Love Momma Lula and Norberta BOOK & HYMN OF THE MONTH Flawed Families of The Bible How God's Grace Works through Imperfect Relationships Author: David E. Garland & Diana R. Garland Paperback: 236 pages Publisher: Brazos Press (March 1, 2007) Copies of this book are available in the Resource Center while supplies last. M ost Christians believe that the Bible holds the answers to their questions about daily living, and that reading the Scriptures will show them good examples to follow for their own lives. Think for a moment and try to list a few examples of healthy families in the Bible who are ideals worth emulating. Having trouble? The families of the Bible were far from perfect, and not so different in that regard from our imperfect families today. In Flawed Families of the Bible, a New Testament scholar (David) and a professor of social work (Diana) take a real and close look at the actual families of the Bible. This honest book will inspire and encourage readers with its focus on the overarching theme of hope and grace for families, showing that it is in the "imperfect places" that we can catch a glimpse of grace. “And you thought that your family was messed up! For all you abusers and abused, addicted, raped, codependents, and control freaks, Good News. God loves to work with families like yours and mine. Here are 'family values' God's way--a messy assortment of marriages and families that only God could love. And God does.” – William H. Willimon, coauthor of Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony Commentary source: amazon.com The book reviews are the personal opinions of individual writers and do not necessarily reflect the views of MSMBC’s pastoral leadership. History of the Hymns “Jesus Loves Me” by Susan Warner, Anna Bartlett Warner, & William Bradbury T he very first Christian song most children learn is “Jesus Loves Me.” If there were a best-seller hit list among the preschoolers, this very simple but precious song would have to be at the top of the charts. Yet few people know that “Jesus Loves Me” began life not as a song but as a part of one of 1860’s best-selling novels. cadets. When they were on military duty, the cadets would sing “Jesus Loves Me.” The popularity of the song was so great that upon Anna’s death, she was buried in the West Point Cemetery In 1862, William Batchelder Bradbury found the poem “Jesus Loves Me”, wrote music, and added the chorus: “Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus Loves me ..." William was born in 1816 in York, Maine where his father was the leader of a church choir. He moved with his parents to Boston and met Lowell Mason, and by 1834 was known as an organist. In 1840, he began teaching in Brooklyn, New York. In 1847, he went to Germany, where he studied harmony, composition, and vocal and instrumental music with the best masters. “Jesus Loves Me” was written by Susan Warner; the lyrics first appeared as a poem in an 1860 novel called Say and Seal. The words were spoken as a comforting poem to a dying child. Henry Warner, the father of Susan and her sister Anna Bartlett, was a wealthy New York City lawyer. However, he lost all of his fortune in the 1837 depression and the family was forced to move to their summer home on Constitution Island in the Hudson River. It was there that Susan and Anna began writing to earn money. Both sisters became devout Christians in the late 1830’s. After publication as a song, “Jesus Loves Me” became one of the most popular hymns in churches around the world, especially among children. Anna Bartlett Warner later set Susan’s poem to music and the sisters held Bible studies for the West Point Prepared by: Jonathan Jenkins References: Wikipedia, Inspirational Archive 3 MINISTRY TEAM NEWS th Mt. SUMMER@SINAI Grief Workshop Highlights By Eva A. Merritt-Outlaw On each Saturday in the month of June, a grief workshop was held in the church fellowship hall facilitated by Dr. Gloria Morrow, one of the nation's leading clinical psychologists. Grief is defined as a journey of working through a loss. Some of the signs that show a person is in the grieving process are anger at God, guilt, isolation, crying, and irritability. Grief that lasts indefinitely is unhealthy and requires professional help. African Americans are least likely to seek professional help because we think that would indicate that “you are crazy”. As Christians we think, “our faith is not strong enough”, our loved one “is in a better place” or “you should just be able to get over it”. An effective tool for processing grief is reading God’s word, praying and believing in God’s promise to always be with us in our time of distress. We discussed healthy ways to honor our loved one’s memory such as establishing a scholarship in their name, starting a monthly family newsletter with memories or quotes from the loved one, or providing assistance to people who are going through a difficult time in their grieving process. This workshop taught us to be more mindful of the people around us who are showing signs of grief and become a support for them. Grief is not always the result of a physical death. It could be