Principal Profit’s Ponderings
Happy February,
It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the 3 rd quarter. We have a lot to celebrate in the month of February: Abe Lincoln birthday, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day, and
Ethnic Festival. Your children will have the joy of celebrating while learning about these different
events. As they continue to learn we encourage you to have your child read every night. I realize as a parent that task can be difficult, but we must remember that children who read more
achieve at higher levels in school. Research states that children who spend 30 minutes a day
reading books, magazines, and newspapers are more likely to become good readers and do
better in school.
Tips on Reading Aloud
Don’t read stories that you don’t enjoy yourself.
Don’t get too comfortable. If you lie down, you’re likely to get drowsy. If you slouch, your
voice will lose its energy.
Don’t be surprised if your child interrupts with a lot of questions. Answer those questions right away. “There is no time limit for reading a book,”
Don’t confuse quantity with quality. Your child will remember 10 minutes of reading far
longer than he will remember two hours of television.
Don’t try to compete with TV. Tell your child the TV will be turned off at a certain time
every evening-whether you have read-aloud time or not. Ask if he wants to hear you
read. If he doesn’t, that’s fine-but the television doesn’t come back on.
Happy Reading, Ms. Profit

has been recognized as an official Lincoln Legacy School, we plan to hold a special birthday party in honor of this great man. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m.
on February 12, 2009. All students are encouraged to wear Lincoln school shirts
or red, white, and blue.
One special activity that is planned is a Lincoln Look-alike Contest. Students interested in
entering should wear their costumes to school on the morning of the party. Prizes will be

