Wooden floors
for every room.
Beautiful floors contribute a lot to interior design.
You’ve probably seen pictures of inspiring surroundings
with beautiful floors in magazines or discussed interiors with friends and acquaintances. Then you’re not
alone. And interest in wooden floors for rooms other
than the living room or bedroom is on the increase. Just
like when making other important decisions, there’ll be
many questions when it comes to making a choice. Can
you really lay a wooden floor in the kitchen? How does a
wooden floor react with underfloor heating? Is a wooden
floor tough enough for the hall? How often do you have
to maintain a wooden floor?
Tarkett Magazine puts you right and answers all your
questions. At the same time, we present our entire range
that has been developed to meet every expectation
on design and quality. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to
your own ideas and exciting interior solutions for the
kitchen, hall, teenager’s room, home office, bedroom,
dining room or living room. Because wooden floors can
be installed in almost any room!

There is no place like home!
When you are away you often long for
home. Most people consider their home
to be a safe haven in their lives. As a
rule, you feel safe within the four walls of
your home. And since your home means
so much, you want your personal style
to be reflected in your surroundings and
furnishings. No one can have failed to
notice the growing interest in interior
decoration and design.
Epoque Oak Antique Brushed Plank
Which sofa should I get? Do the curtains
match the new table? Does the new bookshelf match the style of the armchair and
lamp? There are many questions and no
easy answers.
Let us play around with floorings and
furniture. Here you see the same set of
furniture but with four different floors!
The end result is four different environments, each with its own specific characteristics. It is rather amazing to see how
the style and atmosphere can be altered
just by changing a wooden floor. You may
not have thought of it before, but your
floor plays a fundamental part in creating
the overall impression when you furnish
your home. Do you want to create contrasts or do you want your furniture to
match your floor? Which wooden floors
best suit your style and personality? We
hope you will find the answers in this
magazine.

Variety is just
the beginning ...
With Tarkett the possibilities are endless. That’s
because our product range comprises more than
250 different varieties of wooden floors. Choose
from classic wood species and new exciting wood
species with different colours, shapes, finishes and
characters. Choose between gradings that provide
appearances rich in variation. Or choose between
different numbers of strips in the floorboard to
create a calm or lively design.
Choose between lacquer and oil, which offer protection and make the floor surface glossy
or matt. Choose a wooden floor from a variety of
thickness choices which offer you different possibilities for laying and re-sanding. And don’t forget
skirtings, mouldings and other accessories which
often add the finishing touches.
Experience you can rely on.
Tarkett has been making wooden floors since 1886
and its floors can be found all over the world.
To begin with, it was just a craft among many
others. Rooted in craftsmanship, it is today a
modern production process which takes the environment and people into consideration. Since the
3-layer board was patented and introduced in the
1940s, Tarkett wooden floors have been installed
in millions of rooms the world over.
When you choose a Tarkett wooden floor you don’t
buy just a floor. You also buy the expertise that
ensures that the floor is of a high quality. This expertise has evolved over generations and it is this
expertise we call technical design. This concept
includes the 3-layer construction that provides
extra stability since wood is a living material, Proteco surface treatment, which protects the surface
against micro-scratches, and the manufacturing
process involving strips and planks, which facilitates a design rich in variation.
Welcome to our wonderful
world of wooden floors!

