Volunteers— It’s All About Business!
PFEW is a truly one-of-a-kind program that is marking its
37th anniversary of teaching Pennsylvania high school
students (juniors and seniors) to both understand and
celebrate why “free enterprise” is vital to the American way
of life. The Chamber is proud to support PFEW to give our
local students this eye-opening experience. WCCCC
encourages our member companies and civic organizations
to provide sponsorships for our students and, if possible,
volunteers for the sessions. Each student wears the name of
their sponsor throughout the week and also corresponds

Coatesville Centennial April 27, 2015
Update on COBRA and ACA
Coatesville City will celebrate its century long history as the
only city in Chester County with eight month’s worth of
centennial festivities beginning in April. “This is an
opportunity to shed a very positive light on Chester County’s
only city,” said Frances Sheehan, President and CEO of
Brandywine Health Foundation and co-chair of the Centennial
Planning Committee. She said it’s also an “opportunity to
highlight (the city’s) special history.” From April to December,
dozens of events will be highlighted as a part of Coatesville’s
100th anniversary as a city. Community organizations will get
a chance to participate by hosting an event any time between
April and December.
By Karl Klingmann II, President, Penn Rise Benefits, Inc.
Coatesville Centennial Logo Contest — Please make sure the
kids you know are aware that the Coatesville Centennial Logo
Contest deadline is March 31; an anonymous donor has come
forward with a $100 prize for the winning entry:
http://www.artpartnersstudio.org/news.html. One winning
design will be chosen and featured on all Coatesville
Centennial event materials during 2015.
Thank you from the
Coatesville Centennial Planning Committee!
For events that prompt
both COBRA and ACA
eligibility, individuals can
choose between COBRA or individual coverage. One thing to
keep in mind is that COBRA is ongoing and timely COBRA
notices are essential – even when individuals can obtain
individual coverage.
If you have a qualified beneficiary participating in COBRA, the
ACA requires them to remain on COBRA until the COBRA
benefits are exhausted or they are eligible for a special
enrollment period. Failure to follow this may cause the
beneficiary to be uninsured for an extended period.
If they simply stop paying COBRA premiums, they cannot
obtain individual coverage until the next open individual
enrollment period. That could be a month or more away.
Penn Rise Benefits, Inc. can find out if they qualify for a
government subsidy and enroll in a plan. If the individual
does not qualify for a subsidy, we can enroll them directly
with the insurance carrier.
Please familiarize yourself with the new ACA guidelines. If
you have any questions or need further clarification, please
do not hesitate to contact me.

The Future of Western Chester County
Shelia Fleming showed the progress of the Greenway and
Trails development projects. Rejuvenating both the heritage
and the natural resources of our region is an essential element
of our chamber and county’s shared strategy. Shelia stated at
the end of the event, “The room certainly seemed to be
sizzling today!”
Randy Waltermyer discussed the Route 30/82 intersection
project and also spoke about our chamber’s Transportation
Study. The completed Route 30 Study will be an important tool
for insuring that Penndot, DVRPC and the various other
agencies fund the necessary improvements to Route 30 in a
timely manner and in a manner consistent with the plans of
the adjacent municipalities.
Greg Prowant spoke on behalf of the Western Chester County
Council of Governments adding that the work done regionally
accomplishes more than municipalities working individually.
Joe Viscuso showed plans for the Coatesville Train Station while
providing answers to this long awaited project.
Jim DePetris shared his firm’s plans for the properties they
have purchased which include the Lipkin’s Furniture store and
the bank building on the corners of Business 30 and S. First
Avenue.
Diane Fasnacht explained the Chamber’s updated website

