Spring and Summer 2016
QVSS Has Got Talent 2016 by Ian V McLellan
This talent show was AWESOMER than awesome! It started with yours truly the
MC introducing the Judges: 95.5's own Ingrid Moore, MPP Todd Smith and media
master Mr. Ian Acton who FYI has the EXACT SAME given name as this reporter.
After the judges' intros and a couple or so jokes and whatnot, Mr. Calvin Nolan
kicked off the singing round with Roger Miller's "King of the Road". Other crooners
included Michael Menna, Phillip French (Police's "Don't Stand So Close"), Norman
Sizer (Don Williams' "You're My Best Friend"), Jeremy Lee (Simple Minds' "Don't
You"), Timothy Miracle (Vince Gill's "Sparkle"), Rose Marshall (Alice Cooper
Tune), Kristen Loveless (Dixie Chicks' "Travelling Soldier") and Emma Allen (One
Direction's "Story of My Life"). @ The end of singing round it was 10:30 and we
had our 15 min intermission. Afterward the show returned and this MC introduced
4 special audience members: student placements, Magyn Miracle, Kayla McLean,
Brittney Deziel and Crystal McDonald. Next thing you know: variety X. Margaret
O'Sullivan sang "Over the Rainbow" while playing her guitar, Jeffrey O'Hara did
sign language version of "You Raise Me Up, Jeffrey Dawson "air fiddled" with
Stomping' Tom Connors using his drumsticks and then furnished by our
"meteorologist" Mr. John Bruce. Yours truly filled in some time introducing our "DJ"
Teresa Allen. Then came the Elvis category. Andrew Stevens, Aaron Toms and
the 1 and only Mr. Allan Dawson! Afterward the judges, who by the way critiqued
AWESOMELY WELL, ESPECIALLY Ingrid, headed to granola room to decide the
winners. Meanwhile the best bowlers during fall programs were given prizes for
their symbolic sportsmanship. The judges returned and 1stplace victors were Allan
Dawson (Elvis), Jeffrey O'Hara (variety) and for the singing our own MISS EMMA
ALLEN!!!!!!!!!!! Then this MC was rewarded a free lunch certificate for the diner and
$5 Tim Horton gift card from Mrs. Elaine Allen due to his symbolic Master of Ceremony. In addition, she awarded the judges with free bags of Primal Crunch granola
and lastly latecomer Kate Lapp arrived to perform Katy Perry's "Fireworks". At this
rate nobody can hesitate counting down the number of sleeps to Next year talent

Margret O’Sullivan, Tracy Miracle, Denise
Storm and Linda B went to the Ed Mirvish
Theatre in Toronto. It was very good, and it
was a long day!
So we wanted to find out more about Riverdance, and here's what we found out .
Riverdance is a theatrical show consisting
mainly of traditional Irish music and dance.
Featuring Irish dancing by Jean Butler and
Michael Flatley, and with a score composed
by Limerick native Bill Whelan, it originated
as an interval performance act during 1994
the Eurovision song contest. Shortly afterwards, husband and wife production team
John McColgan and Moya Doherty expanded it into a stage show , which open in Dublin on February 9 1995. Since then, the
show had visited over 450 venue worldwide
and been seen by over 25 million people,
making it one of the most successful dance
productions in the world, If it ever comes
back to Toronto we all think everyone
should try to see it!

Full Strawberry Moon – June This name was universal to
every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it
the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season
for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the
month of June . . . so the full Moon that occurs during
that month was christened for the strawberry!

Belleville’s New Fire Hall
By Calvin Nolan
Belleville has moved its No 1 fire station from Dundas Street East
to their new state of the art facility on 60 Bettes Street. It is called
Belleville Fire and Emergency services Headquarters. The new
building houses 2 ladders trucks 2 pumpers and 2 emergency
response vehicles.
They also have a fire training tower they used to practice in.
There are always 12 fire fighters ready for response on site 24
hours a day.
They are called emergency services because they do much more
then fighting fire. Some of those included responding to accidents, water rescue and environmental disaster
At the end of the day the firemen get to cook themselves a meal
and relax in a bunker prepared to respond with in a moment’s
notice
Myth. They do not rescue cats out of trees. They reason is …
Have you ever seen a dead cat in a tree.