PTA ETHNIC DINNER
Tuesday, February 17
6:00-7:00 p.m.
Lincoln School Gym
Your family will have an opportunity to share your culture through food.
We ask each family to bring a dish that represents your family’s heritage. Last
year there was a fantastic turnout for this activity. The food you brought came
from all over the world and it was delicious!! We’d love to have you come to
share with each other and learn about each other as we respect and accept all
people that make up our country, the United States of America.
Please enter through the gym doors on the east side of the building.
Beverages and table service are provided by the PTA!
First Grade News - Mrs. Dymond
We celebrated the 100th day of school this week
with counting, crowns, and a party after school. I
think everyone had fun.
It is amazing all the
learning that has taken
place in 100 days of school! The children have
all recently had testing in DIBELS and STAR.
We are very happy with our students’ results!
We hope we see more progress in the upcoming
days of school.
From the Library Media Center
We are pleased to announce that two new
items have been added to the North Platte Public Schools website. The
first is our electronic card
catalog system, called Destiny. The Destiny link is
located on the main page.
Destiny is used by our students and staff to locate all
of the books and materials in our libraries.
Parents, teachers and students will now be able
to access the information within our Destiny
system from home. Students will be able to
check the accelerated reading level for any
book in our system from home.
The second is our AR Book Finder website, an
online database listing over 114,000 accelerated reader quizzes available to our students.
Utilizing this website, parents and students
would be able to access quiz numbers for any
book even when the book is not in our collection. After reading a book, the student could
locate the quiz number, bring it to school and
take the test. AR Book Finder is accessed by
clicking the District Resources tab located on
the main page of the North Platte Public
Schools website.
If you have any questions, please contact your
Library Media Specialist, Ms. Marlin.
Pig Racing in the Gym
Our Fund Raising coordinator, Steve Hillers, provided a pig race for each class that sold at least 100
tubs of cookie dough. Those classes included Mrs.
Power, Mrs. Vermeer, Mrs. Dymond, Ms. Kubes,
Mrs. Aurich, Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Volcek. Students were taken to the gym where each class was
provided with a different colored mechanical pig.
The pigs then raced and the class with the winner
was provided with an ice cream party. Congratulations to Ms. Kubes’ class, they really enjoyed the
party!! Thank you to all students who sold cookie
dough, we are hoping to purchase new playground
equipment with the proceeds.
Counselor’s Corner
By Monica Kramer
On Thursday, January 8, 2009, Colby Jones, Alex Murphy, Mia Sandoval, Joseph Thiem, Taylor Pantenburg, RaShawn
Bryant, and Nikki Gonzalez represented Lincoln school at the Elementary Leadership Conference at Mid-Plains Community College. There were 134 students from 17 schools registered for this year’s conference. Lincoln’s leaders were
chosen from input from peers, teachers, counselor, and principal. Students were divided into 6 groups and had an opportunity to meet students from other schools who also demonstrate positive leadership qualities.
Students were able to attend six sessions with their group and learn about the following topics; Neil Hokanson , leadership podcast project; Denise DiGiovanni , Digital Citizenship; Margaret
Ziegler and Kara Dike,Standing up to
Peer Pressure: “How to Say NO Without Losing Your Friends”; Michael
Davis, Characteristics of Great Leaders; Deanna L. Peterson, SelfLeadership: Leading yourself to Excellence; Jenee Hill and Monica
Kramer, Leaders Don’t Tolerate Bullying.”
Students were treated to pizza and
pop for lunch and enjoyed participating in a dance activity with Becky
Wagner following lunch. In the afternoon students convened in the auditorium to listen to community leaders
lead a panel discussion. Members of
the panel included Mrs. Molly O’Holleran, Mr. Ernie Mehl, Dr. David
Engle, and Dr. Midge Mougey.
We can all be proud of the great leadership of our Lincoln students. Following are quotes from the participants:
Colby Jones: “I liked when they were giving away prizes. I also liked when we did stations.”
Alex Murphy: “ At the leadership convention it was really fun. We got to draw about people we admire and I wrote
about Mrs. Volcek. It was so fun! There was a thing all about pod casts. It was cool.”
Mia Sandoval: “One of the things that I really liked about it was that we ate pizza! I also liked the session that was
about leaders don’t tolerate bullying.”
Joseph Thiem: “Some things I liked on Leadership day was that we got to pick partners and sit by some friends. We
also got planet names. There were tons of planets. I got the planet name Saturn. I also like when we did the podcast.”
Taylor Pantenburg: “We got to pick a planet nickname. I got to sit next to my friends at lunch. And I liked the candy
and pens that we got. I also liked all the classes we went to.”
RaShawn Bryant: “I liked that we got to know different people. I also liked when the teachers talked about their own
experiences. I liked when we made a podcast. What I liked the most was all the classes.”
Nikki Gonzalez: “I liked that we made new friends. We danced and that was fun too.”
Preschool Adventures—Mrs. Chromy
The preschoolers learned lots of nursery rhymes this month. They matched mittens, when they
learned The Three Little Kittens. They estimated how many cups of water it
Computer friends
would take to fill Jack & Jill’s Pail, and discovered that it took 17 cups of
water to fill the pail. They had a lot of fun learning from nursery rhymes!
The preschoolers also enjoyed their new computers in their classroom, as well Josiah Collins displays his
as the new I Spy Game (finding items hidden in rice), reading new library
paper snowman
books with friends, and making snowmen out of paper snowballs. They are
also learned how to play Candy Land to help them learn their colors, and to practice taking turns with
their friends.

Hello! My name is Colleen Hodges and I am Mrs. Power’s student teacher. I began student teaching on January 5
and my last day will be February 27. I am enjoying my time with Mrs. Power and her kindergarten students. They
are a wonderful class and I am learning so much.
I am currently attending Chadron State College and will be graduating on May 9
of this year. I will graduate with an endorsement in Elementary Education (K-8)
and Early Childhood.
I have been a paraprofessional and a substitute and have enjoyed this immensely.
I am married to James Hodges and he works for UPRR. I have three children, Brooke who is in 6 th grade, Joshua
who is in Kindergarten, and Jonathan who is in Preschool.
I appreciate the welcoming that I have received from the staff and families here at Lincoln. Thank you for a wonderful learning experience!

LinkUp Update!
In addition to grants from the Nebraska Arts Council, Peter Kiewitt Foundation, Mid-America Arts Alliance, NebraskaLand National Bank, we have received a REACH grant from the North Platte Public
Schools Foundation. If you see any of the Board members, please thank them for their support! Fifth
grade students are busy learning how to read notes and rhythm and play their recorders all at once –
whew! Remember to mark your calendars now for March 3. At 1:45 P.M., the students will perform
recorder pieces and sing with the Omaha Symphony. At 7:00 P.M. that
same evening, there will another chance to perform for a limited number
of students at the Symphony concert for the North Platte Concert Association. Meanwhile, encourage your fifth graders to practice their recorder
fingerings at home, in the car, at the grocery store – whenever they can!
Stay “tuned” for more information!
