President’s Message
Happy summer everyone. I hope you are enjoying our great weather. We have had a most successful
spring starting with the Spring Fling in March. A great deal of work went into the event which was
enjoyed by a large group of ASG members. See the Education Committee article on page 7.
The May quarterly meeting, featuring Australian sewing instructor Nicole Mallalieu, was such fun. Her
gorgeous trunk show was followed by a fast-paced, technique-centered workshop. How wonderful to
find out those trade secrets to make our projects look so professional.
Our next special event will be Sunday, July 21 with Nancy Nix-Rice. Her presentation will be most helpful in helping you decide
what garments you absolutely "need" to make and the accessories to accent your lovely garments. Her presentation will also
be terrific for people who don't sew and for all of us who buy wonderful garments whenever we can find them. Please join
us and bring your friends for this lively, information-packed presentation.
The National ASG Conference in Alexandria, VA starts on July 31 for Chapter Presidents. The focus of this year's leadership
day is on the use of websites, social media and current technologies. While we have a great website, Yahoo! list and a
Facebook page, I hope to bring back more ideas that we can add.
September brings the talented local designer Ann Williamson to our chapter quarterly meeting. If you saw her on Oregon
Public Broadcasting’s Art Beat watch.opb.org/video/2364998017/, you know who we're talking about. Save September 28,
2013 to see Ann’s work close up and learn about her techniques. Learn more on page 8.
Please start thinking about the election which is coming up in December. We are required to elect three officers: President,
Secretary, and Treasurer, and there are other appointed offices to fill, as well. I know our guild members have skills and
experience which would be most helpful. I can assure you that this Chapter Advisory Board is hard-working and very welcoming
to new talent. If you would like to be involved, please contact anyone on the board and let them know of your interest.

Community Service
I will fill the Community Service position starting January
2014. I was very active in the ASG Alaska chapter CAB
for 20 years. The Alaska Chapter worked with Women's
Shelters and Homeless Centers. We made 50-60 hats,
scarves and mittens for at least three centers. Our Junior
Guild made drawstring bags that were filled with toiletries.
The camaraderie and spirit of giving was multiplied by the
knowledge that we were making a difference in somebody's
life.
I moved to Washington State following the death of my
husband, and my Sewing Friends have been a blessing. I
tell you this so you understand my delay in assuming the
duties. While I am resettling to the Vancouver area and
finding a home, I am eager to find joy in my life and I am sure
involvement with this chapter and service to the community
will provide an avenue.
Phyllis McIntosh
We received the following request through our website:
A month ago I sent out a request for sewing machines to assist our clients in working from home. First it went through our network
here at HUMAN SOLUTIONS, and then a colleague who belongs to the Quilters Club gave me their contact. Eileen Giskaas
heard about it through them, and contacted me and kindly donated a sewing machine and a hemmer. She suggested I contact
you to announce to your sewing community that if anyone has a sewing machine, quilting machine, hemmer, or sewing tool that
our clients could benefit from to sustain them economically, it would be so deeply appreciated. Please do not hesitate to call me.
Thank you,

CRS Logo Contest
Have you ever looked at our name, Columbia River Sewing, and imagined a design? We would like our members
to try their hand at designing a logo for our chapter. There are more items these days where a logo would be
perfect to quickly identify our chapter. What a great opportunity for a contest with the winner to be awarded with
dues paid for one year.
Timeline: Please submit all designs by August 10, 2013. All submissions will be included in our Sep/Oct newsletter
issue. Voting will be via the polling feature on our website and the winner will be announced at our December
Quarterly.
Design: The design should compliment the color scheme on our website. The design may include 2 or three
colors but must also appear clearly if printed in black/white. The minimum image size is 1050 pixels square and
300dpi, font style is open. If you have the design, but need help creating the image, we can help.

Retailer Spotlight
I have been exploring the area
to find the next destination for
you to visit. At the suggestion
of some of our members, I
ventured north to Vancouver
and discovered a little gem
of a shop called “Art and
Sewl.” Located in a quiet
neighborhood, it is owned by Shery MacCabe, who opened the
shop five years ago as an outlet for her love of textiles and creativity.
The small shop is set up nicely. Displayed quilts are lovely and show
all different kinds of styles and methods of quilting. She carries the
top lines of quilting cottons, patterns, books, embroidery supplies,
buttons, wool and various notions. And, of course, I found some
fabulous buttons and a real pretty cotton print to take home. There
is also a clearance rack—because I know how you like bargains.
The main focus of the shop is classes. There is a nice classroom
space for the maximum of 6 students, so you get great personal help
when taking a class. The comfortable room has a lot of natural light
with sewing tables, a cutting table and ironing boards set up ready for
students. She offers beginning sewing classes for kids and adults,
and beginning quilting classes for adults.
skirt. The classes are $50 and will be
offered again August 5-9.
There are open sew sessions on the first
Monday and third Wednesday of each
month from 12:30-7:30 for $10, with a
"sewing angel" available to help.
For some more fun, Art and Sewl offers a “Sewl party” the third
Saturday of the month at 11:30 am. Receive a free quilt block, bring
show and tell and and enjoy shop discounts. Shery would love to
have demonstrators show off a tip, trick or technique. She is also
open to having small groups meet at the shop. Give Shery a call if
you're interested.
Shery is giving our ASG group a generous discount of 15% (excludes
classes and clearance and cannot be combined with other specials).
Make sure to go and visit “Art and Sewl,”—take a class and buy some
treasures. Support our local and independent shops.
Ruthie Ruby
Shery has a passion for teaching kids to sew so the shop is offering
a special event for the kids: “Kids Can Sew Camp” will be held July
8-12. From 9am to 12 pm, kids between 9 and 12 years old will be
making PJ bottoms. From 1:30-3:30pm teens will be making a cute