the death of a relationship or the loss of a job. We were all blessed by participating in this workshop. C l a s s o f 2 0 1 6 Calling all Mt. Sinai Graduates & Achievers! To help its children M t.grow in the way they should, Mt. Sinai has a children’s ministry – Kingdom Kids. The mission of Kingdom Kids is to promote the development of biblically literate and spiritually committed children through: a. Biblical instruction (2Timothy 3:16-17) b. Partnership with parents (Deuteronomy 6:6-9) c. Activities that reinforce Biblical principles (1 Corinthians 9:19-22) The ministry’s responsibility is to nurture the faith of the children God entrusted to them. Their duties are centered on prayer, preparation, and teaching God’s word through singing, games, and arts and crafts while providing a safe, loving and nurturing environment that reinforces biblical principles at all times. Established between 2011 and 2012, Kingdom Kids has 17 active members. All of the members are leaders who facilitate in different areas: Pre-School teachers - Tracy Goss & Rhonda Mayo; Primary I teachers - Venus Bernardo, Nate Jackson, Dawn Strozier, and RaeSaundra Lightner; Primary II teachers - Tasha Turner, Kisha LaRue, and Julie Hatter. Bonita Anderson fills in as needed plus serves delicious snacks at all events. Monique Brown and Bonita Anderson serve as overseers of the Junior Doorkeepers. Kim Thomas provides administrative support, Jacqueline Smart is the record keeper, Erika Williams heads up the VBS activities, and Vickie Wright and her team are in charge of all the amazing Arts & Crafts activities that always reflect a biblical theme. To serve in the Kingdom Kids ministry, potential volunteers must be active/official members of Mt. Sinai Church and must complete a background check provided by the church office. Once cleared, the new team members can attend the ministry’s quarterly meetings. The Kingdom Kids serve several times a year. Their activities include Holy Week festivities, Christmas singing, Vacation Bible School, Back to School Rally, Fall Festival, and Sunday FUNday activities where the children enjoy various activities such as game trucks, fun treats, bouncers, face painting, arts & crafts, and much more! Bonita Anderson summed up her experience with Kingdom Kids in this way: “It brings me so much joy being a part of the children’s ministry. To see them grow not only physically but spiritually has been a true blessing.” You too can experience this blessing because they need more volunteers. Kim Thomas said, “You will be blessed watching these children learn about Jesus’ love and you know how fast they grow; it is amazing to see how they express their love for Jesus in so many ways.” Written by Sandra Banks 6 MINISTRY TEAM OF THE MONTH PRAISE DANCE MINISTRY By Judy Glasco T he Praise Dance Ministry is a part of the Youth Division of Mt. Sinai. It is headed by team leaders are Rochelle Molson, Racquel Carter, and EJ Lindsay. Through movement and music, the Praise in Motion dancers and Silent Worship mime team learn to express worship to God in creative ways. Participants need to be official members of Mt. Sinai, part of the Sunday School, and regular attendees for worship services with their parents/guardians who are members. The biblical directive of the ministry comes from Ecclesiastes 3 on "A Time for Everything". Verse four says, “A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. To be a part of the ministry the youth should conduct themselves as Christians by setting a good example for others to follow, watching how they act in church, and most of all, to always be on their best behavior because God & others will be watching them. Praise In Motion dancers are arranged as follows: Group #1 & #2 for ages 5-12 and Group #3 for ages 13-23. Our Silent Worship mime group is for ages 5-23. They meet weekly on Friday evenings. The Praise Dance Ministry would love to invite you to the... th 6 Annual "A Time to Dance" Praise Dance Concert Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 5:00pm Location: Mt. Sinai Church. All are welcome! Between graduations, weddings, family reunions and professional conferences, everyone is going somewhere at least once during this season. Here are 10 tips to help keep you safe when leaving your city by plane, train or automobile to celebrate, reunite and learn with others. 1. Pack your luggage lightly. This is important for two reasons. (1) Airlines charge excess weight fees, sometimes upwards of $100, for baggage over 50 pounds, (http://www.farecompare.com/about/worldwide-baggage-fee-chart). Trains impose excess weight fees for baggage over 50 pounds, (https://www.amtrak.com/baggage-policy). You don't want to waste money that may be needed for an unexpected (or budgeted) expense later on in your trip. (2) Heavy baggage may hurt an airplane's ability to fly safely. 