Planks or strips
Choosing a surface
Wooden floors have different strip lengths, when gives them varying designs.
1-strip floors or plank, have a wear layer
that covers the whole floorboard. This
gives a peaceful pattern with a more exclusive appearance. 2-strip floors comprise two rows, which also gives a quiet
impression. Most floors feature a 3-strip
design. This means that each board has 3
rows of strips. These floors give a livelier
feeling that is created with the variation
in the appearance of the strips.
The choice between a glossy or matt
surface is about surface shine, feel and
maintenance. An oiled floor, with its satin
surface, has a natural feel and a surface
with variation, but unlike lacquered floors
it needs a coating of maintenance oil at
regular intervals. If you want the feel and
appearance of an oiled floor, but without
the maintenance oiling, have a look at
Proteco Natura matt lacquer. This makes
the floor more scratch-resistant and hardwearing. However, a floor with a matt lacquer demands more maintenance than an
ordinary lacquered floor. Proteco Lacquer
gives a glossy surface that is hard-wearing and scratch-resistant. It is also the
floor that is the easiest to maintain. If
you are looking for a floor with an exciting structure, we recommend a brushed
floor, which slightly accentuates the wood
grain.
Stained floors have also become very
popular, and come in many exciting colours. If you sand a stained floor, it will
need to be re-stained if you want to restore the original shade.
Plank
2-strip
3-strip
Bevelled edges
Bevelled edges emphasise and reinforce
the feeling of a real wood floor.
All plank floors have bevelled edges.
Some are bevelled the whole way around
the plank, others just along its length.
There are also different degrees of bevel,
depending on the floor. All bevelled floors
are of course protected with Proteco surface treatment, even the bevel itself.
Viva
When reconditioning an old floor, a thinner floor covering may be an advantage as
you wont have to raise thresholds and cut
doors. This must be weighed against the
ability to re-sand the floor.
Besides the 22 mm floor, all thicknesses can be laid on underfloor heating. The
exception is beech and maple in thickness
13 and 14 mm, for which we do not recommend underfloor heating because of the
nature of the wood. This does not limit our
8.5 mm floor (Viva) however, where the
thin layer of veneer is not affected, irrespective of the type of wood.
Plank and 2-strip floors
2-strip and plank floors feature our most
exclusive designs. The floors are available
in 8.5 13 and 14 mm thickness in various
assortments, lengths, breadths and, of
course, types of wood and surface treatments. Plank has bevelled edges for increased feeling of exclusivity.
Plank and 2-strip floors are available
in the Epoque, Tango and Viva families.
Different thicknesses
3-strip floors
Tarkett’s various families of floors are of
differing thickness in order to attain maximum stability in the floor. The thicker the
wear layer, the thicker the substructure
needs to be in order restrain the natural
movement of the wood. 8.5 mm floors
have a thin veneer on top and therefore
are made thinner.
A thicker wear layer allows the floor
to be re-sanded. Our 14 mm floors can be
re-sanded 4-5 times, depending on how
hard and deep the wear has been. A 13
mm floor can be re-sanded 2-3 times. Our
range also includes a 22 mm floor. This
floor has been adapted to buildings where
the floor is laid directly on the timber
frame. The wear layer is the same thickness as on a 14 mm floor.
3-strip floors are the most sold design of
wooden floor. The basic construction is
the same as for plank and 2-strip. The difference comprises the pattern obtained
from the length of strips. 3-strip floors
are assorted in various grades, which creates different characters of pattern - (see
page 55).
3-strip floors are available in the
Salsa, Bravo, Rumba and Viva families
with various wood types and grades,
lengths and widths, and different surface
treatments. We also have lacquered and
brushed floors that are an exciting alternative to traditional wood floor patterns.

A wooden floor
for every room?
Which wooden floor is most suitable for the different rooms in
the house? There’s no clear answer to the question, since our
ways of living and the circles we move in differ greatly. We have
different preferences when it comes to our homes. The floors in
some homes are covered in mats and carpet, which means the
floors are not so sensitive to wear. In other homes, there’s no
mats at all. Some people go barefoot while others wear shoes.
Families with children have different demands than single
households.
One important question is what do you expect from your new
wooden floor? There’s probably many aspects to consider but
basically, it’s surely a longing for a genuine feel. When you
choose Tarkett, you get that feeling but you also get reliability
in the form of experience, craftsmanship and modern thinking.
Wooden floors are quite usual in many rooms today. Then it’s
even more important to know that there are differences between wooden floors. Wooden floors have varying possibilities and properties that match the demands of various types of
room. That’s exactly what Parquet Magazine is all about.
Some types of wood and surface treatments can withstand more
than others. Different woods have different hardnesses and
matt surface treatments demand more in maintenance than
high-gloss lacquers. Parquet Magazine gives you inspiration
for different environments alternated with facts on our range
of floors.

