Editor’s Message
This was an exciting issue of the publication to put together. I had the opportunity to work with some great
people on articles that I think the readership will enjoy and learn from. I hope that in time I will be receiving
articles on a more consistent basis. Remember, you don’t have to be a “writer” to submit an article. You just have
to have something to tell us—a story about your Welsh pony/cob and your child, training tips, an experience with
foaling/showing/performing/anything that is applicable to the Welsh community. Keep in mind that I will help
you craft your article to reach its potential—I edit every piece that comes in.
I would love to hear more stories of people’s accomplishments with their Welsh—and that doesn’t just mean
championships, but as one member said, personal bests. For instance, once family had a pony they couldn’t touch
a month previous to the show; they worked with him, and when he got to the show, he made his owners proud.
Tell us about your personal bests—they don’t have to be dramatic to be interesting or important.
On a provincial level, three people in particular have been doing a terrific job of consistently keeping us informed
of their province’s Welsh activities: Myriam Bougie of Quebec, Marie Howran of Ontario, and Pat Clay of
Alberta. Thank you all for your support of the magazine, and of myself. I would like to see ambassadors from
more provinces step up and commit to sending provincial news for every issue.
On page 20 begins a section devoted to the 2012 Royal Welsh winners. My sincere thanks to our overseas friends
who provided photos and articles on their ponies and cobs—it’s a pleasure to be able to not only showcase
Canadian winners, but also those from where our wonderful Welsh originated.
I hope to begin profiling Welsh excelling in the performance world. If you know of one such pony/cob who has
been promoting our Welsh breed through their excellence within their discipline, please nominate them for
profiling (you may nominate your own animal). Thank you to Karen Chorney for suggesting this worthwhile
section. On the topic of profiles, remember breeder profiles are still in effect, and send yours in! To note re: new
sections: I will continue the Welsh Ancestory, but to make room for more articles, it will not be in every issue.
Well done to all those who put the time, effort, and finances into their Welsh in all their endeavors this summer! I
look forward to hearing about them in the next issue of Welsh in Canada.

Manitoba Welsh Pony
& Cob Celebrate 38th
Show
Written by Donna Hunter; WPCAM Secretary
Photo of Donna Hunter (Kenview), Russel Morton, judge Darlene Morton (Morton’s Show Stable), and Doreen Lawlor (LS Stables)
This past July, the Manitoba Welsh Pony and Cob Association held their 38th consecutive All Welsh
Pony Show. It was held in Virden, July 7th and 8th 2012. With 50 ponies in attendance, it was a very
successful show.
Darlene Morton from Sharon, Ontario capably judged our two-day show. Darlene and her husband
Russell are noted Welsh breeders from the Morton’s Stud, have imported from UK many times and
are well known in the Welsh world. Merrilee Bond from Kenton was our ringmaster, and Julie
Hunter from Virden our announcer. Sally Dale was our photographer.
Exhibitors came from all over Manitoba and
Saskatchewan. This year we had many delightful
and talented children—they just make our show.
Their enthusiasm seems to rub off on adults and
makes the show a happy place to be.
Our grand champions were:
SECTION A – Crystal Spring’s Captain Valiant
owned by Donna Jack of Rocanville, Saskatchewan
SECTION B – La Mar’s Cameo owned by Eileen
Eagle Bears of Minto, Manitoba

After a long hot day, the Virden Agriculture Ladies

workers.
Next year we hope to celebrate our 39th show, a record
no other horse or pony breed can challenge in
Manitoba.

2012 MANITOBA
WELSH PONY & COB SHOW
Written by Darlene Morton
Morton Stables, Ontario
I was invited to judge the Welsh Ponies and Cobs at the Manitoba All Welsh Pony Show in Virden,
Manitoba. After arriving at Winnipeg International airport, accompanied by my husband Russel, we
drove three hours through farmland viewing endless fields of bales of hay as far as the eye could see,
to our destination at Virden, not far from the Saskatchewan border.
Saturday, July 7th dawned sunny to start the long list of
Welsh breeding classes. It started with a full slate of
Section A’s, where Crystal Springs Captain Valiant (MyMars Captain Oats x Chantilly Lace) owner Donna Jack
of Saskatchewan and my eventual Supreme Champion
of the show came from. It was apparent that Mountain
Ponies are the Section most bred at this time in this part
of Canada. It was an easy choice to make a Junior
Champion out of the delightful foal Crystal Springs
Classic Piper, also owned and bred by Donna and Herb
Jack. Unfortunately, as is often the case with foals, she
faded by the time the Grand Champion classes were
judged, or she would have figured into them.

A bit disappointing was the shortage of Section B’s presented, although the lovely mare La-Mar
Cameo (Morton’s Selwyn x Young’s Golden Legacy),
Photo: Sally Dale
was well shown by owner Michael Eagle Bears to be
the winner of the mare class. This lovely mare would
be a respectable winner at any large Welsh show and
was the Section B Champion and went on to be the
Reserve Supreme Champion. It was not until after
the show was over that I was to learn she was by a
stallion I had bred and his dam, GlanNant Sunshine
had won so many Grand Championships for us for so
many years and by the imported *Rhoson Pasiant.
Sunday was day two of the show with the
performance classes of ridden, driven, jumping and
games, and fun classes. The Champion Ridden pony
was BF Dapper Tinker Bell (Crystal Springs Dapper Duke x Prairie Ridge Cindy Rose), beautifully
turned out and ridden western by Eileen Eagle Bears. It was a constant battle between first in the
driving classes between Driving Champion, Duane Stewart’s CDE Cob Northern Cross Oliver
Twist, and Reserve Driving Champion, Neil Hastings sweet little bay Section A mare, Crystal
Springs Classic Cameo. This mare had been an all rounder as she was ridden by Natalie Hastings
both English, Western, jumped, and then did the western games. It was also so rewarding to see the
Reserve Supreme Champion, La-Mar Cameo perform in the jumping, western ridden, and games.

It was evident that everyone had a most enjoyable weekend with their loved ponies and the
camaraderie was constant throughout the show. I wish to thank the Manitoba Welsh Pony & Cob
Association for inviting me, my very able ringmaster, Merrilee Bond, announcer Julie Hunter, and
photographer Sally Dale (from whom all these photos were kindly submitted). Also my spouse,
Russel, for assisting with the hard decision of judging the costume class.

News from the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of Alberta
As we wrap up another successful All Breed Pony Show in Cochrane, Alberta, once again we
pride ourselves on having run a fun, friendly, family show. Four people who attended the first
show were there, Pat as co-manager and trophy person, Jim as gate person, Millie Pratt who
helped with the ribbons, and Judy Owad, a junior exhibitor at the
first show, on the out gate. Jean Crawford was our medic, and her
daughter, Melissa, who also has been a junior exhibitor, was jack-ofall-trades, filling in wherever needed. Sadly Sheila McLellan, an
original show committee member and long-time Supreme Show
Champion sponsor was unable to be with us due to ill health.

