Freddie Will Be
Missed
“Crackers” Stirs Up
South Amboy
By Tom Burkard
Freddie Brembor, 60 of Old Bridge, and
formerly of Sayreville died on Sept. 1. He
was the highly-respected and loved owner
of Freddie’s S.A. Pub in South Amboy for
15 years prior to his retirement last year. He
previously worked for Jersey Central Power
& Light Co. in Sayreville for 12 years as a
welder. Freddie was the former owner of the
Middlesex County Tap Pool Association.
Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting
Freddie enjoyed his pleasant personality and
fun-loving, yet sincere at times approach to
life. He loved to travel, especially to Aruba
where he and his lifetime partner and companion, June Curran and he vacationed many
times through the years.
I personally got to know Freddie and
June through their 15 years of advertising
Freddie’s S.A. Pub with The SA Times,
and we had many good conversations and
some laughs through the years. I will miss
Freddie, as will countless others whose lives
he’s touched during his time on earth. God
Bless, Freddie!

Matarangolo
Promoted
To Captain
Joseph Matarangolo was recently promoted to the rank of Captain of the South
Amboy Police Dept. He joined the force
on July 14, 1988, exactly 2 years after he
began working in law enforcement with
the Middlesex County Park Police Dept.
This marked the first time a policeman was
sworn in during a City Council meeting,
which was an idea of Chief Darren LaVigne,
who is a childhood friend of Matarangolo’s.
Captain Matarangolo received a plaque from
Council President Fred Henry at the swearing in ceremony. Congratulations, Joe and
best of luck!
Club Abyss Closes
Club Abyss, a popular Route 35 South

The club was opened for 20 years and featured many top national acts such as Pink,
P. Diddy, LL Cool J, just to name a few .
The establishment will now be rented as a
banquet facility.

New Jersey based Exit 135 Productions filmed a new independent short film,
“Crackers” in South Amboy from Sept.
13-17 at Henry’s Raritan Barber Shop, and
Marconi Photography Studio, both located
on Bordentown Ave., South Amboy.
“Crackers,” was written by newbie
writers Timothy Reinhardt and Gregory
Principato. “Although I have been in the
film business for over 16 years, mainly
working in the camera department, I have
yet to write a story of my own that I can be
proud of, that is until now,” Greg explains
when asked about the script. Co-writer Tim
adds, “Working with Greg was an incredibly
creative and enjoyable experience. Honestly,
the writing came easily because we share a
similar comedic style. It also helped that
we pulled a lot of the material from real-life
experiences and people we know.”
“Crackers” is a dark comedy about an
Italian chef named Gus whose life is turned
upside down after a mishap during a Sunday
dinner, when Jack, his father in law, chokes
to death on an ossobuco bone. Gus is happy
living in his small paradise surrounded by his
younger wife, his vibrant garden, his kitchen,
and his opera music. This all changes when
his overbearing, loud, large and obnoxious
mother in law Bidelia invades his home.
Gus slowly loses his paradise and his sanity
as Bidelia methodically destroys everything
that is sacred to him.
The initial idea for this fictional story
began about 10 years ago, after a trip to New
Orleans and a tour of some of the haunted
spots throughout the French Quarter. After
years of mulling it over and changing the
plot a few times, Gregory finally teamed up
with Timothy Reinhardt and completed the
script within a few short months.
The movie stars Vincent D’Onofrio
(Law & Order Criminal Intent), Brenda
Vaccaro (You Don’t Know Jack), Anthony
Laciura (Boardwalk Empire/MET Opera

Hoffman H.S. Class of 1980 returned
for its final year in September ’79, and the
John Street gang was most likely rockin’ to
the #1 hit at the time, “My Sharona,” as they
orbited “The Pleasant Little City.”