In the hall, where the
outside meets the
inside, durability and
stability are important
features.
In the bedroom
you want comfort,
peace and quiet.
A wooden floor in the
new kitchen should
also be resistant and
hygienic.
Durable and easily
cleaned wood floors
are important
properties in your
home office.
For the living
room properties as
acoustics, ”beautiful
floors to walk on”
and ability to use
underfloor heating
might guide you.
Floors that are
easy to install,
easy to clean and
easy to change are
practical in the

Give your
feelings
free rein!
Design plays an important role in the living room but as it’s a room with lots of
hustle and bustle, function is also important. It’s often where the family gathers
together. It’s in the living room that you
have the greatest opportunity to stamp
your personality and style on your home.
So let your fantasy loose and be inspired
with your interior. There much to choose
from in Tarkett’s wide range. On the left,
you can see a stylish example that creates
a wonderful feeling of space in the room.
But there are many, many more comfortable wooden floors to help you realise your
design ideas. Which style do you prefer?
Exclusive? Classical? Trendy? Here, you’ve
got the opportunity to give your senses
free rein.
In the Room Destination Table on page 54,
you’ll see a rough guide to which floor best
suits which room from the point of view of
technology and specifications. The recommendation takes into account the pattern
of movements for a normal family, the
hardness of the different wood species,
the thickness of the wear layer and the surface finish of the floor. All wooden floors
from Tarkett are excellent solution for your
living room. In other words, you can rest
assured. Then it’s up to your preference,
taste and style what you choose.

Classic Oak keeps its unique position.
Oak is the most common wood used in parquet floors
and offers more possibilities for interior design than
any other. In addition to plank, miniplank, 2-strip and
3-strip, oak is available in various grades, with large
or small bevel, white stained and lacquered or oiled.
A choice of oak is a safe choice that stands the test
of time. Besides oak, our classic wood range includes
beech, maple, birch, cherry and walnut.

Why not let Epoque Oak Plank or one of our other beautiful floors garnish your meals? Isn’t the new White Pearl Plank overleaf tantalizing?
When choosing a floor to have in your dining room or combined dining/living room, you’ve got to count on an increased amount of wear
and tear than in your living room. Chairs are going to be drawn in and
out from the table after meals and there’s more traffic due to the need
for cleaning up.
Then it’s good to know that a Tarkett wooden floor is protected
with the unique Proteco surface treatment, which is one of the most
hard-wearing floor lacquers in the world and extremely resistant to
wear and tear and micro-scratches. At the same time, Proteco retains
the feel you get from a genuine wooden floor.

Recipe for the kitchen
– a new wooden floor
Attitudes to wooden floors in the kitchen
are changing and more are being laid
there all the time. And design is playing
an increasingly larger role. Tarkett is
always opening new windows that expand
the perception of wooden floor design.
Take a closer peak at these surroundings
and you’ll understand what we mean.
Pulses race faster in the kitchen, as it’s
there it all happens. A kitchen with a high
factor of well-being takes on the role of
something of a motor for everyone there.
Of course you can lay a wooden floor in
the kitchen! But the kitchen gets a bit
tougher treatment than the living room or
bedroom so you should choose a floor that
can take a bit more hustle and bustle and
is easy to keep clean. A floor treated with
a glossy lacquer is easier to keep clean
than one with a matt or brushed surface.
Bon appétit!

The bedroom is a place for peace and
quiet. It’s a room for rest and a good
sleep; a room for enjoyment and mustering strength.
It’s warm character gives a real wood
floor the feeling of well-being. Wear and
tear is low, giving you the freedom of
choosing the floor that best pleases your

First impressions
are important.
Viva Contra Oak
The entrance and the hall are the first things your visitor meets.
Of course you want to give a good impression even at first glance.
A wood floor in your hall gives you every chance to create something your guests will remember. Just remember to avoid soft
woods like birch and cherry. Soft wood is ideal for Viva’s veneer
floors though, where the tough HDF core makes it our hardest
floor no matter what kind of wood is used for the veneer. This
makes Viva an excellent choice in the hall and entrance.
But the hall isn’t just meant to give guests their first important
impressions. It must also meet the grit, dust and dirt that is
brought in day after day. So you should protect the first metre
or so with a door mat or use a hard and water-resistant floor on
that part.
Viva Oak White 2-strip
Tarkett’s wooden floors stand up to tough use. All our floors
have the unique Proteco protection against micro-scratches and
wear, and also makes them easy to keep clean. One important
aspect when cleaning is that there is no need to use chemicals
that harm the environment. Usually, it’s enough to use a dry or
slightly damp mop. Where there is a good deal of traffic, such
as in hallways and entrances, we recommend periodic maintenance with Tarkett’s Bioclean and Refresher, which restores
the original freshness to the surface. Matt floors with Proteco
Natura or Proteco Hardwax Oil require more frequent maintenance however, as dirt will adhere easier on a matt finish than
one with clear varnish.