I know there was great discussion about having the over fences
classes first, but it worked out very well. Jumps were set the night
before, children and ponies were fresh and eager to go, and the
biggest bonus for us was there was lots of help to take the jumps
down and load them. Other years, it has been the exhausted show
committee members and the odd exhibitors left to do this huge job.
Meanwhile, the halter exhibitors had lots of time to prepare their
ponies and there was no confusion at the gate.
Our generous sponsors made it possible for champions to be awarded $50 and the reserves a
saddle pad, slinky, or lead shank. All first place ponies won $20, second $10 and third $5.
As usual, the show started on time and this
year ran with no breaks. The way the classes
were set up, there was lots of time for people to
get food from the concession. And of course
Monty, being the announcer, made sure
everyone was at the gate on time. Terry, our
wonderful ringmaster, was there to make sure
the ring was properly run, while our judge
Janice took time with the younger exhibitors to
encourage them with their riding skills.
As one of the show managers, I can’t thank
Natalie enough for the great job she does as
show secretary. She is so organized that if she
weren’t there, the show would not be run so
efficiently.

Of course, there always is a little glitch, and this time it was my fault for not listing Prairie Sun
Welsh Ponies of Drumheller as a sponsor of two classes.
Thanks to all those who supported the show, it’s thanks to people like you that the show has run so
long. Looking forward to next year!

STAMPEDE!
Submitted by Pat Clay
Secretary of the Alberta WPCS
Under sunny skies, the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede was held on July 6th to 15th. For
the first five days, the Welsh ponies entertained record crowds in the Horse Haven. At this time, I
would like to thank the following for their great support of the Welsh breed.
On Friday, July 6th, Judy Owad brought her five-year-old half Welsh mare, Tyalow Nifty Miss. Nifty
had attended the Stampede as a foal, so this was nothing new for her. Around noon, Nat from the
Northern Lights arena asked if we could put on a demonstration. Although Judy did not have any
proper riding tack, she rode Nifty bareback with just a halter and lead shank. She put on a very
impressive demo showing the versatility of Welsh breed.
In the afternoon, Wendy Stephens, who was up from Texas to compete in the Cowboy Up
Challenge, approached us. Wendy wanted to see if they could put her Section B stallion, Flying
Diamond the Bailef in our booth for some promotion. This was a thrill for us, as The Bailef was a
beautiful grey with perfect manners. He was quite a hit with everyone who came by. The Bailef had
been invited to compete in the Challenge against twelve horses (mostly Quarter horses) and one
mule. We were a bit upset after the first day when the announcer referred to The Bailef as a little
horse. However, on the second and third days, even though he still called him a little horse, he did at
least announce The Bailef was a Welsh pony. The Bailef qualified for the finals and although he did
not have a very good run, he certainly was the crowd favorite. Bailef’s owner, Janice Early, and
Wendy were very pleased to have made it to the finals and had a great time promoting their pony.
On Saturday, Mary James from Prairie Sun Welsh of Drumheller brought her four-year-old Welsh
mare, Prairie Sun Alika Lass with her three-month-old colt, Prairie Sun Royal Legacy. These two
ponies were a great hit, as the mare was black and the foal a cream. It was interesting to hear the
comments from people who did not believe that the foal belonged to the mare. Mary was really a
great promoter of the breed and had a wonderful time visiting with the record crowd that stopped at
our booth. She had the out-of-town visitors sign our guest book. It was interesting how many people
were from Great Britain!
On Sunday and Monday, Brenda Harder from Coyote Run Welsh and Vanessa Quartly brought
two ponies in for the two days. Brenda brought her four-year-old mare, Coyote Run Esper, who
spent most of the time visiting with everyone who stopped by. Vanessa brought her ten-year-old
Section C mare, Classic Royal Kiltie. Vanessa and Kiltie put on a riding demonstration in the
Northern Lights arena. Both Brenda and Vanessa were busy in the booth as again record crowds
visited the Horse Haven.
On Tuesday, we were very fortunate to have Claire, Megan, and Matthew Puzey fill in at the last
moment with the Welsh mare, Brat’s Lil Aurora. Again the Welsh breed proved to be a very popular
attraction, and Megan had a great time braiding Aurora’s mane and tail. She also did a great job of
wrapping all four of the pony’s legs. A lot of people wondered if the pony had a broken leg! Aurora
also had a great time at the front of the booth visiting everyone.
Once again a big “thank you” to all whose who spent a long, hot day at the 100th Calgary Stampede.
In closing, a special thanks goes out to Frank Anderson who spent the whole ten days making sure
everyone was well looked after. Frank has been with the Welsh for many years and is presently in
charge of the set-up in the Horse Haven.

August 15, 2012
It is hard to believe that the summer is drawing to a close. Here in Ontario, our summer has been
unusually dry and this has resulted in many crop yields being significantly lower than normal. Not
the least of these has been the hay crops, with some farmers reporting yields decreased by 40-50%
from their normal yield. This has the effect of driving up both the demand and the cost for first cut
hay.
We will be watching local Ontario markets to see what impact, if any, this might have on our
breeders and owners. Second cut hay has taken a growth spurt, with the rain that we have had in
the past couple of weeks, so we are all hoping for a healthy yield to help off-set the shortage of first
cut and ease the cost increases that our breeders and owners are experiencing.
To date, we have had three Welsh shows in Ontario, which have all been very well attended.
Entries overall seem to be up for the year, and the total number of ponies exhibited has increased.
Of greatest note seems to be the current rise in the number of Section A ponies that have been out
to our shows. However, overall numbers continue to be highest in the “B” section of our shows.
As fall seems to be just around the corner and back-to-school planning is getting underway, so too
do our preparations for the Royal Winter Fair, which is the culminating show for our Ontario show
season. This year, if you are planning to attend the Royal Winter Fair, please look for our Ontario
Welsh display booth, which will be on the second floor. We look forward to meeting with friends,
acquaintances and fellow Welsh pony/cob breeders and owners. Please drop by for a chance to put
your feet up and a good pony chat.

