Atlantic Ocean – equal to all the water
that flows in every river on earth in 24 hours – the water
level in the Bay rises a staggering four stories. The majestic

A front row seat to the power of the Bay of Fundy.
Right at the doorstep of Saint John, the Bay of Fundy’s monstrous tides bring spectacle to life at
the Reversing Rapids. Hundreds of millions of years ago, continents collided, forming the gorge
through which the St. John River flows. When the world’s highest tides push in, rushing up and
over the river, they collide, and the river actually reverses in the face of this unstoppable natural
power. Then, as the water begins to drop with low tide, the river empties freely into the Bay,
and the full flow of the St. John River thunders through the gorge once more. Think you can
handle the power of the Bay of Fundy? From the heart of Saint John you can enjoy all of these
experiences and more. Can you feel your heart racing?!

URBAN EXPERIENCES
Look back at the oldest incorporated city in Canada
It’s not surprising, given the city’s long history, that Saint John has a rich selection of museums,
historic sites, and monuments to a proud past. Once dubbed “The Loyalist City”, our
character is partly influenced by the arrival of 14,000 American Loyalists in the late 18th
century. What might be more surprising is just how intact our historical record is throughout
the city. The Trinity Royal Preservation Area in particular – which was destroyed by fire in 1877
but rebuilt to stand the test of time – is a stunning portrait of a streetscape locked in time.
Barbour’s General Store
Grand Bay-Westfield Cenotaph,
War Memorial and Peace Park
An authentic 18th century General Store
revamped as a charming tearoom, store
and museum. Come in and enjoy local New
Brunswick products the way they have been
enjoyed for generations. Originally from
Sheffield, New Brunswick, the store was used
as a chicken coop for a number of years before
being brought to Saint John in two pieces. In
1967, in celebration of Canada’s centennial
and Barbours’ 100th year in business, the
General Store was restored and opened as
a museum. It now sits at the foot of King
Street in its third Saint John location across
the street from where the original G.E Barbour
manufacturing facility once sat.
The park is dedicated to those who lost their
lives to defend our country, and was recently
rededicated to world peace.

Fort LaTour was built in 1631 by Charles de

The Old (Loyalist) Burial Ground
Three Sisters Lamp
The Old Burial Ground is referred to by many
names, most commonly the Loyalist Burial
Grounds. The earliest gravestone is that of
Conradt Hendricks, dated July 13, 1784.
Having reached a state of disrepair in the late
1990s, the Old Burial Ground was restored by
the Irving family in 1995 in memory of the late
KC Irving (1899-1992), founder of the Irving
empire of companies.
These three red gas lamps, visible from three
miles seaward, were stationed at the end of
Prince William Street. If the three red lamps
appeared individually, sailors would know
they were heading straight into the harbour,
however if only one or two could be seen,
sailors knew they needed to alter their course.

URBAN EXPERIENCES
Saint John Architecture
You don’t need to be a student of architecture
to enjoy the abundance of uniquely preserved
architecture in Saint John. The architecture of
the city’s Uptown area, rebuilt after the Great
Fire of 1877, can best be described as Eclectic
High Victorian. Few North American cities can
still boast such an extensive preserved built
environment. All of the styles popular in
the era of late Victorianism are beautifully
represented. Exquisite examples of Second
Empire, Italianate, Classical Revival, Gothic
Revival, Greek Revival and Georgian buildings
line the streets of the business area, the
Trinity Royal Preservation Area and further
afield in Saint John.

wonderful buildings, and learn their

Stonehammer Geopark:

Canoe and Kayak
Saint John and the surrounding areas are
abundant with lakes and rivers to explore. See
map on page 46 for details of main waterways
within the city and surrounding areas.
A Geopark is an area that is recognized by the
UNESCO supported Global Geopark Network
to have exceptional geological heritage.
Fascinating geology – from fossils to relics –
are exactly what you’ll find when you explore
this fascinating treasure. Stonehammer Geopark
spreads across southern New Brunswick – one
of the first places in Canada to be explored by
geologists. In 1857 a group of young men in
Saint John formed the “Steinhammer Club”
to explore the geology near their home.
Stonehammer Geopark is about geology, but
it is also about people, society and culture.
Visitors will see where we settle, the landscape,
the crops we grow, natural hazards, water
resources, climate, what we mine, and the
energy we use are all linked to geology.
Hiking
There are several places to hike in Saint John
and surrounding areas. Come to the Irving

Meenan’s Cove
Wolastoq means “the beautiful river” in the
language of the Maliseet people who once
lived on its shores. Now we know it as the
beautiful St. John River. Wolastoq’s tributaries,
lands and forests provided an abundance of
food, materials and medicines to the Maliseet
people, acting also as a transportation route
for hunting and trade. Created in 2004,
overlooking the Reversing Rapids, Wolastoq
Park features statues of historical Saint John