A Prayer For Healing
Lord, you invited all who are burdened to come
to You. Allow your healing hand to heal me. Touch
my soul with Your compassion for others. Touch
my heart with Your courage and infinite love for all.
Touch my mind with Your wisdom, that my mouth may
always proclaim Your praise. Teach me to reach out
to You in my need. Help me to lead others to You by
my example. Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring me
health in body and spirit so that I may serve You with
all my strength. Touch gently this life which you have
created. Amen -T.B.
PRAYER TO ST. JUDE
(To be said when problems arise or when one seems
to be deprived of all visible help, on far cases almost
despaired of). Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant
and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you
universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things
almost despaired of, pray for me, I am so helpless and
alone. Make use I implore you of that particular privilege
given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where
help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in

Mr. Principato has carefully selected this
all-star cast with many of the roles written
specifically for the chosen actor. Although
this is his first short narrative, Gregory Principato, had directed before, most recently the
award-winning documentary, “Mr. Laughs,
A Look Behind the Curtain.”
The producers plan to shop the film

film, check out the website: http://crackersthemovie.com.
Note: Henry “The Barber” Rinkewich
was a very proud and happy man that his
business, Henry’s Raritan Barber Shop was
selected as one of the locations for the shoot.
He said that someone stopped at City Hall
looking for a barber shop in South Amboy,
and his place was recommended by a lady
who worked there. Henry said that, “The
people from the movie came in and looked
around, and loved my antique clocks, and we
signed a contract for them to use the building
for one day.” The shooting continued for
another four days at a business/residence
on Bordentown Ave., Marconi Photography

Jo-Tom’s Memories
South Amboy’s John Letteriello saw
last month’s “Do You Remember” photo
of Jo-Tom’s Sub Shop, and it brought back
some wonderful memories for him. He said,
“I lived on Pine Ave. for awhile. Jo-Tom’s
mad e the only Newark Style Italian hot
dogs around, and my wife and I went there
all the time. They moved across the street,
and then a couple of blocks down, and they
only sold subs there.”
Dee Ostrowski of Morgan said, “I
remember Jo-Tom’s like I was there almost
yesterday! I remember the mouth-watering
taste of my 2 favorites: Italian Cold Cut and
Roast Beef. (Every sub since has paled in
comparison!) But, not at the location in last
month’s picture. Jo-Tom’s had moved across
the street to the east side of Pine Ave.”
Miniature Golf
Courses
In South Amboy?
Former South Amboy resident and avid
SA Times reader, Don Zrebiec sent us a
letter that said his father had told him there
were two miniature golf courses in South
Amboy, both closed by the 1940’s or earlier.
He said that one was located on the corner
of Washington Ave. & Feltus St., diagonally
across from Sacred Heart’s parking lot. The
other was near St. Mary’s parking lot ramp
that leads to Augusta St.
Don and his father were wondering
if any SA Times readers would have any
information on these golf courses, such as
the names, dates they were active, or if they
have any photos of them to share with The
SA Times for the readers to view.
Well, this is the first time we’ve ever
heard of miniature golf courses in South
Amboy, but then again, we weren’t around
back then, and hope someone can enlighten
us more about this bit of local history. If
you have any information or photos, e-mail:
[email protected], or send to: SA Times,

Rock And Rant
By Rev. Buckdaddy Flash
The cool air of the fall season is creeping
in and the sun is beginning to settle into its
long hibernation. Football has arrived and
the MLB is sliding into its “on the edge of
your seat” post season drama. Add one
part NHL and one part NBA, and you have
a recipe for the best time of the year to be
a fan of professional sports. So let us ride
Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” from South
Amboy Heights into our living rooms or
stadiums and cheer our overpaid heroes on.
The frosty air, the smell of beer brats, and the
taste of blackberry brandy makes me yearn to
spend my entire Sunday in a parking lot 10
minutes outside of Newark. Be prepared to
be “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC while you are
waiting for your team to receive the kickoff
on opening day of the new colossal eyesore
stuck in the swamps of Jersey. Enjoy!

from quarterback Joe Geiger. In addition,
he hauled in a 2-point conversion. In 13
rushes, Stephenson raced for 142 yards. The
Bombers first TD of the season came on a

Cureton booted 2 extra points.