The 2012 Canadian All Welsh Show
The 2012 Canadian All Welsh Championship Show was held on August 5th at the Orono Fairgrounds,
in Orono, Ontario. In attendance were 95 Purebred, Half-Welsh, and American Sport Pony
competitors. The judge for the day was Sarah Lang-Romeyn of Gainsboro, Tennessee. The weather
was kind and the major rains that had been predicted held off until the later half of the afternoon. Even
then, they lasted for only a couple of classes before subsiding.
The classes were all of a good size, with this being one of the best turnouts for Section A ponies in
recent years. The following indicates a breakdown of ponies/cobs exhibiting in each section (note:
many Welsh ponies were also exhibited in the Sport Pony classes); the numbers are approximate.
Section A Mountain ponies: 12 ponies
Section B Welsh ponies: 31 ponies
Section C/D cobs: 12 cobs
Half Welsh: 16
Sport Ponies: 52
The Champions in each of the divisions were as follows:
Section A Mountain Pony
Youngstock Champion: GRAND FINALE FOR CARROUSEL, owned by Ruth Whiting, Lily Lane Stables
Mare Champion: LIANNA L S CELINA, owned by Daina Strickland
Stallion Champion: SNOW KISSED LASTING IMPRESSION, owned by Deva Dickson

2012 SUMMER NEWS—ALVESTA
Member News
We had a very successful show season this year—though it was, as usual, short. We won’t name all our
winners, but in retrospect, there was one family who really stood out; this was truly a great year for our
mare, Alvesta Sweet N Spicy. Though she herself has been retired from the showring, three of her
offspring were out in 2012 and did very well—actually all three placed in the Supremes, with the older
two, Alvesta Helios (three-year-old stallion by *Mynach Mystical) and Alvesta La Caramelo (six-year-old
mare by *Rosedale El Senor) both winning Supremes, and the younger, Alvesta Naiya (yearling filly by
*Llanarth Tarquin) winning Res. Supreme. Both Naiya and Helios were entered in the very competitive
Model Hunter and Sport Pony classes and did very well there too, gaining Junior, Senior and Grand
Championships. In our last show of the season, Spice was entered in Produce of Dam, where Helios and
La Caramelo represented her. In a class of five entries (Helios and La Caramelo count as one entry),
under both judges, Spice was awarded first place. It was very nice to see Spice’s quality and prepotency
recognized in the showring, just as we recognize it at home every time we walk out to the field.
Our 2012 foal crop was a great success. We’re very happy with all four of our foals. We had three
Section B’s: black colt, Alvesta Tarquinius, (*Llanarth Tarquin x Alvesta Sweet N Spicy by *CadlanValley
Pirate); chestnut colt, Alvesta Sol Invictus (Alvesta Helios x Morton’s China Doll by *Stockham
Commander M; and chestnut roan filly, Alvesta Ever After (*CadlanValley Pirate x Alvesta Fantasia by
Llandefalle Bonheddwr. We had one Section A foal, the incredibly sweet and typy colt Alvesta Shem
Jones. This is a beautiful crop of foals with great personalities. We look forward to watching them grow.
We are very excited about our 2013 foal crop, as some of our young mares will be having foals for the
first time—but that news will come in the spring.
Sadly, it has been a few years since anyone around Alvesta Farm has ridden. Riding went by the wayside
as our Section B riding ponies *Rosevean Red Admiral and Alvesta Buttons N Bows became elderly;
both wonderful ponies have now passed away. However, this spring and summer our four-year-old
mares, Alvesta Fairy Lustre (*CadlanValley Pirate x Alvesta Mystique by GlanNant Adonis) and Alvesta
Electra (*CadlanValley Pirate x Alvesta Fantasia by Llandefalle Bonheddwr), were lightly started under
saddle. Though they are still very green, we look forward to having both of them—and hopefully more
soon—ridden when they’re not busy with foals.
We’ve had problems with our old website, so we will soon have a new one up. As of now, we rely on

bring to you the top winners from the most prestigious Welsh show in the world. Many thanks

in Britain who submitted photos and articles of their ponies and cobs, and also to Dr. Wynne
Davies for his permission to use passages from his article on the Royal for those who didn’t submit.
“The Royal Welsh Show took place from July 23 to 26, 2012. The glorious weather after months of
rain brought out a record attendance of 240,964 to Llanelwedd, Builth Wells over the four days.
Indeed the mid-afternoon heat on the Wednesday left many Welsh cob stallion handlers gasping for
water! However the final results of Llanarth Delilah (B) and Heniarth Yum Yum (A) for the HOYS
In-hand Cuddy qualifier, Danaway Cracklin Rose (D) with Yum Yum again reserve for the Tom and
Sprightly and the Show Hunter pony Helsington Material Girl (WPB) and Brynodyn Sirius (A)
supreme ridden and reserve, the Welsh spectators would all have gone home in a happy mood. Of
the 3,249 horse and pony entries, 1,817 (56%) were in-hand Welsh with many more in the riding
pony breeding, ridden and driving sections.”

Yum Yum has only ever been
lightly shown throughout her life;
a few outings as a yearling saw
her Supreme Yearling Champion
at Carmarthenshire Association
Show. As a three-year-old she was

placed third at Northleach Breed
Show, and then later that month she impressed Wyn Jones of the Nerwyn Stud sufficiently to award
her the Youngstock Championship at the Royal Welsh Show. In his judge’s report he likened her to
a young Coed Coch Siaradus, which was a huge compliment for us as she of course stems from a
direct female line to that great mare.
As a young mare she suffered some skin cancer on her upper eyelid, which required some regular
treatment, but all soon cleared away.
20
Twice as a brood mare saw her go champion at Kent County and United Counties and then in 2011
we took her to the International Show in Builth Wells where she also won and stood reserve
champion and also stood reserve in the National Welsh finals that year.
This year she travelled to the Royal Bath & West Show where she was Reserve Champion and also
to Cheshire where she was placed a disappointing third. However—when it mattered Yum Yum
gave of her best and took the ultimate award having her name engraved on the Capt. Howson
Memorial Trophy for the Overall Champion Welsh Mountain Pony at the Royal Welsh. She also
won the Kilvrough Trophy that alternates between the A’s and the D’s. Both trophies are deemed
too valuable now to leave the showground, so we received beautiful framed certificates and a
R.W.A.S. gold medal in their place as a permanent keepsake. The overall Welsh Championship is
awarded the Tom & Sprightly Trophy, which Yum Yum was pulled forward in reserve place for—a
similar position was gained also in the Horse of the Year Show “Cuddy” in hand qualifier to be held
in October against all the led breeds at the show. That will be her last show.
Last year her daughter, Heniarth Dilyscious by Heniarth Mr.Milligan, was Champion at the Royal
International Horse Show as a lead rein as well as gaining a third place in the final at the Horse of
the Year Show. Her sister, Heniarth Scrumptious is a brood mare in France and her young son
Heniarth Beaudacious is a young stallion at the long established Hope Stud.
Her pedigree reads like a “who’s who” of the Welsh Stud Book, incorporating two of the best dam
lines within the breed, Coed Coch Siaradus of course and Dinas Moonstone—so in winning the
Royal Welsh she is really representing all those fine lines that have gone before—proving that they
have indeed stood the test of time.