Have a good day
at home and at work!
Technical development in IT and communication affect and change our lives.
In modern society, laptops and mobile
phones are countless. There’s no need to
be physically present. It’s important to be
connected and have a presence on the net.
More and more of us have the freedom and
opportunity to work from home.
38
Being able to combine functionality and
contentment is a challenge when furnishing an office at home. The office must be
like an integral part of the home while being a stimulating workplace.
There are more reasons to choose a
wooden floor for the home office than
just the aesthetics. The floors are easy
to keep clean with regard to cables and
connections for the technical equipment.
The unique Proteco surface protection
also makes the floors extremely durable
against the increased wear and tear. But
we still recommend using floor protection
against indentations from chair castors.
How can a
120 - year old
be so perky?
Trends come and go with increasing speed.
Due to new technology, globalisation and
changing needs, few companies manage
to keep up with developments and live
to a ripe old age. There are exceptions,
of course, and some companies somehow
succeed in meeting needs for decades –
even centuries. One of these companies,
Tarkett, has been making floors since
1886. What is their recipe for continued
success spanning three centuries?
Keeping busy
It is nice to occasionally take a break from
work and just relax, enjoy life at your own
pace and recharge the batteries. It is
tempting to do the same when running a
company. But that can be risky. One of the
secrets behind Tarkett’s lasting success
is the company’s constant drive for improvement and reluctance to settle down
and relax. We launch new products and
innovations every year in order to stay in
the lead.
Tradition and innovation
All the knowledge and craftsmanship that
the company has possessed since it was
founded in 1886 is expressed in the floors
we produce today. At the same time, genuine expertise combined with cutting-edge
technology results in new, modern, intelligent and beautiful floors. Our product
range is impressive, and some customers
find the choice almost overwhelming.
More than just wood for walking on
A floor is a floor is a floor. But there are
many related factors. Are our floors easy
to assemble even for non-experts? Are
they environmentally friendly to produce?
Are the floors recyclable? Are there extrastrong varnishes to protect the floors? Are
there products to help maintain the floors?
Are the floors easy to clean and care for?
Are there generous guarantees? The answer to all these questions is YES! This is a
key factor behind Tarkett’s success. Taking
a holistic approach to give customers exactly what they want and need. This is the
simple explanation for this 120year-old company’s continued
vitality and success.
39
The Danish Hybrid!
Danish design is famous the world over. Architects like Arne Jacobsen
and Jörn Utzon instil respect and have contributed to putting Denmark
on the architectural map.
So it’s no coincidence that we visited a
firm of Danish architects to find out what
they think of current trends.
Housed in an old industrial premises
at Vesterbro Torv in central Århus, Mikkel
Frost has been running CEBRA Arkitekter since 2001 together with colleagues
Carsten Primdahl and Kolja Nielsen. The
office is characterised by open areas, high
ceilings and large, light windows. Just a
few days before our visit, Mikkel Frost was
invited to an architect congress in Mexico
to present his thoughts on ”The Danish
Hybrid”.
Architecture not just for
the sake of architecture
CEBRA is involved in projects ranging from
industry design to town planning with
schools, homes and entire residential estates. And they take on assignments with
an approach that associates the firm with
the expression ”The Danish Hybrid”.
”We believe that different designs to the
apartments, not just bedsits, single bedrooms and two-bedrooms but also duplex
and other larger types of apartment in the
same building enables a greater social
dispersion that increases people’s contacts and contentment. ”
Trends are quick to change
”Trends shift much faster than they did
before,” says architect Mikkel Frost. ”And
they’re global. Local “flavour” is much
less dominant than it has been. The main
reason for this is the impact Internet has.
People like us working with design are affected and “steered” more and more by
Internet. Everybody on the net today can
see a project that went public yesterday.
Fashion usually talks about ”The Spring
Collection”. In architecture, we started
calling it ”The Daily Collection” because
of its rate of development”
40
live and work in the various environments. We then design the architecture so
that it stimulates and inspires the people
so they function and thrive. Architecture
must not be just for the sake of architecture. There are many aspects to consider.
Light being one of the most important.
Visibility and privacy are extremely important aspects in people’s contentment
and well-being.”
Mikkel Frost tells us that in a current
residential project, they are trying to influence from the drawing board to attain
a mix of people living there.
Mikkel Frost
Wholeness and a little more humour
”Architecture must not just be to create
iconic buildings,” believes Mikkel Frost.
”Our job is to start from the way people
The firm sees its designs as a whole. If
squares are the dominating form, they
try to follow it up in every detail, such
as windows of the same shape. A build-
ing is regarded as a sculpture and even a
painting. ”You can change form by painting,” Frost says and tells us that it’s useful when designing schools. (Perhaps
something to think about when decorating the kid’s room at home?) They’re not
afraid of inviting people to get involved in
their projects. Especially in the design of
schools, it’s essential that children, par-
ents and everybody working at the school
contribute with their views. ”We’re pragmatic. A good idea doesn’t need to come
from us, clients can come with good ideas
too.
There’s too few humorous details in
architecture,” Frost believes and points
to the fact that colours and patterns give
good vibrations and increased content-
ment, and thereby also better studying.
In interior design they stretch to
light, ceilings and walls. And of course
floors. In some projects they recommend
the style of furniture to use.
To conclude, here are some tips from
Mikkel Frost of ”The Danish Hybrid” on
what you should think about when furnishing.
Lasse Nordström
TIP
Function: Start with the function. What will the room be used
for? Will there be much hustle and bustle in the room or is it a
place for quiet and contemplation? Look at the room as if it has
your personality. Make the room personal. There’s a variety of
exciting colours, patterns, materials and floors to give you the
largest choice.
Character: What character would you like your room to permeate?
If it’s a room facing north, for example, it will have a chilly character. Sunny, facing south, and you’ll heighten the warmth and
light in the room. If it’s a room with high ceiling, you can make it
even higher by using supporting and reinforcing elements.

