European Environmental Official Visits BERC
The Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC) recently spent
an afternoon with Mr. Jean-Francois Brakeland, Head of the Unit for
Compliance Promotion, Governance and Legal Issues, in the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment (ECDGE). Based in Belgium, he is in charge of enforcing European Union (EU) environmental law, as well as
providing internal legal advice on EU environmental law to member nations. The
ECDGE develops regulations for EU members, and is responsible for enforcing adoption of, and compliance with, the regulations by member countries.
The purpose of his visit was to gain a better understanding of the
implementation mechanisms of US federal and state environmental
laws concerning nature conservation, waste management, oil pollution and air quality. Mr. Brakeland was interested in the methods
that BERC utilizes to disseminate environmental awareness to small
businesses, and also how the Sustainable Business Program provides positive recognition for businesses who take voluntary action
to reduce pollution. He intends to promote similar compliance assis- Jean-Francois Brakeland
tance mechanisms among EU member nations. In addition to BERC,
he also visited the California Environmental Protection Agency. His trip to the United
States was at the invitation of the United States Department of State and the Northern California World Trade Center was his host in Sacramento.
BERC, located at 3200 Freedom Park Drive, Suite 100, McClellan, 95652, is a onestop, non-regulatory, Permit Assistance Center that helps Sacramento County Businesses understand and comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Their assistance is free and confidential for any business located in, or considering locating to, Sacramento County. You can contact BERC at (916) 874-2100 or visit

Carpet Recycler Opens Facility in Placer County
Every year, nearly 6 billion pounds of carpet are discarded in the United States. Carpets discarded in landfills can take up to 20,000 years to fully degrade. And in 2009,
only 5% of the total waste stream of carpet was diverted from landfills.
Carpet Collectors was established to address this recycling opportunity, and recently opened a new location in Rocklin. In addition to accepting drop off of waste
carpet at their warehouse, they can also drop off a collection trailer at your job site.
Recycled carpet can be used to make new carpet, carpet cushions, plastic-wood
composites, picnic tables, park benches, automobile parts, and erosion control products.