SUNWILLOW KINGSLAKE
Welsh Mountain Pony Stallion,
Foaled 2003
Sire: Pendock Legend (Revel Jeeves
x Pendock Lilac Time by Twyford
Juggler)
Dam: Sunwillow Dido (Randan
Walter x Sunwillow Luzzana by
Coed Coch Norman)
Clive Johnston of Ireland bought
Sunwillow Kingslake as a foal on
advice from his good friend and then
producer, Barry Sheppard of the
Vervale
stud.
Kingslake—or
“Humphrey” as his friends know
him—was only a foal at the time, but
Barry had seen him and thought he was going to be very special. Little did either man know, the colt
was to grow to be a very successful show stallion.
21
Barry produced and showed Kingslake very lightly as a young pony, notching up wins at shows such
as Ponies UK, The National Pony Society, The Royal of England, and West Midland’s Stallion
Show. When Barry moved to sunnier climates to show horses for the Royal stables in UAE (United
Arab Emirates), Clive Johnston brought the now three-year-old Kingslake home to Ireland.
Clive himself showed Kingslake when the stallion was five years old. Racking up Overall Section A
Championships, Supremes, medals, and the very sought after qualifier for the Cuddy In-hand
Championship at the Horse of the Year show, Kingslake proved himself to excel in the showring.
The next year, 2010, Kingslake went to the amazing team at the Lacy Stud, where Colin Tibbey
showed him to wins far too numerous to list. Mr. Tibbey continued to show Kingslake in 2011,
where the stallion won more Supremes and medals. But the highlight of Kingslake’s illustrious
showring career came in 2012.
At the Royal Welsh, the show breeders from around the world come to watch and compete in, Mr.
Tibbey showed Kingslake to Senior Champion Stallion, Male Champion and a Gold Medal.
Sunwillow Kingslake went Res. Overall Section A Champion to the lovely Heniarth Yum Yum, a
mare who is also of Sunwillow breeding. With laughter and happy tears, Mr. Johnston shared his
stallion’s incredible triumph with Ned Dyveg, who has taken over the reins of her mother’s
Sunwillow Stud.
Due to his heavy show schedule, Humphrey has not yet had time for a breeding career. But we must
look forward to this stallion’s influence on the breed.

She has been Champion at Lampeter Stallion Show, and numerous other County Shows as a threeyear-old, culminating in the Welsh International Show in Holland where she was Champion
Youngstock Section B and Overall Reserve Youngstock Champion (to our Welsh Cob 3-year-old!).
22
She was not shown last year (we don’t over-show our babies!), so 2012 was her debut year as a
broodmare, with her first foal at foot (a filly by Llanarth Da Vinci). She was Champion at the Royal
Bath and West Show in June, and 2nd Reserve for the Cuddy (the Supreme in hand) there. Her only
other outing was the Royal Welsh this year.
We were thrilled to be Champion Female and then Champion Welsh Section B. We have never
shown under Mr. Hensby (of the Laithehill Stud in Yorkshire) before so didn’t know whether or not
he would like our ponies! To then go on and win the Supreme in Hand of the Show at the Royal
Welsh Show with her and then qualify for the Cuddy Championships at the Horse of the Year Show
was wonderful. Funnily enough there is only one other Welsh Section B that has qualified for the
‘Cuddy’ this year—and that is our stallion, Boreton White Prince! Amazing!

years ago we decided we
needed our own stallion. We
inquired of Dewi Evans of the Hilin Stud about a stallion quality colt. One June morning, Dewi
phoned to say Glansevin Garland had a stunning colt foal by Eyarth Tayma—a bay with four socks.
Two weeks later off we went to see him. We weren’t disappointed. The colt named Tattoo came
home to us at the end of October. We call him “Spud” because in Welsh, “Tattoo” means potato.
Spud has been an absolute pleasure to own. He is a big part of our family.
I never thought I’d have the confidence to show a stallion, but Spud is very well behaved in the ring
and loves shows. We didn’t show him as a yearling, and later he wasn’t shown a lot, but he did well
when he was, winning championships and reserve championships at such shows as Clwyd WPCS,
Glanusk Stallion Show, Northwestern WPCS Show, and Flint and Denbigh County Show. Then at
five years old, he was fourth at the Royal Welsh.
23
At the 2012 Royal Welsh, Spud had the great honor of winning Male Champion and a gold medal.
Then, unbelievably, he went on to be Reserve Section B Champion. It was a day we will never
forget, and a very special memory.
At the Royal Welsh, Spud qualified for Brightwells National In-hand Championships, which we took
him to, and he won. He also won a silver medal at Angelsey County Show, and a bronze medal at
Stafford County show. It's been a season of proud moments with our Spud.
This year, we have been fortunate enough to have two lovely foals by him. We had a filly named
Byley Reanna out of Byley Arianne (Glansevin Graffiti x Eyarth Alaw by Eyarth Tomahawk), and a
colt named Byley Aragorn out of Eyarth Alaw (Eyarth Tomahawk x Carwed Prima Donna by
Eyarth Celebration). We have been waiting a long time for a colt like this, so we will have to wait and
see. He certainly has his dad’s presence. Next year we will have another mare to cover: three-yearold filly, Telynau Tivoli.

