IN THIS ISSUE …
“THE DOG DAYS OF AUGUST” …
IN BAR HARBOR
By Heather Davis
“The Dog Days of August” are upon us – the
hot part of summer that typically occurs
during the period when Sirius, the Dog Star,
rises simultaneous with the sun. Under the
circumstances, I thought that it was only
appropriate to write our feature story on “The
Best Spots for Dogs & Kids on Mount Dessert
Island.”
In this edition, we also share our recipe for the
classic Maine Blueberry Pie. Our national fruit
is now in peak season. Stop along the road
and pick the berries straight off the bush. It
doesn’t get any fresher than that. In addition,
we share our monthly calendar of key events,
which features the Seaside Cinema.
THE BEST SPOTS FOR DOGS &
KIDS ON MOUNT DESSERT
ISLAND
By Heather Davis
As the mother of two active young boys and
one just as active dog, I have a few favorite
places that my family and I have enjoyed
AUGUST 2016
over the years. So, I thought that I would
share them with you, just in case you might
not be aware of them. How about you? Do you
have any favorite spots? I’d love to hear about
them!
1. Agamont Park – Located in the heart of
town, across the street from Geddy’s, it is a
favorite spot for dogs and families. Picnic on
the lawn, play Frisbee on the green, or just
take a leisurely stroll through the park,
overlooking the harbor with lobster boats,
yachts, and an occasional cruise ship.
TOP DOG SPOT – AN AFTERNOON
DIP IN LITTLE LONG POND
This is a must for any dog! It’s not a Bar Harbor vacation
without visiting Rockefeller’s Little Long Pond!
FEATURE STORY.
2. The Sandbar – At low tide, walk across the
natural sand bar and explore Bar Island, which
is located northwest of the town pier. It is
actually part of Acadia National Park. Just be
careful of the 12 foot tides, which can catch
the adventurous off-guard and the
unsuspecting by surprise.
3. Bar Harbor Shore Path – Built in 1880, this
shoreline path can be accessed at Agamont
Park. It is ½ to ¾ miles long with panoramic
views of the rocky coastline and beautiful Bar
Harbor estates (known as “cottages “), which
were summer homes of the rich & famous.

4. Eagle Lake – Accessed by taking Route 233
from Bar Harbor, Eagle Lake is part of Acadia
National Park. It is one of the largest bodies of
fresh water on Mount Dessert Island. Take the
6 mile carriage road around the lake and enjoy
the
gorgeous
views.
Fishing
and
kayaking/canoeing permitted, not swimming.
5. Little Long Pond – Located in Seal Harbor,
Little Long Pond is the top spot on our list for
both dogs and kids! It is comprised of 1,000
acres of Rockefeller family property, including
a scenic pond. Thanks to the Rockefellers
allowing public access to the land, it is an area
in which dogs can run free, off-leash, and
swim in the fresh water pond, while kids catch
bullfrogs. In conjunction with Acadia National
Park’s 100 year anniversary, David Rockefeller
Sr. has gifted the 1,000 acres of land around
Little Long Pond to the Land and Garden
Preserve for the public’s continued
enjoyment. Thank you, Rockefeller Family!
6. Jordan Pond - Formed by a glacier, Jordan
Pond offers a 3.6 mile shoreline path of scenic
mountainous beauty, with the option of
connecting to the famous carriage trails and
bubble rocks. After your hike, stop-off and
relax outdoors at the historic Jordan Pond
Restaurant for popovers and lobster stew
with the entire family, including your dog.
Enjoy spectacular views overlooking Jordan
Pond and the bare granite-peaked mountains
that surround it.
7. Sand Beach – Located on Park Loop
Road and discreetly nestled between the
rocky coastline and the bare granitepeaked mountains, this 290 yard long
beach is one of the unique treasures of
Acadia National Park – a spectacular
beach formed from crushed sea shells.
For the brave at heart, take a dip the
frigid Atlantic Ocean. It’s sure to wake
you up and get your blood flowing!
Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on
the beach from May 15th, through
September 15th, with the exception of
service dogs.
8. Cadillac Mountain – Cadillac Mountain
is Acadia National Park’s top attraction –
offering fabulous panoramic views of
Mount Dessert Island and many hiking
trails for hikers of all levels. One trail that
might be of interest is Cadillac North
Ridge Trail. In addition, check out Day
Mountain and Gorham Mountain, also
located in Acadia National Park.
9. Carriage Trails – Of course, there’s
always the famous Carriage Trails with
over 57 miles of paths to keep you busy.
10. Bark Harbor – After a day of hiking
and adventure, top-off your afternoon
with a fun stop at Bark Harbor in Bar Harbor
for a special treat for your best friend, while
the kids get ice cream nearby. Then, join us
for dinner at Geddy’s – a family-friendly
restaurant for kids of all ages!
THE CLASSIC MAINE BLUEBERRY PIE
By Heather Davis (Recipe)
LOOK AT THESE BLUE BEAUTIES!
Of course, you can’t visit Bar Harbor without
having a slice of fresh, homemade Blueberry
Blueberry
Pie! It’s a Muffins
local favorite! Of course, I prefer
mine “a la mode,” served warm and topped
with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can’t
beat it! It’s the perfect complement to a
Maine lobster. Please see recipe below (To
save time, I have suggested pre-made store
bought crust. Pillsbury is one that I like.)
Step 1 – Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Step 2 – Mix ¾ cup of sugar, 3 Tablespoons
of cornstarch, 1.4 teaspoon of salt, & ½
teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Sprinkle over
“fresh” blueberries.

Step 3 – Butter pie dish. Then, line with crust
(Pillsbury). Pour in 4 cups of “fresh”
blueberries (Step 2), dotted with 1
Tablespoon of butter. Place top crust over pie
– crimping and fluting edges. Place holes in
the top of crust with a fork.
Step 4 – Coat top of crust slightly with egg
and milk mixture. Then, sprinkle with sugar.
Step 5 – Bake Blueberry Pie on lower rack of
oven for 50 minutes, or until crust is golden
brown. Remove from oven. Let cool … and
ENJOY, with or without the scoop of ice
cream! You’ll now know why it’s a Maine local
favorite!
