early five years ago, I traveled up Highway
49 numerous times to visit my ninety-nineyear-old grandmother while she was a patient at
Stone County Hospital. Today, as I enter the lobby
of our hospital each day, I think of her. Each time
I walk the halls, I recall how confident I felt about
the care she received during her lengthy stay. My
“Papoo” was a remarkable women, and for my
family, nothing but the best was good enough for
her. We felt she was safe, she was kept comfortable,
and was treated with dignity and respect. As the
hospital Administrator, I want every patient and
family that comes to Stone County Hospital to feel
the same way I did.
N
One of the best ways for us to gain knowledge
of your experience at Stone County Hospital is
through our Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients
are randomly selected to receive a survey either by
telephone, email or in the mail. We hope that you
will take the time to complete your survey when
it arrives.
Why do I care about how you perceive your
recent visit? I have been a Registered Nurse for 35
years. Both of my parents were in the healthcare
field. It is truly in my heart to know that each
and every patient receives quality care. It is my
expectation that your care was given with utmost
professionalism and respect. Our healthcare team
wants you to feel absolutely confident in the care
we provide every day.
My promise to you: If you take the time to
complete and submit our survey, I will personally
review the results of the surveys with our team.
These valued responses will provide us the
opportunity to improve our policies, practices,
and procedures. Our goal is to ensure that we are
providing the best possible health care experience
for our patient and families.
"We want you to have confidence
in Stone County Hospital as your
health care provider.”

Tips to Help Fight Childhood Obesity
with Grace Ford, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC)
September is National Childhood Obesity Month created to
provide helpful tips to combat the rise in obesity rates affecting
our youth at an alarming rate.
hildhood obesity rates have increased fourfold among those aged 6 to 11. This epidemic
puts nearly one third of America’s children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood
pressure, heart disease and even stroke – conditions usually associated with adulthood.
There are opportunities every day to change these trends. A wellness visit with one of our
friendly family practice providers, like Nurse Practitioner Grace Ford from our Poplarville
Clinic, can be a valuable first step. Grace can assess your child’s overall health, including
evaluating their weight using tools like a Body Mass Index (BMI) to see where they rank versus
normal conditions.

JOHNNIE DAVIS WRITES:

very knowledgeable and competent. They even escorted me to my vehicle and
that was very much appreciated.”

Free Kindergarten Vision Screenings:
Perkinston & Stone Elementary
August 4
Parents often mistake vision screenings for a full eye exam. Screenings are short
assessments used to alert parents to possible vision problems and the need for a full
eye exam. Screenings only check vision accuracy at a distance. A comprehensive
exam evaluates near and far vision, eye alignment, focus, shape and depth
perception, and possible diseases or disorders. Your child can have 20/20 distance
vision and still have near vision problems and other issues.
25% of children require some sort of vision correction, but 67% of them do not get
the help they need. To make an appointment for your child, please call The Vision
Center at 601-928-3914.

HEALTHY AGING MONTH:
QUALITY CARE, RIGHT HERE AT HOME.
Treatments to Ensure Healthy Bones
with Kevin O’Hea, MD
If you are 50 or older, chances are that a doctor, like Dr.
Kevin O’Hea, has spoken to you about the importance
of good bone health. Maintaining the strength of your
bones helps prevent fractures from falls, one of the most
common reasons seniors visit the emergency room or are
in the hospital.
ost seniors know to begin increasing their calcium and Vitamin D intake, but many do not
realize that your doctor should advise you on how much of these supplements to take and
monitor any side effects that your existing medications may be having on your bone health.
Dr. O’Hea recommends bone density testing, commonly known as Dexascan, every two years
for seniors. The scan is fast, accurate, pain-free and has very low radiation. SCH offers these
tests and, in most cases, results are ready the same day. In addition, SCH also offers Reclast drug
treatments to treat osteoporosis. It is a once a year injection that takes only 15 minutes and frees
patients from the need for weekly or monthly drugs.
M