East football club, 16-0. Delon Stephenson
once again starred for the Blue & Gray by
scoring 2 touchdowns, the first on a 50-yard
scoring strike from quarterback Joe Geiger.
He broke loose for a 10-yard TD run, to
give Sayreville more than enough for the
victory.

Jayhawk Summer League in Kansas, beat
the Seattle Studs, 9-6 to capture the club’s
5th NBC crown.

strong .427 during the tournament, following
an outstanding regular season, during which
he batted .387 with 15 RBI, and was a 2nd
Team All-League selection. The Liberal BJ’s

1949 Bombers: The Best?
The 1949 Sayreville Bombers undefeated football team finished with a perfect,
unbeaten, untied 8-0 record, and easily outscored the opposition by an amazing 226-38
for the season. In their first two contests, the
Sayreville club shutout Lakewood, 32-0, and
Metuchen 25-0. Coach Vince Abbatiello’s

Al “Crazylegs” Draeger, who is believed
by many to be the all-time greatest Bomber
football player in history, led Middlesex
County in scoring by racing from his
backfield spot for 105 points! He hit his
peak by breaking loose for 5 touchdowns
against Matawan, as the Bombers cruised
to a 44-6 romp. Denny Connors was the
talented quarterback who guided this amazing Sayreville squad, and got plenty of help
from Matt Prusik, who was a 1st Team
All-County Defensive Lineman selection
in the Perth Amboy Evening News along
with Draeger. Ed Mosakowski was a 2nd
team pick, and Tom Vazquez and Charlie
Kolakowski were 3rd team choices at guard
and back respectively.
The team was loaded with talent, and had
one of the greatest coaches in NJ High School
at the time, the legendary Coach Vince Abbatiello. This legendary Bomber team must
have been pretty exciting to watch!

South Amboy, Sayreville Popular
For Movies/TV Filming
By Tom Burkard
The local area has been a popular
location in filming movies and TV shows
throughout the years. In January, “Mercy,”
a popular NBC TV show shot scenes at
Waterfront Park, Teddy’s Bar in the Morgan
section of Sayreville, and Monaghan House
on South Pine Ave. in South Amboy. One
of the stars of the show, Taylor Shilling was
very friendly, and posed for photos with
young fans in between takes.
In August 2000, scenes from “Grownups” were shot at Bourbon Street (Near
McDonald’s) on Route 9, South, Sayreville.
Superstar John Stamos was the big name in
the movie along with Daniel London, Meredith Salenger, and Jessica Walter. Michele
Wagner of South Amboy was chosen as an
extra in the film.
In 1999, the movie “Coyote Ugly,” had
filming done in South Amboy, on Broadway,
in the building owned by Mike Madura, and
was a laundromat many years ago. The movie
company installed a sign on the building,
calling the business Sea Side Pizza for the
movie, and also shot a scene at the South
Amboy Knights of Columbus Council #426.
John Goodman and newcomer, Piper Perabo
starred in this interesting story.
Ironically, in 1985, Director Woody Allen and his cast including Mia Farrow and
Danny Aiello, filmed part of the movie “The
Purple Rose of Cairo” at the old and legendary Raritan Diner, which was located in the
same spot where Henry’s Raritan Barber
Shop is now, and scenes from “Crackers”
were shot on September 13th.
Two of the earliest films ever recorded
took place in Sayreville. In 1910, “The Perils
of Pauline” had scenes shot at the former
Raritan River Railroad Station in Parlin.
Silent film actress, Pearl White played the
heroine. In 1914, “Juggernaut,” had scenes
shot at Ducks Nest Pond, (now Bailey Park)
in Sayreville. The most memorable scene
was when a locomotive and three cars (filled
with mannequins) crashed off a trestle into
the water.
*A special thank you to Parlin’s Ed Bolk
for the information on the early Sayreville
films.

