dventure settled in Asturias many years ago… maybe that is why Adventure, Active and
Adrenaline all start with “A,” like Asturias. Adrenaline waits, dormant and patient, to be
liberated from the heart of its activities via land, water and air. Adventure has been a part of us and our
territory since time immemorial… and active tourism, the type of tourism that allows you to live it to the
max, has been around since it emerged in Spain at the end of the 20th century.

Long before all of that, the natural framework where all these active or adventure tourism activities take
place arose, among landscapes that look imaginary, dotted with towns and villages full of magnificently
conserved traditional architecture, mountains blanketed by multicolored forests and land covered in
permanently bright green fields. Asturias’ picturesque blankets of green are only broken up by the grey,
rocky formations topping the Cantabrian Mountains, the Picos of Europa are its centerpiece, and the blue
of its rivers and coast are outstanding. All you have to do is come to Asturias to see that you can do
active tourism inside a real-life postcard.
When it comes to truly becoming one with these experiences and with nature, what better way than
to sleep in it? Asturias has a wide range of tourist accommodations: Hotels, Aparthotels, Inns,
Guesthouses, Tourist Apartments, Vacation Homes, Rural Hotels, Rural Apartments, Country Homes, Rural
Tourism Areas, and, of course, Campsites and Hostels located in pristine areas which allow you to sleep in
direct contact with nature, become one with it, and wake up in paradise the next morning.
We encourage you to come and discover the #NaturalParadise. You will find your perfect
accommodation and adventure tourism company at www.turismoasturias.es

Cares Gorge Trail
Asturias pioneered rural tourism in
Spain and was also one of the first in
active tourism because it seems that
our territory was naturally created
to be the best real-life “playground,”
offering visitors age-old activities and
history among adventure sports: rafting,
hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing,
paragliding, canyoning, scuba diving,
surfing, etc.
And it is the perfect place to do the most
popular activities in this type of tourism:
rivering, zorbing, laser tag, etc.
A wide range of professionals make
up a network of more than 144
specialized companies that work
with professional guides and modern
equipment. They are in charge of
keeping you safe while taking you out to
do fascinating activities. You will always
be in good hands while experiencing
unforgettable active tourism activities.
With your family, your partner, your
friends… We provide the perfect
place and professionals, and you have
to decide how much fun you are
going to have while being active and
in touch with nature-because active
tourism is the best way to enjoy this
#NaturalParadise.
ASTURIAS, is a synonym of
gastronomy, culture, history,
heritage… and, of course,
nature. One third of our
province’s area is protected.

A
sturias is made up of approximately 10,600
square kilometers and six Biosphere Reserves.
It is also the Spanish province that contributes
the highest number of Biosphere Reserves to the
World Network of the MAB program and one of
the regions with the highest density of reserves
worldwide. It’s no wonder why we call this a Natural
Paradise.
Stunning landscapes where nature created the
best territory possible for active tourism. From
high mountains to sea level or even underground,
Asturias has all the ingredients you need to make
the perfect adventure cocktail: precious natural
environments to perform a vast list of land, water
and air activities during the four seasons of the year.

ur complicated topography has always
encouraged our love for walking. If you like
walking, becoming one with our landscapes and
appreciating them for all their little details, just like
we do- then you are in the right place.
We have an extensive network of Long Distance,
Short Distance and Local Paths which make up a
dense spider web of walking paths that allow you

Mountains from east to west. The GR.E-9, “Senda Costera”
(Coastal Path) is another option and runs along the coast.
Horseback riding or tricycle riding are other fantastic ways to
get to know the natural side of Asturias. The Green Paths are
also worth mentioning- they allow all types of people to get
to know Asturias. Paths on the coast, along rivers, in parks and
even accessible paths, etc. If you want to see old train tracks
recovered for use in active tourism, you have many to choose
from. From the “Senda del Oso” (Bear’s Path) to the path in Fuso,
from the Eo path to Valle de Turón, we recommend you leap
onto any of the 12 itineraries that the Green Paths of Asturias
have to offer.

