Welcome to the Vancouver
Academy of Music
The Vancouver Academy of Music believes in the inspiring and
transcendental nature of the performing arts. The practical
impact of music is immediate: it enhances communication,
serves as a tool for personal development, leads to better
academic achievement and provides a sense of belonging
and community.
VAM is an inclusive learning environment that is committed to
sharing the benefits of the performing arts through a structured
learning environment that recognizes cultural differences
and unique learning needs. The VAM platform aims to foster
artistic and personal growth in all of our students.
Founded in 1969, VAM is Vancouver’s most established music
school offering a comprehensive curriculum for instrumental,
voice, early childhood, and ballet training. Located minutes
from downtown Vancouver, VAM is situated in the natural
green setting of Vanier Park across from the Planetarium at
Kits Point, with close to 100 parking stalls reserved for VAM
students and patrons.
VAM aims to produce civic-minded students who use their
collaborative performing arts experiences to enrich the
health and well-being of their community, as well as reinforcing
the importance of Arts and Culture in our society. VAM recruits
faculty members with strong professional credentials who
are devoted to the instruction of a new generation of performers,
teachers, composers and audiences.

Learning Mandarin Through
Music (LMTM)
Developed at Vancouver Academy of Music, Learning
Mandarin through Music (LMTM) is a unique language
program which offers children the experience and joy of
learning Mandarin through rhythm and rhyme, song, finger
play, expressive movement, dance, drama and instrument
playing. These fun-filled musical and language ‘games’ will
foster the development of essential Mandarin language
skills: speaking in correct tones, recognizing graphic symbols and translating them to corresponding tones/sounds,
and analyzing speech patterns. Developed in a supportive
and encouraging class environment, LMTM offers a learning
template that establishes the essential building blocks for
speaking, reading and writing Mandarin.

Early Childhood
Education Program
Language Arts
“Bach Babies”, “Mozart Mites” and “Rossini Rascals” offer
an introduction to the benefits of music education for
parent and child. It has been proven that musical training
has a large impact on the development of the brain,
especially language, speech, attention, memory, and the
ability to express emotions vocally. Through listening, playing
instruments, singing, activities and movement, you and your
child will internalize these benefits and enjoy bonding while
enriching your lives with the gift of music!
- Bach Babies is for children ages 3-18 months.
- Mozart Mites is for children ages 18 months to 3 years.
- Rossini Rascals is for children ages 3 to 4 years.
Writer’s Circle
In this course, students will actively explore the elements
of powerful writing that will help them through their school
career and beyond. Strategies will include The 6 Traits of
Writing and Adrienne Gear’s Writing Power. Lessons will
look at the importance of ideas, organization, voice, word
choice, sentence fluency, conventions and the presentation
of their written work. Time will be set aside each class to
experience a variety of genres and students will produce
short-story writing pieces to add to their writing portfolio.
Taught by a certified elementary teacher. Ages 8 and up or
by permission from instructor.

Power Reading and Language Arts
Reading comprehension is tested on most entrance exams
for elementary and secondary schools and every year
during the Foundation Skills Assessment Test (FSAs) of
all students in Grades 4 and 7 by the B.C. provincial
government. This new course is ideal for students who
are interested in improving their reading, strengthening
their comprehension and developing an appreciation for
literature. Students will learn effective strategies to build
their reading comprehension and language art skills using
Adrienne Gear’s Reading Power and the Reading 44
program by the North Vancouver School District. Taught
by a certified elementary teacher. Ages 8 and up or by
permission from instructor.

Kodaly Program
Based on the use of the unaccompanied singing voice, it
develops accuracy of pitch as well as teaching, writing, and
listening skills. It thus forms a solid basis for every kind of
music study. At the pre-school and kindergarten levels, the
emphasis is on action songs and carefully chosen games
to form the foundation of musical skills. Children learn to
recognize melodic and harmonic relationships between
pitches through their experience with simple folk material,
songs, and games. Hand signs are used as a visual aid to help
establish pitch, and the use of signs with both hands helps
teach intervals and independent part-singing.
VAM offers nine levels of sequential instruction beginning
at the pre-school level.

Suzuki Program
Dr. Shinichi Suzuki developed a program of music instruction
for young children based upon the belief that children can
learn to play musical instruments as naturally and effectively
as they learn to speak. Dr. Suzuki believed that the environment
a child lives in is of supreme importance to the development
of learned skills. Musical skills can be nurtured at home by
parents in the same way many other skills are developed. Suzuki
parents attend lessons with their children, and become
acquainted with the ideas and techniques introduced by the
teacher so that they can carry through the learning process
in daily practice at home. Parental support is vital to the
musical development of Suzuki students.
Pre-registration meetings with parents are held before
students are enrolled in Suzuki violin, viola, cello, harp, and
piano. After enrolment, parents and children attend group
preparation classes which explain the fundamental skills
of playing, demonstrate care and handling of instruments,
and introduce ideas regarding how parents and children
can work together to foster an interest in music. Individual
lessons begin when it is agreed that the child is ready to
learn to play and the parent is ready to make the necessary
commitment to assist.
Once the student can play the beginning pieces, a weekly
group performance class takes the place of the group
preparation class.