How Helping Others Can Help Your Business
By Judith Lee, Communication Works Now
Six years ago, our economy in the throes of the Great
Recession, I found myself in a place similar to many other
experienced business professionals: I needed to reinvent
myself. The business I had been in for more than two
decades was no longer viable, and jobs at any level were
nonexistent.
My solution was to create a new business. I had no funds
and no local contacts or connections. What I did have, along
with my skills, was time. With that, I discovered a marketing
technique that is working to build my business to this day:
Volunteerism.
I became a volunteer in organizations that serve small
businesses (Chambers of Commerce and SCORE), which are
my target market. I formed relationships, I became known, I
demonstrated my skills, and I developed a clientele. Yes,
giving away my time has led to being able to charge for my
time, and has been the entire basis of my new business.
What’s more, being a volunteer has put a positive spin on my
outlook, and I believe, how others perceive me. It’s truly a
win-win, and the more I look into it, the more I recommend
volunteerism to other small businesses.
Engaging in activities that support your community can
produce tangible rewards. Some 85 percent of U.S.
consumers have a more positive image of a company when
they know it contributes to a cause that they, too, care
about.
Specifically, volunteer work can:
• Build and strengthen interpersonal relationships —
Getting involved in a non-profit endeavor puts you in
contact with people you might never meet otherwise.
Some of these individuals will have knowledge and
experience that may prove helpful to your business.
They could even become valuable mentors or advisers.
• Create indirect marketing opportunities — The
relationships you make as a volunteer can generate
business simply through word of mouth. The people
volunteering alongside you may need or know others
who need your product or service. Once they get to
know you and your offering, they can also recommend
it to their friends, family members, and colleagues.
• Get publicity — Promote your partnership with a local
charity or participation in an upcoming event on your
March / April 2015
website, in your store or office, and on any marketing
collateral. A client of mine ran a Facebook contest that
benefited a local charity. The charity reciprocated by
promoting the contest to their large following. We got
coverage in social media and the local press. Once
again, a win-win.
• Strengthen your brand — A business engaged in
volunteer work often finds its brand enhanced because
of the reputation it gains from doing something beyond
making a profit. People tend to remember (and buy)
brands associated with community good will.
• Expand your knowledge — Volunteer work offers
insights into the needs of others while enabling you to
grow as an individual. The increased empathy you
develop for people in need broadens your
understanding of what your customers want and need
as well.
• Make for a happier workforce -- When employees are
engaged in community activities that leverage their
professional skills through volunteerism, they are
happier and better connected with their colleagues,
which benefits the entire company.
• Tax benefits — You can claim your volunteer time and
monetary and in-kind contributions to nonprofit groups
on your income taxes. These deductions could
significantly reduce the money you owe.
Doing good work in the community is its own reward, but
there are positives for business, too. In short, everyone
benefits from these efforts.
Join the chamber and our past president Adrienne
MacKenzie in our collaborative effort with Lula Defersha
from the Coatesville Youth Initiative (CYI) in expanding our
second annual Make a Difference Day. We will be including
Honey Brook, Parkesburg and continue our work in
Coatesville. Our first planning meeting will be held on April
14th at 9:30am in the Mill Conference room of the Lukens
Executive Building, 50 S. First Avenue Coatesville. Please
rsvp to Adrienne at [email protected] if you would like
to join in planning our Make a Difference Day.

Coatesville Project
By Sarah Alderman
THE COATESVILLE PROJECT is an interactive, nonlinear documentary that tells the story of a city
and its people through film, photography, and
community storytelling collaborations. It is meant
to be a tool for community empowerment and a
place for public discourse; a home-base for
everyday folks to discuss the city’s efforts to
revitalize and the obstacles that hold these efforts
back, and to highlight initiatives that have
achieved success.
This project is for the PEOPLE not for the
POWERFUL.
Through a partnership with storytelling website
Cowbird.com, participants will craft their
Coatesville stories, and include a photograph (or
series of photos), and they will tag the story
“CoatesvillePride.” Stories that meet project
criteria will then be collected by Sarah Alderman,
the Project Director, and will eventually be
featured on the documentary website. For more
information please contact; Sarah Alderman at
