A MESSAGE FROM LYNN MAWUNGANIDZE
PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD
This year truly embodies what we can accomplish together and
how all the seemingly little things can come together to create
impacts beyond our wildest imaginations. Last year, we explored
the“WHY”and it is clear that our collective whys continue to push
each and every one of us forward. From one family’s inspiration,
hard work of five staff members, a couple hundred researchers
and a few thousand dedicated volunteers and donors, 2014
stands as the hallmark of the impact of each of our collective
determination.
This report will share the numerous ways that efforts by each
and every one of you have contributed to great successes in
all that we strive for. I am confident that you will also find hope
and encouragement in knowing that everything you do for
the Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC) is impactful, even
when you do not see it. On behalf of the BCSC board and staff,
I thank you for all your time, effort and commitment; and look
forward to continue working together in the years ahead.

A MESSAGE FROM MARSHA DAVIDSON
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
When you flip through the colourful pages of the 2013-14 annual
report you will notice a pink ribbon winding its way through each
page. The pink ribbon has been a symbol of the breast cancer
cause for many years, starting in the U.S. in the 90’s. We wanted
to use this symbol to illustrate how different aspects of the Breast
Cancer Society of Canada are tied together beautifully, resulting
in a robust organization with significant impact.
We start with the leadership team, our Board of Directors, a
talented and dedicated group providing guidance and support.
On to the staff, responsible for making it all happen. We are
small in numbers but we get a lot done! Follow the pink ribbon
to our volunteers; what a fantastic group of people! Then on to
our community events, organized by dedicated and passionate
people. Next on to our signature events: Dress for the Cause,
Mother’s Day Walk and check out the upcoming event, BUST
a MOVE Toronto. Then on to a sampling of our corporate
partnerships, raising funds and allowing the Breast Cancer
Society of Canada to associate with well-known national brands.
At the end of the pink ribbon journey we arrive at the details
around research funded by the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.
This part of the report illustrates the significant impact generated
by all of the people and activities along the pink ribbon. Together,
they form this grassroots organization.
In 2013-14, for the first time ever, the Society raised in excess of $2
million gross revenue. We kept our expenses in line with previous
years and therefore every extra dollar raised will be directed to
breast cancer research. The Society is very proud to state that
over the last five years an averaged 64% of our annual gross
revenue has gone to support breast cancer research in Canada.
It is important to us to ensure donor dollars are directed to high
calibre breast cancer research as soon as possible.
In closing, we truly hope you enjoy our pink ribbon theme in
this year’s annual report. None of what we do would be possible
without the continued support of the volunteer board members,
the passionate third party organizers, the multitude of event
volunteers, the generous corporate partners and most of all –
you, the donor. Thank you.

OUR VOLUNTEERS
WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT THEIR SUPPORT
The Bosom Buddy volunteer program is one of the most valued
resources of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. We are very
fortunate to have two dedicated groups.
Our local branch keeps us efficient and well organized; they
tackle everything from office tasks to event planning.
Our off-site volunteers have evolved into an important arm of
our organization. They allow us to have a presence in many
communities. This year we recruited a new and enthusiastic
group in the London area that were invaluable as we organized
our first Mother’s Day Walk in their community.
For those of you in the Greater Toronto Area we have something
new coming your way: BUST a MOVE Toronto. For this new
event planned for March 28, 2015 we will need over one
hundred volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure this
fitness extravaganza is a success!

MOTHER’S DAY WALK
A DAY OF CELEBRATION
The annual Mother’s Day Walk is a cherished part of the Breast Cancer Society
of Canada’s history. Twenty three years ago Pam Greenaway-Kohlmeier’s
family and friends walked together in her honour, raising $2,000.00.
For 12 years, cleo, the women’s clothing and apparel store, has been our
national partner for this exciting, pink-powered event supporting breast
cancer research in Canada. London was added to the outdoor line-up with
Sarnia, Mississauga, and Edmonton . Over 65 indoor walks and activities were
held at cleo malls and plaza locations.
The 2014 Mother’s Day Walk was a true celebration! A very special thank you
to all who participated and donated, the cleo staff, their loyal customers, event
sponsors and volunteers. With your dedication and generosity we surpassed
the $1 million milestone!

