Market update
January 2006 has evidently shown that
'dynamic packaging' is expanding. The
controversial reversal of one of the CAA's
recommendations over ATOL Bonding in a
recent judicial review (ABTA VS CAA) has,
undoubtedly, contributed to this and,
consequently, also led the industry to
confusion. Currently there are varying
claims by suppliers that their dynamic
packaging bookings have increased by as
much as 200%, while it is certain that
bookings and demand for traditional IT
package tours are behind.
Mainstream tour operators and most of our
members however believe that there is still a
good market share for the traditional leisure
sector in the UK travel market-place
whatever the growth of 'dynamic packaging'
and the rapidly changing distribution
systems.
Industry sources and a recent consultation
with tour operator members revealed that
recent demand for summer 2006 for most
destinations has been slow. Currently the
overall outbound market was down by

around -12% and, once again, most people
believe that 2006 will be another challenging
year.
Mainly due to initiatives by a couple of
member companies there is a slightly
increased capacity to Cyprus this year.
Members believe that summer demand will
gradually pick up probably during February
and from March onwards. Market analysis
indicates that due to various reasons (e.g.
economy, fear of bird flu) consumers were
currently delaying their decisions to book
early.
It is therefore hoped - despite the worrying
indifferent early market start and global
competition - that the 2006 UK capacity to
Cyprus will be sold. If this happens UK
arrivals will again show a marginal increase,
year on year. A strong schedule sector
capacity and the increasing number of low
cost public fare offers will also help arrivals.
This however also aids the growth of
'dynamic packaging' and consequently
results in an increased lower end of the
market tourism flow and a likely decrease in
the Island's tourism revenue and hotels'
occupancies.
Cyprus's official stats (CYSTAT) showed the
2005 final total arrivals to the Island up
5.2% [2,470,063 / 2,349,012] with revenue
also up 2.4% [CY£1 1,005.7 / 982.3
million], year on year. UK arrivals were up
4.43% [1,391,842/1,332,846]: this, once
again, clearly demonstrating the strength of
the UK market sector.

titled 'Review of the UK ATOL bonding
system'. Mr. Simon Froome (Head of
ATOL Bonding) and Mr. David Moesli
(Deputy Director-Consumer Protection
Group) on behalf of the CAA will speak at
the event which is scheduled to be held on
Thursday, 9 March 2006 at the Cyprus
Brotherhood, Britannia Road, London N12,
(from 6+30 p.m.). Detailed invitations for
the event which will include dinner,
sponsored by new affiliate member
Citybond Suretravel, will be sent out
when plans have been finalised.

[Note: Background information: The Civil
Aviation Authority recently informed ATOL
holders that it had been asked by the
Government to review the present ATOL
bonding system by carrying out and
completing a consultation during 2006 with
a view of putting in place a revised and less
burdensome protection system which has
already been well publicised. It is
understood that the majority of ATOL
holders have welcomed the news and it was
generally believed that the existing bonding
system would be replaced sometime during
2007].

Membership Update

The Annabelle, an established 5 star deluxe

incoming travel agent in Limassol and
Citybond Suretravel, a well known UK
insurance broker, have joined AGTA (UK) as
new affiliate members from January 2006.

Membership lapses:
As announced previously, membership for one of AGTA’s founder members Amathus Holidays lapsed. The brand was sold to a non Cypriot
Group (Preston) and the council decided that it was un-constitutional for the company to remain as a bona-fide member (full story in the last
AGTA NEWS). Membership for affiliate member Numero also lapsed as the company decided that its products were no longer relevant for
networking with members.
