Digital Identity for Connected Societies
An increasing number of digital services, from
financial to government services, are utilising digital
identities to access these services. Several private
and public sector deployments, sometimes in
partnership, are underway across the world to drive
the use of digital identities. Despite the complexity
involved in deployment, digital identity solutions
enable users to have greater direct control over their
own digital identities and enable more effective
identity management by service providers. What are
the different technology approaches to digital identity
solutions? How can digital identity solutions be scaled
and managed across users or a geographic
population? What are some of the use cases finding
success? Find out in this session. During the session,

Whether for hospital surgeons, airline security, or for
enabling warehouse workers to access information
while keeping their hands free, enterprise wearables
are now gaining traction across an almost unlimited
range of industries. A recent study by Salesforce
Research found that 76% of companies report
improvements in business performance since
deploying wearables in the enterprise. Indeed there
is a possibility that the addressable enterprise market
may prove even greater than for consumers. Tractica
forecasts that enterprise and industrial use cases will
drive the deployment of more than 75 million
wearable devices during the period from 2014
through 2020. This session will demonstrate some of
the leading applications of wearables in the
workplace and reveal how they are delivering real

Networking Lunch: featuring Network Disruptors
at The Showcase Stage
Although traditional models of mobile network
technology and deployment have delivered great
results over the past two decades, we are reaching a
point where new thinking is needed to meet the needs
of today and tomorrow – to extend the reach of
services more widely and to deliver the services in a
way that makes sense for all parts of the value chain.
To do this requires new business models hand in
hand with new technology – a genuine reinvention
rather than incremental innovation.
This showcase highlights a range of inventions with
the potential to help take the mobile ecosystem
beyond its current bounds, either to complement
existing businesses or disrupt them.

Operator Customer Analytics
If data is the new oil, operators have been sitting on
some immense reserves for years. Today we are
seeing operators make more creative and more
flexible use of this data, driven by improved technical
capacities to do so and the sheer business need for
customer relevance. Used well it is benefitting the
end user’s experience and engagement as well as
driving fresh uplifts in ARPU. We examine some of
the best examples here, together with a look behind

Devices: Innovation or Commoditisation?
Smartphone adoption has entered the late majority
phase of technology adoption diffusion and the word
“commoditisation” is being freely used. Certainly,
high profile victims of this maturing market are
multiplying. Is the consumer only interested in the
price of their Android device? Innovation is the
antidote to commoditisation, and the market is
searching for the next great hope or hype. Wearables
have yet to deliver, but is the market as
undifferentiated as the doomsayers would have you
believe? Where is the innovation gold in them there
hills? In this session, we ask some of the main
protagonists to respond and highlight where they are
innovating and differentiating to enhance the
consumer experience. During the session, tweet your

Gaming
The combination of increasingly sophisticated and
immersive gaming experiences, streaming
technologies and social media platforms is
transforming the video games industry. The personal
gaming experience is being supplemented or even
replaced by a community experience, and moving
from personal entertainment to spectator sport, with
top e-sports events now drawing larger viewing
audiences than many established sporting events,
and attracting ever more investment as a result. This
shift in consumer behaviour is creating new and
exciting opportunities all along the gaming value
chain, from the way games are developed and
commercialised to enabling gamers themselves to
monetise content streamed via their own channels
and to their own audiences. How will these trends
evolve over the coming years, and what impact will
they have on the video games industry and beyond?
How is mobile gaming being incorporated into this
new paradigm? What can other digital media
industries learn from gaming’s trans-media approach
to content creation and audience engagement?

Putting Privacy at the Core of Digital
As devices, apps and services continue to expand
users’ digital footprints on a massive scale, privacy
has emerged as a key consideration for users,
service providers and policymakers. The amount of
user data generated from devices, apps and services
today is unprecedented and is set to increase rapidly.
How can devices, platforms, apps and services be
designed in ways which put privacy at their core and
give users clear privacy controls over how their data
is collected and shared with third parties? How are
policymakers ensuring the right data protection and
privacy frameworks are put in place, particularly as
the technological landscape rapidly evolves? This
session will bring together some of the industry’s
leading privacy experts to debate these questions
and more. During the session, tweet your comments