DANAWAY CRACKLIN-ROSE
Royal Welsh Profile: Overall Section D Champion
Welsh Cob, Foaled 2002
Sire: Danaway Tango (Tireinon Triple
Crown x Trevallion Marie)
Dam: Danaway Janella (Trevallion
Harry x Trefforest Ribbon)
Danaway Cracklin-Rose, was born on
the 3rd of May 2002, during the early
hours in a storm. My late father and
myself were there to witness her birth.
The bad weather resulted in her
contracting pneumonia for the first few
days of her life. Bred by my late father,
her dam is Danaway Janella, and her
sire is Danaway Tango (previously
twice Royal Welsh winner). She truly is
her father’s daughter in colouring as
she is a distinctive chestnut roan, just
like him. At only hours old, as my
25
father coiled her red, ringletted mane around his fingers, he fell in love with her. We had saved the
name Cracklin-Rose for a special filly, and as my father thought she was a cracker... Cracklin-Rose it
was to be.
Kept at home for the first two years of her life, in 2004 it was decided that she was to be prepared for
her first show: the Royal Welsh. Our daughter, Cherimarie, took on the task. July arrived, and so the
fairytale began. Under judge Kieth Spensor (Felinmor) she was not only to win her class at the RW,
but went Reserve Youngstock Champion also.
In 2008, we returned her to the showring. Having always shown stallions, we went to S.E.W.P.C.A
show with Cracklin-Rose and a foal by Trevallion Valentino at foot. Under judge Alan Lewis (Tyssil),
she won her class, the Section D Championship, and Supreme of show. We continued our show
season with wins and championships at Ardingly, then went one better at Northleach where she was
again Supreme of show. With only a couple weeks break, we were again off to show at the nationals,
where amongst a ring of champions she was to take the title of Champion Section D, the first of three
national titles over three different years. Cracklin-Rose, has been shown at Welsh Association and
county level, and has won at all of them.
She has had foals by Trevallion Black Harry, who was Male Champion and Reserve for the P.O.W.S
Cup in 2011, and also by twice RW winner Danaway Harry. This year she has a black filly—
Danaway Black-Rose—who is by Trevallion Black Harry, and she is also unbeaten in the show ring.
The 2012 RW was a dream come true for us in many ways. Under judge Steve Everitt (Tireve, and
chairman of council of the WPCS), Sam, our youngest son, came second with the extravagantmoving yearling filly Danaway Baby-Jane, (by Danaway Tango); In the barren mares, Danaway
Rosa (by Danaway Tango and full sister to Cracklin-Rose), owned by our cousins in Essex, won her
class; In the junior stallions, Drogeda the Outlaw (owned by our nephews Joe & Tony Lee and by
Danaway Tango) won; Then came the senior brood mare class: after long months of hard work by
our eldest son Matty, Cracklin-Rose was to win her class of strong competitors, then to be Female
Champion, and then to go on and challenge for the Section D and P.O.W.S Cup (every cob
breeder’s dream), against the Male Champion—Gwenllan Brynmor—himself a great stallion. In the
final lineup it was to be Cracklin-Rose pulled forward to win the P.O.W.S with Gwenllan Brynymor
in reserve. Not over yet and still on an emotional high, the next day we were to win the Tom and
Sprightly, which is the championship for all the Welsh Sections: A, B, C, and D. During the show it
was announced that our stallion Danaway Tango had also won the sire ratings competition, based on
his winning stock at the show.
Only two days ago, we were at Malvern and the National Championships, where Cracklin-Rose won
the national title for the third time. This is the first time a Cob has ever won the national title three
times.
It is with great pride that Cracklin-Rose has touched three generations in our family, namely in
myself, my late father, and our sons, who continue on at Danaway.
It is a truly fantastic end to an emotional and fantastic year. This mare has a temperament to die for,
is a pleasure to own, and what my late father saw in Cracklin-Rose at only hours old, she has truly
turned out to be.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome
By Dr. Amy Jordan
Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a clinical syndrome characterized by obesity, insulin resistance, and
laminitis in horses and ponies. Any breed of horse or pony can be affected, but EMS is commonly seen in many
pony breeds including: Welsh Ponies, Morgans, Quarter Horses, Arabians, and Warmbloods.
Obesity is commonly the first indication that a horse may be suffering from EMS. Obesity is most often a result
of chronic over-feeding and too little exercise; their owners often describe these horses as “easy keepers”. Horses
affected often have large “cresty” necks, regional fat deposits around the body, and some have swellings around
the udder or prepuce.
The second aspect of EMS is insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to
elevations in blood sugar levels. Its role is to move the sugar from the blood into muscle and fat cells. The
development of insulin resistance is due to several factors such as genetics, environmental and hormonal causes,
but the biggest factor involving EMS and insulin resistance is obesity. Fat cells release hormones that impair
insulin’s function in the body. When insulin resistance develops, the sugar in the blood remains high and
therefore high blood sugar levels signal to the pancreas to release more insulin. This eventually results in
hyperinsulinemia, or very high levels of insulin in the blood. Hyperinsulinemia has been shown to result in the
development of laminitis in horses because high levels of insulin affect the blood supply to the lamina of the hoof.
Consequently, the third aspect of EMS is laminitis. Laminitis cases associated with EMS tend to be mild and
often go unnoticed by the owner. Dropped soles, separation of the white line, as well as abnormal hoof wall
growth, characterize cases of chronic laminitis. However, radiology is the best way to diagnose laminitis and
measure the severity of individual cases.
After considering the individual aspects of EMS, one can appreciate how this syndrome can become a vicious
cycle. The obesity leads to the insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, which results in the development of
laminitis. Once a horse has laminitis it is more difficult to exercise and keep the horse fit, so the obesity problem
gets worse and hence there is ongoing insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, which further leads to ongoing
problems with laminitis… and so on, and so on.
EMS can be diagnosed by a veterinarian in several ways. Sometimes, the horse or pony’s history and clinical signs
are enough for the vet to make a diagnosis. Often, radiographs can be used in addition to the clinical signs to
confirm that the horse or pony is suffering from laminitis as well. Furthermore, there are several blood tests used
to measure the horse’s blood glucose and insulin levels to help with the diagnosis of EMS.
So, how do we manage EMS? Yes… one can ONLY manage EMS. There is no cure for this condition. The
main goal in the management of EMS is WEIGHT LOSS. Weight loss will result in an increase in insulin
sensitivity, which will lower the blood sugar levels, lower insulin levels in the blood and therefore reduce the
chance a horse will succumb to laminitis. Weight loss is most often achieved by diet, exercise, and sometimes,
medical management. Medical management is only ever short term, as a supplement to diet and exercise.
A horse or pony diagnosed with EMS should have a diet that consists of hay and a mineral or vitamin supplement
only. No grain, sweet feed, or pelleted feed should be given to horses or ponies with EMS. Grazing should be
reduced or restricted completely for these horses or ponies. Initially, the horse or pony should receive 1.5% of
hay/day based on the ideal body weight of the affected horse or pony. This can be reduced to 1% if no weight
loss is seen in the first month.
It is important to ensure that the horse or pony is sound before considering any exercise program. Initially, 2-3
sessions of 20-30mins of riding/lunging should be done every week. As the horse or pony gets fit, a gradual
increase in intensity and duration can be made, working up to five exercise sessions/week.
In summary, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a syndrome recognized in horses and ponies consisting of
obesity, insulin resistance, and laminitis. There is no cure for this condition, but is best managed by weight loss
through dieting and exercise. If you are concerned that your horse or pony may have EMS, contact your local
veterinarian for further information.