Route on Quad Bike
Nature drives allow you to appreciate the great Asturian natural beauty from another viewpoint. With the added value of
explanations from the guides, all that remains is to choose the activity that best suits your tastes. Buggies and quad bikes are adrenalin packed, Segways are fun to use, while in a more relaxed way
excursions in off-road 4x4s take visitors closer to the countryside
and other natural and cultural attractions. They also solve the logistical problems involved when walking trails have their start and end
points located far apart.
APPROPRIATELY REGULATED AND
PASSING THROUGH SUITABLE AREAS,
with motorised activities you can discover
outstanding landscapes in a 4x4, buggy, Segway
or quad bike. Always showing the respect that
our nature deserves.
Don’t miss out on…
• The wide range of motorised activities in Picos de Europa. Choose
yours and enjoy the many offers from local companies.
• The Adventure Family Park circuit in the Villaviciosa Estuary.
• The Ribadesella coastline on quad bike, buggy or Segway.
• The Colunga coast on quad bike.
• ‘Bear Path’ (Senda del Oso) on Segway.

O
ur adventure tourist companies design their
activities with the maximum consideration
and respect for the environment, understanding
that this land is the main resource they need to carry
out their activities. As such, they offer us a different
way to enjoy ourselves, following a circuit or a trail,
exploring the forests, mountains or coastline. They
show us how to easily reach areas or places that
would otherwise have been hard to get to and in
one day can cover distances that would otherwise
have been impossible to accomplish. In short, they
bring everybody close to nature.

Rope Climbing (Via Ferrata)
Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes (Picos de Europa), or “El Picu,” as we like to
call it. Before going up into the mountains, you can get started at some of the
best rock climbing schools that exist throughout Asturian territory.
Accompanied by a harness and helmet, you can go underground to explore the
depths of our mountains and our soul with views of stalactites and stalagmites.
A long list of caves and chasms, some of which are enormous, will make
it hard for you to choose.
Don’t put your helmet down yet. Once you are back on land, you can check
out our vias ferratas, fixed rope route climbing, or, if you like speed, you could
try out land sailing. You will be taken by surprise.
If you are one of those people who loves big thrills, be daring and try bungee
jumping. Few activities will get your adrenaline pumping like this does.
There aren’t many activities as intensely linked to adrenaline as these are. So,
when the time comes to take out your maximum adventure spirit, there is
no better option than doing it alongside the professionals and landscapes of
stunning Asturias.
Don’t miss out on…
• In Asturias, you will discover climbing routes that adapt to
all levels, but, will you dare to climb one of the walls of the
Naranjo de Bulnes, the peak where rock climbing started in
Spain?
• The council of Quirós is waiting for you with more than 20
sectors y 300 climbing routes!
• Get inspired and tour one of our caves or chasms. You will
see that Asturias is beautiful inside… and out.
The Spirit of Adventure
IN ASTURIAS YOU WILL DISCOVER
THE ACTIVITIES that best define your
adventurous spirit.
I
t is in our blood. We are veterans in the world of active tourism. Our sport tourism is always developed by excellent
professionals and with all the safety measures and modern
equipment required to carry out these types of activities, for
example: rock climbing, caving or dry canyoning. But don’t worry,
if you aren’t an accomplished adventurer, you also have the great
opportunity to become one! We offer all levels of difficulty to
carry out these and other activities, and in the best possible surroundings.

Don’t miss out on...
• The descent of the Sella River. The 14
kilometres of the most celebrated river in continental Europe in an easy
descent in kayak, ideal for the whole
family. The neighbouring Cares and
Deva Rivers are not as famous but are
equally beautiful.
• Descend some of the most emblematic ravines such as Vallegón, Carangas,
Vivoli, Molina, Rubó, etc.
• Rivers such as the Navia, Nalón, Polea,
Quirós, Trubia and Narcea are waiting
for you so that you can discover from a
canoe some of the marvels of Western
Asturias.
As happy as a fish in freshwater...
Canyoning
THAT’S HOW YOU’LL FEEL DOING ANY OF
THE MANY FRESHWATER-BASED ACTIVITIES
ON OFFER IN THE PRINCIPALITY. From whitewater areas to tranquil flowing rivers, Asturias
offers you an unbeatable range of options with
fresh water as the common theme.
T
he many rivers in Asturias, such as the Cares, Deva, Sella, Nalón, Narcea, Navia and Eo, accompanied by other
smaller waterways and thousands of streams create the perfect combination if you’re looking for activities with a liquid
element as your adventure companion. This comes with the
professionalism and experience that has led to us being a leading international water sports destination from the very
start of adventure tourism.
Standing out for its size, at 4,900 square kilometres the NalónNarcea water catchment area represents almost half of the
area in Asturias.