5G: Creating Value for Industry Verticals
As the Internet of Things (IoT) begins to transform the ways
in which people and things interact, 5G is widely anticipated
to prove a catalyst for enabling a range of new industry
applications. These ultra-low latency networks will deliver
the connectivity requirements necessary to revolutionise
the prospects for autonomous cars and healthcare to name
just two such examples. Deloitte predicts that 60% of all
wireless IoT devices will be bought and used by enterprises
and industries, and 90% of the services revenue will
likewise be enterprise-driven. Thus providing critical
security and privacy concerns can be allayed and solutions
are in place to protect the huge amount of sensitive data
that will be transmitted on these networks, 5G looks set to
play a vital role in the Internet of Things across many
verticals. This session will debate how operators can
capitalise upon these exciting new market opportunities
and ensure technology requirements can be fulfilled with
their 5G investments. During the session, tweet your

Mobile Advertising: Ad-Engagement and Ad-Blocking
It is well recognised that mobile is a powerful platform for
marketers to communicate with their target audience.
Consequently, consumers are now being exposed to a
significantly higher volume and sophistication of online
advertising than ever before. However, it is vital to achieve
the right balance between well-targeted, relevant offers and
perceived intrusion in order to avoid abusing trust and
alienating consumers, who are not always aware of the
impact multimedia adverts can have on data allowances
until it is too late. Accordingly, ad-blocking initiatives that
provide consumers with more transparency and control
over the privacy of their personal data are now gaining
considerable traction. Certainly, Apple’s recent decision to
support mobile ad-blocking with the release of Safari iOS 9
has brought this inflammatory subject into the public
spotlight, forcing publishers and advertisers to consider
their response carefully. This session will debate the future
of the ad-tech revolution and seek to determine what
approach is truly in the best interests of the consumer.

The New Digital Operator
Under today’s business and financial pressures
nobody can afford to stand still. We have already
heard auto makers, financial houses and many others
describe themselves as digital companies; and now
operators are starting to describe themselves as
becoming ‘digital services providers’ (DSP).What
does that mean, in practice, to the operators? And
what changes in business model, technology,
organisation and business practices must they adopt
to realise the aim of becoming a successful DSP?

Data Monetisation: Capturing the MNO Revenue
Opportunity
Operators have a unique perspective of their users;
information which, in aggregate, can be a powerful
resource both internally and for sharing with third
parties. While privacy concerns have been an issue
historically, more powerful techniques for collating,
presenting and anonymising data in real time have
made the potential MNO offering both safer and more
compelling to partners in the public, NGO and private
sectors. This session explores how operators are able
to monetise the data they hold within the bounds of
both privacy and public acceptance. During the

The Road to Connected and Autonomous Cars
With a global market forecast of 44 million automated
vehicles by 2030 (BCG, 2015), connected and
automated driving is expected to have a huge
economic impact. New laws are now mandating
connectivity in Europe from March 2018, where all
new cars and light vans must be equipped with
‘eCall’, an emergency notification system to deal with
road accidents. Numerous societal benefits are
anticipated with progress in this industry, including
new jobs across the automotive value chain;
increased road safety and lower fatalities; increased
fuel-efficiency and lower environmental impact;
reduction of traffic congestion and higher comfort
standards for users. However the journey ahead is
not without potential roadblocks. This session will
examine how the automotive and mobile industries
can work closely together to enable the connected
car market to deliver upon its full promise, and how
key challenges including differing product lifecycles
and safety/security concerns can be surpassed.

Cognitive Computing
Artificial intelligence and cognitive computing have
existed for some time now, but it hasn’t been until
quite recently, as our ever more connected world
ushers in the Big Data era, that these technologies
have been brought into the mainstream. Broadly
defined as simulating human thought processes in
computerized models, cognitive computing is
designed to facilitate useful interaction between
human and computing systems that build knowledge,
learn, understand language and reasoning while also
being able to grasp more subtle concepts such as
context. Beyond the incredible potential for scientific
research, businesses and industries generating
structured data at the necessary scale stand to
benefit the most in the short term from insights gained
from these new computing systems. In the longer
term, these technologies promise to radically
transform how we interact with an increasingly digital
and automated world around us. Join this session for
unique insights from pioneers of cognitive computing.

