Comprehensive Breast Centers where screenings, testing,
and diagnosis can be accomplished all in the same place are
under development by Health First, and proceeds from the
Foundation’s annual Benefit Ball will help fund the projects.
Two Breast Centers are in the plans—one in Melbourne to
be located within the Health First Medical Group’s Gateway
office and the other at Cape Canaveral Hospital.
Each Center will offer services that
include mammography, stereotactic
ultrasound breast biopsy, breast MRI,
breast ultrasound and Tomosynthesis
technology for 3-D breast imaging. A
team of expertly trained physicians and
staff will manage the centers, providing
expert care, patient support and
education as well.
Bright
Star:
Giving
hope & help to Grieving Children
A passion for putting smiles on the faces of children led
local business executive Marj Bartok to connect with Bright
Star, a program of Hospice of Health First. The program
provides supportive outreach and resources for children
grieving the loss of a family member or other loved one.
The Bright Star mission resonated with Marj, local owner
of Spherion Staffing, who was dealing with the personal
grief of losing her only child, an adult son Robert. Her love
of the program, coupled with a desire to honor her son,
motivated Marj to make a charitable gift to fund Camp
Bight Star, which integrates grief support into day-long
activities, games, entertainment and more. About 40
children and teens attended the November camp, held at
Gleason Park in Indian Harbour Beach.
Program director Cynthia Koppler, LCSW, said the camp
was “one of the best” since Hospice began offering
it 20 years ago. “Camp gives children the opportunity
to interact with other children who have had similar
experiences, and share their feelings with trained grief
support counselors,” said Ms. Koppler. “Children deal
with loss and grief in a unique way, and their path toward
healing is different than adults. Camp provides innovative,
supportive tools to help children heal. ”
Generous gifts
Theresa Williams
“This is exciting news for women of
Ball Chair
our community,” said Theresa Williams
of Indian Harbour Beach, a breast cancer survivor who has
volunteered to chair the 2014 Ball, set for April 12. At the
kick off reception in December, she told 30 members of
her Ball Committee, “Having a centralized, comprehensive
service area for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer
is important to help fight this horrible
disease. It will help cut down on the
anxiety and concerns women face when
they get an irregular mammogram.”
Camp facilitator Jenna Pochy
assists a young Bright Star camper
as other participants look on.
Meeting the camp’s children — ages 5 to 18 — was an
“inspiration” to Marj.
“My son, Robert, was so thoughtful of others his entire
life, and as a child at the holidays he would always be first
to ask and remind me about doing something for less
fortunate kids,” Marj said. “He was so fond of St. Jude’s,
but I wanted to connect with local children,“ she noted.
Theresa has lived in Brevard County
for over 30 years, and is active in many
civic and charitable groups. Currently,
she serves as a board member and
advocate for Breast Friends of Florida,
a local cancer support group, and holds Stephen Lacey
Ball Underwriting
a degree in nursing. “Breast Cancer
Chair
typically has no symptoms when the
tumor is small and treatable,” she noted. “This is why it is
so important for women to get regular mammograms.”
“When you see these beautiful children at Bright Star, they
look healthy and vital and don’t have any physical problems.
But their pain and hurt is hidden internally, and while I can’t
see it, I can feel and empathize with it. It’s nice to know that
in a small way I can help them and impact their young lives.”
Bright Star is funded by Hospice of Health First. There are few
service fees for children who come to the program for help,
and no insurance programs to share cost reimbursements.
Program operations look to charitable donations and gifts
from our community to sustain outreach.
Dr. Anil Dhople and Dr. Lee Scheinbart, board certified
oncologists with Health First Medical Group, are serving
as physician champions to the Benefit Ball Committee,
along with Dr. Aaron Hattaway, a radiologist with Brevard
Physician Associates.
The program maintains offices at 3661 Babcock Street
in Melbourne. For more information on the Bright Star
program, call 321-733-7672. For funding information,
call the Foundation at 321-434-7353. Speaking at the Ball Kick Off, Dr. Dhople noted that breast