A classic dark wooden floor provides an exciting contrast to the light and airy environment that is often
found in modern homes. Until relatively recently,
nearly all dark wooden floors were made from exotic
wood species, but there are now exciting and beautiful alternatives of European origin. Heat treatment
gives familiar wood species a new and exciting look.
Thanks to the treatment the floor becomes dark and
exotic, making it an excellent alternative to tropical
wood species. It also becomes slightly more stable
and moves less at different temperatures and humidities. Heat treated floors are well suited to being
re-sanded. The heat treatment infuses the wear layer with colour so that the floor retains its dark
character even after re-sanding – unlike a stained
wooden floor.

Tarkett Wooden Floors – a natural choice …
Wood is a natural and renewable resource
- a new tree grows where one has been
felled, restoring the natural balance.
Wood is therefore a good environmental
choice. Unfortunately, mismanagement
is not unknown in the forestry sector.
Sensitive forest areas are being devastated in favour of short-term gains. Tropical
forests are being felled at a pace that can
not be excused, even though some areas
are well-managed. As one of the world’s
leading wooden floor manufacturers, we
have a big responsibility to help facilitate
sustainable forestry. In order to contribute to and safeguard good environmental
practices and sustainable management of
the delicate forest resource, Tarkett is cooperating with various agencies for environmental certification. At the same time,
we ensure that future generations will be
able to enjoy beautiful wooden floors.
Wood is a renewable resource, which makes it
a good environmental
choice. All of Tarkett’s
products have Environmental Product Declarations.
Tarkett is striving to develop new products from common European wood species
that have the looks and characteristics
of tropical wood species. Heat treated
Ash Cognac and Oak Java are a couple of
examples of this. See page 43. We do not
keep tropical wood species in stock in the
Nordic countries.
We use the waste generated in production to
make pellets which are
used for energy production. Tarkett also has
continuous programmes to reduce energy
and water consumption in its production
processes. Our production units are certified under the ISO 14001 Environmental
Management System and the ISO 9001
Quality Management System.
Examples of external certification programmes where follow-up is implemented once
a year by external auditors.
• ISO 14001 – our environmental programme that guides all our environmental
targets and routines.
• FSC Chain of Custody (SW-COC-00186)/Rainforest Alliance – Our units and
sales companies in Europe are certified to manufacture and sell FSC certified floors.
Tarkett can currently deliver to order FSC-certified oak, beech, ash and maple
• Tarkett also has a number of Swan-labelled products in its range.
44
A good environmental
choice also extends to
ownership of the floor.
Tarkett’s wooden floors
generate more than 5
times less emissions than the EU standard
”E1”. This is good for the air quality inside
your house. A wooden floor from Tarkett
is easy to lay, and easy to clean and look
after without the need for aggressive and
polluting chemicals. Our Proteco system
also simplifies maintenance, while its
strong protection guarantees a long life
and good value.
Our re-sandable wooden
floors have a long life. In
our range we have floors
which can be re-sanded
up to 5 times. As a result, a wooden floor from Tarkett can last
for generations. Once it is time to change
your floor, they are very easy to remove.
At the end of their useful life, the floors
can be recycled to produce energy.
With a clear
conscience
Thanks to strict controls and efficient use of raw materials we are able to offer Viva Sucupira.
A beautiful and exotic floor in chocolate shades.
Many beautiful floors are made from exotic species of wood. Unfortunately
there are some manufacturers and producers who have no scruples about
destroying rainforests without any consideration for the environment. But it
is possible to do this in an environmentally friendly way. In Africa Tarkett has
participated in a new way of felling that is in harmony with nature and with
the local population.
Maintaining the ecosystem
Sofala is a 45,000 hectare forest area in the
middle of Mozambique where modern and
sustainable forestry practices are being
applied. For each tree that is felled, a new
one is planted according to a carefully
thought-out system aimed at achieving
optimum results. In order to ensure regrowth
and maintain the ecosystem in the area,
work is planned in 30-year cycles. The work
is carried out by around 150 people from
the local population who are employed by
the company LevasFlor. LevasFlor was set up
in 2004 as a joint venture between church
dioceses in Sweden and Mozambique. Tarkett
contributes economic stability in the form of
an agreement with LevasFlor for the supply of
timber for floor production.
Msasa – a dark beauty
language, Shona. This type of wood is hard
and reminiscent of teak, which makes it ideal for
flooring. Its colour ranges from light brown
to honey and it has a beautiful lustre. This
results in beautiful floors which provide an
appealing and exciting contrast to the current
trend towards light and airy interiors. And
you can have a beautiful floor with a clear
conscience.
The species of wood that is felled in Sofala
is known as Msasa in the local African

