MEDIA RELEASE
Four decades of sauna innovation
June 1974. Tony Küng goes into business for himself and sells his first sauna. The rest is history.
When something is history, it means it is important, and it has leſt its mark. In the 40 years since it
was founded, Küng AG Saunabau has definitely leſt its mark. Its founder was never content - in a good
way - and his pioneering innovations shaped sauna construction in Switzerland more than virtually
any other sauna builder. Many of these innovations are considered to be standard equipment on the
market today, making it easy to forget all of the research and development that went into them.
Most of the construction and components in a Küng sauna and many of their sauna types and layouts
are patented or protected by design trademarks. Tony Küng also played a role in making sauna use as
popular as it is in Switzerland today. He quickly did away with the notion that a sauna was something
to hide in the cellar and transformed it into a stylish object for living areas and gardens by shiſting the
focus to architecture and design.
Glass, stone and chrome
Among the stylistic and functional refinements he developed are the frameless glass front,
spring-mounted benches and backrests, the organic sauna and integrated colour therapy. Küng was
combining the traditional sauna material, Nordic wood, with new materials like glass, stone and chrome
several decades ago. He was a pioneer of the glass sauna, especially frameless glass fronts and corner
windows. Glass opens up the interior, making the sauna appear spacious and light even when it has
a small footprint. The carefully designed interior also adds to the sense of transparency.
Other patented in-house developments include benches where each individual slat is double sprung.
Technology and modern design are nice, but what ultimately sets Küng saunas apart is their
incomparably warm, soothing atmosphere. And speaking of soothing, the gentle low-temperature s
auna with 55°C heat and 45% humidity, which is known by different names today and is also considered
a standard feature, was developed by a German naturopath in the 1970s.
And once again it was Tony Küng who introduced this feature at the time under the BIOSA® brand,
despite initial resistance within the industry.

Manufacturing with a home advantage
Every sauna is a one-of-a-kind product, most of which is made by hand in the company's own
workshops by Lake Zurich.
"Our saunas are custom-tailored to meet our customers' exact needs," Tony Küng says proudly.
Carefully designed details and extraordinary materials fulfil individual design requirements, provide
greater comfort, and are essential for maximum sauna enjoyment
The sauna as an attitude towards life
Having a sauna is no longer something trendy; for many people, it has become a regular part of
personal care, personal fitness and time off. More and more homeowners are investing in their own
sauna and are looking for both high quality and beautiful design. Here, design is about more than just
looks; it also refers to effective use of the oſten limited space. "We find stunning solutions for even the
smallest spaces," says owner Tony Küng, whose signature can be found in every sauna model from
Wädenswil. The way to a comfortable, personalised sauna begins with a thorough consultation.
The best place for this is the 800 Square meter Küng exhibition in Wädenswil, which uses practical
examples to illustrate ideas and solutions. The company recognises that a sauna is as personal as
clothing or interior furnishings, so it gladly takes as much time and planning effort as needed to
understand and achieve its customers' unique ideas.