Two More Added To
Greatest List
Two Sayreville Bomber football great
who were inadvertently missing from last
month’s article, “Sayreville’s Greatest Football Players In History,” are Al “Crazylegs”
Draeger and Matt Prusik. Draeger was an
All-County 1st Team, and All-State selection
in 1948 and 1949, winning the county scoring
title in ’49. Prusik was a 1949 All-County,
and most likely an All-State pick.
1970-The 1969 Baseball State Champion, St. Mary’s opened its ’70 campaign
with a thrilling 10-9 victory over CBA. The
Eagles scored 6 runs in the 6th inning to
comeback for the “W.” Joe Wallis drilled
a 2-run double to make it 9-8, CBA, and
Tom Boychuk came through with probably
the biggest hit of his high school career to
drive in the tying and winning runs. Bernie
Mackiel chipped in with 2 singles. Talented
junior lefty, John Kibbler, who won the state
final the previous year, chalked up the win
for the Saints.
1985-Joe Brand of Sayreville and John
“Skeets” Skarzynski of South Amboy were
the top two pitchers on the Middlesex County
College baseball team.
1975-Sayreville lefty Hank Zaleski fired
a brilliant no-hitter to defeat St. Peter’s, 70. He struck out 10 and walked 3 for his
first win of the season. Mike McSpadden
ripped a triple and had 3 RBI, while Rick
Shanley belted a 2-run three-bagger, and
Kevin Spiecker added an RBI single for
the Bombers…
The Sayreville softball squad trounced
South River, 12-1, as Sherry Popowski
blasted a grand slam home run, and Luann
Ferenci a solo dinger. Karen DeSiena was
the winning pitcher.

Eagles Shoot For Winning Season
By Tom Burkard
Coach Bob Kearns
Expectations are high for the Cardinal
McCarrick/St. Mary’s Eagles football club
this year, after finishing 3-8 last season. Head
Coach Bob Kearns, now in his third year at
the helm, has worked hard to improve the
team, not only on the field, but in his opinion
more importantly in the game of life. He
said, “When we came here, we had to revamp
everything, from how they looked, and
dressed, and their attitude towards school.
MCC Grad Achieve
100%
Dental Hygiene Grads from Middlesex
County College Achieve 100 Percent Pass
Rate on Boards
Every member of the 2010 graduating class of the Dental Hygiene program
at Middlesex County College has passed
the regional and national boards. They are
all now eligible to begin working as dental
hygienists.
The certification consists of a clinical
exam, in which the dental hygienist works
on a patient, and a seven-hour written exam.
The clinical examination is administered by
the North East Regional Board of Dental
Examiners, a consortium of 16 state boards,
and the written exam is administered by the
American Dental Association.
“This is wonderful news,” said HopeClaire Holbeck, the chairperson of the department. “This is the fourth year in a row that
our graduates have achieved the 100 percent
mark and we couldn’t be more proud of them.
This is a very difficult program, but by the
time they have graduated and are ready for
the boards, they are extremely prepared. Our
faculty do a great job in making sure our
students are successful and these results are
a credit to the students and the program.”
The pieces started falling together, and we
ended last season with 18 boys, and we had 3
wins, and could have won 3 others.” Kearns
and his fine Assistant Coaches, Lou Quilia
and Rich Starega, a former Eagles’ player,
have worked hard to build student interest
in football, and it has paid off. “We’ve gone
from 18 to 37 possibly 40 players this year,”
Kearns proudly stated. “We’ve been successful, and a year ago sent one of our players,
Dominic Appiah to Boston College on a full
scholarship. His brother John Appiah is following in his footsteps, and has offers from
Monmouth and all the other schools in the
Big East, and also Georgetown and Miami.
We also have two other former players now
playing on the college level.”
Kearns sees the big picture for his players and says, “I don’t care about winning or
losing, I care about what my players do and
how they do it. The game is 48 minutes,
but I’m concerned about the rest of their
lives. I’m fairly close to my players. I take
pride that we’re going to do things the right
way, we’re going to go to school and get
an education, get to the next level. We’re
going to compete on the field. We practice
as hard as anybody, and compete. “ Coach
Kearns is sincerely concerned about prepping the players for their futures and the
game of life. He said, “My biggest win of
the year was when Dominic Appiah called
me last week and said, ‘Coach, thank you.’
I asked him why, and he said, ‘I ran out into
the stadium with 50,000 people cheering. I
never experienced that in my life.’ We’re
making a difference.”
The family-oriented coach said, “I love
this school. I feel at home here. We go to
church together as a team on Sunday, and

