Spring Sports Update
Softball finishes 16-11, tying record for most wins in a season.
During this record breaking season, under the direction of Coach
Rocco Coveilli, many team members achieved individual records. Junior Brianna Graham
broke the record for most hits in a season with 41, while Junior Shantia Gardner hit a
career high, 8 home runs including 2 grand slam home runs in one inning. Senior DeChelle
Nance broke the record for most runs scored in a season with 48 and she graduates as the
all-time hits and runs producer in Maple High School softball history.
Boys and girls track place fourth in highly competitive Lake Erie League Meet.
The season began slow due to the loss of key members from last year and injuries;
however seniors Jeremy Graves and Jack Barnett helped fill that void. Senior Dominic
Williams, placed 7th in the 100 meters at States. Other top performers included: James
Burge, Aaron Thomas, Elroy Harris, Tuwan Glass, Galen Carr, Devyn Valpando, Dezmenn
Fedrick, Almonte Patrick, Mark Everett, and Aaron Pipkins.
The girls team, lead by seniors Heaven Rios, Eboni Adams, Dominique Smith, had one
state qualifier Sophomore Sharonda Rowell. Contributing to the girls’ success were Taylor Walton, Ramanii Vance, Taylor Lattimore, Khadijah Hall, Briana Hall, Danielle Carter,
Elissa Lindsay, Lauren Hemphill, and Lacie Jones.

High School Seniors Give Back to Community
Over 250 Maple Heights graduating seniors had the opportunity to give back to their community this year through service learning. The senior class logged over 2600 hours through performing a variety of activities throughout the community. These activities included community
cleanup, tutoring and mentoring of younger students, service in elderly care facilities and volunteerism through the city government. “It felt really good to do something positive for our community and I learned a lot about the importance of helping others and responsibility,” said Jona’e
Smith, who volunteered at First Step Child Enrichment Center in Maple Heights.
Congratulations to
Our Senior!
My personal congratulations to the Class of 2012! I
am so proud of this group of
dedicated students who
have been offered more
than $2.3 million in scholarships and grants. Each year
at graduation, it is clear that

achievement by committing
to excellence is working.
Thank you to our team of
teachers, staff and administrators for the dedication to
helping our students on
their educational pathway.
A very special thanks to the

College Classes Offered at MHHS in the Fall
Partnership with Cleveland State is First of its Kind
A select group of 25 Maple Heights High School seniors will be taking college classes at Maple
Heights High School next fall through a collaborative agreement between the school district and
Cleveland State University. This unique program is the first of its kind in Northeast Ohio and allows Maple Heights students to receive 15 credits of college classes at no cost without having to
leave the high school. Richard Robertson will be participating in the program next year. “I am
glad that I will be able to take advantage of this opportunity. I can take college classes and since
they will be offered at our school I can still be active in leadership activities at the high school,”
said Robertson. The program will include four freshmen level courses, an introduction to college success including topics such as advising, choosing a major, student life activities, library research skills, and multiple visits to CSU’s campus. The Jennings Foundation funded a grant for
over $23,000 to support the program.

High School Architectural Drawing Teacher
Buddy Bell and his students deserve a great
big THANK YOU! The students moved over
2000 bricks by hand and over 60 plants from
the high school courtyard to the Little Red
Schoolhouse/Maple Heights Historical Society,
(located at Dunham and Rockside Roads). This
service learning project started in the classroom with students being taught about landscape design, removal, planning and planting.
The class then spent the next six days in the
field. Students also laid down weed blocker
and distributed mulch. Since the School House
has no water, students hand-carried nearly
125 gallons of water from trucks to the newly
planted landscape. Mr. Bell said, “What a
great opportunity for our students to learn
and give back to their community, memories
that will last a lifetime”.
Additional thanks goes to our district’s
buildings & grounds department and to board
member Dale
Walter for
providing assistance to make
the landscape
around our
original school
look so great!