2. Arrive at an airport at least 2 hours prior to your flight's departure time. Early arrival helps ensure a smooth check-in process. It also helps you prepare for unexpected departure time and gate changes. While running is good for your health, it's not safe to arrive at an airport 10 minutes before your flight is due to depart, only to discover a flight change that forces you to run to the other side of the airport. Flights usually cannot leave until everyone is accounted for; therefore, you should consider the safety of everyone on board and make sure you're where you're supposed to be before you're supposed to be there. 3. Follow the flight crew's directions regarding seat belts, smoking restrictions, electronic devices and appropriate times to leave your seat. Disregarding directions provided by the flight crew may frighten other passengers, delay the flight and result in your arrest. If you are arrested, how can you celebrate your favorite aunt's birthday with the rest of your family? 4. When traveling by train, be sure to take a walk every hour. When the train is at a station for a long time, leave the train and take a walk in the vicinity of the train. Walking reduces life-threatening fluid buildup and blood clots in the legs. 5. Do not smoke on the train, (https://www.amtrak.com/smoking-policy). Doing so will get you removed from the train at its next station stop. 8 SUMMER FEATURE Travel Safety Tips Continued 6. If you are driving, make sure you keep your passengers safe. Keep your eyes on the road at all times. Do not text. Do not take or make phone calls. Do not consume alcohol. Consume water. When you are tired, ask someone else to drive. 7. Make sure your car's tires have enough air. Check the tread on your tires (and for nails in your tires) to make sure you won't have any blowouts or flats. Make sure you have a spare tire in your trunk to get to a store to purchase a replacement. Have a first-aid kit and small toolkit, including a flashlight and a fullycharged cell phone, with you. (https://blog.allstate.com/super-vehicle-emergency-car-kit) 8. Keep your AAA card with you, even when you are not driving. In addition to roadside assistance, AAA membership offers discounts at various places associated with travel, i.e., hotels, restaurants, clothing stores, (http://memberdiscounts.calif.aaa.com). If you don't have AAA, make sure you are fully acquainted with the terms and conditions of your car maker's roadside assistance program. 9. When traveling alone, limit the information you share about your travel plans, including destination city, your hotel's name and departure from your city with people you do not know. Avoid walking alone at night. If you have to travel alone, be aware of your surroundings, including avoiding poorly-lit areas. 10. If you are traveling with children or those with diabetes, make sure you have healthy snacks and medications handy, (http://www.cdc.gov/features/diabetesandtravel/index.html). Low blood sugar in diabetics may result in hospitalizations. Be sure to keep you and your family's medical insurance cards handy, especially if your travel destination is part of your insurer's service area. Safe travels to everyone embarking on an adventure this season! 9 A SPECIAL REPORT ON MARIJUANA “It’s Lit!” The Truth about Teens and Marijuana Use By Jevaillier Jefferson S ummer is in full swing, and lots of teens take advantage of the free time the season offers. If they are not in summer school or working for a portion of their days, they may spend hours with friends. Since popular culture is all about what’s “lit” these days, teens may be discussing the prospect of using marijuana with their friends. Or, they may use marijuana already. If you are the parent of teens, a teen considering using marijuana or a teen trying to stop one of your peers from using marijuana, take a look at the commonly-held beliefs about marijuana usage that are mentioned below. When your children or peers challenge you with these beliefs, do not be afraid to share the facts provided. 1. Belief: “Marijuana is medicine.” Fact: Marijuana does not possess any ways to heal a person, especially if that person has no clear medical problems. 2. Belief: “Everyone smokes it!” Fact: According to Monitoring the Future, a 2015 study funded by The National Institute on Drug Abuse, (NIDA), and presented by researchers at the University of Michigan, everyone doesn’t smoke. An estimated 1.10 percent of 8th graders, 3 percent of 10th graders and 6 percent of 12th graders smoked daily. To learn more about Monitoring the Future’s findings, including stats on teens’ past month, past year and lifetime marijuana use, visit the, “How Many Teens Use Marijuana?” section of https://teens.drugabuse.gov/drug-facts/marijuana. 3. Belief: “Marijuana is a good way to relax.” Fact: Marijuana makes people paranoid and lazy. It also makes them lose interest in things they once found exciting, like skateboarding, shopping or going to the movies with friends. 4. Belief: “Smoking marijuana is healthier than smoking cigarettes.” Fact: Studies suggest that many of the same health issues that cigarettes produce, including the development of breathing problems and non-stop coughing, are present in marijuana users. However, there are conflicting studies about marijuana use leading to cancer. 