ANGELINA jolie IN
ATELIER VERSACe
In this modern adaptation of a
classic gown, Angelina shows
how a hit of colour can give a
look sizzle – and our style
experts approve. “She just
knocked it out of the park
with that beautiful updo,
gorgeous red lipstick and
slash of red in her dress,”
says Flare editor-in-chief Lisa
Tant. “Red is a stand-out
colour,” adds Adrian Mainella,
editor-in-chief of TheAesthete.

Globe Awards, the annual gala honouring
the best in film and television.
Not surprisingly, Hollywood royals Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt stole the show – on
both the romance and style fronts. Wearing
body-skimming Versace, Angelina turned
heads as she made her entrance but took
all the attention in her stride, putting the
spotlight on her handsome partner. “He
knows he’s much prettier than I am,” she
quipped. Brad looked dapper in a classic
tuxedo, accessorized with the cane he’s
been toting since he slipped while carrying
daughter Vivienne. But his mind wasn’t on
things sartorial. “It’s parents’ night out,” he
said. “We left the kids home.”
34 HELLO!
George Clooney may have
beat Brad Pitt in the Best
Actor in a Drama category,
but when it comes to love
– and style – they were both
winners. Brad’s longtime
love, Angelina Jolie, wowed
critics in an avant-garde
white-satin gown by Atelier
Versace. Meanwhile,
George’s flame, Stacy
Keibler (opposite), kept the
fires burning in red Valentino.
‘Yay, babe!’ she wrote on
Twitter after George’s win.
HELLO! 35
KATE WINSLET IN
JENNY PACKHAM
These stars quite literally took their cues from the red carpet. Left to right: Last
year’s Best Actress in a Drama winner and new mom Natalie Portman channels her
inner Marilyn Monroe in custom-made fuchsia Lanvin with a look straight out of
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; presenter Reese Witherspoon’s bouncy blond waves
add California spirit to her sophisticated Zac Posen gown; and Glee’s Dianna
Agron is a cut above in a gorgeous Giles dress with swan-shape cut-outs.
Opposite (from left): Salma Hayek and Kate Winslet punch up basic black
with metallic and white accents. Presenter Salma ruled the red carpet in an
Aztec-inspired strapless Gucci dress, while Kate wore a black-and-ivory silk
gown by Jenny Packham (a favourite designer of the Duchess of Cambridge).
Accessorized with Fred Leighton diamonds – and new beau Ned Rocknroll –
the look was more edgy than princessy for the star, who took home the prize
for Best Actress in a Made-for-TV Movie or Miniseries.
36 HELLO!
“Kate really knows her body
shape – she chooses dresses
that are cut to her figure,”
says Lisa. Adrian agrees. “Her
bust and her hips have
symmetry. It would look less
glamorous and more ‘fashion’
if you put it on Cate Blanchett.”
When going for Kate’s look,
be aware that the dress or
ensemble should “skim your
body and not be super stretchy
or too tight,” says Lisa.
HELLO! 37
CHARLIZE THERON
IN DIOR
Wearing a blush tone like
Charlize’s is difficult to pull
off, but not impossible. “If
you’re going to wear a
skin-tone colour, it needs
some embellishment,
whether that’s beading,
feathers or ruffles,” says
Lisa. Barbara Atkin, Holt
Renfrew’s vice-president of
fashion direction, advises
anyone wearing this shade
to accessorize. “Play with
jewelry,” she says.
38 HELLO!
Meanwhile, George
Clooney tried to “upstage”
pal Brad by making a spectacular entrance of his
own alongside statuesque
girlfriend Stacy Keibler.
“Oh, is Brad here, too?”
laughed George. “I hope
they’re allowed in!” Stacy,
radiant in Valentino, credited her beau with helping
her choose the design. “I
got George’s approval,”
she told Hello! “He’s more
of the award-show expert
than I am.”
The parade of stylish
celebrities seemed endless
– from Sofia Vergara in
form-fitting Vera
Wang to Reese
Witherspoon
in Zac Posen.
“Everyone
Romantic whites and pastels were a big hit among Hollywood’s
leading ladies. Charlize Theron (opposite, left) had fashion watchers
swooning over her pale pink Dior Couture gown. Although Charlize
lost out on the best-actress award for her role in Young Adult, she
won praise for her glamorous dress, which she paired with nude
Givenchy sandals. Elle Macpherson (opposite, right) showed off her
slender figure in a mermaid-style Zac Posen. And Kate Beckinsale
(left) also opted for a figure-hugging style – shimmering Roberto
Cavalli. Above (from left): Newly engaged Jessica Biel opted for a
lacy and romantic look in Elie Saab, while Nicole Kidman set herself
apart in a floor-sweeping embellished gown by Atelier Versace.
HELLO! 39
HELEN MIRREN IN
BADGLEY MISCHKA
‘It’s a little tight,’ Madonna said of
her bodice. ‘If I could only breath!’
“It’s a beautiful dress that
flatters her figure and her age
and allows her to have sex
appeal in her 60s,” says
Adrian. Pulling off a classic
yet daring gown with a
plunging neckline was no
problem for Helen, but would
it suit everybody? “Age is a
factor,” he says, “but I think
that body and personality are
more important.”
Glimmering green gowns made a striking contrast against the red
carpet. Zooey Deschanel and Madonna were just two of the stylish
stars to rock the trend on the runway. New Girl sweetheart Zooey
(left) made a stunning appearance in a two-tone Prada dress – and a
dramatic new haircut. While the Material Girl chose Reem Acra for
her ‘low-key’ fashion statement. ‘I wanted something simple and
glam, but fun,’ she told us. Opposite (from left): Voluptuous Modern
Family star Sofia Vergara was another celebrity who sported a
mermaid-style gown, also opting to mix textures for her blue Vera
Wang creation. And Oscar winner Helen Mirren had no trouble
keeping up with her younger counterparts as she stepped out in a
Badgley Mischka dress accented with a crystal belt and clutch.
looks fabulous,” said Mildred Pierce star Kate
Winslet, who attended with new love Ned
Rocknroll and did her part to contribute to the
glamorous occasion. “I wanted to pay homage
to Mildred Pierce and wear something she would
have approved of,” said Kate, explaining her
choice of a classic gown by Jenny Packham.
The nervous energy on the carpet was
palpable. But for a lucky few – including the
radiant Natalie Portman, who was expecting
her first child with fiancé Benjamin Millepied
when she attended last year – the evening took
on the tone of a lavish date night. “It’s amazing
what not being nominated can do to a woman,”
she said, with her better half at her side and
reflecting on her style decision for the 2012
bash. “I’m wearing this Marilyn Monroe-inspired gown. I loved the pink colour. It
reminded me of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” After
all, “tonight is all about relaxing and having
fun.” And stepping out dressed to the nines
with the ones that you love.
