ANNUAL MEETING
MARCH 25, 2015
P
lease plan to join us on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the
Superstition Center at Mountainbrook Village. As is usual, our
evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with wine and catered dinner, plenty
of visiting and also the fun ‘wine contest’! While it is a ‘requirement’
to have an Annual Meeting, it is also a wonderful time to visit, meet
new members and elect new Board Members. We have planned special
musical entertainment by Zack and Jake Wilson, members of the
Wilson Family String Band who frequently perform at Barleen’s
Arizona Opry. They are also students at the Sonoran Desert Charter
School whose students are regular guests at our Friday Residency
programs. Their picture with Carpe Diem’s Korine Fujiwara, was
featured in our February Newsletter.
A part of the evening we all enjoy is meeting the students whose
work is being recognized as part of our Student Art Project. This year
Council members worked with students at the St. Charles Mission
School on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, Apache Junction’s Four
Peaks Elementary School and the Sonoran Desert Charter School in
Gold Canyon. All of the students worked on the same ‘theme’ so it will
be enjoyable to see their progression. (See the accompanying article in
the Newsletter).
The Annual Meeting is also the time when
is presented to an Arts Council member who exemplifies the
mission: “Advancing the Arts in the Superstitions”. This person is
selected because of their involvement in supporting and advancing the
arts in the Gold Canyon area and their support and dedication to the
Arts Council. Previous recipients of this award, meet together to select
this year’s recipient.
Mark your calendars and join us. I look forward to seeing you on
the 25th!
ANNUAL MEETING – MARCH 25, 2015 - 6-8PM
Our Annual Meeting will be held in the Superstition Room at Mountainbrook on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. This is a ‘business meeting’, but
also a time for us to eat a meal together and enjoy each other’s company. The official reason for meeting is to approve the 2015-2016 Budget
and elect new Board Members. It is also the unveiling of our Kukuk Award given to an individual who as a Council member has demonstrated
an exceptional commitment and contribution to the Council. We also enjoy the artistic efforts of students from those schools who participate in
our Student Art Project. This year we have two Board of Director positions to fill. Our Nominating Chair is former President, Roberta Russell.
She works with a committee to select individuals who are willing to contribute their time and talent to the success of the Board. Board
membership has its privileges (you get your picture in the Newsletter –whoopee) but most importantly you have the opportunity to give ideas
and efforts that contribute to our continued success. If you would like to know more about Board Member responsibilities, please contact me.

Arts Festival - Prior to our regular Board Meeting on February 12, 2015 chairs
of the various Arts Festival Committee Chairs along with Board Members met to
‘debrief’ the Festival. It was a very refreshing discussion with minor suggestions for
improvement, but the overall sense was that it went very well. The artists for the most
part seemed pleased with their sales, the parking was handled smoothly and while our
total numbers were less than last year, it allowed our visitors to see and visit with the
artists more comfortably. Of course, the musical entertainment presented throughout
the day was very well received with ‘standing room’ only for several of the performances.
Harp Fusion and After Parties - we were very pleased with the attendance for
Harp Fusion and received many congratulations on presenting such a talented and
enjoyable performance. The After Party to which all in attendance were invited was
well received as well. In honor of ‘Valentine’s Day’, it also allowed for guests and
members to meet the artists who may not be able to attend our regular ‘private’ home
gatherings.
You have noticed that we using our ‘e-blast’ capability to notify our members when and
where upcoming After Parties will be held. We feel that it eliminates the need to pick
up a ticket at Canyon Rose Storage. More of our members may not find it convenient
to go there, so this arrangement allows them to just print off or copy the directions and
join us for an enjoyable time.
Budget - Sandy Wash, Treasurer, Chuck Cuffaro, Vice President, Jack Kukuk,
Artistic Director and I met to create the budget for our 2015-2016 year. The Board at
the February meeting motioned to present it at the Annual Meeting for adoption.
Grant Submittals - this is the time of year when grants are submitted to the
Arizona Commission on the Arts, and WESTAF. WESTAF helps support our Canyon
Sounds Programs to area schools, especially in underserved areas. Follow-up data on
attendance and other features are needed by them prior to our receiving their grant.

