DeuroGuard – micro scratch resistance!
What is microscratch resistance?
Transport, cleaning, and daily wear and tear pose a great challenge
to melamine surfaces. Residual dust between stacked boards can
cause abrasive damage. Cleaning sponges and towels spoil kitchen
and furniture surfaces. Daily use reduces the vivid impressions of
modern laminate flooring. Glossy surfaces become mate, mate surfaces develop shiny spots, vivid colors become dull. The cause for
this visual loss are many micro scratches less than 5 µm deep. Such
scratches only penetrate the top resin layer and cannot be avoided
by standard methods such as abrasion resistant overlays.

How is it evaluated?
It is not possible to evaluate micro scratch resistance of melamine
surfaces with standard abrasion testers like Taber, Ericson, etc.
Rather a method was chosen that mimics regular scuff movements
with a standardized scotch bride like cleaning sponge (Martindale
test, EN 16094). Thereby the loss of gloss level and the visual
damage is evaluated.

Solutions
Micro scratch resistance of melamine surfaces is achieved through
a protective layer on top of the resin. This layer must be very hard
yet fully transparent.
The common solution is to use micro corundum particle in the range
of 20 µm. However, a surface layer formed from irregular corundum
particles may cause costly pre-mature press plate deterioration.
Deurowood has developed two new and innovative methods to
protect melamine surfaces against micro scratch damage that do
not adversely affect press platens.
DeuroGuard K-23
This patented dispersion of a highly homogeneous micro-corundum
powder makes it possible to achieve outstanding scuff resistance
at extremely low dosages of less than 1 g/m2. DeuroGuard K-23 is
ideally suited for low pressure lamination – décor and overlay. Due
to the high transparency it is the right product for dark designs. It
can be applied in one and two step processes and does not damage
vat or coating equipment. Due to the low dosage and the shape of
the particles the operating life of press plates is barely reduced.

DeuroGuard PL-S
This dispersion of proprietary disc-shaped Al2O3 mono crystals with
a thickness of 0.5 µm is applied together with the top resin layer.
The special shapes then create a very hard and fully transparent
protective layer that protect from micro-scratches but minimizes
plate wear considerably.
PL can be used with the regular equipment and applied with
standard gravure-roll application with minor modification. PL-S is
especially suited for high gloss HPL.

DeuroGuard NS
By applying a protective surface layer of fused nano – silica particles
Deurowood offers a revolutionary and patented method to protect
decorative surfaces without any risk of plate damage. The most
efficient results are achieved by spraying the aqueous suspension of
formulated nano silica onto the top resin layer before the final drying
stage. Thereby a fully closed and highly transparent surface film
can be realized that achieves excellent micro scratch resistance.
DeuroGuard NS can also be applied by coater and gravure roller.
Thereby the viscosity is adjusted to fit the process.
