out of the loop?
Our theme at Foothill this school year is “Leaving a Legacy.” As a faculty we have
read and discussed some great books to prepare: “Mayflower” (focused on the Pilgrims and Native Americans who began this great Nation), “1776” (a review of the
miraculous events that occurred to begin our independent, free country), “Team of
Rivals” (a book about Abraham Lincoln and his example and ability to lead), and “A
Dream of Freedom” (an overview of the Civil Rights movement).
We hope to inspire our students to look to our great American history and remember the heroes and problem solvers that improved our country and world. Each of
these men and women left a legacy by being the best they could be and doing the
small and simple things each day that helped change the world for the better. We
want our students to leave their own legacy by living the Foothill Four: Courage,
Courtesy, Responsibility, and Respect; as well as Dr. B’s Challenge: Be Kind, Be Optimistic, Learn, Work Hard, and Live Life to the Fullest!

We invite you to join us in remembering our great American Heroes. Here are a few
events we have planned this school year to help us explore the past and be inspired
to leave our own legacy:

• Grade-level Patriotic Programs (more information will come as these

At Foothill, our purpose is to provide the best education possible for our students.
We have a long-standing record of high academic achievement. We accomplish
this by teaching the whole child. We desire to help all of our students to truly learn
to think so they can solve any problem they may face in school and in life. We are a
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) school. This means
we purposefully integrate our curriculum in a real-world context to make learning
applicable to students’ lives in order to prepare them for college and career experiences. We want our students to be creative, curious, and engaged in their learning.
We want them to be physically and emotionally healthy. At Foothill, we desire that
everyone that steps into our school feels welcome and important as they join our
Foothill Family.
We are grateful as a faculty to serve and teach your wonderful children. Thank you
for your support to our school and for raising such amazing kids. As we intentionally
partner in our roles as parents and educators I am confident Foothill Elementary will
continue to thrive and we will inspire each student to leave his or her own legacy!
Sincerely,
Dr. Backman (Dr. B.)

president’s message
Lisa Oliver
The PTA has chosen a theme for the 2015-2016 school year, which will also be the theme at the Fall Festival (our annual fall fundraiser), for student of the week, school spirit Fridays, and in various ways throughout the year by encouraging our kids to:
BE
EPIC
L E AV E A L E G A C Y
In all aspects of our student’s lives we want to provide opportunities and encourage the students at Foothill
to make this year EPIC.
How can Foothill students “Be Epic” this year?
A student who is “EPIC” this year will be a student who does THEIR very best. They may try to do something
extraordinary, heroic, grand or impressive – something greater than last year! As a PTA this year we want to
encourage students to make this year one that will be remembered for a long time.
The organization of the PTA gives us an opportunity to accomplish this goal. As we begin a new school year and you read this
message
BE from the PTA you may find yourself wondering, “what does the PTA do anyway?”
EPIC
First, PTA is a way to organize ourselves as community volunteers. If we did not have the organization that PTA provides, a lot of
great ideas wouldn’t be voiced, funded, or implemented. PTA provides a place and time to meet, deadlines to meet, and opportunities to raise funds, and direct communication with Dr. Backman.
L E AV E A L E G A C Y
Secondly, we try to provide opportunities for every child at some level. Even if your child does not participate in all the activities,
we are hopeful that he or she benefits from most. Some of the programs that PTA provides or helps provide are:
Weekly Art in Class
Book Fair (helps fund library)
Fall Festival
Yearbook
Knowledge Bowl
Music Programs
Student of the Week
Newsletter
Fuel up to Play 60
Room Parent Organization
Home Reading Library
Field day
Spelling Bee
Teacher Dinners and Appreciation
Box Tops
Reflections
Red Ribbon Week
3k Support
Battle of the Books
Because of the countless hours provided by volunteers from our “Fabulous Foothill Parents”, we are able to accomplish so much
more as an organized PTA than we could ever do alone. We greatly appreciate all the time and effort you already give.
If you have not done so already, please consider joining the PTA this year and, if possible, getting involved just a little bit more.
Anyone can join the PTA, attend our meetings (2nd Wednesday of every month from 1-2 p.m. in the Library), and make a difference.
We understand that we are all busy and appreciate anything you can do to help.
Who knows, maybe this year YOU can help our PTA truly “Be EPIC” and “Leave a Legacy” at Foothill!

