Weardale: Clearing the Forest by Peter Bowes is acknowledged as the most
authoritative history of Weardale from the period 700 AD to 1900 AD providing a comprehensive background of how the settlements we know today were
founded.
The book of 200 pages, first published in 1990 has long been out of print and
only available through second hand bookshops and on the internet where it
costs anything from £40 to £100.
Visitors to our Museum are always enquiring where they can obtain a copy
of the book and in response to this demand Peter, who is our Vice Chairman,
has allowed his book to be digitally remastered as a pdf, available on CD, with
some new text and completely new coloured images.
The CD is available at limited outlets and can be obtained through the Weardale Museum. We would ask that you respect the work which has gone into
writing the original publcation and the remastered pdf by advising others
where it can be obtained rather than sending them a copy. At £10 it is easily
affordable and helps to sustain the Museum with a small income stream.
