Finding and Attracting Fleet Work
MRTINTLNO.11-13
20
When it comes to finding fleet work in your area, you need to think of every
possible business that utilizes a fleet of vehicles, whether it is your local
plumber, electrician, construction company or even the local automotive
jobber.
When beginning your search for fleet companies, keep in mind that the
yellow pages and/or chamber of commerce local directory are very useful
resources, but in today’s technology driven world, you can get the same
information with the click of a mouse; Google. To get started on your
search all you need to do is visit Google’s homepage and click on ‘maps’ as
so…
Once the Google Maps page comes up on screen, type in the city/province
you are in, and what type of fleet you are looking for (as an example we will
use: Burnaby, BC plumbers). Once you have enabled your search you will
get results that look something like this:
MRTINTLNO.11-13
21
As you can see, your results will show you not only locations of these
business but information such as the phone number and a link to their web
page if there is one. From this point on you need to start building a company
profile with any and all information you can gather, sometimes the only
information available is the address and phone number of the company and
other times you can get names of almost every employee that works there.
It will vary between companies what information you can get, but don’t
worry this is only the first step.
Below, is a sample company profile that you can use, once you have
completed this sheet with as much information that you can gather and you
are ready, contact the company to set up a meeting to discuss what it would
take for them to become a customer. Remember it may take a few times for
you to get through, so don’t give up if they don’t agree right away.

Local Fleets
These are the fleets in your surrounding area. Any business that has a fleet
of vehicles, whether it’s a small fleet or a large fleet, will have vehicles that
will need to be serviced and repaired.
You will be the one with the most influence over these fleets, as you are
there in the city where they operate their business. It is your job to figure
out what these businesses are looking for when it comes to getting their
transmissions serviced and repaired. Consider price, convenience or quick
turn over time, there is always a reason that the consumer is going to the
competition and not you. Arranging a meeting to provide a fleet evaluation
is a great way to start the program off in the right direction! Work with your
Regional Manager to develop the right strategy and get started today!
Sourcing out new fleets
When targeting a potential new fleet account you must first do your research
before you approach the company. The internet is your best tool for this, it
gives you access to the information you need to start a profile sheet on your
targeted fleet company.
In today’s technology-driven world almost every company has a web site;
this is a prime data base of information for your research. Once you have
found the company website that you have targeted you need to look for as
much information that their website will provide you.
If you are stuck on businesses in your area that would use fleet vehicles, you
can always use the yellow pages as an information database. You will find a
complete listing of company in your area and from there you can start your
research on the internet.
Your regional business manager is there to assist you in any way when it
comes to finding new accounts in your area. They are available to sit down
you to go over what research you have done and potentially help you
strategize ways to penetrate the fleet company you are focused on.

Municipal Fleets
Municipal or City Fleets are potentially a great stream of work for your
location. In order to earn this business, work with your Regional Business
Manager to build a contact sheet (see sample). Your next step is to derive a
strategy to contact the officer(s) responsible for the assignment of these
services and set up a meeting to evaluate the fleet and the needs of the
organization.

Special Events
Engaging your customers in your business never hurts. One thing you can
do to engage your potential new wholesale and fleet customers is to throw an
event held at your shop. Events that you can hold to engage your potential
customers in your business are:
Appreciation BBQ:
Hosting a BBQ for your current and potential customers is something that
will make an impression. It show’s that you are appreciative of their past
business and that you hope to do business with their company again in the
future.
When hosting this BBQ, it is a good idea to have a contest where your
guests enter to win a prize. You do not have to give away anything
extravagant, it could be as simple as a free transmission flush or a gift
certificate to a local restaurant.
Also, make sure you have staff on hand at the BBQ to mingle with your
guests. This allows your staff to interact with the customer, informing them
of the shop and services that is provided by your Mister Transmission
Franchise.
Car Wash:
Hosting a car wash for current and potential customers is a great way to get
them to your franchise. Of course, you may do this as a complimentary car
wash or if you like, you can turn it into a charity car wash, as long as there is
an appropriate goal for the charitable donations.
Advertise your car wash specifically to fleet business that you are targeting
as customers. Every company with a fleet likes to see their vehicles well
maintained and clean. By showing them you understand this, they may just
think of your franchise the next time they need repairs to their fleet vehicles.
Car Care Clinics:
Car Care Clinics can be hosted for the fleet drivers of the company you have
contracted with and are targeting as customers. Not everyone is car savvy
and considering fleet vehicles essentially belong to no one, the maintenance
tends to lack a little. By hosting a clinic showing the fleet drivers little
things about the car such as; making sure fluid levels are topped up, what to
MRTINTLNO.11-13