PAM GREENAWAY-KOHLMEIER
MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
Huron Oaks in Brights Grove, ON was home to our 23rd annual golf tournament on Friday
June 20th. A tasty pizza lunch was served prior to teeing off at noon. 18 rounds of golf
included games and contests throughout the afternoon. While appetizers and a delicious
dinner were served, golfers and guests were updated with research information. Through sponsorships, corporate donations, and
participants, the tournament was a remarkable success raising over $46,000. Hats off to our golfers, sponsors and volunteers for
making our day exceptional. A special thank you to Huron Oaks staff, without them this event wouldn’t have been possible.

DRESS FOR THE CAUSE
SIXTEEN YEARS STRONG
For sixteen years, the Breast Cancer Society of Canada has hosted this annual event in October to
celebrate breast cancer awareness month. Businesses, clubs, schools and organizations of all sizes
donate, dress their office, dress themselves, DRESS for the CAUSE and HAVE FUN hosting pinkthemed activities. All registered participants receive a package assisting with their fundraising
initiatives.
All DRESS for the CAUSE participants make a difference. When thousands of people come
together for a common cause, they make a significant impact. Millions have been raised for
life-saving Canadian breast cancer research.

COMING TO TORONTO IN MARCH 2015
BUST a MOVE™ unites hundreds of women and men for an unforgettable day of fabulous
fitness sessions, thumping beats, crazy costumes and celebration.
Participants sign up as singles or with a team, commit to raising $1,000 per person and
celebrate their accomplishments on event day with six exercise sessions. Event day is truly a
celebration of the community coming together for a life-saving cause.

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is committed to progressing breast cancer research in Canada. From the beginning, we have
focused our efforts on seed funding for translational research. The Society proudly funds high-caliber research teams that are located
near patient treatment clinics.“This team approach fosters collaboration between researchers and clinicians,”says Dr. Ann Chambers,
who is the Canadian Research Chair in Oncology and Director of the Pamela Greenaway-Kohlmeier Translational Breast Cancer
Research Unit.“Translational research is driven by the needs of breast cancer patients and focused on using basic research findings
to benefit patients.”
SEED FUNDING
The Breast Cancer Society of Canada makes significant contributions to innovative research projects needing the upfront capital
necessary to gather preliminary findings. These findings are then used to apply for federal research grants.
These projects give the latest ideas a chance to be fully examined, supporting a consistent push by Canadian researchers to
eradicate breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer Society of Canada has donated more than $2.89 million to London Health Sciences Foundation’s Translational
Breast Cancer Research Unit. From this donation, $430,000 has been dedicated to seed funding, enabling the preliminary findings to
secure more than $4.5 million in external grants.
TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH
Translational research is the collaborative process in which information acquired through research is used to develop new medical
treatments and the implementation of those medical treatments into clinical practice.

breast cancer research in Canada which allows us here in Alberta to provide grants for“seed funding.”Young

funds can apply for funding for their demonstration or pilot project. Once the project is up and running the
investigators can then apply to other agencies for continuation funding with a base of data supporting their

STUDYING THE GROWTH OF HER2-POSITIVE
METASTATIC BREAST CANCER TO THE BRAIN
“Hello! My name is Donna Murrell – I’m a TBCRU trainee and a PhD candidate in the Department of Medical Biophysics at Western
University. I work with Dr. Paula Foster – a world leader in cellular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – and have really enjoyed my
first year in the lab!”
“We study the similarities and differences in the growth of breast cancer that is HER2-positive and
metastatic to the brain. Through the use of cutting-edge experimental MRI approaches, we are able
to monitor individual cancer cells and metastatic growth in the brain over time. Some tumours are
“leaky”and some are not, which we believe may influence how tumours will respond to therapy.
Both types can exist in the brain at the same time and tumours can switch from not leaky to leaky as
they grow. This makes detection and treatment strategies very difficult. Understanding the naturally
occurring differences in tumour development is important for advancing detection strategies and
treatment options so that we can impact patient survival.”

enabled me to achieve some very exciting things in the last couple of months.”

A MESSAGE FROM DR. GREG CZARNOTA
“Microbubbles are microscopic agents that can perturb the blood vessels inside tumors. When
these bubbles are put into a beam of ultrasound, they resonate, making the tumors very sensitive
to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. We see an increase in accumulation of chemotherapy by up
to 20 times. With radiation, we find the tumors become 20% - 40% more sensitive to the effects of
radiation. The $1 million investment by the Breast Cancer Society of Canada is going to allow our
team to scale up these treatments by moving them out of the laboratory, into the breast cancer
patients.”
