EOM Ampy Reg Serves with a Smile
“Do I deserve this?” asked a truly
stunned Ampy Reg upon being named
the QMC October Employee of the
Month. Ampy is a food service worker
in the Harkness Dining Room.
Ampy worked in catering in the private sector before coming to Queen’s almost 20 years ago. “My timing was very
good–I was lucky,” recalled Ampy. “There
was an opening in the Tower kitchen
when I applied and I got a job right away.”
She was moved to the dining room service line about four or five years ago.
“She’s our mama! Everybody calls
her that,” said Alice Marquez, manager, Patient Services, Food & Nutrition Services. “And everybody listens
to her–the cooks, all of us.”
Two of Ampy’s three real children were
on hand to celebrate their mother’s moment of glory. “Stop rolling your eyes
ma, we’re trying to take pictures here,”
chided her daughter Grace Sipin. “But
the eye rolling is automatic,” Ampy shot
back, “cannot help!” Everyone around
admitted that was true, adding, “And
pinching. She likes to pinch–look out!”
Another coworker tossed in, “Her favorite expression is, ‘excuse me?,’ and we all
know what she means when she says it.”
The crowd all laughed good naturedly
as they piled the diminutive Ampy with
lei, even one made out of dollar bills
from Fermin Cainglit (see photo above).
“She loves to go shopping, that we all
know,” was heard from the group.
Ampy’s dining room customers, including, QHS/QMC president Art Ushijima, take note of Ampy’s bright smile
and personal daily greeting. She is usually on the breakfast line, and nominators commented that her cheerful attitude always sets them up for a great
day. “Calling them by name makes everyone feel special,” Ampy explained,
“It makes them happy.”

at home would be the last thing Ampy
ever wants to do, but siblings Grace
and Gene Ramil told the Print Connection, “Mom’s omelet is the best thing
ever! It’s so big you can’t even eat it all.”
Both of them work nights, so during
the week, family time together occurs
mostly during the daily drive to work
from their home in Waipahu. “I don’t
drive; they bring me everyday,” Ampy
said. “That’s when we get a chance to
talk story, to connect. And then on the
weekend, they take me to Pearlridge!”
“All she talks about is her job,” Gene
grumbled half-heartedly. “She says she
never wants to retire.”

“Why do I want to retire?” Ampy
asked with alarm. “I love my job. All
three of my kids are grown and I have
no grandchildren. I want to stay here.”
She looked around the Food & Nutrition Services conference room with contentment. “I always tell my children, ‘you
are making your own life.’’’ It’s simple advice, sincerely spoken by a mother to all.

Respiratory Care Crosses Service Lines
Submitted by Carol Agard, RRT
Manager, RCS/Neurodx
In October of each year, Queen’s
celebrates National Respiratory Care
Week along with other respiratory departments across the country. This is
a time we recognize all of the dedicated respiratory staff for their significant contributions to evidence-based
practice, improved patient safety, and
outcomes. This year, Queen’s again
received an award from the American
Association for Respiratory Care for
providing quality respiratory services
to patients and the community.
Different from a nursing unit or
from other ancillary services, Respiratory Care Services treats over 150
patients a day in over 30 areas of the
hospital 24 hours a day. Respiratory
Care Practitioners (RCP) care for patients in the ICUs, Emergency room,
PT Month Brings
Recognition Thru Fun
The National Physical Therapy Month
theme was “Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life.” Queen’s PTs brought the
theme to life through fun. Last week,
they invited everyone to participate in
a friendly competition at the Harkness
Courtyard. Teams of two faced off in
events testing balance, coordination,
puzzle solving (see photo below right), accuracy, and speed. Pauahi 4’s team won
the grand prize: a pizza party for their
general nursing units, and in the operating room during certain types of
surgery. They also respond to all Code
Blue calls, Trauma Call, and Rapid Response Team Calls. In addition, RCPs
perform the majority of arterial blood
gases in the hospital.
RCPs have supported ongoing projects; been involved with community
education; and helped license the pracunit. There were also individual, oneminute contests for the Hula Hoop (Maile
Sandoval of Pauahi 4 won with 111 rotations); push ups (Andy Mounthongdy did
57); stack attack (Marley Queja, in 35
seconds); and jump rope (Steven Lum,
137). Far away but not forgotten are the
PTs at the Queen’s Health Care CentersHawai‘i Kai (see photo left): Left to right

tice of respiratory care in Hawai‘i. Some
of the most notable achievements are:
• Over a six year period, over 1,400
patients avoided intubation with the
use of noninvasive ventilation.
• Kept moms and babies together
through the introduction of the high
flow nasal cannula, which has avoided the transfer of over 115 neonates
over a two year period.
• In 2009, the RCPs were involved with
over 3,075 transports of critically ill
patients for diagnostic procedures
without incident or loss of airway.
Not only are RCPs BLS (Basic Life
Support), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation
Program), and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) trained, many are instructors. Two of the three QMC NRP
instructors are RCPs. They are also involved in teaching and training physicians, nurses, and students, as well as
number of ICU Classes.
To provide all of these services without doubling the staff, RCPs utilize patient driven respiratory protocols which
demand strong clinical assessment
skills that support evidence-based therapy. Therefore, only necessary therapy
is delivered, ensuring that RCPs are
available to perform timely and critical
respiratory interventions that positively impact patient outcomes.