The floor surface protection
system is called Proteco!
Tarkett has developed Proteco Lacquer, which is one of the most hard-wearing floor lacquers in the world.
46
Proteco Lacquer
Proteco Natura
Best in tests
Proteco Lacquer is one of the strongest lacquers in the world. Tarkett regularly carries
out tests to check the durability of Proteco
Lacquer, and time after time it has proven to be
extremely resistant to wear and tear and micro
scratches. Proteco Lacquer gives you a strong
wooden floor that retains its feel of real wood.
Proteco Natura is a matt lacquer. It is hardwearing and provides efficient protection
against wear. At the same time, it retains the
natural colour and feel of the wood, just like
an oiled floor. However, a matt lacquered floor
demands more maintenance than an ordinary
varnished floor.
Tarkett regularly carries out Taber tests on
the Proteco lacquers. The results show that,
according to the only official testing method
EN923509, Tarkett’s lacquers are the most
hard-wearing on the market.

hardwax oil
It is not enough to just use an ordinary wood
oil that penetrates deep into the wood and
provides good basic protection. The surface
also needs good protection against wear and
tear. Our new generation of hardwax oil provides a very strong surface protection against
wear and tear, dirt and stains.
The new Proteco Hardwax Oil is a product
that stems from nature and consists of sunflower, linseed, soya and thistle oils, as well
as a natural non-sticky dry wax from the candelilla shrub and carnauba palm. Our application technique ensures an even coating and a
dry surface. A matt surface attracts more dirt
and require a bit morecleaning than a glossy
finish. As oil does not seal the surface as a
lacquer does, a periodic maintenance around
every two or three years, depending on wear,
is recommended.

Technical design produces
floors you can trust
When you choose Tarkett you don’t buy just a
wooden floor. You also buy the expertise that
ensures that the floor is of a high quality. We
know that wood is a living natural material that
shrinks or swells depending on temperature and
humidity. We also know what to do to minimise
the effects of this. Tarkett has over 120 years’
experience and is one of the world’s leading
floor manufacturers, which gives our customers
confidence and an assurance of quality.
The fact that wood swells at high humidity and
shrinks at low humidity is something we take
into consideration throughout the production
process. To minimise movement in the finished
floor, the wood must first have reached its own
optimum humidity through drying. The drying
process can take up to a year before the result
is perfect. Tarkett’s floors are manufactured
with our climate in mind, which ensures many
years of problem-free use.
We also take into account the fact that wood
is a living material in the actual construction
of the floors. To minimise natural movements,
our wooden floors are built up in three layers.
Ensuring there are vertical annual rings in
the middle layer and alternating the direction
of the fibres in the three layers is an efficient
way of counteracting movement in the wood,
which creates a balanced floor. Our strong
glueless locking systems lock the boards tightly against one another without any gaps. You
can therefore be sure of getting a problem-free
wooden floor.
Wooden floors change colour
Some types of wood have a uniform appearance – others have large
natural variation. The appearance of the wood also varies according to
which type of log it comes from. Wooden floors change colour as the wood
ages. The wood is also affected by the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This
can clearly be seen if you move a rug that’s been down for a while. Some
48
types of wood, cherry for instance, change colour within a few months
and others, like oak and beech take a little longer. Cherry darkens, while
walnut gets lighter. Most other types of wood, such as oak, beech, maple
and ash, attain a more yellow nuance. There’s nothing “wrong” with
wood changing colour - it’s a process that is completely natural.