The Resplendent Quetzal,
Central America’s Bird of
Liberty
by Chuck Cuffaro
A beautiful bird, the
Resplendent Quetzal, inhabits the
forests of Southern Mexico and
Guatemala. With an iridescent
green-gold plume, a scarlet chest,
and a beautiful 15 inch tail streamer
equal to its body length, it is so
beloved that it is the Guatemalan
national bird, the name of their currency (the
quetzal), and its image is on their flag and coat of
arms.
For the Aztecs, this glorious bird in flight was
their “god of the air” and they named it “quetzalli”
meaning “tall upstanding plume”.
Like our Bald Eagle, the Quetzal is also a
symbol of liberty and freedom because it was rumored
that it could not be held long in captivity as it would
end its own life soon after being captured. Mayan
legend claims that the Quetzal once sang beautifully
before the Spanish conquest, but it has been silent
ever since, and will only sing again when the land is
truly free.
A solitary bird and monogamous breeder of
the trogan family, it became an endangered species
because great numbers were killed, not for food, but
for taxidermy and display, an unfortunate tribute to
its beauty. Today, it is protected, but classified as
near threatened due to loss of habitat.
From the state of Veracruz, Mexico, the
Quetzal is in the name of a world renowned dance
troupe, “Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli de Veracruz”.
They will dance with the beauty and freedom of their
namesake at the Gold Canyon Methodist Church at
7:30 pm on Friday, March 27, 2015; the spectacular
season finale of GCAC’s Canyon Sounds Artist Series.

The Gold Canyon Arts Council presents
"Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli de Veracruz"
Friday, March 27, 2015, 7:30 pm
Venue: Gold Canyon United Methodist Church
6640 S Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon, AZ
Mark your calendars for “Fiesta Mexico”, a
spectacular performance by world renowned
dance troupe, “Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli de
Veracruz”. Backed by wonderful musicians, they
recreate the dances and music of several regional
festivals across Mexico. Fiestas featured will be
from the states of Guerrero, Nayarit, Michoacan,
Nuevo Leon, and the group’s home state of
Veracruz.
While recreating the pageantry, spectacle, and
color of each fiesta, the choreography of each
dance represents a unique facet of life, culture,
history, or nature. The rhythms and music are a
synthesis of Spanish, European, Indigenous, and
Afro-Caribbean influences.
The troupe is named after the “Quetzal”, a
splendid regional bird of southern Mexico, and
with costumes that echo the bird’s plumage; they
tap their heels, twirl their skirts, and thoroughly
entertain an audience. One of their best known
performances is “La Bamba”, originally a folk song, then converted to a dance, and later made famous by Ritchie Valen’s
1958 adaptation which became a top 40 hit in the U.S.
“Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli” was founded in 1985 by maestro Hugo Betancourt after spending years learning the artistry
of dance and passion for these traditions. Since 1986, the dance company has been the official representatives for the
Secretary of Tourism and Economic Development for the State
of Veracruz, giving hundreds of performances across the
world.
Purchase advance adult tickets for $25, and students for $5 at
Canyon Rose Storage, 6405 S. Kings Ranch Rd., Gold Canyon,
and at the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce office on
the Apache Trail. Adult tickets at the door are $30. Also, order
via PayPal on our Canyon Sounds website
http://www.gcac1.com/cynsnds.html.
The Gold Canyon Arts Council promotes the performing and
visual arts through its Canyon Sounds Artist Series. More
about the organization can be found at www.gcac1.com. The
Council is supported in part by grants from the Arizona Commission
on the Arts, Western States Arts Federation, the National Endowment
for the Arts, local corporations, and businesses.