ART PROGRAM
Foothill Elementary School’s art program is second to none, and this year will be no different! There are some exciting new supply changes that will greatly improve the process and help all art parents for the coming year. You do not
need any special skills to teach (except love for the kids!), so please sign up, with your teachers, at Back to School
night. It helps to sign up for a month block, since the lessons within a month build on each other. Even if you can
only help for one month during the year, you will make a huge difference.
Join us for the Art Parent training meeting on Thursday, September 24th at 10 am OR 1 pm in the faculty room. You can come to
either the morning OR afternoon meeting to get all the information you will need to be successful. The first art project will begin
the week of October 5th. Thank you, in advance, for your participation!!
CLASSROOM DONATIONS
Did you know that less that 50% of students send in a monetary classroom donation???
and
Did you know that when teachers don’t get donations for field trips, or supplies that they often take money out
of their own wallets to make sure that all of the wonderful traditions and activities at Foothill continue?
and
Did you know that you can send in an additional donations to your teacher if you have the means and by doing so your will
“sponsor” a student that may not be able to contribute this year?
and
Did you know that many times donations are not sent in simply because parents FORGET?
This is your reminder! If at all possible please donate financially to your classroom so
that our amazing, caring and hardworking teachers can carry out all of the wonderful
events and activities they have planned for your kids this year!
Thanks, Foothill PTA

Does your student love draw or take pictures? Do they like to write stories? Do they make up songs
or dances for fun? As children practice using their imagination to create and share their creations,
they improve their thinking skills and can improve their self-esteem as well. The PTA Reflections
program encourages and recognizes the continuous self-discovery process of children.
This year’s Reflections Program Theme, “LET YOUR IMAGINATION FLY” offers a broad canvas for students to create
in the categories of visual arts, photography, film production, literature, musical composition, and choreography. In
addition, Utah PTA will host a three dimensional category and a theater category.
Entries will be judged on creativity, interpretation of the theme and artistic merit, and are divided into grade divisions.
The divisions are Primary: preschool – 2nd, Intermediate: 3rd – 5th grades, and Middle/Junior: 6-8 grades. The Utah
PTA limits students to one entry per student per category. However, students are welcome to submit entries in
multiple categories.
All students should receive a flyer with general rules and an entry form attached later in September. Entries to the
Reflections Program are due at the end of October, more details to come. You can find more information and entry
forms at : http://www.utahpta.org/reflections
PLEASE NOTE: Entries that have not followed the rules will not be able to advance regardless of their artistic merit.
If you have questions about submitting your child’s work of art or would like to help with this program please contact
Sarah Warnick at [email protected]

NURSING
news
I hope you all have had a wonderful summer! I attended a conference during the summer and
wanted to share this important information with you to start out the school year!
PREVENTING THE ABUSE OF PRESCRIPTION AND OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUGS
Although adults and teens are turning away from street drugs, there’s a new threat from the family medicine cabinet: the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter(OTC) drugs. Unfortunately, Utah has one
of the highest pain pill abuse rates in the nation and more teens abuse prescription drugs than any illicit
drug except marijuana.
WHAT MEDICATIONS ARE ABUSED?
Prescriptions of abuse include painkillers, such as those drugs prescribed after surgery; depressants,
such as sleeping pills or anti-anxiety drugs; and stimulants, such as those prescribed for attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Teens are also abusing OTC (over-the-counter) drugs such as cough and
cold remedies.
WHAT INFLUENCES DRUG ABUSE IN UTAH COUNTY?
1. Education from medical professionals on the proper use, storage and disposal of prescription medications is lacking and can contribute to abuse.
2. Pain pills are too available-there are an estimated 7 million left over pain pills in Utah County homes (30 per household). This availability can influence adults and teens to abuse.
3. Community norms discourage alcohol, and illicit drug use, but often do not discourage the misuse or abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
WHAT ARE THE DANGERS?
There are serious health risks related to abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. A single large
dose of prescription or over-the-counter painkillers or depressants can cause breathing difficulty that can
lead to death. Stimulant abuse can lead to hostility or paranoia, or the potential for heart system failure
or fatal seizures. Even in small doses, depressants and painkillers have subtle effects on motor skills,
judgment, and ability to learn. Youth who continuously abuse prescription or over-the-counter drugs may
experiment with illicit drugs too.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT ABUSE?
1. Safeguard all drugs at home. Monitor quantities and control access.
2. Set clear rules for children and teens about all drug use, including NOT sharing medicine and always following the medical provider’s advice and dosages.
3. Be a good role model by following these same rules with your own medicines.
4. Properly conceal and dispose of old or unused medicines. For prescription disposal locations see: www.cleanoutthecabinet.org
5. Ask friends and family to safeguard their prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well.
6. For warning signs of abuse and intervention strategies see: www.theantidrug.com