Now it's even
easier to lay a
Tarkett floor.
And it's fast ...!
5 important arguments for 2-lock:
1
2
3
4
5
Easy to lay – Anyone can do it.
Fast – Almost 50% faster than previous systems.
Quiet – No need for hammers. Appreciated by the neighbours.
Secure – 2-lock “makes” you do it right, right from the start.
Flexible – Easy to remove and lay in another room.
2-lock is available in the Epoque, Tango and Salsa families.
Three smart solutions from Tarkett make it easy to install your new
wooden floor without glue: Ultraloc, T-lock and the new 2-lock.
49
One weekend is all it takes
It is quick and easy to lay a real wood floor from Tarkett.
A weekend should be enough for an ordinary-sized room, kitchen or hall.
Laying the floor
Don’t forget a vapour barrier
Before you begin, ensure that the sub floor
is level, firm, dry and clean. The room where
you are laying the floor should have the right
temperature and humidity. This also applies to
the room where you are keeping the packs of
wood. The packs should not be opened until
immediately before installation.
To protect against humidity migration you
should apply a vapour barrier over the whole
sub floor during the installation for certain
types of floor. A vapour barrier is a polythene
foil that is laid with an overlap of at least 200
mm or is sealed with tape. Tarkoflex II combines an underlay and vapour barrier in one
product.
Underlay material
For a floating floor, that is when the floor is
joined together without being attached to the
sub floor, you should use an underlay material
to level the surface and reduce walking noise.
Use an underlay with a long life. A wooden
floor is hard, so to increase comfort it is important to install a shock-absorbent underlay.
Tarkofoam II and Tarkoflex II have been developed to meet these requirements.
Floating installation
You can install the new wooden floor directly
on top of the old one, regardless of whether
it is a wooden floor or a plastic floor. On
floors with a surface area greater than 12 x 20
metres, the floor should be glued to the sub
floor. When you install a floor the boards must
always be laid lengthwise in the room, and an
expansion gap must be left at all fixed points
such as walls, thresholds, pipes and steps.
There must be no contact between floors in
different rooms. Large areas of floor must be
divided up into smaller areas with the use of
expansion gaps.
Underfloor heating
The heating system has to be a self-limiting
system that provides even heating across the
whole floor surface. The surface temperature must not exceed 27°C. Floor heating can
cause cracks between the floor boards. Beech
and maple are more prone to movement than
other types of wood and underfloor heating is
therefore not recommended for use with these
floors.
Installation instructions are included
in every third floor pack. Detailed instructions can also be downloaded
from www.home.tarkett.co.uk If you
have any further questions, please
contact your nearest flooring retailer.
For a more comfortable floor
To walk and stand on a real wood floor is a wonderful feeling. But you can make this even more
comfortable by using Tarkofoam II or Tarkoflex
II underlay, which is rolled out before laying the
floor. This gives you a floor that is quieter and
even more wonderful to walk on. Tarkoflex II
is an underlay designed to reduce the sound of
footsteps and it also acts as a damp proof membrane. Tarkofoam II is not a damp proof barrier
but it reduces the sound of footsteps.