Congratulations to the Warriors from Sayreville for placing second out of 66 teams in the
Trentonian Softball Tournament held on August 14-15th at Mercer County Park. Teams from
the tri-state area participated in this Annual prestigious event. Highlights included Shawn
Johnson batting over .700, Brian Salazar and Mark Poore batting over .600, and Chris
Green pitching a shutout. Everyone on the team batted over .500. Special thanks to Kathy
Green who listened to Chris all night on how he pitched a shutout. Team members were:
Jim Kelly, Shawn Johnson, Matt Revel, Matt Fullum, Eddie Balls, Tom Kutcher, Mark Poore,
Brian Salazar, Mike Peleskey, Robbie Holmes, John Nuber, Bobby Jones, Chris Green.
we’re in shirt and tie at school. In addition,
we have our team meals on Friday night
before every game. I’m trying to get them
family-based. I’m trying to put them in a
good light so people can see them. If you
walk into our school, you can pick out the
football players because they’re in shirt and
ties, and everybody else isn’t. They dress like
this all day from the beginning of the season
to December. The first time we wore shirts
and ties this year, the teachers complimented
the players, and you could see their chests
pumping out. They walked real nice and
upright straight, and we went on to have our
best practice that day. If you’re in a shirt and
tie you represent something. Now you’ve
got to act like a man, and that’s the whole
key here, be responsible, accountable, and
be respectful. It’s really taking off.”
The Eagles are counting heavily of
course on John Appiah, who “plays everywhere” according to the coach, Willie
Thomas a wide receiver, who is being recruited by big schools, quarterback David
Whitfield, a transfer from Franklin with a
strong arm and “great sense of the game,”
Calvin Peeples, who Coach Kearns calls
“The best tackler on the team. When he hits
you, he really hits you.” Jose Ruiz, one of
the top rushers in the conference last year
is “quiet and does his job.”
The inspiring coach, who has been in
the Educational Field as a counselor/coach
for 30 years, expects his Eagles to “Make a
push for a winning season, 6 wins. We won
2 my first year, 3 last year, and it wouldn’t
be too bad if we won one more than the
previous year.”
“Everybody helps at this school. The
bottom line is it’s for the kids. We’re here
for them and anything they need,” said Coach
Kearns. He also praised Principal Jean Kline
for “A marvelous job, backing us. She has
helped immensely in our success.”
Coach Bob Kearns’ favorite philosophy
is “Give it everything you have. Every day,
get up and be accountable, responsible,
and respectful.” He certainly has done an
outstanding job in instilling this into the
young athletes at Cardinal McCarrick/St.
Mary’s High School, and his genuine caring and concern for his players, not only
on the football field, but in the game of life
are highly commendable. Great job, Coach
Kearns!

The Pleasant Little City by the bay
May God bless it so forever it may stay
That grows today just as it’s yesterday
This Pleasant Little City by the bay
200 hundred years ago Amboy began
Settled upon the banks of the Raritan
The people knew since its original plan
This was a very special piece of land
And the years brought history and fame
From a Governor, coal, and the first rail
train
To weapons, ammunition, and explosions
of the same
A fact in Mr. Ripley’s book, and the Major
League game
But it’s the people of the town
That yields its royal cordial crown
Caring, hard-working, lovers and clowns
Where neighbors, friends, and family
abound
This Pleasant Little City by the bay
If born, raised, or worked here, you’ll know
the way
“It’s home,” may we all be so proud to say
Of this Pleasant Little City by the bay.