improve lives & Health Care Services
The generosity of friends, community, associates and patients served by Health First provided more than
$2.3 million in philanthropic support this past fiscal year, which began October 1, 2012 and ended
September 30, 2013. Several thousand additional dollars were recorded from in-kind donations, including
volunteer participation in health care programs and services.
The positive impact of these gifts through the Health First Foundation represented more than 4,000 donors,
including individuals, local businesses and corporations, family foundations and organizations. A common
value they share is a passionate belief in our mission of healthcare excellence in Brevard County.
Whether you attended a fund-raising event, purchased a special drawing ticket or auction item,
remembered a loved-one with your gift, supported a named scholarship or simply made an
outright contribution for health care excellence, your annual support is highly valued and
serves as an inspiration to our clinicians, physicians, leadership, staff and volunteer Boards.

The Foundation’s annual scholarship program for Brevard
County high school graduates pursuing degrees in
healthcare studies has three new benefactors and named
scholarships this year. The $1,000 scholarships will be
awarded in May, along with others that are part of the
program. The new scholarships are:
Dr. Thomas L. Garell Memorial Scholarship: Made
possible by his wife Kay of Merritt Island and many friends.
Dr. Garell, who died in August, had strong community ties
to Brevard County. He was a member of the Health First
Cape Canaveral Hospital Medical Staff for many years, and
maintained a private practice in Internal Medicine. Mrs.
Garell hopes the recipient of her family’s scholarship has
aspirations of becoming a physician.
Shirley Ann Lopez Memorial Scholarship: Provided by
her husband Lou Lopez of Indialantic. Shirley was a devoted
teacher and touched thousands of young people’s lives
throughout her teaching career. Mr. Lopez honors his wife’s
memory by offering this scholarship to students who aspire
to make a difference in health care.
Bruce A. Mochwart Scholarship: Created specifically for
Junior ROTC cadets pursuing an education in the healthcare
field. Mr. Mochwart served in the armed forces and has an
affinity towards helping outstanding cadets from all military
branches achieve their academic and military goals. Mr. Mochwart,
a Melbourne resident, is a member of the Chairman’s Circle
of the Foundation’s Good Samaritan Club. Join

cancer is on the rise and growing at an annual rate of 7%. He discussed how women
wait up to six weeks from biopsy to surgery, and said the new Health First Breast Centers
will streamline this process to reduce the waiting time. He said the Breast Center will be
designed and staffed to:
■■ Increase continuity of care, efficiency, and ease for patients.
■■ Provide consistency and standardization across the breast care continuum.
■■ Decrease response time to results, questions, and concerns.
■■ Improve patient and referring physician satisfaction with breast
imaging and breast cancer diagnostic services.
■■ Provide personalized, supportive guidance and counseling through
the creation of a Nurse Navigator role.
■■ Create collaboration between all Health First facilities.
Behind the Scenes
at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center
Participants in our final Leaders Intern Program of 2013, held in late November, included,
from left, top row: Biba Watt, Leonard Zeiler, Pat Picornell. Bottom left: Stephanie Brown,
Aaron Stitzel, Judy Roach.
The day long program offered tours of the Heart Center at Holmes, surgical areas, trauma
and much more, and meetings with hospital administrators, physicians and other clinical
staff. The Foundation will offer programs again this year at each of the four Health
First hospitals to provide our donors and friends an opportunity to see and learn more
about health care at Health First. For information on participating in the tours, call the
Foundation at 321-434-7353. Supporting Theresa on the Ball Committee and serving as Underwriting
Chair is Stephen Lacey, an attorney with McClelland Jones, LLC, where
he concentrates in the areas of tax and estate planning, asset protection
and real estate and business law. Stephen has assembled a committee of
15 community leaders to advocate and promote sponsorships for the fund
raiser. This is his second year on the underwriting committee.
Sponsors will receive an invitation to a special Thank You Party to be held
March 20 at the beautiful riverside home of Bill and Lisa Troner. Bill serves
on the Foundation Board of Directors, and Lisa is on the Ball Committee.
Once again, the venue for this year’s Ball will be the Clemente Center at Florida
Institute of Technology in Melbourne. The black-tie affair will include an elegant
evening of food, drinks, live music, and dancing themed to the 1920’s best seller, “The
Great Gatsby.” It will be a night of glitz, glamour and fun, all to benefit women across
Brevard County.