Mouldings and skirtings
Tarkett offers a broad range of accessories
to give your floor the perfect look.
Solid transition mouldings
Since wood is a living material you should
always leave a space – an expansion gap – of
1.5 mm per metre of floor, or at least 8–10
mm between the floor and walls, thresholds,
pipes, steps, fireplaces, stone floors, etc. The
expansion gap can be concealed using skirtings, mouldings and pipe collars.
19
58
Tarkett Combistar-profiler is an innovative
product in the Tarkett range. Transition profiles are available with real wood veneer surface and are really simple to fit. The fitting rail
is screwed down and the profile is fixed to the
rail. This approach allows for flexibility and
adjustments so you get a perfect fit between
the floor surface and the profile.
12
44
38
19
Clipstar veneer mouldings are available in a
large number woods. The system is extremely
user-friendly: the mouldings are easy to fasten
to the fixtures attached separately to the wall.
Matching surface finish
No matter whether you’ve treated the floor
with Proteco Lacquer or Proteco Natura, you’ll
find matching profiles, mouldings or pipe
collars.

Wooden floors can be used nearly everywhere
Tarkett wooden floors can be laid in most areas in the home. The only exception, for obvious reasons, is wet rooms. When you buy your new wooden floor you probably know what role the floor will play in your home.
Because different areas have different requirements in terms of design
and function. Our Guide provides you with comprehensive information
about which wood species, product ranges and surface treatments are
suitable for each room. The Guide is based on the pattern of movements
in the home for the average family, the hardness of the different wood
species, resistance to moisture, the thickness of the wear layer and the
surface finish of the floor. Ask your Tarkett dealer to help you find the
best solution for you.

How we measure the
hardness of the wood
The Brinell test is a simple way of measuring the hardness of the wood.
This test was developed by the Swedish engineer Johan August Brinell in
connection with the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900. It involves pushing a
small steel ball against the surface of the wood using a heavy load. The
Brinell number is determined by how large an indentation has been made
in the wood. The higher the Brinell number, the harder and more resistant
to indentation the material is.
Since wood is a living material with natural variations in structure,
the different parts of the wood vary in hardness. The Brinell numbers
given are average numbers based on several tests.

*Viva has a high Brinell number
because the hard core of HDF absorbs the force of the Brinell ball.
Despite the fact that the technical
reading is the same for all Viva
floors, in practice it is possible
to notice a slight difference in
hardness in the Viva collection,
depending on the type of wood
used in the veneer layer.
Grading – nature’s design
Wood is a living material and no two wooden floors are alike. To make it
easier for you to choose, we have grouped our large product range into
different gradings. To illustrate this you can see the different grad-
ings for Oak below. Your floor dealer can help you to look up floors in
Tarkett’s Grading Book or have a look at some real wood samples. This
gives you a better idea of how your floor will look once installed.
Select
Nature
Rustical/Antique
Robust
Select is our most uniform floor
series. It has only minor variations in colour and structure. The
floors in this range are discreet
and exude a feeling of calm.
The floors in this grading have
a more varied and expressive
appearance than Select. They
may have small knots, elements
of lighter sapwood and larger
variations in colour and structure
than Select floors.
This grading has a rustic appearance with an abundance of knots
and a good variation in colour
and structure.
Robust is a lively grading with
an exciting mix of lighter and
darker strips.
Collections
Epoque
Epoque is an exclusive 14 mm plank or 2-strip
floor that comes in four widths, 117 mm, 162
mm, 190 mm and 200 mm. It has a wear layer
of 3.6 mm and can be re-sanded 4-5 times.
Floors that have been treated with Proteco
Lacquer have a lengthwise mini-bevel on each
board, while the more natural appearance of
Proteco Natura is emphasized by a more robust
so-called maxi-bevel.
Tango
Tango is a 13 mm plank floor in widths of either
162 or 190 mm, and with a 2.5 mm thick wear
layer of real wood. This means you can re-sand
the floor 2-3 times. Tango comes with a minibevel and Proteco Natura matt lacquer finish.
Choose you new wooden floor according to preference, taste
and style. We can offer floors in many different types of wood
and of varying thickness.
Bravo
Viva
You should choose Bravo if you are looking for
a floor with a fairly lively appearance. In all
other respects this floor has the same qualities and characteristics as Salsa. Bravo comes
with both Proteco Lacquer and Proteco Natura
(matt lacquer).
Rumba
Tarkett’s hard-wearing Proteco surface finish
Rumba is a 13 mm 3-strip wooden floor with a
2.5 mm wear layer. This means you can re-sand
the floor 2-3 times.
Tarkett’s hard-wearing Proteco surface finish
A classic and traditional 3-strip floor. You can
get Salsa flooring in a number of different
types of wood with different surface treatments and characteristics. It has a wear layer
of 3.6 mm, which means you can re-sand the
