Aloha Sunsetters.
Please join me Monday in welcoming our newest Rotarian, Nicole Lemas. I am very excited that Nicole
chose to join our Club and am looking forward to working with her. Thank you Keola for bringing Nicole to our
most recent Sunset NetWorks meeting.
It has been a busy week for your Board as we
are in the process of submitting the package for club
awards. As you know, the annual awards are distributed at the District
Conference which will be held on May 2-4 at the Turtle Bay Resort. Please
check RotaryD5000.org for more information and to register.
This week’s speaker will be Sharon Gutierrez of Women in
Need. Women in need is a non profit serving Oahu and Kauai by providing
support services to people who have been through such challenges as domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse and substance abuse.
Lastly, we are looking for a host family for a couple from Australia
who will be visiting Hawaii on a Rotary Friendship Exchange from May 4
after the District Conference to May 8 when they return to Australia. If you
are interested, please contact me at [email protected]. The
Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the
opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world. In addition to
experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships, an exchange
provides a strong foundation for carrying out other international activities
and service projects.

Sharon Gutierrez
Women In Need
Sharon Gutierrez runs a 501(c)(3) organization, Women in Need (WIN) which helps individual who are facing difficult times of transition. WIN provides support services to people on Oahu and Kauai who have been
through such challenges as domestic violence, homelessness, and substance abuse.
Mission
WIN’s mission is to “empower families at risk by helping them develop the basic tools and skills of personal
development and self-sufficiency that enable them to live in safe and stable environments, and in healthy
relationships.” Our long-term goals are to open up statewide and move into transitional living and treatment
while providing the necessary services to enrich the lives of our people of Hawai`i, to end the cycle of domestic violence, substance abuse and homelessness.
WIN’s objective is to educate our clients on domestic violence in all of its forms. To provide a safety net and
network for which they can turn to for support and strength.
Our goals are that our clients will have healthy connections, learn to make positive choices and feel deserving of a healthy and loving relationship. What they become are productive members of their communities,
advocates for other domestic violence victims and develop a positive self image.
Sharon is a graduate from University of Alaska in Fairbanks and currently resides in Ewa Beach.
Meet Nicole Lemas
Our newest proposed member
Aloha Sunsetters, it is with great pleasure that I am presenting
Nicole Lemas as a proposed new member. Nicole has been to
our NetWorks meeting, spoke at our Green meeting on the 17th
and attended our Mardi Gras fundraiser on
Saturday.
Nicole comes from three generations of Rotarians, and grew up
with annual visits from Rotary Exchange students through her
Mother's club in Idaho. She has been involved with RYLA
for 10 years and was instrumental in developing the current
RYLA program for Rotary Club 5400 in Boise ID, her
hometown. Recently Nicole was affiliated with the Rotary Club
in Cuenca, Ecuador teaching English abroad.
Keola Lloyd is sponsoring Nicole for membership and I believe
she is going to make a wonderful addition to our club.
If there are no objections, we will induct Nicole into our Club on
Monday, March 31.
UPCOMING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
Respite Night at HUGS House - HUGS stand for
"Help Understanding Group Support"
Date: Friday, April 4, 2014 | Time: 6pm—8pm
Place: HUGS House | 3636 Kilauea Ave.
PURPOSE: To allow the parents of children critically ill with a long term illness the opportunity to have a
night out on their own while their children are being taken care of at HUGS House by their staff and our
members.
Looking for 5 Sunset Rotarians & 5 Rotaracts to volunteer to:
 Bring and lead a craft activity to last about 30-45 minutes to do with the children
 Serve dinner and eat with the children (25 children)
 (Honolulu Sunset Rotary will bring dessert for 60.)
 Honolulu Sunset will provide mugs filled with candy for the kids.
We will be stuffing them at our meeting March 31st.
Honolulu Sunset members are encouraged to take advantage of the after
Valentines Days candy sales and save them for this event.
