1980 Mustard FJ40
The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is pretty much like it was the day it left the dealership. It’s
undergone an extensive restoration from top to bottom. It’s totally STOCK and rides and drives as
good as any FJ I have ever owned. I actually purchased it for myself and I’m enjoying driving it.
What follows is a partial list of the work that was completed on the truck.
Jan. 1980 FJ40 – Restoration Summary – Oct 2011
Driveline:
Replaced front axle seals and 1 set of wheel bearings – repacked all bearings and birfields.
Replaced rear pinion seal and parking brake output seal. New Daystar poly spring shackle
bushings through – all eye and shackle ends. All emission control equipment intact and
apparently functional. Chrome tubular header installed on engine – 2.5” exhaust throughout.
Replaced front output seal (xfer case), shifter nose cone dust boot, xfer case oil. 5 disk brakestyle OEM rims and 235-75-15 Michelin radials and spare. Rancho add-a-leaf installed on driver’s
side rear spring to combat the Land Cruiser lean. KYB front shocks, Rancho 5000 rear shocks.
Rear driveshaft balanced, changed rear diff oil, replaced rear diff cover gasket
Engine Compartment:
Replaced upper radiator hose and radiator cap. Drilled, tapped, and plugged the oil galley by the
#5 cylinder in the head. Tested oil pressure – 60 cold, 42 hot (on mechanical gauge). New spark
plugs (Toyota) and wiper blades, air filter, and recent oil/filter change. Engine or head has been
rebuilt (has tamper-seal on the head installed by rebuilder). Compression at 7000’ tested at: 120,
115, 117, 115, 119, 119. (Indicated values are 21% lower due to elevation – sea-level-corrected
values would be approx: 145, 139, 142, 139, 144, 144)
Interior:
New front SOR seat covers + metal seatbacks were sandblasted and powder coated. Seat foam
was in excellent condition. Correct 1980 rear heater installed with re-soldered/tested heater core,
and painted satin black. Correct 1980 plastic center console installed. A new CCoT sewn
headliner was installed. AM/FM FJ-60 Toyota radio installed w/factory speaker. All correct jack
parts intact, most of toolkit intact in a Toyota tool bag. New door seals – all doors – (OEM rear
door gaskets, CCoT front door gaskets). All windows work smoothly and seal well. Pop-out vent
door gaskets replaced, hood hinge gaskets replaced, door hinge bushings replaced. 101K miles
indicated on odometer – believed to be accurate. Gray foam cargo area mat custom-cut to fit –
not OEM, but matches OEM and is attractive. All 4 seat belts are intact, not frayed, and work –
seat belt buzzer works, also
Body:
Repainted inside and out with Dupont single-stage urethane with hardener – Color matched to
Toyota 532 Mustard. Firewall and engine compartment is original OEM paint. Rooftop and rain