May Quarterly Meeting with
Nicole Mallalieu
Purses, totes, bags, clutches,
messenger bags, shoulder
slouches, hats, and even a
child’s dress and skirt! These
were the treasures featured
in Australian designer Nicole
Mallalieu’s trunk show of her
patterns under the name, “You
Sew Girl!” Nicole talked about her
designing journey, which started
in the fashion design industry and
showed how that background has
influenced her patterns.
Nicole’s first love is teaching. This
shows in the detailed instructions that accompany her patterns.
She intentionally designs her patterns so they can be completed
by beginning sewers and varied by the more experienced. Her
specialty is purses and she brought samples for us to see—not
only spotlighting her patterns, but illustrating many variations to
individualize the bags.
In the afternoon, we worked on the construction of Nicole’s Day Bag.
We brought our interfaced fabric and we began the basic assembly
of our bags. Nicole gave us tips along the way,
providing individual help as needed.
She gave excellent demonstrations and tips on
various steps in bag making. She showed how
to make perfect shoulder straps with crisp square corners. One of
her mantras is “reduce bulk” and she showed lots of ways to do that
to achieve crisp folds and good corners. We learned variations on
adding a firm base—some attached to the outside of the bag while
others were concealed inside.
Some of the more entertaining conversations centered on the
different products available in the U.S. and Australia and highlighted
the differences in our versions of English.
Nicole’s last demonstration was zippers (“zips”) on the pocket and
on a gusset for the top of the bag. Using her method it is possible
to make a neat, clean finished closure for your bag.
At the outset, Nicole made it clear that we probably would not
complete the bag in the class. Most of us managed to complete
our handles and attach the base to our bag, but took home new
knowledge to successfully complete the bags at home to show off
at future ASG meetings.

Spring Fling Wrap-Up
Thanks so much to all those who were involved in making
this year’s Spring Fling a great success. From the feedback
we received, all four of our instructors did a fabulous job in
teaching their classes: Marnie Murray lead us through making
a Simple Knit Top. Marsha McClintock taught us her “VestS-Cape.” Debbie Utberg showed us Couture Techniques
for Pants. And Nick Egoroff helped us out with Machine
Maintenance on both regular sewing machines and sergers.
Attendees appreciated the variety of classes offered and the
expertise with which they were presented!
Thanks also to attendees who answered the survey. This
gave us some valuable insight as to what we can do to make
improvements for not only Spring Fling but all upcoming
events. We did want to clarify a couple of items that were
brought up in the surveys.
Cost is always a factor in planning these events to enable as
many people as possible to participate. Portland Community
College (PCC) allowed us to use the space free of charge this
year because we used their catering services; otherwise we
would have had to charge significantly more. While the building
remodeling during the event did cause some inconvenience
locating restrooms, it also eliminated the charge on the fourth
room, so we substituted a flex room in the cafeteria instead.
The biggest issue was the parking being so far away from the
actual building and while we can’t change the campus layout,
we do have plans to address the inconvenience.
with most leaning towards the positive;
it was clear that more preferred salads
to the sandwiches.
Planning has already begun for the next
Spring Fling so save the date: March
29, 2014. You will notice that this is the
second weekend of PCC’s Spring Break. We discovered that
we were inadvertently paying extra catering charges because
the catering department’s spring break went Wednesday
to Thursday rather than the normal Saturday to Sunday,
necessitating bringing in someone on overtime to take care
of our catering needs, so moving Spring Fling by a week will
eliminate this charge and help us keep the attendance costs
down. Considering the talents we are able to provide in this
manner, the value is enormous and is at a fraction of the cost
outside of ASG.
The Education and Special Events Committee appreciates
any and all input from our members. We endeavor to make
these programs appeal to as many of you as possible and only
by hearing from you can we achieve this. Please feel free to
contact us or any CAB member.