Innovating for Inclusion
Governments, NGOs and other institutions are
increasingly leveraging ICT, and mobile in particular,
to more efficiently deliver important services to
existing constituents as well as to previously
underserved individuals and communities. In many
cases however, scaling up these activities to boost
overall inclusion faces many challenges. From an
access point of view, coverage remains a key
concern, and efforts aimed at connecting the rest of
the world to the internet must continue at pace, and
will certainly require a blend of conventional solutions
as well as more innovative or cost efficient solutions
to achieve this goal. Digital literacy also presents a
significant challenge given so many of the world’s
underserved populations will be accessing such
services for the first time, emphasising the need to

The Reinvention of the MVNO
In many countries MVNOs were first introduced as
a regulatory mechanism for boosting competition,
but often ended up supporting specific niches with
relatively little impact on the market as a whole.
Today, though, we are seeing MVNOs exploit new
opportunities driven by the rapid changes in the
technology and business environment. They are
creating new markets and supporting drastically
different business models, increasing their potential
both as disruptive rivals and partners to the MNOs.
In this session we showcase some of the most
significant of this new wave. During the session,

Network Security
Today’s increasingly complex IP-based networks are
becoming harder and harder to protect with a
perimeter-based form of security, while the
increasing variety and sensitivity of data traffic is
liable to render networks greater targets. Radically
different approaches to data security, problem
detection, mitigation and recovery will be essential to
make sure that future networks are robust and, to
end users, trustworthy. While it is early days still,
there are pioneers doing striking work to rethink the
way our networks are protected. Join them in this

Unleashing the Value of IoT Platforms
The Internet of Things continues to attract much
industry interest but it is still in the early stages. While
many devices are being developed today to support
the Internet of Things, the majority are at the concept
stage or exist as standalone devices, as yet
unconnected to other IoT devices as interoperable
solutions for the home or in industrial applications.
The world of IoT platforms for application
development is currently in flux, with a number of
competing platforms using different protocols and
based on different standards. What is the best
approach for developers building apps for the Internet
of Things? How are open standards evolving to
enable IoT solutions to seamlessly interconnect in the
future? How can IoT platforms facilitate data analytics
to improve existing IoT solutions and support the
creation of new products and solutions? During the

Co-Opetition and Managed Services in the Digital
Value Chain
While the traditional ‘telcos’ move to become smarter,
more agile providers of digital services, the
ecosystem around them is shifting. More complex
offerings in IoT and ‘x as a service’ force operators to
coordinate partners more like a systems integrator.
Ventures into media distribution, financial services
and more, create new fields for competition and
collaboration. Meanwhile traditional vendors are
building their own managed service propositions
which can take them direct to market as well as
supporting MNOs in delivering their new generation of
services. In short, the old supplier-buyer relationship
is changing fast. The opportunities are astronomical
for those leaders who can reinvent their processes,
organisations and world view to embrace these new
realities but it’s not easy. This session brings lessons
from thought leaders positioning their companies to
lead in the years ahead. During the session, tweet

MNO CEO Roundtable
Operator revenue growth has seen significant variations
between different regions over the past few years with
emerging market economies maintaining healthy growth, as
opposed to most of the rest of the world seeing slower and
even negative growth rates. The global forecast for the
coming years seems much more stable and uniform,
though perhaps not so bright, with GSMAi predicting a
3.1% CAGR per annum through to 2020, down from 4% for
2008-14. While most markets will see similar forces driving
this trend - such as regulatory action, increased competition
and market saturation - decisions taken today will define
how successful operators will be at beating the markets
tomorrow. Indeed, the transition to data centric services
enabled by next generation all IP networks is creating new
opportunities to diversify revenue streams with new
products, services and partnerships beginning to offset the
loss of traditional operator revenues, as well as easing the
burden of investment for future network deployments and
upgrades. Join leading operator CEOs from around the
world as they discuss how the mobile industry can best
position itself to succeed in the face of the challenges our
industry will encounter in the coming years. During the

Enabling the Smart Workforce
Mobility is now front and centre of any progressive
companies IT strategy. While consumer initiatives grab the
headlines and the vast majority of subscribers, enterprise
accounts for a significant share of revenue and profit. For
example 27% of Vodafone’s global revenue comes from
enterprise, 40% in the UK. Employees now expect the
flexibility that mobile solutions provide to enable a 21st
century work/life balance. It is a key element of recruitment
and employee retention. Businesses are looking far beyond
productivity applications to unified communications, M2M,
cloud and full service solutions across all device types,
operating systems and things, for organizational and
service efficiencies. The growth and complexity mobility
adds to enterprise IT infrastructure requires significant
strategic consideration and investment in enabling
technology; security, cost, application and device
management solutions. This session explores the options

Wearables for Wellness and Lifestyle
The wearables market is set to be worth an incredible
$25 billion by 2019, with fitness and activity trackers
predicted to account for more than half of the market
in terms of units shipped, while smartwatches will
contribute more than 50% of the revenue (CCS
Insight, 2015). Spurred largely by the arrival of the
Apple Watch, traditional watchmakers are now also
entering the wearables space, with Fossil Group’s
acquisition of MisFit possibly signalling the start of a
wider trend. Yet the real promise of wearables is
perhaps far greater than the digital tracking
applications which dominate the market today. This