The Arts Council Meets the Community
by Barb O’Brien
The Gold Canyon Arts Council has expanded our outreach opportunities at local marketing events
during this 2014-2015 concert season. Our new blue tablecloth with our logo and the Canyon
Sounds display board make for an attractive presentation. We were represented at the Apache
Junction Health and Wellness Fair on November 15th which was held at the Multi-Generational
Center in Apache Junction. Carl
Hillmer reported there were many
people he met who were not aware
of our organization, concerts and
Residency programs, but who
stopped by to ask questions and
pick up brochures. Some other
marketing opportunities were The
Montesa Expo which was held on
January 29th, the Apache Junction
Chamber of Commerce Business
Fair at the Apache Junction High
School on January 31st, and the
Gold Canyon Business Fair at
Mountainbrook
Village’s
Superstition Center on February
21st. Each of these events offered another opportunity to reach out to the community with a
one-on-one approach and raise awareness of our Canyon Sounds concert series with its outreach
programs, the annual festival and, of course, our membership options and benefits. Our president,
Carole Lindeman, also spoke about the Gold Canyon Arts Council at the Mountainbrook Village’s
new resident Welcome Breakfast held on February 25th . Our attendance at these events has not only
proven to be valuable in terms of membership growth and ticket sales, but we also found it rewarding
to receive positive remarks from people who are already attending our concerts and appreciate all
that we do for the community.

ach year at our Annual Meeting, students from participating
schools are recognized by our membership. Council members,
Jeff Danford, Gail McFarland, Kathy Mitchell and Mary
Stockrocki co-ordinate this program. Mary
and Kathy worked with fifth and sixth grade
students at the St. Charles Mission School
on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Jeff
and Gail selected third and fourth grade
students at Four Peaks Elementary School in
Apache Junction. New this year is the
involvement of Gold Canyon’s Sonoran
Desert Charter School’s middle grade
students under the leadership of Shawn
Dalman.
All of the students created art designs
and writing around the theme “My Favorite Place”. They receive an 11
x 17 piece of stock with a margin (border) around for their art
expression and a place for their writing in the center. They were
instructed to select a place to which they’ve actually been and could
include something they’ve done alone, a hobby or something that
brought them pleasure. Their design could go in any direction around
the sheet and could be presented in either portrait or landscape
orientation. Each student was given colored pencils, crayons and
markers with which to
design.
Our Council
members work with the
students on the ‘art’ part
of the project while the
teachers are involved
with the writing that
describes or illuminates
their design. What is a
little different this year
is that the varied ages of
students are all working
on the same theme.
Selected pieces, based upon their use of space and shapes and color, will
be displayed at the Annual Meeting and the students invited to attend. It will be enjoyable to see the progression
of ideas and expression as the students mature.

Volunteers of the Month
John and Kathy Mitchell
A
pleasure to visit with Kathy and John Mitchell, Council members since 2007. Many of us are
transplanted from other ‘climes’, but John and Kathy are different. John is third generation Arizona
and Kathy moved with her family from Iowa when she started kindergarten. They both attended West
Phoenix High School and met in Chemistry class.
And, the
is still there! They married at ages
nineteen and twenty-one and while finishing their
college degrees at ASU, were blessed with two
children. Oh to be young!
John, who has played the violin and viola
since he was seven, played part time with the Phoenix
Symphony. Kathy earned a degree in Fine Arts but
returned to school for her teaching degree. They
moved to New Mexico and taught at the LagunaAcoma Indian High School for five years during
which time they both earned their Master’s degrees
at the University of New Mexico. These ‘Arizona kids’
then took teaching positions with the Department of
Defense and taught in Germany from 1981 thru
2006. Kathy taught Art and Social Studies and John,
math. They began returning to Arizona during their
summers and when they retired in 2006, built their
home in Gold Canyon. Now, they return to Germany
for their summers.
As you may guess, they are dedicated Arts
Council members.
John is involved with our
Residency programs and has worked with Bob
Homann and Allen Fry on the Arts Festival. He still
enjoys playing his violin with various music
ensembles. Kathy is a member of the Artists of the
Superstitions and her original art piece was selected as our limited edition 2012 Canyon Arts Festival poster.
She is also involved with our Student Art Project. She just returned from the San Carlos Apache Reservation
where she and Mary Stockrocki worked with fifth and sixth grade students. (See the article elsewhere in the
Newsletter).
We truly appreciate your commitment to the community and especially the Arts Council!
