MANGROVES- OUR
PRICELESS TREASURE
Under the project “Mangroves-Our Priceless Treasure (contribution from Bank Islam CSR grant)
we are almost reaching our target to plant 2,200 mangrove trees at identified degraded area from
June 2014 till present. On 7 April, we had successfully set up at simple nursery site to store the mangrove seedlings. With the helps from intern and teamwork from KKW staffs we had replanted 300
seedlings last month and make it overall a total 1,678 mangrove trees had been planted at Sulaman
Lake Forest Reserve, Tuaran within the one year duration.

conservation of
wetlands in Sabah
and the variety of
plants, birds and
other kinds of
organisms found in
them.
 To raise public
awareness and
appreciation of
wetlands and
public involvement
in protecting
wetlands.
 To manage Kota Kinabalu
Wetlands (KKW)
as a model
wetlands centre for
the purpose of
conservation,
education,
recreation, tourism
and research.

Sentinel FLOCK
Sentinel Flock acts as the first line to monitor
and detect bird flu that could be brought in by
migratory birds. The purpose is also to ensure
the safety of visitors to KKW and the surrounding areas as immediate measures will be taken if
infection is detected. This monitoring method is
a collaborative effort between Veterinary Services and Animal Industry Department and Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society.

On 2nd April 2015, new batch of 25 fowls are
brought into KKW. Experts will monitor the
chickens regularly to examine if there is a sign of
viruses, especially H5N1 that causing the
“Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza” (HPAI).

ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTARY work
Once again, this month we are joyous in receiving volunteers to help us in keeping KKW in good condition.
We are so impressed by the spirit of volunteerism which is an additional help to KKW that has made our
conservation effort possible.

tireless and coordinated efforts, the
volunteers managed to help in repairing
the hut at nursery.

with fallen leaves, we are grateful to have
these volunteers in helping in clearing the
area.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME
April was a busy month of spreading the words of wetlands conservation to nurture awareness and appreciation for
the natural environment. Not only that we had conducted the Mangrove Experience Programme for that purpose,
but we also went to schools to reach out more!

Outreach Programme
Outreaching further to school is one of the environmental education programmes conducted by KKW. This month we reached to
SM Tshung Tsin in conjunction of the 9th Primary Schools Science Camp and to SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin for Hari Ekspo Lestari. With the aim of the outreach, to encourage students to recycle used papers and indirectly reduce paper waste, it is really impressing to see how creative the students are in turning the used papers into something useful. It is hoped that through this activities, the students are able bring back home new knowledge and implement it in their daily lives. In the preparation of the outreach, we are glad to received volunteers to help the KKW staffs in making papers to be exhibited at schools.

Engaging our ex-officio
SWCS paid a courtesy call to Director, Department of Irrigation & Drainage, Sabah, Ir. Ng Chee Hing with his subordinates on 08th April 2015,
9.00am. This visit is valuable to foster relationship of both sides as well as
to officially communicate the drainage system and the water quality issues.

Another effort of SWCS is to pay a courtesy call to the newly appointed Director, Sabah Wildlife Department, Mr. William Baya with his subordinate, Mr.
Peter Malim on 10th April 2015, 9.00am. This visit is to personally congratulate on his new appointment as well as to brief the history of SWCS to signify
the importance of this agency towards the sustainability of KKW. We had a
fruitful discussion and we are looking forward to our future collaboration.

On 23 April 2015, a special meeting was conducted with JKR, chaired by Ir.
Edward Lingkapo, Chief Assistant Director (Sewerage). This meeting is a
continuation after paper presentation by Conservation & Science Officer,
KKW, Ms. Guslia during the State Level World Water Day Conference and
Exhibition on 21 - 22 March 2015. Wherein, JKR offered to help SWCS in
Water Quality Monitoring because of the high rate of e-coli level, which can
cause imbalance and disturbance to the flora and fauna within KKW as well
as for the environmental education activities. We had a positive response
from the department and look forward for the future collaboration.

Our monthly programs were very helpful and shaped me to independently assist

The research I conducted for my mini project on the assessment of phytoplankton in
Kota Kinabalu Wetlands was quite interesting. I hope the report has