The End of Subsidy?
The mobile has an annual debate about the future of
subsidy, however 2015 has seen some significant
shifts in the use of subsidy, with greater tariff
transparency, use of finance, flexibility and
unbundling with the growth in SIM only contracts.
Subsidy remains critical to high end device sales and
subscriber acquisition in many, often advanced
markets. If this trend continues, what will the impact
be on mobile operator’s control of retail, a key
customer touchpoint, it’s control of a devices network
performance and the sales of high end devices,
which are already under pressure? The end of
subsidy could marginalize the mobile operator and
accelerate the advent of eSIM in smartphones and
other mobile devices. This session discusses the
future of subsidy and the potential impact of its
demise. During the session, tweet your comments

The Internet of Things: Connectivity
Connectivity and communication technologies provide
the fundamental plumbing to IoT solution enablement.
All vertical markets are dependent on innovation in
device and communication technologies to reduce
costs, enhance services, and to enable a roadmap of
new services. This portion of the value chain is
complex for suppliers and end-users. Besides
continuous hardware pricing pressure, device and
module vendors need to rationalize portfolios for
connectivity options, vertical market segments
served, and services. For instance, cellular hardware
is being challenged by new low-power wireless WAN
technologies operating on unlicensed spectrum. This
in turn is driving development of new LTE standards
designed for M2M/IoT communications. This session
will assess the most salient device, module,
connectivity technology, standards and vertical
market trends shaping the IoT market. During the

New Paradigms for Delivering Cost Effective
Quality of Experience
To quote an operator CEO recently, “Without QoE
we are dead”. The quality of users’ experience on
the operator network is fundamental to the brand’s
reputation, but throwing money at the network to
ensure bandwidth has proven unsustainably
expensive and, at times, just solves the wrong
problem. New QoE-centric approaches to network
building, monitoring and management paired with a
clearer understanding of the end user’s actual
experience offer the chance for the operator to
compete better with less expenditure. In this
session we examine best practices to deliver an
excellent quality of experience. During the session,

Securing The Internet of Things
The Internet of Things will enable unprecedented
numbers of connected things from wearables and
connected cars to smart homes and critical
infrastructure. The possibilities are seemingly endless
as new use cases emerge. However, with more
connected devices comes a greater risk of potential
security threats; hackers will always look for ways to
expose new vulnerabilities. Industry approaches to
tackling security weaknesses range from reactive
measures to seeking to implement security at the
design stage. What security threats does the Internet
of Things pose? What is the industry, from device
manufacturers and app developers to mobile
operators and industry alliances doing to secure the
Internet of Things? How can security and encryption
be embedded into IoT platforms, apps and big data
stores to protect against potential security hacks?

LTE Network Diversity: LTE Unlicensed and
Beyond
Global mobile data traffic is set to continue growing
at exponential rates over the next five years, and
according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, Wi-Fi
will account for just over half of all traffic from 2016
onwards. The development of LTE-U provides mobile
operators with a compelling solution to address
congestion within their licensed spectrum bands
while also providing a superior user experience to
Wi-Fi in the unlicensed bands, especially in those
instances where Wi-Fi’s performance is likely to be
tested. However, questions remain over the viability
of running both Wi-Fi and LTE-U within the same
bands, and concerns have been raised about the
potential impact LTE-U deployments might have on
existing and future Wi-Fi deployments. Beyond these
technical considerations, how will consumers react to
competition between a perceived free service in WiFi, to charged access via LTE-U? Given the potential
impact on consumers, will telecoms regulators be
tempted to intervene, and what implications could
this have for future innovations in the unlicensed
spectrum bands? Join experts from across the value

Connecting the Home
The rise of the Internet of Things has seen the
concept of the connected home become a reality.
With connected devices continuing to grow, evolve
and benefit consumers, we are now seeing the
connected home become one of the largest growth
opportunities for the IoT ecosystem. As we become
increasingly aware of the benefits of a connected
home, the demand for solutions is gathering
momentum. Barriers to adoption remain however;
there is a strong need to establish interoperability
among connected products and services in order to
enable collaboration and allow network and service
optimisation for example. Join some of the industry’s
leading players as they discuss innovative solutions
and the challenges and opportunities faced in
achieving interoperability. During the session, tweet
your comments and questions to #MWCCNH