do if by chance they get a flat tire, also what certain dash lights mean could
be very helpful to someone who knows nothing about cars.
You will also be pleasing the organization who owns the fleet vehicles.
Teaching their employees a few basic things to maintain the fleet vehicle
will extend the life of the vehicle.
You can also host car clinics for the public not just your customers, by doing
this you show your potential customers that you are active in your
community.
AIA Canada is a great organization to partner with for you Car Care Clinic,
as the regularly host these clinics. They provide a step by step guide as to
what you should be doing and thinking about during your clinic.
Open House:
Hosting an open house is a good way to show potential customers you are
willing to let them in your shop, showing them the process of fixing a
vehicle. By doing this you are gaining the trust of the company.
There are many things you need to consider when you hold an open house;
there is detailed planning that goes into an event like this. It will also be
very helpful to enlist the efforts of your regional business manager, as they
are there to help you build your customer base. Some things to consider:
Industry Guests: It is always a good idea to invite representatives of the
companies you partner with, such as your local jobber. By having the sales
team from your affiliates on hand at your open house, you are giving your
customers a first hand opportunity to get familiar with the company that is
essentially providing them a service as well.
Invitations: who will you be inviting to your open house, how you will go
about inviting your guests. You can have invitation printed up professional
by a company who specializes in this area, or if you are keeping the open
house toned down you may wish to send invitation by e-mail.
Door Prizes: When hosting an open house for your customers have door
prizes for the event, something that portrays your local market or even the
cliental you are hosting.

Displays/Tent: having visuals at your open house gives your guests
something to look at and potentially ask questions about. Work with your
regional business manager to set up the use of the Mister Transmission event
tent and some display item’s. Your display should include items such as
filter kits, transmission fluid and you can even have a rebuilt transmission on
display.

Catering: When hosting an event such as an open house you must provide
food and beverages for your guest’s. What type of food and drink you serve
is entirely up to you, but keep in mind that having desert is essential.
Enlisting the help of your local baker is a good idea as they have the tools to
design a cake specialized for your Mister Transmission franchise.

Media/Political Aspect: having media at your event is a great way to raise
your community awareness. Contact your local newspaper and/or news
channel to do coverage on your event. Also, contact city hall to invite either
the mayor or any politician representing your area to your event

Reason for Open House: You must have a reason for holding an open house,
whether this is to show off a recently updated showroom, or perhaps to
celebrate your franchisee’s anniversary. Whatever your reason for holding
your open house is, you need to advertise this celebration to the appropriate
guest list.

Tips for planning your event
1. First, you need a clear understanding of your event and what you
hope will be accomplished by the event.
2. Setting goals is a major part of the planning process. How many
people do you expect to participate in the event? Also, what would
you like the attendees to gain from your event?
3. Set your event budget. What amount of money would you like to
spend on supplies such as food and drink, or any sort of merchandise
that you will be giving away?
4. Your next step is selecting your date. Pick a date that coincides with
the type of event you are hosting. If it’s a BBQ for your customers
make sure to plan it during lunch time. If you are holding an open
house, perhaps just after closing would be the most suitable time.
5. Consider your staffing. Which of your staff, if not all, will you have
working this event and what will they be doing? Also, if it is during
work hours will you shop continue to operate?
6. Set up: will you be borrowing the Mister Transmission tent for your
event and if so where on your property will you be setting up?
7. Marketing: how are you going to market your event to your expected
attendee’s?
8. Make sure to include your regional business manager.

Demographics
Your Regional Business Manager has access to the National Post Canadian
Demographics catalogue. Each major city listing provides us with
demographic information that includes the population of the city, the vehicle
population, and more importantly the demographics of registered motor
vehicles in your market. A sample has been provided below. In addition,
this information can be used to produce comparative market studies. Please
contact your Regional Business Manager to receive the demographic
information for your market.
