THE CLIVEDEN NEWSLETTER
SPRING/SUMMER 2016
SPRING
INTO SUMMER
Spring has definitely arrived, the Parterre is ablaze with
colour, and the air is heady with the scent of hyacinths;
with the promise of warm summer days ahead and such
a fabulous setting to enjoy, we are delighted to offer a
complimentary night’s accommodation when you book a
short break at Cliveden House. Our ‘Three-Nights for the
Price of Two’ offer is available until the 31st October.
Cliveden has been named as one of the finest
hotel properties in the world in the latest
edition of the Forbes Travel Guide. Serving as
one of the most authoritative indicators for
guests seeking exceptional travel experiences,
the Forbes recommended awards are the gold
standard in the hospitality industry worldwide.
WELCOME
Dear Friends,
With spring racing by and the seasons continuing to confound us,
the planting schemes throughout the estate are running ahead of
themselves with a riot of colour and the promise of stunning floral
displays to come.
We have had a productive start to the year and have completed
the refurbishment of our Garden Wing bedrooms. This is quite
a milestone moment and we are now pleased to say that all our
bedrooms have been fully refurbished, along with our reception
rooms and behind the scenes areas too.
The last phase of works has seen the creation of The Churchill
meeting room, a wonderfully equipped, light and airy event space
for up to 40 delegates.
Most noteworthy is that we have taken the old stables and turned
them into The Astor Grill. This is now an informal and stylish
restaurant, which will be open to guests for all day dining. André
Garrett and his team will be in charge of the Kitchen so we are
especially excited to welcome you to come and experience this new
eatery.
Excitingly, we have been able to establish a Cellar Tour for our
guests to enjoy. It takes you through the 17th Century tunnels
below the house. It is an atmospheric, informative and fun tour and
can be booked in advance if you are staying at Cliveden. I might
even be the one to guide you and share the history of the house
along the way.
I hope you enjoy the following pages and are tempted to visit us
soon.
With all good wishes,

AND SO TO BED
We are thrilled that the final phase of the
restoration of Cliveden House has now been
completed with the transformation of the
bedrooms in the former Garden Wing.
During this remarkable renovation we have
brought Cliveden back to life, flooding rooms
with fabulous colours, luxurious fabrics and
textiles, creating opulent rooms and suites
that truly reflect the history and beauty of this
stunning house.
Our design team, lead by the remarkable Mario
Nicolaou has since January 2014 worked with
great passion and enthusiasm on this project
which has been an absolute labour of love
and like all great love stories, not without its
challenges. But we are delighted to share our
final eleven bedrooms with you.

In celebration of one of England’s greatest attractions and to
mark the 300th anniversary of landscape gardener, ‘Capability’
Brown, 2016 has been declared the ‘Year of the English Garden’.
The impressive gardens at Cliveden, perched high on the cliffs
overlooking the River Thames will be looking at their best, and you
can follow in the footsteps of film stars, dukes, earls and royalty
as you discover a series of impressive gardens from the formal
Parterre with its amazing floral displays; the newly restored, English
Rose Garden (with over 900 roses) to the stunning Oriental Water
Garden, and enjoy the many breathtaking vistas on the ‘Cliveden’s
Views’ trail. The seasons are highlighted with the most wonderful
displays of flowers. Here are highlights to discover when staying at
Cliveden this spring and summer.
•
April/May – Over 12,500
tulips under-planted with
pansies, polyanthus, forgetme-knots and wallflowers
will create a carpet of colour
on the six acre Parterre.
•
May – The woodlands
at Cliveden are liberally
sprinkled with bluebells, but
head to the Pheasantry and
Fitness Trail for the best
displays.
•
June – The Jellicoe Rose
Garden displays over 900
repeat flowering roses
with colours phasing from
yellow and orange through
to velvety reds and deep
crimsons.
•
July – The Long Garden
will be planted with 10,000
Devil’s Delight Begonias.
Creating a sea of pastel pink,
purple and white blooms,
and the Parterre will have its
summer display of 30,000
multi coloured bedding
plants including zinnias,
dianthus, ageratum, and
snapdragons.
•
August – The displays in the
Parterre, Long Garden and
Rose Garden will be in full
bloom
•
September – The Round
Garden will be displaying 90
varieties of heritage apples
and pears ripening on the
trees – delicious.