Letters to the Editors
Dear Editor,
My name is Jo-Anne Patrice Dolan and I am a participant at QVSS (Quinte Vocational Support Services) and I have been a participant here for about 2-3 years now and they have
plenty of programs to offer.
Programs that I have taken and participated in are coffee talk where we sit in a group and
talk about our weekends, current events, and we discuss articles in the newspaper. We get
to enjoy a nice coffee and a treat. I am part of the photography program , which we are starting this week which I’m excited for because I love to take pictures. I took beat the heat already and we would play board games, be on the computer doing our own things, play the
Wii or Xbox, play cards, watch movies, do a puzzle, draw and lots of other options. I also
made a recipe with the news and views members for a banana cinnamon pear ginger upside
down cake, it was delicious!
At QVSS we are given many opportunities to try out new things and to visit places we may
have not been before. I’m very excited to go on the Jamaica trip in November. We will be
going on the 17th and returning on the 25th. Before August I need to save up my money for
the trip so I can have a good time. I’m looking forward to the beautiful weather. I won’t believe it till I see it!
Outside of QVSS I take part in working at the car wash on Dundas Street every other Friday
and Saturday and I enjoy coffee on my breaks because Tim Horton’s is right beside it. I also
go to McDonalds because my sister gave me a McDonald’s gift card which was very nice of
her. I go to the McDonald’s in Walmart for coffee and a carrot muffin. I also shop there and
buy books for top buy; books that plan my diet or schedule because I’m someone who likes
to have a written plan. Such as a plan on meals, and staying healthy. Every other Tuesday I
go to the movie theatre with April, Tanya, and Crystal and sometimes Kylie and enjoy the
snacks and the entertainment. I loved the last movie I recently just seen which was the new
angry bird movie and it was a great show!
I am also very happy with myself throughout this year because I lost 48 pounds and I received a charm because of my achievement. I’m still working on losing more within the next
couple months. I do my own banking which I’m happy about, and I am independent with it.

Letters to the Editors
My name is Kevin DeVrieis and I am a participant here at QVSS (Quinte
Vocational Support Services) and I wanted to write a little autobiography.
I love coming to QVSS and doing programs and being a part of the community. I am into sports, and love doing shot put. I am a part of the running for the blind and Special Olympics that take
place at St. Theresa High school. There are plenty of sports such as running, shot put, long jump, it’s just like track and
field that almost everyone has participated in throughout school. My dad is the one who will be taking me to participate in
the run. I am very excited for that day.
I’m a very caring person and during morning arrivals and end of the day pick up’s I usually stand outside and
observe as well as help others to make sure they make it safely across the street as well as getting picked up.
At QVSS I take programs such as bowling, which was always fun! As of right now ,I am in the news and views
class, and I go fishing with Charlotte throughout the week. On days where I cannot go fishing due to rain or bad whether
we take the van and go out shopping. After we enjoy Tim’s before we head back to agency. I am in photography as well,
and we have taken some pictures outside of QVSS. I’m hoping we go somewhere really nice to take some awesome pictures! This year I participated in the big bike for heart and stroke. We biked from the Quinte Mall all the way to Donini’s
chocolate and back. We raised around $2500, which was a great success. The ones who raised the most were given
gifts, and t-shirts. I was one of those winners.
On my spare time at home I watch movies. My favorite type of movies are comedy and I also watch sport shows, such
as the NHL Hockey. My favorite team is the Ottawa Senators. I do a few chores around the house such as mopping and I
set the table before we eat! Soon I’ll be saying goodbye to the house I am in, and moving to a much smaller place. I have
moved a couple of times, but now I’m moving close to downtown Belleville. I live with my mom and dad, and used to live
with my sisters but they have grown up and started their own families with beautiful children. This move will get me more
familiar with the Belleville area, and be able to meet new people. Moving is always a new experience. I only live five
minutes down the street from QVSS so it’s easy transportation for me, but now my bus ride to QVSS is going to be a bit
longer which means that I will have to wake up a bit earlier than usual. Moving in any household is stressful, you’re worried about leaving something behind or possibly not liking your new place, but hopefully things will turn out great! I’d also
like to thank all the staff here, and all my friends at QVSS and in the community for supporting me and helping me be
successful throughout this year. I hope everyone has a good summer.

Jack Laviolette
Provincial body recognizes Belleville born hockey hero, who was the first French Canadian hockey superstar for the Montreal Canadians. They called him Captain Jack.
This fact was a surprise even to the board of the local Hastings County Historical Society
when it received notice a few months back that Jack Laviolette was going to be recognized by the Ontario Heritage Trust with a commemorative plaque.
The plaque will be unveiled at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre on Thursday, June
23rd at 11am.
Jean-Baptiste (Jack) Laviolette was born in Belleville in July 1879 to a French family while
his father was working in the area in the lumber industry. Later the Laviolette family returned to Quebec where Jack began his hockey career. In 1909, Jack was asked to assemble a team of French-Canadian hockey player to open up the new Montreal Canadiens franchise. He acquired players familiar to hockey historians: Newsy Lalonde, Didier
Pitre and George Veznia for that team. And the rest is history.
In honor of their contributions to the early history of the Montreal Canadiens hockey franchise, Laviolette is one of four players born in Ontario being recognized this year in various locations throughout Ontario by Ontario Heritage Trust.
If hockey is your thing, and even if it’s not, you are invited to come to the Sports and Wellness Centre to hear the whole story and witness the unveiling of the Ontario Heritage
Trust commemorative plaque honoring this little known local sports hero.