ELSH in
COMBINED DRIVING
By Denise MacDonald
D
o you need something else to do with your Welsh? I'll let you in on a little secret:
combined driving.
I purchased a yearling Section A gelding for my daughter to eventually ride, as she was only one year
old at the time. When I began the search for a trusty steed, I looked at so many backyard-bred,
foundered, spoiled—well to be honest, garbage ponies. When I came upon Stonecountry Farms and
the Welsh breed I was done. Though I was looking for a black and white 13 to 14hh filly, I came
home with an 11.2hh grey gelding by the name of Stonecountry Aladdin—or “Pepper”. However, he
was well portioned, had been handled, and was the result of some planned breeding program. He
was too small for me to ride, so I broke him to drive.
As a child, I grew up on the farm in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, and I always drove my ponies.
Eventually I competed in open shows with my Arabian mare in classes including Western, English,
and Pleasure Driving. I knew I could get a good handle on Pepper if I trained him to drive, and then
my daughter could just ride him. He was fun to drive, so we drove in the winter and we drove in the
summer. See for winter, I take my
axle off and put another axle with
runners on.
In the past, I had both attended
an introduction to a combined
driving clinic, and I had seen a
video of indoor combined driving
at the Toronto Royal Winter
Fair. People were competing with
four-horse-hitches over bridges
and through gates and obstacles,
sometimes at a full gallop. One
team had galloped over a bridge
then stopped and needed to do a
U-turn around a post. The lead
team turned right and moved
around, almost facing the driver,
while the wheel team stayed

steady. Then they all took off, spinning that cart around the post. The control they had was
phenomenal, not to mention the speed. I remember thinking, “Wow, that is what I want to do”.
When Pepper was driving well, I thought, “Here is my opportunity to give it a whirl”. I made contact
with the local club—East West Chapter of the Alberta Carriage Driving Association—and started to
attend clinics and events. I received a lot of tips on how to improve my harness’s fit and a lot of help
reinforcing my cheap little cart. You see, I never held anything back, and that little cart just wasn’t
built to fly around obstacles. I have practically rebuilt my cart, plus now am a proud owner of a
"Zilco" synthetic harness. It proves you can start small and progress.
The pony Pepper was a good fit for combined driving. He has the ability to turn on a dime yet is very
cool and calm about everything from galloping over bridges, through water, down hills, and through
trees. He never balks, and he can go fast. If I keep us on course, we generally place on top because he
can take the short route; the big horses have a longer stride, so they have to take the long route.
Pepper is 11.2hh and has only one eye, but he is all
heart. People do not expect how fast that quiet
little pony can go until they see him in action. If I
have a new groom I tell her to hang on. She thinks
I am just being funny, but after we go through the
first obstacle she realizes it’s no joke. I have been
called a “crazy lady”, but now people follow me on
the obstacles to watch that pony go.
Though carriage driving has been used for
transportation for many years, the modern
combined driving—also known as horse driving trials—came into existence in 1968 when Prince
Phillip began to establish rules for the new sport. Combined driving is modeled after eventing, the
ridden three-day event, so the sports share many similarities. Combined driving has three phases:
dressage, cross-country marathon, and obstacle cone driving.
A modified version of the traditional three-day CDE (combined driving event) is a one-day driving
trial where you do all three phases in one day; therefore, it has less distance. However, on a true
three-day CDE, the first day you have a vet check, presentation, and drive a dressage pattern. The
driven dressage portion tests the obedience, freedom and regularity of the team as they complete a
pre-set pattern. They are judged on safety of the harness and rig, as well as the overall appearance of
the team.
The second day you complete the marathon phase. The marathon is a You can start small
timed, cross-country course of approximately six kilometers, incorporating and progress.
five natural or man-made obstacles that must be driven in correct sequence.
Penalties are assigned for too much or too little speed. The marathon is exciting to watch, as it is the
ultimate test of fitness and stamina of the horse, driver, groom, and equipment. The marathon is
comprised of three sections. The first section of the marathon covers distance, which drivers
generally have their ponies take at a good trot meant to increase their ponies’ heart rate. The second
section of the marathon is a mandatory walk, followed by a vet check. In that check, their heart rate
must be good before going into the next portion where you are timed in the obstacle; each second
you are in the vet check is considered a penalty point. Therefore, the quicker the heart rate goes
down, the better.
The third test is that of the cones, which equates to the show jumping phase of the ridden event. This
course consists of 16 to 20 pairs of traffic cones, which the driver must navigate his or her pony
30
around with only centimeters to spare on either side of the wheel. Penalties occur for knocking over
the cones or dislodging the balls. Cone driving requires a steady hand, nerves of steel, and a welltrained horse! It tests the driver's competence and the suppleness and obedience of the pony.
Each level has a number of gates within the obstacle. For instance, preliminary may have five gates:
gates A, B, C, D, and E. Each gate has a red letter and a white letter, and you can only go through
the gates in order. You must remember to always keep the red letter on your right. In text, that seems
complicated, but in reality, it is a good challenge. Grooms sit on the cart with you and help you
navigate through the obstacle. The goal is to get through the obstacle as quick as you can, in the right
order, and with the red letter on your right.
Welsh are a good fit for this sport because they are so compact they can get through tight spots no
one else would even consider, and their even temperament makes them an ease to maneuver and
pleasure to drive, and well—they are so gosh darn cute.
Being competitive at heart this was the perfect sport for me, and as I progressed I began to realize I
was a bit of an adrenaline junkie with the need for speed—controlled speed, of course. It is great pleasure
for me to gallop into an obstacle course, do a 360 around a post, fly through two popular trees just
wide enough for my cart to fit, circle around to go through the remaining gates, and gallop out of the
course. Yet I know that if I say “whoa” that pony will plant all fours and wait for further direction.
I love the sport. I have been competing now for five years, and this year I’m preparing to try
intermediate for the first time. This will increase my speed requirement from 11 kmph to 12 kmph.
But my long-term goal is to drive pairs. Pairs really allows you to compete against yourself and work
on bettering your last score. It has built into it different levels (training, preliminary, intermediate,
and advanced) that allow you to compete against others within the same level but also allow you to
establish goals for attaining the next level.
My daughter is riding Pepper full time now and eventually she will take over the driving reins at
combined driving events, but for now, I can’t wait until the next event!
I know there are other Welsh Ponies out there that would excel at combined driving, and I guarantee
it is fun! Contact the Alberta Carriage Driving Association for a club near you. www.albertadrivingacda.ca