WELCOME TO THE ASTOR GRILL
The Astor Grill is a relaxed and convivial new
restaurant which is located in the charming old
stable block, which once housed Lord Astor’s
most prized fillies. Adopting an equestrian theme
in its décor, The Astor Grill is full of character,
offering a simple and informal approach to dining
at Cliveden.
Adjacent to the Main House, The Astor Grill
has seating for 38 guests with the fabulous
Clocktower Courtyard redesigned as an al fresco
seasonal terrace seating up to 40 guests. The
modern all-day menu is overseen by Executive
Chef André Garrett and it focuses on a mixture
of classic American and British dishes, many
reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and
residents. The name – The Astor Grill – recalls
the Astor family, who owned the house from the
early 1900s. William Waldorf Astor, America’s
richest citizen, then gave the house to his son and
6
8
daughter-law, Nancy Astor, in 1906 when Cliveden
became a vibrant social hub for guests as diverse
as Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and
Winston Churchill.
The Astor Grill today is a cosmopolitan venue
which is steeped in history, its romantic setting
offers all the style and legendary hospitality that
Cliveden is famous for, and it is the perfect place
to escape and read the papers or enjoy a cheeky
glass of Champagne as well as a late brunch, early
lunch, afternoon treat or a relaxed supper with
someone special.
Open from 09.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. seven days a
week, gentle jazz music drifts across the luxurious
setting of the courtyard, and this slightly quirky,
relaxed restaurant provides a fabulous alternative
dining venue to the award winning André Garrett
Restaurant.

BRINGING CHURCHILL
BACK TO LIFE
Winston Churchill was a regular guest at Cliveden
in Nancy Astor’s era, and although they did not
often agree, we think they would thoroughly
approve of the new Churchill conference
facilities which have been built in the Clocktower
Courtyard, adjacent to The Astor Grill restaurant.
This bespoke meeting room is situated in the
former mews garage complex. Equipped with the
latest technology and plenty of natural daylight
there is also parking close by. At the heart of the
house, Churchill also has access to a private paved
courtyard and the use of two syndicate rooms
located nearby, and offers meeting space for 30
delegates or theatre seating for 50.
This new facility, complements perfectly the
meeting rooms known as Waldo’s in the East
Wing. Comprising of two interconnecting spaces
conveniently situated next to the Screening
Room, a private cinema and reception area, and
the atmospheric Cellar Dining Room, a perfect
location for private dining and a glass of wine!

FORAGING FOR FUN… OR BUSINESS
We have a varied programme of team building and incentive activities for guests to
enjoy at Cliveden, but one of the latest is proving very popular – and very tasty!
Foraging is growing in
popularity with increasing
enthusiasm for gathering
healthy and nutritious food from
wild and natural places. The
trend is particularly relevant in
today’s climate of unacceptable
food waste and with the current
interest in creative events
combining food and nature
you have a perfect recipe for a
memorable activity.
In partnership with the artisan
producer of award-winning
jams and conserves ‘Naked Jam’,
groups can now experience
bespoke foraging events at
Cliveden. Enjoying a guided
ramble tailored to the seasons,
guests will explore hundreds of
acres of woodland and formal
gardens with expert forager
Jennifer Williams.
There will be an opportunity
to learn about and gather the
wide range of seasonal wild
foods that grow on the estate,
including hedgerow berries,
leaves, flowers and fruits.
Jennifer will then help the guests
transform the day’s bounty into
delicious cordials and cocktails
which they can take home, along
with the recipes and a souvenir
guide to foraging.

THE AMERICA’S CUP
There is glamour, money, legal challenges, crazy
rules and a host of history and quirks … and that
is all before the racing starts! The America’s Cup
was founded in 1851 and this version takes place
between 2015 and 2017, the event pre-dates the
modern Olympics and is the oldest international
sporting trophy in the world. It has only ever been
won by four countries and never by Britain.
However, we hope this is all about to change with
the 35th America’s Cup and Sir Ben Ainslie’s team
Land Rover BAR which represents the best chance
Britain has had in the last 165 years to win this
incredible trophy. With immense experience from
Sir Keith Mills (Deputy Chairman London 2012
Olympic Games and Chairman Invictus Games),
technical excellence from team CEO Martin
Whitmarsh, headline sponsorship from Land Rover
and technical and engineering support by BT and
BAE Systems - things are shaping up well.
Prior to the 35th America’s Cup taking place in
Bermuda in May - June 2017, Cliveden and its sister
hotel Chewton Glen have been given a fabulous
opportunity to share the excitement of the final
qualifying racing in UK waters off Portsmouth
on the 21-24th July, with unrestricted VIP access
to the Victory Lounge hospitality and viewing
pavilion, which is set up in the Portsmouth event
ticketed ‘Race Village’ overlooking the racing
taking place literally metres from the shoreline.
For guests flying into the UK to watch the racing,
the hotels close proximity to Heathrow Airport,
and London makes it an ideal starting point for
the America’ Cup adventure. 14
Price from £1,190.00 per person based on
two guests sharing a Classic Room for the
Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series
race package, Supplements apply for
alternative room categories. Transport can
be arranged at an additional cost.