Amboy, New Jersey. And that means that
this year, 2010, is the 50th Anniversary of
the one experience that connects me to every
natural born citizen of this country probably
more than any other. No matter where in the
USA, at whatever age, race, socio-economic
stratum, job status, sex, ethnicity, we all can
relate to the “high school experience” as
something that makes us uniquely American
and that we all have in common.
Just look at the movies of the last eighty
years. What is the one constant setting in the
Andy Hardee “Golly Gee” movies of the
thirties, the “I was a Teen Age Werewolf” of
the fifties, the “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini”
movies of the sixties, the “American Graffiti” and “Grease” musicals of the seventies,
the wonderful “Fast Times at Ridgemont
High”, immaturity of the “Porky’s fiascos,
the genius of Matthew Broderick and
Reese Witherspoon in 1999’s “Election” ,”
“American Pie” embarrassments of today,
and , of course, you can throw in your favorite high school title anywhere you want.
It never stops, high school is the milieu we
can all relate to.
But if you look at the “high school
experience” in New Jersey right now you
may see something that you never thought
of even in your wildest fantasies…. The
end of the high school as you knew it. High
school is being privatized as you read this.
For profit. For investors to make a buck, and
just like those cute, spanking new nursery
and primary schools popping up all over
the place, you may very soon see a nice for
profit high school right next to the Quick
Chek or in a new strip mall.. And you wont
have to worry about going to the big game,
cause there ain’t gonna be one.
Of course, I am speaking as a career
high school teacher and my point of view is
skewered in favor of the public schools. So
you can take what I say with a big grain of
salt. However, that does not change the facts
relating to the current demonizing of public
education and the diversion of those public
funds to private “educational” corporations.
I’m not saying it’s good or bad. That’s for
you, yourself to decide, or more like it in this
day and age, for you to let some televison
or radio geek to decide for you.
When I go to my high school reunion,
I’m going knowing it’s the end of an era.

Exercise And Your Arthritis
The word arthritis literally means joint
inflammation. It refers to more than 100
different diseases. These diseases usually
affect the joints and the tissues around the
joints such as muscles and tendons. Some
of these diseases can also affect other parts
of the body, including the skin and internal
organs. Nearly 40 million Americans have
arthritis. These people face many challenges because of the disease. Some kind of
exercise is good for almost everyone! For
many years, it was thought that people with
arthritis should not exercise because it would
damage their joints. Now doctors know
that people with arthritis can improve their
health and fitness through exercise without
hurting their joints.
If you have arthritis, exercise is especially important. Here are some of the ways
exercise can help: *Keeps your joints moving and keeps the muscles around the joints
strong. *Keeps the bone and cartilage tissue
strong by increasing circulation. *Gives
you more energy. *Improves your balance.
*Prevents further joint damage.
If you don’t exercise, your joints can
become even more stiff and painful. The
role of chiropractic is one of providing our
patients with a form of service that will take
the stress from a joint, making the patient’s
life more comfortable. This is accomplished
throughout a broad range of treatments,
including manipulative techniques, heat
treatments, exercise and diathermy. Educating patients in proper posture while walking,
sitting, standing and diet control when undue
weight puts too much pressure on overtaxed
joints. Even though arthritis is a degenerative disease, we can play an important role
in maintaining and increasing mobility. As
always, an ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure!

Hi Tom,
Thanks for printing my Woodstock
article right on the centerfold on page 17
last month, for all to see! The trip turned
out a lot different than Gene, Maurice, Tom
and I expected. It was great to find all the
YouTube videos that seem so realistic, and
everyone at Woodstock looked so young in
1969. Keep up the great work!