September Quarterly Meeting

Local designer Ann Williamson will present One Step at a Time.
Spend the morning learning about Ann's appliqué, piecing and beading techniques
and get a first hand look at some of her lovely and unique designs.
Then stay the afternoon for a hands-on workshop:
A Bit of This and a Bit of That
Look at Ann's process—from idea to sketch to finished garment. Along the way she
will show inspirations, drawings and techniques, focusing on her appliqué techniques,
bias strips and skinny tubes. She'll also discuss piecing and beading. And you'll have
time to create your own appliqué sample. Ann will answer all your questions about
her techniques. "I have no secrets!"
Registration will begin in August. Look for details in the next newsletter and our
website blog.
Ann Williamson designs oneof-a-kind clothing for the
creative individual.
Her background in art history introduced her to fabric as an
art medium. Today, she creates jackets, coats and separates
as expressions of this medium, emphasizing stunning design
and impeccable workmanship.
Ann's clothing incorporates a diversity of hand-sewing
techniques: beading, appliqué, piecing and embroidery. Her
garments exemplify her love of exquisite natural fabrics and
the palette of colors and textures they offer.

spirals of atomic particles.
Her finished designs look striking from a distance; up close,
their impeccable attention to detail distinguishes them.
“I measure the success of my clothing by how it looks and
feels on the woman who wears it. I want each piece to flatter
and enhance the body it adorns. Every coat, jacket or blouse
should make its wearer feel fabulous. I stay attuned to fashion
trends, yet I think of my work as 'outside' of fashion. My pieces
are classic shapes embellished with patterns and designs as
unique as the women who wear them.”
Ann collects vintage Japanese kimono silks, rich in subtle
weaves, fine-stenciled prints and artisan paintings. She
combines pieces from different bolts
and re-sews them into new designs

What's Out There
My friend and I were sewing small gift
bags together a few weeks ago. She was
borrowing my little Janome Gem that I use
for classes. It's completely manual, but I
had to show her a few things on it. She
said that she has a treadle machine as
her only sewing machine, so some of the features weren't
familiar, and she mentioned that she hasn't sewn much in
years. She actually makes her living knitting, that's how
good a knitter/designer she is. She does like sewing to relax
though, and really enjoys her treadle machine. She finds
it to be very meditative to treadle. In one way I completely
understand—I spin with a spinning wheel and treadling is
certainly very relaxing. However, when I'm sewing, I want
to GET SOMETHING DONE!! I'm the queen of flooring it. I
don't think I'd be able to use a treadle without a quadruple
shot espresso first.
Once she and I had talked about her treadle machine, I started
seeing them everywhere. Blog posts, photos—suddenly they're all
over the place. Peter Lappin (of the blog Male Pattern Boldness
malepatternboldness.blogspot.com) has admitted to treadlefascination and occasionally sews clothing on his. Of course, his
has lovely ornate painting on it.
After seeing Peter’s beauty, and drooling a bit over the online
pictures of old Singers, I remembered that I actually own a
treadle machine and it was out sitting in a corner of my studio
on the floor. My contractor (who built my sewing studio)
cleaned out his folks' large garage, and gave me bits and
pieces of several machines, including all the pieces (I think)
to a treadle machine—sans pretty paint and the cabinet, of
course. Though I'm sure he would build me a cabinet for a
slight fee. After a close examination—standing on my head
to look at it since it is too heavy to get off the floor singlehandedly—I found two metal plates. One says 31-15, and the
other says K152362. It is black, a little bit rusty, heavier than
the Titanic and does not appear to have any other markings.
But a quick Googling turned up some info. It's an old Singer
Industrial machine meant for canvas and leather. That serial
number was assembled in 1902. SewingManuals.net even
has an instruction manual, a parts booklet and an operator
manual. Though at $12 each—for about 20 photocopied
pages—does not seem like a good deal.
Here is what mine would look like if it still had it's Singer logo
and paintjob.
There have been a few sold on eBay, but I can’t imagine how
one would ship something so heavy and awkward.
It looks like I have options even if I don’t have all the pieces
or it is too rusted inside to save. I can always decorate with
it! There are some quite…creative… ideas for old sewing
machines. Lamps, yard art, etc. I hope all those were non-
working machines. I’d
hate to think someone
ruined an old treadle
just to make yard art.
Or I could collect a few
more and make a crazyimposing display. Check out this clothing shop in the UK. The
whole window is filled with old treadles.
There are many treadle-related websites, blogs and sewing
manual sites. To find out more about my machine, I went to
TreadleOn.net. Dick Wightman has a very interesting website
with a ton if information on fixing up old machines—what
type of belt, how to install it, cleaning and relubricating the
machine, tensioning—everything you'd need. If I want to make
my machine fit an orphan cabinet, there is a how-to. There is
even an article on modifying a modern walking foot to work
on a Singer Industrial so that it can be used for quilting. Who
knew?
So who out there has a treadle? Do you ever use it just for fun?
