Hirons Announces Internship Program Honoring Amos Brown
Ball State University senior Taylor Morton selected as first program intern
INDIANAPOLIS – Hirons & Company Communications,
Radio One, and the Indianapolis Recorder announced
today an internship program honoring the legacy of
Amos Brown. The program encourages minority students
to seek careers in communications and will support
minority recruitment efforts, both for the companies and
throughout Central Indiana. Taylor Morton, Ball State
University ’17, was recently selected as the first intern to
participate in the program.
Morton, who started her internship at Hirons earlier this
month, will work in the company’s Communications
Management department. In addition to intern work typically performed at Hirons, Morton will also complete a
capstone project in conjunction with Radio One and the Recorder.
Hirons will also facilitate opportunities for Morton and future interns to engage with community leaders, with an
emphasis on individuals or organizations in which Amos Brown had a significant relationship or impact.
“Amos Brown was a legendary figure within media and the entire Indianapolis community,” said Hirons President
and CEO Tom Hirons. “This program is our opportunity to honor his importance, not only to journalism, but to the
entire communications industry.”
The selection committee who chose
Morton included Oveda Brown, sister of
Amos Brown, Radio One Regional Vice
President & Market Manager Deon
Levingston, Indianapolis Recorder
President Shannon Williams and Hirons
Vice President Rose Durbin.
Amos Brown (1950-2015) hosted
“Afternoons with Amos” on WTLC and
wrote the “Just Tellin’ It” column in the
Indianapolis Recorder. In 2007, Brown
was inducted into the Indiana

League, Indianapolis United Way, Community Action Against Poverty and Indiana Black Expo. Brown worked with
Hirons in 2010 as co-chair of the Indianapolis Census Complete Count Committee to promote census
participation among residents.

“This is a wonderful recognition for my brother and yet another way his
presence will continue to be felt in Indianapolis, said Oveda Brown.
“Amos impacted the lives of so many people, especially students
interested in pursuing journalism and communications, and I’m so happy
that impact will continue.”
Taylor Morton is a senior studying telecommunications at Ball State
University. She is an anchor for NewsLink Indiana, Ball State’s Emmywinning nightly newscast, a member of the National Association of Black
Journalists and was a first place winner in the Miss Circle City Classic.
“We reviewed several qualified applicants, and Taylor really stood out as
an exceptional candidate,” said Williams. “She has a very bright future,
and we look forward to hosting her at the Recorder this summer.”
Moving forward, Hirons plans to offer the internship every spring, summer and fall. To be considered eligible,
applicants must be a current sophomore, junior, senior, master’s student or recent graduate in good academic
standing, with priority given to minority students. Interns in the program will have a Hirons supervisor and mentor
and will work towards the completion of their own capstone project. Once finished with the program, interns will
act as ambassadors for the program and serve as mentors to future Amos Brown interns.