Tom,
I was meaning to write to thank you
for literally “Getting the band back together.” Because of your interest, we all
got to remember things from long ago, and
enjoy them as if they were new again. I
suppose you’ve heard that we found Mike
Henry, and we are preparing to do a special
performance, with the original Profit$, at
an upcoming reunion of the St. Mary’s HS

instigating this event. Anyway, Tom, you
made a bunch of us very happy for which I
sincerely thank you.

Dear Tom,
I get The SA Times each month as it’s
sent down from my mother-in-law, Kate
Jankowski, and I can’t tell you what a kick
I got of seeing that 1960’s group picture at
the Little League Picnic. Towards that end,
please find my official entry for the Real Big
Picture Contest. (This letter was a bit late
for publication, and the person who wrote it,
easily won 1st place in the contest).
Funny thing is, I’ve had a helluva time
trying to find myself. I know I was there. I
see my brother George, and I’d have to guess
that I’m an 11 year old, as there are 12’s
in the picture (Luke Sciallo, Mark Bratus,
Gene “Chud” Chodkiewicz, but who’s to say
they’re not there just for the party! Anyway
that’s my best guess; that it’s the Summer of
’62. The other dilemma I have is where’s Kell
(Tom Kelly)? Where’s Joe Noble (Our star
pitcher who led us to the LL championship
that year vs. Enterprise—I’ll never forget
hitting the right center field fence in that best
of 3. One other memory was Opening Day
that year, and post parade, all of the players
down at the field, lining the fences. One of
the Tedesco brothers of the Lions team took
a wicked and errant foul ball line drive that
clipped him right in the side of the forehead
and “skied” probably 20 feet in the air after
contact. Luckily, he was OK.
In closing, what a great visit of Nostalgia here; and who’s to say that nostalgia
is but an abdication of memory. I ask your
consideration in a “bonus point” in that I
KNOW that the photographer was Mr. Jim
Tedesco.
All good things in all good times
Tom.

Fishing Flashes
By Teo “Weebles” Weber
Salt water
The fluke season ended as it began with
many shorts caught and very few keepers. I
tried it with my wife on the last day on a motorboat out of Atlantic highlands. Together
we caught 20 some odd fish and four of our
fluke almost made the keeper mark. In our
mix were Sea Robins, a small Blue and a
Kingfish which hit a jig head bated with gulp.
We fished close to the harbor as the weather
was breezy and we had some bumpy swells.
There were some keeper fluke caught in the
ocean but they are moving out of Barnegat
Bay due to the recent storm. Party Boat
Bluefishing is very good with big Blues and
lots of False Albacore and Skipjacks showing up in the chum. Mixed among these, are
some Bonito. Ocean surf fishing, especially
south is quite good for mixed sized Bluefish.
There are a good number of Kingfish in the
surf at LBI. In the bay surf fishing is very
slow. I only saw one or two Blues caught
when I checked the Cliffwood beach area.
Sea Bass, Porgies and Blackfish are what the
Party Boats are catching right now.
Fresh Water
Low water and heat have slowed up
most fresh water fishing. Smallmouth bass
are hitting in the Delaware. Most of them
are small but there are a few good sized ones
around. Hybrid Bass are still being caught
in Spruce Run at night.

SAY WHAT??!!
By Elaine Scott
People are always saying something,
with their words usually going in “one ear
and out the other.” Yet, there are certain
phrases, one-liners, and quotes we’ve heard
somewhere through the years which “click”
in our minds, and stay there. So, as Joan Rivers used to say, “Let’s talk,” and remember
some of them.
“Go ahead, make my day.” Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry
“The devil made me do it.” Flip Wilson
“A woman can neither be too thin, nor
too rich.” Gloria Vanderbilt
“I’d rather be in Philadelphia.” Etched

“I float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
Muhammed Ali

Clark Gable’s line in Gone with the Wind
“Take my wife…pleeease.” Henny

“My men wear English Leather, or
they wear nothing at all.” Early ‘70’s commercial

“I didn’t inhale.” Clinton