Stars of the West Sportpony
Challenge—NASPR Inspections
A new show series designed to promote educated breeding and to improve the quality in
today’s and tomorrow’s sportponies
Dallas Grubenmann
S
tars of the West is an in-hand show series started in 2011 and
continuing annually. It is designed to encourage sportpony breeders
and owners in western Canada to show and evaluate their ponies. This is a sister series to the
Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup, which takes place in eastern Canada and the United
States. That series culminates in the Final Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup; the current purse is
$2500 at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
Sportponies attend shows that host qualifying classes throughout the season (for the 2012 schedule
and results visit www.northamericansportponies.com). Sportponies placing first in any of the four age
divisions qualify to move on to the final where the age division Champions and the Grand Champion
are awarded, and gain publicity through press releases sent to several equine publications including
Gaitpost, Canadian Horse, and horse sport magazines, as well as many local publications.
Our Stars of the West Challenge Cup here in Alberta is going strong and is consistently gaining in
popularity. We have also received inquiries from the United States to participate. There are shows in
Red Deer, Didsbury, Edmonton, and Bluffton where the first place ponies in each age division
qualify to go on to the final. This year’s final is being held at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping. In the
near future, we would like to expand our qualifying classes to Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
There is also the possibility that we will introduce under saddle classes, which would include dressage
suitability and hunter suitability.
Sportponies are not required to be inspected and
registered with the NASPR (NorthAmerican
Sportpony Registry); however, the prize money in
the final goes only to sportponies registered and
inspected with NASPR, and their owners must be
members in good standing. NASPR sponsors a
$500 prize, which, if not claimed, increases
yearly. The NASPR sportpony, Alvesta Brianna,
owned by Karen and Dean Chorney, was the
Grand Champion in 2011. They won the $500
NASPR Grand Prize plus the PTF Challenge Cup.
The NorthAmerican Sportpony is a type, not a 2011 NASPR Stars of the West Cup winner: ALVESTA BRIANNA,
particular breed of pony (with the exception of photographed here with owners, Karen and Dean Chorney.
Draft blood being excluded). Therefore,
sportponies are made up of anything from Welsh to New Forest to Arabians to Thoroughbreds.
Ponies participating must be 14.2hh and under and be of a sport type suitable for the Olympic
disciplines, the hunter ring, and driving. During inspection, foals and young stock are assessed
through a four-stage process: 1) review of conformation; 2) walk in-hand; 3) trot and canter at liberty;
4) final critique. Older ponies also undertake free jumping.
There are inspections held in Alberta once per year, hosted by Pferde Traum Farm. Breeders and
owners are encouraged to have their stock evaluated for conformation, movement, and jumping
32
ability. Sportponies achieving a 1st premium score or
above are eligible to be branded as NorthAmerican
Sportponies. To be eligible for evaluation and
inspection, the ponies have to be registered first with the
NASPR. NASPR judges are experienced in teaching as
well as judging and are from North America and Europe.
Inspections are widely used in Europe as a tool for
breeders and owners to raise the quality of their
sportponies with every generation. Having your
sportpony evaluated can help you develop an eye for
quality. This purposeful and educational system will also
assist you in choosing a mate for your sportpony. To
register and evaluate your sportpony, contact the NASPR
(contact information below). Registration forms and fees
are available on the website.

K
aren Chorney researched extensively before
purchasing ALVESTA BRIANNA. One
website she came across was for Alvesta Farm out
of Jarvie, Alberta. Karen was particularly struck
with the mare Alvesta Buttons N Bows
(Llandefalle Bonheddwr x Alvesta Misty Rose by
GlanNant Adonis). This mare appealed to Karen
in look and disposition enough that she enquired
of the breeder, Brenda Podolski, about a filly
from Buttons. That year of 2010, the 20-year-old
mare had her final foal—a bay filly sired by
*CadlanValley Pirate by the name of Alvesta
Brianna.
The next spring, the vet arrived at Alvesta Farm
to perform a thorough examination of the filly—
as per the Chorney’s request. As they and the
Podolski’s watched, Brianna was walked and
trotted, then stood up while the vet inspected her
legs, teeth, and heart. Karen Chorney later
remarked she couldn’t imagine a warmblood
weanling standing so patiently as the vet stretched
its legs backwards and forwards. Happy with
Brianna’s disposition and with the vet’s report,
the Chorney’s took the filly home to Exeter
Farm.
In 2011 as a yearling, Brianna had her showring
debute. Prior to her win at the finals that year,
the Chorney’s presented “Bree” at the North
American Sportpony Registration Inspection
held in Winfield, Alberta. After scrutinizing
Bree’s conformation and movement, inspector
Sonja Lowenfish awarded Brianna Site
Champion and a grading of First Premium
Premier. Only the top two percent of ponies
achieve this rating, and Bree was the first pony in
Alberta to receive it.
Later that year the Chorney’s took home $500
prize money when they took Brianna to the Sport
Pony Finals, where she first won her foal/yearling
class, then Grand Champion of show and the
inaugural NASPR Stars of the West Challenge
Cup.
Karen’s plans for Bree’s future are to start her
under saddle at four, then do a year of dressage
with her before moving Bree on to hunters and
jumpers. After Bree has had a performance
career, she will start a new career: that of a
broodmare. Karen looks forward to starting a
small breeding program focused on producing
quality hunter/jumper ponies, of which Bree will
be the foundation.

Wendy Stephens and the incredible
FLYING'DIAMOND'THE'BAILEF'
By Janice Early, Lazy J Welsh Pony Ranch, Linden, Texas
W
endy Stephens and Flying Diamond The Bailef LOM/AOE/LOM/AOD have been
WPCSA National Champions in Adult AB Hunters and Stock Seat Equitation and WPCSA
ReserveRNational Champions in Western Pleasure, Adult Trail, and Ridden Trail. The Bailef is
two-time Reserve National Champion in Junior Trail with numerous riders. However, it is the
successes and numerous television appearances in the Extreme Cowboy Races, Project Cowboy,
and America’s Favorite Trail Horse—where they finished third out of over 1000 entries—that have
made the team famous with an international following.
Wendy and The Bailef have been two-time Reserve
National Champions of the Extreme Cowboy Races, and
their successes in the competition is what led to their two
invitations to compete in the Invitation Only Cowboy Up
Challenge of the Calgary Stampede. The first invitation
was for 2011, but the dates conflicted with a pony show that
Bailef’s owner, Janice Early of the Lazy J Welsh Pony
Ranch of Linden, TX and Wendy organize. When the
2012 invitation was made, the show dates were changed, as
Wendy and Janice felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity. The commitment was sealed when the Welsh
Pony and Cob Society of America invited the team to
present at the February 2012 Annual General Meeting.
The attendees gave their support and passed the hat to help
make the trip possible. Fundraising was done and many
people played important roles in getting Wendy and Bailef
to the Stampede.
Wendy grew up in Washington state where she and her
mother dreamed of attending and competing at the Calgary
Stampede. Wendy lost her mother in November, 2011. She
knows her mother played an important part in the grand
adventure to achieve a lifetime goal. However, Wendy
never dreamed she would be competing in Calgary on a
Section B Welsh pony stallion against all stock horse types.
People always ask, “Why would someone bring a pony to
compete in events like this?” At first they snicker and won’t
talk to the lady on the pony. Always after the first go round,
34
Wendy and Bailef have made believers and become a force to be reckoned with. Cowboys express
concern that the pony won’t be able to side pass over barrels, drag heavy objects, or make high
jumps. They are amazed to see Wendy accomplish everything the big horses do and usually better.
The team always takes the highest jumps and puts pressure on the others to jump higher. They
swim through the deepest spots and never quit, no matter what challenge is put before them. When
they were competing in the 10 rounds of the AQHA sponsored Project Cowboy, Wendy and Bailef
had the highest cattle working score of any of the competitors. They finished sixth overall, and
Wendy was the highest placing woman! It seems at every competition, Bailef and Wendy quickly
become the crowd favorites.
The trip to Calgary was a grand adventure. Pat
Kultgen volunteered her truck and trailer and came
along for the experience. Stacy Westbrook (champion
groom) and her 12-year-old daughter, Dannah (warmup rider extraordinaire) completed the traveling crew.
At each stop, Dannah would hop on Bailef with his
halter and exercise him. At each state line they would
unload Mr. B and have a picture taken with each state
sign and text it back to the Lazy J. The Calgary
Stampede was an unforgettable experience; the
Canadian people were friendly and helpful, and the
Cowboy Up Challenge course is the best in the world.
Bailef did a stint in the Canadian Welsh Pony booth
and made lots of friends. Wendy and Bailef had a
great time with the Canadian Mounties and got to
stand amidst their drills.
The Canadian television stations featured Wendy and
Bailef on more than one segment. The goal of Team
Bailef was to do well enough on the first two days of
competition to make it to the final round giving the
world a third opportunity to see a Welsh pony going
up against the “big guys”. The challenge is the best of
the best, and Wendy and Bailef were very pleased to
accomplish their goal and finish in the top 10.
EXCA World Finals 2011—photo credit: Merrick Studios
Bailef has many offspring who are winning WPCSA National and Reserve National Championships
as well as competing at the World Finals of the Extreme Cowboy Races, qualifying for USEF Pony
Finals, finishing fifth overall at Pony Club Nationals, winning at halter, and giving pony rides. In
addition to the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the Calgary Stampede in 2012, Wendy and Bailef
are also going to the American Horsemen’s Challenge National competition in the English division
and won two WPCSA championships in English Pleasure showing Saddle Seat. Bailef has his own
Facebook page and would like more friends!

NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM THE SOCIETY OFFICE
Canadian Livestock Records Corporation – CLRC
NEW: TOLL FREE NUMBER: 1-877-833-7110
Office Hours for Mavis MacDonald – Welsh Registrar at CLRC:
Monday to Thursday
8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST/EDST
Phone: 613-731-7110 - Ext. 311
Laura Lee Mills is bilingual and assists with Welsh registrations. Laura Lee works

!
When registering a foal, please remember that the accepted colours are: Chestnut, Bay, Black, Grey,
Liver, Dun, Buckskin, Palomino, Crème, Perlino, Brown, Gruello and Roan in any of the above. Colour
terminologies could be: Liver Chestnut, Seal Brown, etc.
!
If you SELL a pony, you are required to process a TRANSFER to the new owner. Almost daily we
receive phone calls or e-mails about animals that have been purchased but the papers have been “lost”. Please
don’t let your pony be lost to the breed – complete a Transfer! The form may be found on the CLRC website
(www.clrc.ca) or you may request the form be mailed to you, at no charge, from CLRC.
!
When REGISTERING AN IMPORTED animal you will need to provide the ORIGINAL Registration
Certificate. If you do not wish the certificate to be folded into a letter-size envelope, you can request the
certificate(s) be returned to you in a 9”x12” flat envelope. There is an additional charge for this of $1.50. With a
possible increase in postage rates in the future, it might be wise to send $2.00 and your account will be credited
with any funds not used.
!
AS LONG AS YOU DON’T WRITE ON THE CERTIFICATE - there is NO CHARGE to have a
Registration Certificate for a Stallion to be changed to indicate he was Gelded. Send the original certificate to
CLRC, they will use a stamp to indicate the animal is now a Gelding and the database will be updated. The
original certificate will then be returned to you. This also applies if your pony/cob has died and you would like
to keep the papers. The database will be updated and the certificate will be returned to you.
!
If you have an animal that has had DNA done by UC Davis, please include a copy of that report when
sending material to CLRC. You do not have to have another DNA done in Canada. This will eliminate any delay in
processing the work and will also eliminate a “Reject Fee”.
!
A small supply of men’s dress ties has been found. They are classic Navy with the Society logo of the
white “running” pony placed at intervals. They may be purchased for the modest sum of $10.00 plus $2.00 for
postage. Please contact the office or a Director in your area to order.
!
A supply of Canadian Pony Society Stud Books – Vol. #2, #5 and #6 have been located. These books
contain early registration information on Welsh Ponies. Volume 2 was published in 1939, Volume 5 in 1959 and
Volume 6 in 1963. There are photo-copy pages of Volume 4 with only the Welsh registrations from 1955.
These books are available for $10. each plus postage. The photo copy pages will be at no charge.
News & information from the office – continued..

The information posted on the CLRC website is public domain. If you do not wish to have your
contact information shown, please advise either CLRC or the Society office and your information will be
suppressed on the website.
!
Buyer Beware! When purchasing a pony that is represented as being registered, please make sure to
see the original Registration Certificate! The name of the current owner should be indicated and all markings
and body colour should match the written description on the certificate. If you are told the animal is able to be

registered – check with CLRC or the Society Office to be sure that: 1) both parents are full registered Welsh; 2)
there was a Stallion Service Report filed, listing the name of the mare; 3) the owner of the dam is willing to
complete and sign the Application for Registration. In the case of a Half Welsh animal, one parent must be full,
registered Welsh but the other information is required as well.
!
NEW!! The Society now has its own Stallion Service Report! It is available on the CLRC website
(www.clrc.ca) under the Associations tab in the drop-down menu – then look in Printable Forms – way down at
the bottom of the list. Please make sure to list ALL mares bred to your stallion – full Registered or Half Welsh
or “other than Welsh”.
!
RETURNING IN 2013 – HIGH POIN T PROGRAM . A program is being written to tabulate
results. The Executive and Board of Directors are reviewing a submission for a program. The program will be
included in the Winter issue of Welsh in Canada.
!
COMING IN 2013 – An Amendment to the Constitution re DNA. It will be proposed that all
mares, 15 years and older will be DNA’d and all foals out of mares 15 years and older will be DNA’d. It is
anticipated there would be a cost reduction for DNA kits for breeders with multiple mares in this age group.
!
We are now on FACEBOOK – check us out! If you have any interesting facts or history of the Society
– please contact Karen Podolski so that she may update the page.

!
When completing Registration Applications, please be sure to print or write clearly. If you find an error
when you receive the Registration Certificate you should return the Certificate to CLRC for correction. If the
error was because there was difficulty in interpreting the printing or handwriting then you will be charged for the
correction. If the error was on the part of CLRC, there will be no charge.
