministry of Trinity’s Associate Pastor
Sarah Stobie. Pastor Sarah’s nine years caring for the youth and family ministry of this parish, along with her five years caring for the
breadth of the ministry in this place and among this people as an ordained pastor, has been a ministry of planting seeds and nurturing
growth in faith formation. She has shared her love of Jesus, her commitment to children and teens, her rich heritage as a Lutheranflavored pastor and disciple, her sincere faith, her love of liturgy and the privilege of preaching, and her infectious laughter and joy on
life’s journey. Pastor Sarah has also generously shared her family through her partner Pete and his full engagement with the people of
Trinity and through her daughters Amy and Lucy, who spent their teenage years growing up as active members of this congregation.
The Stobie family has planted many “trees” in our faith community, and many of them will continue to grow and mature as Pastor
Sarah and Pete make their move to eastern Pennsylvania later this summer.
There will be genuine grief in Pastor Sarah’s departure among those who knew her well, and the whole of the Trinity congregation
will certainly mark the conclusion of a vital chapter of ministry as she and Pete engage a new congregational community at St. John
Lutheran Church in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Trinity has had a gracious gift in the ministry of Pastor Sarah, and it is our privilege to
release her now to bring that gift to a sister congregation some 700 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. Our sadness is indeed mixed with
joy as we commend our sister in Christ to the next chapter of her ordained ministry among the people of St. John parish.
Let us be reminded to care well for the seeds that Pastor Sarah and her family have planted in their years among the people of Trinity.
I pray that many of those seeds will continue to grow into great shade trees, that many will bear fruit for years to come, and that all
who have shared ministry with Pastor Sarah will seek to nurture that growth, celebrating the vitality of the partnership we’ve enjoyed
with Pastor Sarah and her family.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Bob Linstrom

Youth and Family Ministry
This summer, many of Trinity’s children, youth and adults will be with Pastor Sarah in a

thoughts and prayers as they travel.
Pastor Sarah’s “Triple Crown” events include:

Mission Trip: 30 high school youth and four adult chaperones leave June 27 for an eightday trip to Keansburg, New Jersey. The people there continue to struggle with the effects
of Hurricane Sandy. For details about the trip and a list of participants, please see the
June edition of the Messenger.

people of Trinity following worship on Sunday, August 2, Pastor Sarah’s
last Sunday serving as the Associate Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church.

. . . that the first meeting of the Trinity Building Committee with architects from Progressive AE
is scheduled for June 30? Following the 98% vote in favor of contracting services with
Progressive AE and with church capital campaign company Walsh and Associates on May 17,
architectural work will begin this summer to assess our facilities and begin moving toward the
development of a Master Plan and Conceptual Design for a future building project. Watch for
regular updates in the months ahead and for the scheduling of a congregational workshop to
discern the hopes and dreams of our people for the care and development of the facilities that
house our mission.
. . . that we could use a couple of willing bakers to join the Trinity bread bakers? Most of our
bakers serve for a month at a time and provide the loaves of bread used for Holy Communion at
Trinity. If you are willing to bake, or to learn to bake, communion bread for our life together in
worship, please contact the church office at 616-949-2510 ext. 10.
Many thanks to our 2014-2015 bread bakers: Cindy Zientarski, Elizabeth Derbin, Bev Heyne,
Nadene Delana, Sue Bakkila and her son Garrett, Rebecca Linstrom, Kris Fox, Dawn
Brackmann, Marcia Schaner, Jan Jacobson, Kathy Young, and David and Nancy Morrison.
. . . that during July and August we continue to worship on Sundays at 9 a.m. for the Rejoice
contemporary worship service and at 10:30 a.m. for the traditional worship service? We
return to the four service Sunday worship schedule on September 13.
. . that the inaugural May 30 Men’s Breakfast turned out 56 men of our congregation for a hearty
breakfast, a brief Bible study and an address by Mayor George Heartwell? A survey was also
received to discern the direction for our new men’s ministry at Trinity. Watch for news of
upcoming events for the Trinity men’s ministry!
. . . that Pastor Linstrom is hoping to hear from Trinity parents who are interested in a brief class
to prepare young children for Holy Communion. Tr inity is a congr egation that welcomes all
of the baptized, including young children, to participate in the Lord’s Supper, and a wonderful,
simple curriculum entitled “A Place for You” provides a meaningful introduction to Holy
Communion for young children. Last year some parents provided that preparation at home with
their own children and others attended a brief class with their children and the pastors followed
by bread baking in the church kitchen. The bread the children baked (with a bit of help) was
shared the next Sunday in worship.
If you are interested in more information about Holy Communion with young children, contact
the church office at 616-949-2510 ext. 10.
. . . that a new Building Endowment Fund has been established after receiving an anonymous
seed gift of $5000 to launch this fund? The Council endorsed the development of a Building
Endowment Fund, with eventual distributions to care for extra budgetary facilities related
projects, to function alongside the existing Mission Endowment Fund, which provides annual
distributions to care for mission work beyond the operational budget of the congregation. It has
been proposed that the Building Endowment Fund will begin annual distributions after the fund
has achieved a balance of $100,000. Currently the Mission Endowment Fund has a balance of
$425,723.

Michigan Blood will be here on Monday, July 27, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. for our summer blood
drive. Please call Susan Babin at 616-272-3902 or email [email protected] to schedule an
appointment. Childcare is provided.
People who can donate from 2 to 4 p.m. are especially needed as are volunteers to bake cookies.
If you plan to donate, take extra care to eat a protein-rich diet several days in advance.
Remember, the need is constant. Give if you can!
Buy a Book of Bus Tickets!
You are invited to support our community’s most vulnerable members
by purchasing bus tickets to be distributed to community organizations
including Dégagé Ministries, Family Promise (IHN) and Lutheran
Social Services. Many area residents do not have cars and rely upon
public transportation to get to job interviews, work, grocery stores and
appointments. Bus tickets can provide stability for individuals and
families who are struggling.
Please consider supporting this ministry by purchasing one or more
packs of bus tickets. A pack of 10 tickets is $11.50.
Please place your donation in the offering plate on Sunday or drop it off
in the Church Office. Make checks payable to Trinity Lutheran Church
with “bus tickets” on the memo line. We will collect for this special
program through the end of August.

Trinity Hiring Part-Time Finance Assistant
Trinity Lutheran Church has an opportunity for a Part-Time Finance Assistant to join
our staff. The person in this role will have the responsibility for maintaining the
operational accounting records. Weekly tasks may include: processing and recording
the offerings, preparing and making the bank deposit, processing payables and
reconciling accounts. The successful candidate will utilize their knowledge of general
accounting principles and payroll and tax laws as they will be responsible for processing
payroll and associated taxes, the quarterly and annual payroll tax reporting, and
preparing the annual non-profit renewal.
Working knowledge of QuickBooks and Microsoft Office software will be instrumental
to the selected candidate’s success in this role. Additionally, the incumbent must be able
to prioritize their workload so that tasks are completed in a timely manner with minimal
supervision.
We are requesting that candidates have a minimum 3 years work experience coupled
with at minimum of an Associates Degree in accounting or related field.
If you are an organized individual and have a proven record of working well with
others, and want to join our staff, please submit your résumé. Perhaps you know
someone outside of your church family who might be qualified and interested in the
position. Please encourage them to apply as well.
All inquiries and résumés should be submitted to: [email protected].