#asturias #adventure
Asturian rivers share the common characteristic of being small but very
fast-flowing, owing to our steep mountainous terrain. This is what
opens the doors to adventures on the water.
A land where fast-flowing rivers allow for white water descents, 100% adrenaline aboard a rubber raft (rafting) or hydrospeeding. If you prefer to enjoy
the countryside beyond the river banks, don’t hesitate to experience it in
a more relaxed way from a water craft (canoe, kayak, etc.), or take part in
canyoning and follow the course of the streams through steep mountain
hillsides.
If you like to try new things, don’t miss out on ‘rivering’; a route along
the riverbanks that combines hiking, jumping into the water, traversing,
abseiling and even some potholing. Or paddle surf, not only reserved for
the sea, where on a surf board you can gently paddle through calm rivers,
accompanied by the melodious sounds of bird calls or the rumbling of
waterfalls. Or you can simply listen to the silence. You will be captivated
from the very first moment by experiencing our riverside woodlands and
the aquatic life from a different perspective.

pen to the Cantabrian Sea, you will enjoy superb coastal settings created by the Asturian
plains, idyllic landscapes that can be contemplated,
for example, from a sea kayak, and above all some
magnificent waves that make up some of the most
famous surf spots nationally and internationally. Who
knows, you may even come across Espumeru swimming among the waves, the playful spirit of the surf in
Asturian mythology,
Paddle Surfing
You can also take part in more relaxed activities such
as paddle surf, sailing etc. or enjoy the seabeds that will
surprise you. In a bathing suit or a wetsuit, the sea off
Asturias can be enjoyed at any time of the year.
Alone, as a couple, with the family or as a group, you’ll
find sea-based activities for all tastes. You’ll also discover the activity that you need at any point in time. For
example, if you want to relax taking part in activities
such as sports fishing from a boat, or if you want to
de-stress at a more frenetic pace. Or simply for pure
enjoyment. Water skiing, kite surfing etc., there is so
much to choose from and always with the guarantee
of our professional guides and instructors.
The ports of Gijón, Lastres (Colunga), Ribadesella, Cudillero, Bañugues (Gozón) and El Puntal (Villaviciosa) are
excellent departure points from which to discover the
surprising Asturian coastline aboard a motor launch
or sail boat.

rom the softness of the Green Paths to the
paths that are best enjoyed on an all-terrain
bicycle, using your legs’ maximum potential, battling on prestigious, tough mountain slopes, the
map of Asturias offers paths and possibilities
for all tastes and levels.
On top of Long Distance paths that you can ride
on your ATB, such as the Camino de Santiago
(“Camino del Norte” (Nothern Route) and “Camino Primitivo” (Primitive Route) or large sections
of the “Senda Costera” (Coastal Path), we have
a few other Long Distance paths that are ideal
for biking. This is the case for the Cycling Loop of
the Central Mountains of Asturias, which is a demanding circular loop that goes through natural
environments such as the Aramo Range, in the
Las Ubiñas- La Mesa Natural Park, the Carisa Paths
or the Protected Landscape of the Mining Areas.
An all-terrain bicycle is ideal to get to know
our landscapes, history, gastronomy, villages,
traditions… either calmly or while facing the demanding inclines and long descents, conquering
mountain passes that have formed a strategic
part in our history, appreciating the silence of our
forests, accessing lookouts that are authentic natural balconies, etc. Pleasures and sensations that
are only reserved for those who want to pedal
through Paradise.