5. Belief: “It’s safe to drive while high.” Fact: Driving while -- or after -- using drugs is unsafe. Marijuana instantly hurts a person’s ability to make good decisions. It affects a person’s memory, focus, and coordination. A person may hurt himself and others while driving high. A person may forget that there are speed limits on the road, and that a red light means, “Stop.” He may not be able to brake in enough time to avoid hitting a pedestrian crossing the street and a nearby car. On impact, he may end up being thrown from his vehicle. An argument with a passenger over a small thing may shift a driver’s focus from the road to his passenger, and he may not notice that the car in front of his has stopped suddenly. 10 A SPECIAL REPORT ON MARIJUANA Teens and Marijuana Use Continued 6. Belief: “Marijuana is basically harmless.” Fact: Marijuana usage can have a negative impact on a person’s life. Using, selling and possessing marijuana or other drugs can get you arrested and jailed, robbing you of the life you want for yourself. Since the chemicals contained in marijuana literally fry your brain cells, marijuana use can also lower your IQ. 7. Belief: “You can’t get addicted to marijuana.” Fact: Since teens’ brains are still developing, they are at a higher risk of physical and mental dependencies on drugs. People who are dependent on drugs may struggle to stop using. If they are able to stop for a period of time, they may experience withdrawal symptoms, including sleeplessness, extreme irritability, fear, and a non-stop craving for the drug. This craving is commonly known as, “fiending.” As teens, there is a big amount of pressure to be cool and to be liked. If teens are looking for good ways to be “lit,” studying with friends, attending dances, and going to the beach are examples of the best “lituations” ever. Marijuana is not necessary. This month, we will look at choosing the right bible. Reading and studying God's word is important in enhancing our spiritual growth. Choosing the right Bible can be very challenging. For one, there are so many different types on the market that include various versions, translations, and hundreds of various study Bibles. Here are some tips you should consider in choosing a Bible that’s right for you: 1. Take time to compare Bible translations. A good source is Sam O'Neal on the internet. 2. It’s also very helpful to have a Bible in the same translation that your pastor/church uses to teach and preach. You'll find it easier to follow along during services. At Mt. Sinai, we use the English Standard Version. 3. The Bible.com is also a good source. With this application you can choose which translation you like best while reading and comparing various scriptures. It's a really good application on cell phones, iPads, and other tablets. Lastly, it’s important to consider how, where, and for what purpose you will use your Bible – for church and your personal bible study time. We hope you will consider these tips for this month. Seats will be reserved in the rear for those who arrive during the sermon; late comers are asked to take one of those seats. Those attempting to find a seat at the front of the church after the sermon has already begun will be a distraction to other worshippers. Weekly 1-Hour Prayer Meetings Mon.-Fri.: 6:00 – 7:00am Monday: 12:00 – 1:00pm Saturday: 7:30 – 8:30am 12 MEMBER PROFILE & PURSUITS Regina Mitchell R egina Mitchell, known to some as “Re Re” or Gina, was born and raised in Los Angeles and is the oldest of three. She has two brothers. When growing up, the family visited a different restaurant weekly, something Regina still enjoys. She has worked for Wells Fargo for over 35 years. Regina loves sending greeting cards as a way to encourage others. In her free time, she enjoys going to the movies, reading, and playing games on her iPad. Her lifelong dream is to travel more within the United States, “To see more of God’s world.” Few people know that Regina enjoys watching and attending football games and that she is her mother’s favorite daughter. Hey, isn’t she the only daughter? Oh well, no need to quibble with small details. A member of MSMBC for 14 years, Regina was initially drawn to the church when she heard Pastor H.B. Charles Jr. speak at her former church during prayer bowls and liked what she heard. After visiting the 1800 S. Gramercy location, she found the Mt. Sinai members to be very friendly people, in particular— church secretary, Scharmaine White. Regina is part of the Media and Hospitality Ministries. Regina accepted the Lord at the age of 16 and recalls that at that time, her cousin Sue Childs spoke to her about Christ. Regina has an awe-inspiring testimony as a two-time breast cancer survivor. “God used the experiences to test my faith. I learned how to lean and depend on nobody but God,” she reflects. Regina prompts women to be sure to have an annual mammogram and conduct monthly selfexams. Furthermore, she notes, “Cancer is not a death sentence.” Regina’s favorite scripture is Hebrew 11 – the Hall of Faith. When asked about her greatest passion, she explained that she loves to help single mothers. Her legacy will be her unwavering willingness to help and encourage. Written by Tonya E.