quickly transforms, in the blink of an eye, from the wildest
mountains to the smoothest valleys… all of this can only be admired
from above. And wait until you see our beaches and cliffs from a bird’s
eye view.
You can choose between paragliding or paragliding with the help of
a motor (paramotoring and powered paragliding trikes -with a motor
and wheels-) to fly over the coast and the mountains.
You can also depart from high mountain areas, taking off from more
than 1,000 meters. And then comes the eternal question: coast or
mountain? Here is your answer: both.
Do you want to feel like a Bird of Paradise? If you do not have any
air experience, you can experience a two-seat flight, accompanied
by a professional instructor. All you have to do is go for a short run off
the side of a mountain and you will soon be soaring through the air.

THE SPORTS PRESS SHARE THEIR
PERSONAL EXPERIENCES IN ASTURIAS
Raid “Guardianes del Paraiso”
(Guardians of Paradise”)
Well known sports journalists come to Asturias to experience at first-hand the adventure
of descending from the mountains to the
sea in half a day, or mixing traditional sports
and pastimes in some of the most authentic
corners of the Principality. Experiences that
you can relive in our channels and emulate
at any time of the year, accompanied by the
best professionals.
he main goal is to share, but overall, to have fun. Canoeing, hiking,
archery, mountain biking, caving, golf… are some of the activities
that journalists such as José Joaquín Brotons (COPE), Mónica Marchante
(Canal +), Nico Abad (Cuatro) or Juan Carlos Rivero (TVE) have been
able to do in the two editions of the “Guardianes del Paraíso” Raid.
In the words of one of the Asturian participants, Rodríguez G. Fáez (Gol
TV reporter), “during the Raid, I could see see how my collegues were
amazed by Asturias. The majority of them have come back since then
and all of them are looking forward to the annual edition to come
back and do the things that they have only done here. They love the
landscapes, the gastronomy, the people…
And that, for an ex-pat Asturian like me, is my confirmation that
Asturias is paradise on earth.”
The images of their adventures and misfortunes will never be able to
describe everything that happened during the two days of the Raid,
but they will definitely inspire you to organize your own adventure
weekend. We invite you to watch it on our Youtube channel (www.
youtube.com/asturias) and to copy them while accompanied by our
professionals (www.turismoasturias.es/EN/active-tourism).
Active Testimonials
“Untouched mountains, spectacular valleys, and all within just a few
kilometers of fantastic beaches. What impressed me the most was how
green everything was, and the feeling of being surrounded by wild
nature that invites you to do sports outdoors.” Juan Carlos Rivero,
commentator at Estudio Estadio (TVE).
“Asturias has the ideal scenery for biking, both in the mountains and on
the road. Asturias also comforts travelers with a special type of gastronomy.” Eduardo Chozas, ex-cycling professional, technical director
of “Ciclismo a Fondo” and commentator at Eurosport.
“Asturias is an earthly paradise for hiking and biking lovers. You could
spend an entire year experiencing different paths and never repeat the
same one twice. Asturias will always surprise you. For me personally,
I love to “Breathe Asturias.” Ricardo Sierra, journalist at Canal +. “I
go back to Asturias all the time and when people ask me why I choose
Asturias, my answer is an easy one: I am a ‘Guardian of Paradise.’ And I
love to brag about it.”
“Asturias is a true natural adventure park and its main appeal is that
everything is authentic. You can recharge your batteries by simply
walking or hiking through the Oscos, Taramundi and its surrounding
areas. That is why the trekking with poles trip, in my opinion, is one of
the best ways to soak up the unbeatable Asturian paradise. The series
of curves while biking was also a huge adrenaline rush and having my
first canoeing experience surrounded by that beautiful green, blue and
yellow scenery was truly luxurious.” Natalia Ayala, journalist at RNE.
“The sound of its waters, the taste of its foods, the smell of its land, the
view of its landscapes and the feel of its history took over my senses.
Going back to Asturias makes sense.” Fernando Ramos, commentator
at Estudio Estadio (TVE1).
